Patient-Specific Lumped-Parameter Model For Quantifying Vessel-Specific Remodeling And Predicting Right Ventricular Function In Pulmonary Hypertension, Christopher G. Lechuga, Amirreza Kachabi, Mitchel J. Colebank, Claudia E. Korcarz, Farhan Raza
Faculty Publications
Purpose: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a heterogeneous disease with patient-specific variability and vessel-specific remodeling, which eventually lead to right ventricular (RV) failure. The gold standard for RV assessment—pressure–volume (PV) loop acquisition—is invasive and limited to specialized settings. This study aims to develop a patient-specific lumped-parameter model that quantifies vessel-specific remodeling and simulates RV PV loops across PH phenotypes using routine clinical data.
Methods: A lumped-parameter model was calibrated using right heart catheterization and echocardiography data. Model agreement was assessed by R2 values for pressure and flow goodness-of-fit, and model-derived hemodynamic metrics were comparedwith clinical values. A dimensionality reduction approach was …

Self-Efficacy Switch List, Yoshihiko Ariizumi
Self-Efficacy Switch List, Yoshihiko Ariizumi
Learning, Teaching, & Researching Optimization
The Self-Efficacy Switch List is a practical checklist for building real confidence by noticing small actions, not by demanding perfect results. Each week, you focus on just 2–3 switches—such as taking small steps, restarting after failure, using social support, caring for your body, and simplifying your environment—while reflecting on what felt easier or heavier. Over time, these small, repeatable practices turn effort into momentum, strengthen your belief that “I can do this,” and help you keep going even when progress feels slow.
Examining The Effects Of Acculturative Stress And Religiosity Within Muslim Immigrants, Aasma Nuzzi
Examining The Effects Of Acculturative Stress And Religiosity Within Muslim Immigrants, Aasma Nuzzi
ETD Collection
ABSTRACT There remains a substantial need for awareness about mental health and effective counselling within Muslim immigrant communities. Previous research has found higher levels of stress, depression, and anxiety amongst Muslim immigrants; however, limited research has focused on the manner in which acculturative stress and religiosity influence psychological well-being, particularly when also considering generational differences. Therefore, using a sample composed of 369 first and second-generation South Asian Muslim immigrants, the following study examined the effects of acculturative stress on depression and life satisfaction, as well the moderating influence of religiosity and generational differences. As hypothesized, acculturative stress was significantly negatively …

From The Ashes Of Silence: How Transgenerational Trauma And Adaptive Communication Styles Affect The Ability Of Grandchildren Of Holocaust Survivors To Cope With Antisemitism, Diana Ariel Harman
ETD Collection
The Holocaust was a shocking atrocity that killed six million Jews (Bauman, 2003). The literal translation of The Holocaust is: “from the ashes” (Stein, 2014). This definition describes the experience of a Holocaust survivor having to build themselves up from the ashes of destruction. Throughout the past 70 years, researchers have tried to answer the question of whether traumatic events can be passed down to those who have never experienced them (Kellerman, 2024). Although there have been many ways of defining this transmission of trauma from historical, collective, intergenerational, and transgenerational trauma, one approach is to examine the longterm effects …

Online civic engagement among young people may represent a form of positive youthdevelopment in digital spaces. However, its impacts on youth’s well-being remain unclear, partly due to a lack of validated measures that capture the unique features of the internetand incorporate youth voices. To address this gap, we developed and validated a scale ofmultidimensional online civic engagement for youth aged 15 to 25 years (MOCE-Y) using anexploratory sequential mixed-methods approach. Qualitative interviews with 12 youth sup-ported the multidimensional structure derived from literature, from which we developed aninitial 40-item scale. Exploratory (N ¼ 159) and confirmatory (N ¼ 244) factor analyses withtwo …

Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of psychological resilience for well-being. While several reviews have addressed resilience in specific populations or contexts, few have synthesized global literature across diverse populations. This review examines psychological resilience across diverse populations, focusing on measurement, associated factors, and future public health preparedness strategies. Method: Guided by the PRISMA, a thorough search of PsycINFO, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science was conducted in February 2024, including quantitative studies considering psychological resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic published in peer-reviewed English journals from 2020 to 2024, using search terms relevant to psychological resilience and COVID-19. …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Each year, approximately 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States—about one every 26 seconds (National Center for Education Statistics, 2023). This trend calls for a reexamination of how we understand and support students labeled “at-risk.” Traditional deficit-based models focus narrowly on challenges, often overlooking how students actively build resilience to navigate adversity. This study explores how successful high school graduates from rural Title I schools in the southern United States interpret the “at-risk” label and develop resilience. Guided by two research questions (1) How do these graduates interpret and make meaning of the “at-risk” label? …

Assessment Of Knowledge, Attitude And Behaviors Towards Invasive Meningococcal Disease And Its Vaccination Among Young Adults In Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study, Wesam Osama Mandoura, Anmar Abdullah Bijar, Anmar Aiman Rehbini, Ghali Ghalib Alhindi
Saudi Toxicology Journal
Background: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) remains a life-threatening infection associated with high mortality and long-term morbidity. Effective vaccines are available but meningococcal vaccination in Saudi Arabia is not mandatory outside specific high-risk groups. Public knowledge, attitudes and behaviors (KAB) toward IMD and its vaccination play a pivotal role in disease prevention and vaccine uptake. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 382 residents of Saudi Arabia between July and August 2024 using a validated, Arabictranslated questionnaire distributed via social media. The survey assessed socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge of IMD, attitudes toward vaccination, vaccination behaviors and sources of information. Knowledge scores were …

