On The Ecology And Distribution Of Echinococcus Spp. (Cestoda: Taeniidae) And Characteristics Of Their Development In The Intermediate Host, Robert L. Rausch Jan 1967

On The Ecology And Distribution Of Echinococcus Spp. (Cestoda: Taeniidae) And Characteristics Of Their Development In The Intermediate Host, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch, 1786) and E. multilocularis Leuckart, 1863 [syn. Alveococcus multilocularis (Leuckart, 1863) Abuladze, 1960] are distinguished by well defined biological and developmental characteristics. Obligatory predator-prey relationships of the hosts segregate the two species ecologically under natural conditions. The larval stage of E. granulosus develops slowly in long-lived ungulates, while that of E. multilocularis becomes infective within a few months in intermediate hosts (rodents) having a life expectancy of less than a year.

Existing parasite-host relationships of these cestodes had become established at least as early as late Pleistocene time, and two biologically distinct forms of E. granulosus can …

New Records Of The Pigmy Shrew Microsorex Hoyi (Baird) In Alaska, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The results of extensive trapping (ca. 7000 small mammals from the Alaskan mainland) indicate that the pigmy shrew, Microsorex hoyi (Baird), is a comparatively rare mammal in Alaska. From January, 1949, to the present, my co-workers and I have collected only seven specimens. These few animals considerably extend the known geographic range of M. hoyi in Alaska.

The Rights Of A Public Employee In Nebraska, William E. Marsh Dec 1966

The Rights Of A Public Employee In Nebraska, William E. Marsh

Nebraska Law Review

In Local 507, IBEW v. Hastings, the Nebraska Supreme Court has followed the majority rule in declaring that governmental employees do not have collective bargaining rights in the same sense that their counterparts in private enterprise have. The legislative aftermath of this decision became one of the most contested issues of the 1967 unicameral session. The specific rights governmental employees and employee organizations possess after the Hastings decision and the new legislation, as well as the generally expanding role of government in our society, compel a reexamination of the status of the governmental employee.

Bird Control Methods And Devices--Comments Of The National Pest Control Association, Philip J. Spear

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

It may be useful to review some of the considerations that go into recommendations concerning bird management. Later I will make some comments concerning specific methods and devices being used in or promoted for bird control work regardless of whether or not they are new. Members of the National Pest Control Association provide a variety of services, such as fumigation, termite control and general pest control which includes rodent control. There are eight such categories listed in our roster, but only one member in five provides every service listed. Bird control is a rather recent development and is the newest …

Histoplasmosis--Its Relationship To Birds, E. R. Price Ph.D. Sep 1966

Histoplasmosis--Its Relationship To Birds, E. R. Price Ph.D.

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Histoplasmosis is a disease affecting man and many other ani¬mals including the dog, cat, cow, horse, and several wild animals. It is caused by a pathogenic fungus known as Histoplasma capsulatum. This fungus lives and multiplies in the ground as a mold. It prefers the undisturbed litter in and around old chicken houses or in undis¬turbed droppings under bird roosts. It has been found in the soil of dog kennels, under porches of old houses, under trees and bushes frequented by birds in the daytime. It has also been found in isolated caves and hollow trees. It apparently is capable …

Chemosterilants, Possible Control Agents, Robert Mclean Sep 1966

Chemosterilants, Possible Control Agents, Robert Mclean

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

A chemosterilant may be defined as a chemical compound that reduces or destroys fertility of the treated animal. There are a variety of compounds which have an anti-fertility effect, and these com¬pounds may attack the reproductive process at any one of its many phases. Chemosterilants have a good potential as a means of population control of pest animals, because the population may be reduced with little reproductive compensation which normally follows a reduction caused by killing. The number of young produced would be reduced by preventing reproduction or by causing early mortality; therefore, there would be little compensatory increase in …

Good Practice In Bird Management, James W. Steckel

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

I'm going to deviate a little bit from what's been said. I'd like to read to you first of all a Good Practice Statement for Bird Management that was accepted by the National Pest Control Association in the past year, 1965. I think it's important for all the people here, realizing that some of you are suppliers, some of you are from regulatory agencies, some of you are in the bird management business, and others are in¬terested in this field in many other ways. It's important for us to realize, all of us, that this field is just in the …

