Federal Wildlife Importation Regulations: The Why And Wherefore, Joseph P. Linduska
Federal Wildlife Importation Regulations: The Why And Wherefore, Joseph P. Linduska
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
This is a hasty and in many ways superficial review of the motivations that started us in the business of importing new, strange, beautiful, and hopefully useful wildlife. It is a capsuled account of the high cost of ill-advised introductions and of near misses that were avoided thanks to a few individuals who viewed such transplants with skepticism and even alarm. And I have touched also on the highlights of the legislative base from which we now operate in efforts to safeguard agriculture and other values from ravages of exotic wildlife; wildlife that may succeed too well with us and …

Epizootic Ecology In The Training Program Of The Vector-Borne Disease Section, Harold E. Stark
Epizootic Ecology In The Training Program Of The Vector-Borne Disease Section, Harold E. Stark
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
To fulfill the primary objective of the Vector-Borne Disease Section of NCDC to reduce the incidence of vector-borne diseases - a series of courses on vertebrates and arthropods and their role as reservoirs, vectors, and disease-causing agents is presented. Literature is prepared and a museum is maintained. One of these courses, Epizootic Ecology, illustrates some of the aspects dealt with in these courses. Definitions and concepts are presented followed by a brief review of principles of epidemiology and ecology. Specific examples constitute the bulk of the course. One of these, tularemia, is especially useful for the purposes of this course …

Experimentation—An Articulation Of A New Myth, Leonard V. Kaplan
Experimentation—An Articulation Of A New Myth, Leonard V. Kaplan
Nebraska Law Review
With explicit recognition of the need for ethical codes addressing medical experimentation after the specter of Nuremberg, what problem does experimentation present to the individual and the community, and if problems do exist, why do they defy legal control? Before analyzing the ethical interaction of doctor and patient and experimenter and subject, we should first recognize that experimentation as a concept is descriptive of legal and social operations as well. Also, the law does not and cannot yield scientific answers; rather it balances, makes value judgments; the law is, in fact, experimenting when it intercedes encouraging or more often proscribing …

Multiple Sources of Assistance are Available to Exporters (Dorothy Switzer)
When Nebraska manufacturers seek to protect or expand their stake in the world market, they need both expert advise and experienced assistance in handling the multiple negotiations involved in doing business overseas. Although many exporters are finding it advantageous to employ trade specialists, they also continue to place considerable reliance on their home state financial institutions. both directly and through their connections at the point of export. Nebraska banks are able to expedite foreign financial transactions and to provide other essential services such as letters of introduction to foreign businessmen …

The Distribution of Personal Income in Nebraska (Edward L. Hauswald)
Personal Income received in the Nebraska economy rose from $3.8 billion in 1965 to 4.1 billion in 1966, for a 7.0 percent increase (see Table I and Figure 1). In the National economy the increase was 8.2 percent; in the Plains economy, 7.5 percent. The results: (1) The upward movement of PI in Nebraska in 1965 from 1964, which had been greater than that in the Nation but slightly under that in the Plains, was not sustained; hence, Nebraska's share of both the National and Plain's PI flow dropped after …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Oral feeding of stilbestrol or implanting with stilbestrol or Synovex has resulted in increased weight gain and efficiency of gain for cattle fed finishing rations.
Combining oral feeding or stilbestrol with implanting did not give increased performance above that obtained from oral stilbestrol alone in two tests. Implanting cattle fed oral stilbestrol at the start of the feeding program with either stilbestrol or Synovex gave a similar pattern of performance to that obtained from oral stilbestrol alone.
Divorce Without Fault: The Next Step, Charles W. Tenney Jr.
Divorce Without Fault: The Next Step, Charles W. Tenney Jr.
Nebraska Law Review
The unchallenged view of the family as a basic and vital institution in the fabric of Western society has generated a continuing interest in legal questions concerning it. More particularly, an abiding concern has been manifested over whether and under what conditions a dissolution of the family unit ought to be permitted. Historically, we have moved from a period during which such questions were of exclusive ecclesiastical concern to one in which the civil law and its courts have undertaken the tasks of determining such issues. Building upon the approach of its clerical predecessors, civil divorce law in Western countries …
A New Species Of Rhinoceros, Aphelops Kimballensis, From The Latest Pliocene Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner
A New Species Of Rhinoceros, Aphelops Kimballensis, From The Latest Pliocene Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
An uncrushed skull and associated skeletal elements of a very large rhinoceros are the basis for the description of a new species of Aphelops from Frontier County, Nebraska. The major differences are: the skull is much larger in most dimensions than other Aphelops; it has an extremely elevated occipital region in comparison to Aphelops mutilus; the narial notch is retracted to a point perpendicular to the center of molar one; and the teeth are more hypsodont than any other species of this genus. The sediments which yielded the skull and skeletal parts are considered to be Kimballian in …