Intraoperative Anxiolytic Management During Cesarean Delivery, Mary Katherine Dowdy, Maria Ledbetter
Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing
Perioperative anxiety is common among parturients undergoing cesarean section with neuraxial anesthesia. This issue has led to alterations in hemodynamics, length of stay, opioid consumption, and postoperative pain scores. It has been demonstrated that the anxiolytic, sedative, and analgesic effects of intravenous (IV) dexmedetomidine, as opposed to midazolam, can benefit parturients who are anxious during cesarean deliveries.
A 22-year-old, gravida 2 para 1, presented for an elective repeat cesarean section. Her past medical history included gestational hypertension, GERD, and anxiety. The patient also reported that her previous cesarean section, which was performed under subarachnoid block (SAB), was uncomplicated. During SAB …

Barriers To Entry, Barriers To Exit: Exploring The Relationship Between Administrative Burdens And Work Disincentives In Public Benefits Programs, Stephen Roll, Guangli Zhang, Mathieu Despard
Center for Social Development Research
Through the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility project, the Center for Social Development has explored how the design of the U.S. public benefits system creates barriers to the economic stability and mobility of low-wage workers. The first of these barriers is the administrative burdens embedded in public benefits, which refers to the difficulties and stresses potential beneficiaries experience learning about a program, complying with program rules, or interacting with program staff. The second of these barriers is the work and savings disincentives many public benefits programs create through their eligibility rules, which can punish beneficiaries for earning or saving more …

Examining Patterns In Childcare Utilization For Low-Wage Workers And Their Access To Government And Employer-Based Childcare Supports, Amrita Kulkarni, Laura Brugger, Stephen Roll, Guangli Zhang, Mathieu Despard
Center for Social Development Research
For parents in the United States, childcare costs are one of the largest expenses in the budget. This brief examines the childcare arrangements low-wage workers adopt, their difficulties in accessing and affording childcare, and the extent to which they utilize childcare benefits offered by their employers or the government. To do so, we use on data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility (WEIM) survey of a nationally representative sample of low-wage U.S. workers. For these analyses, the sample includes only workers with children under the age of 6.

Staff Education To Enhance Psychiatric Medication Adherence In Psychiatric Care, Emmanuel Nusta
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Medication non-adherence affects 49% of psychiatric patients and contributes to poor outcomes and increased hospitalizations. At the project site, 40% of patients demonstrated suboptimal adherence and 12 medication-related incidents occurred. Nursing staff lacked specialized training in motivational interviewing and comprehensive adherence assessment. This project developed and implemented an evidence-based educational program to enhance nursing competencies in psychiatric medication adherence counseling. Seven nursing staff members (5 registered nurses, 2 licensed practical nurses) participated in a 90-minute session incorporating the four-domain assessment framework, motivational interviewing techniques, and psychoeducational strategies. The ADDIE framework guided program development with interactive discussions, case-based learning, and role-play …

Scaffold-aware artificial intelligence (AI) models enable systematic exploration of chemical space conditioned on protein-interacting ligands, yet the representational principles governing their behavior remain poorly understood. The computational representation of structurally complex kinase small molecules remains a formidable challenge due to the high conservation of ATP active site architecture across the kinome and the topological complexity of structural scaffolds in current generative AI frameworks. In this study, we present a diagnostic, modular and chemistry-first generative framework for design of targeted SRC kinase ligands by integrating ChemVAE-based latent space modeling, a chemically interpretable structural similarity metric (Kinase Likelihood Score), Bayesian optimization, and …
Transforming Reproductive Health Through Education: A Menstrual Health Literacy And Empowerment Questionnaire To Support Psychological Well-Being, Francesca Dellamaggiore
Transforming Reproductive Health Through Education: A Menstrual Health Literacy And Empowerment Questionnaire To Support Psychological Well-Being, Francesca Dellamaggiore
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Menstrual health remains an underexamined area within psychological and reproductive health research despite its relevance to emotional functioning, self-advocacy, health literacy, and overall well-being. Limited education about the menstrual cycle, combined with persistent stigma and misinformation, may leave many individuals unprepared to understand their bodies and communicate effectively with healthcare providers. The present study aimed to develop and provide a preliminary psychometric evaluation of the Menstrual Health Literacy and Empowerment (MHLE) Questionnaire, a novel measure designed to assess menstrual cycle knowledge, menstrual attitudes, and empowerment-related processes associated with psychological well-being. Participants were recruited through community and university-based sampling methods and …

In an article published in Nature titled “ChatGPT listed as author in research papers” Stone-Walker (2023) shocks the academic community with the fact that GenAI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini have gained a substantive role in the production of knowledge and academic writing. He reports that one research company has published 80 articles produced by GenAI in academic journals. In the wake of Stone-Walker’s article, many publishers and journal editors set guidelines in relations to the role of GenAI in academic writings. All of them disagree to allow GenAI as an author. Further, the Stanford University Artificial Intelligence Index …