Population Dynamics Of Pest Birds, Robert Mclean Sep 1966

Population Dynamics Of Pest Birds, Robert Mclean

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

We want to talk now about population principles; this is our main problem dealing with populations. We should discuss the general application of population principles and the management of bird populations. The reason we can discuss this is because many species follow established principles; population growth and later regulation of its size follow certain basic rules. Many pest species follow these principles, but not always to the letter. Populations of different species, as well as of a species, vary depending upon local conditions. Local environments dictate what population levels and the growth of populations will be. Minor variabilities still fit …

Side Effects Of Persistent Toxicants, George J. Wallace Sep 1966

Side Effects Of Persistent Toxicants, George J. Wallace

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

As you can see from the general tenor of the printed program for this seminar, I am in the unenviable position of trying to discourage you from certain types of chemical control; but my assigned topic "Side Effects of Persistent Toxicants," implies that mission. However, my remarks may be somewhat anticlimax at this time, because it is now generally conceded that we need to reevaluate certain chemicals in control work and to restrict or severely curtail use of those that per¬sist for long periods in the environment. So let me detail my reasons for a somewhat negative attitude toward the …

Of Noon Scholars And Old Schools, Paul A. Olson May 1966

Of Noon Scholars And Old Schools, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

My thesis is that our scholarship is the poorer for not being developed, half consciously, for a public civic reason and to serve a somewhat public civic end. The MLA's proper first concern may, as some of its memoranda have indicated, be with scholarship and its second with pedagogy; but I cannot believe this. The two cannot for a moment be separated. Could they for Socrates or Erasmus or Milton or Wittgenstein? Are not the logical structure of a discipline—the way it fits together for us—and its pedagogy, as Piaget and common sense tell us, one? And if we have …

Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul Apr 1966

Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

Comparison of five methods for calculating gas chromatographic peaks (disc integration, triangulation, peak height X width at half height, Rt X peak height, and peak height) shows no significant difference in the calculated results when aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, and dieldrin are injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with electron capture detector.

Problems are associated with the calculation of toxaphene, chlordane, DDT, and BHC. The author makes suggestions for calculating these four residues when present individually and in combinations with other pesticides. Use of the last four toxaphene peaks compares favorably with results obtained by using the entire toxaphene curve. …

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xliv. Revision Of Ogmogaster Jägerskiöld, 1891, With A Description Of O. Pentalineatus Sp. N. (Trematoda: Notocotylidae), Robert L. Rausch, Francis H. Fay

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Discrepant conclusions in the literature concerning the specific distinction of the two spe- cies assigned to the genus Ogmogaster Jägerskiöld, 1891, necessitated a reevaluation of the taxonomic characters used in separating these trematodes. Study of material from baleen whales from North Pacific waters and from baleen whales and lobodont pinnipeds from the southern hemisphere disclosed the existence of two species which can be distinguished by consistent differences in numbers of ventral ridges, ratio of length of cirrus sac to length of body, and by other morphological characters. Since the original description of O. plicatus (Creplin, 1829) does not permit certain …

Nebraska State and Local Taxes in Perspective (E. B. Schmidt)

Last month we showed how overwhelmingly important the property tax is in the financing of state and local governments in Nebraska. If we are to see Nebraska's state and local finances in perspective, we may compare our state with all states with respect to the percentage of state and local tax revenue obtained from the various tax sources. Of even greater value would be a comparison with our neighbor states. Such is the purpose of this investigation.

Nebraska County and City Population Estimates for 1965 (Edward L. Hauswald)

Nebraska's population is estimated to have been 1,498,733 at the end of 1965. This represents an increase of 0.9 percent for the year as compared with an increase of 0.4 in 1964. In the five years since 1960, the state's population rose by about 6 percent. (A Census Bureau estimate places Nebraska's mid-year 1965 population at 1,477,000 of 0.4 percent above that at mid-year 1964 and 4.7 percent above that of April, 1960). Our county estimates appear in Table I, page 4; their pattern of change is shown in …

1966 Beef Cattle Progress Report Of Research Activities, E. F. Frolik, H. H. Kramer

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Many beef cattle breeders in the United States and other countries are following the progress of the selection experiment at the Fort Robinson Beef Cattle Research Station, Crawford, Nebraska. Three lines of Hereford cattle from the same genetic foundation are under selection. Line 21 is selected for 200-day weight. Line 22 is selected for yearling weight. Line 23 is selected for an index combining yearling weight and a score for muscling and fat thickness.

Each line is operated as a closed herd so it will be possible to determine how much improvement in economic traits can be made by selecting …