The Brule-Gering (Oligocene-Miocene) Contact In The Wildcat Ridge Area Of Western Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Charles H. Falkenbach, Carl F. Vondra
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
The contact between the Brule Formation (Oligocene) and the Gering Formation (Miocene) can be readily distinguished in the Wildcat Ridge area, as elsewhere in western Nebraska. At the critical fossiliferous exposures at Castle Rock in Scotts Bluff County, the contact on the south face between the two formations is defined as 129 feet above the base of the "Upper Ash" bed, which corresponds to the upper portion of Darton's (1899, PI. C, Fig. D, following p. 754) "sandy phase" in the upper part of the Brule. Certain key beds in the Gering Formation can be traced laterally from a channel …

An Academic Lawyer Plays Armchair Analyst: Some Speculations On The Relevance Of Psychoanalysis To The Law, Leonard V. Kaplan
An Academic Lawyer Plays Armchair Analyst: Some Speculations On The Relevance Of Psychoanalysis To The Law, Leonard V. Kaplan
Nebraska Law Review
The purpose of this paper is to briefly analyze two levels of potential and actual interrelationship between psychoanalytic insights and legal working. The first is psychoanalysis as a total philosophy of man, descriptive of man and all his institutions including legal ones; the second is psychoanalysis as a tool for the law where legal institutions seek for value reasons to intervene in a particular situation where the psychology of an individual(s) is at issue. The latter use of psychological theorems and methods covers the legal spectrum from cases of "undue influence" in wills to questions of "mens rea" in criminal, …

Problems In Drafting And Administering Discretionary Trusts, Richard R. Endacott
Problems In Drafting And Administering Discretionary Trusts, Richard R. Endacott
Nebraska Law Review
A discretionary trust is one which gives the trustee the authority to exercise his own judgment in applying certain provisions contained in the trust instrument. Discretionary provisions are most prevalent in regard to the trustee's authority as to time, manner, amount, or circumstances of payment of income or principal to certain beneficiaries. The practical problems involved in drafting and administering such trusts too frequently are given insufficient consideration. Perhaps the most difficult problem connected with discretionary trusts is that of communicating the settlor's true intentions from settlor to draftsman to trustee. This article examines the meanings of the most common …

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs
The National Collegiate Honors Council conducted its second annual meeting at the Statler-Hilton Hotel, Washington, D.C., October 20-22, 1967. About 230 faculty members, administrators, and students attended this meeting. The proceedings of that meeting are contained in this volume. The meeting was basically devoted to three concerns: (1) the problem of liaison between secondary schools and college honors programs; (2) problems and developments in the offering of science courses for honors students; (3) the exchange of information about problems and new directions in the honors program of those participating in the meeting. For the most part, the papers in this …
Ticks In Relation To Human Diseases Caused By Rickettsia Species, Harry Hoogstraal
Ticks In Relation To Human Diseases Caused By Rickettsia Species, Harry Hoogstraal
United States Navy: Publications
Rickettsiae (185) are obligate intracellular parasites that multiply by binary fission in the cells of both vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. They are pleomorphic coccobacillary bodies with complex cell walls containing muramic acid, and internal structures composed of ribonucleic and deoxyri bonucleic acids. Rickettsiae show independent metabolic activity with amino acids and intermediate carbohydrates as substrates, and are very susceptible to tetracyclines as well as to other antibiotics. They may be considered as fastidious bacteria whose major unique character is their obligate intracellu lar life, although there is at least one exception to this. In appearance, they range from coccoid forms …

Phospholipids Of Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, J. M. Shively, A. A. Benson
Phospholipids Of Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, J. M. Shively, A. A. Benson
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Cells and spent growth media from sulfur- and thiosulfate-grown cultures of Thiobacillus thiooxidans were analyzed. The phosphatides were examined by thinlayer chromatography, and the products of their hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid and methanolic potassium hydroxide were separated by paper chromatography. The phospholipids in both cells and spent growth media were identified as phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl N-monomethylethanolamine, phosphatidyl glycerol, and diphosphatidyl glycerol. These comprised about 97% of the total lipid phosphorus. Lyso-phosphatidyl-N-monomethylethanolamine and lysophosphatidylglycerol accounted for the remaining 3%. The percentage of the total lipid phosphorus accounted for by each phospholipid depended on the age of the culture.

On The Ecology And Distribution Of Echinococcus Spp. (Cestoda: Taeniidae) And Characteristics Of Their Development In The Intermediate Host, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch, 1786) and E. multilocularis Leuckart, 1863 [syn. Alveococcus multilocularis (Leuckart, 1863) Abuladze, 1960] are distinguished by well defined biological and developmental characteristics. Obligatory predator-prey relationships of the hosts segregate the two species ecologically under natural conditions. The larval stage of E. granulosus develops slowly in long-lived ungulates, while that of E. multilocularis becomes infective within a few months in intermediate hosts (rodents) having a life expectancy of less than a year.
Existing parasite-host relationships of these cestodes had become established at least as early as late Pleistocene time, and two biologically distinct forms of E. granulosus can …
