Conclusions
1. Under experimental conditions wild boars are sensitive to toxoplasmosis to a significant degree. In all 6 of the infected animals the disease ended lethally. The characteristic clinical symptom was involvement of the eyes.
2. Spontaneous Toxoplasma antibodies were observed in 36 (34.3%) of 105 boars studied with CFRs.
3. Toxoplasma was found microscopically in smears of kidney, spleen, and brain from 3 boars; the bioprobe method revealed it in the lymph nodes of 10 animals; in these cases the strain isolated was avirulent.

Federal Aid To State Legislatures: Problems And Potential, Walter J. Oleszek
Federal Aid To State Legislatures: Problems And Potential, Walter J. Oleszek
Nebraska Law Review
Many scholars and other observers have argued that state legislatures are ill-equipped to play a vital role in the federal system, and yet they must play such a role if pressing national problems are to be met. Government at all levels faces the difficulty of resolving such issues as air and water pollution, urban blight, traffic congestion, inadequate housing, unemployment and underemployment, racial unrest, educational and recreational deficiencies, and rising crime. National, state, and local governments are partners in the federal system. With this goal in mind, a novel idea in federal-state relations has been proposed. It concerns the use …

Protein Synthesis During Fungal Spore Germination. Iv. Transfer Ribonucleic Acid From Germinated And Ungerminated Spores, James L. Van Etten, R. Kent Koski, Mahmoud El-Olemy
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) fractions isolated from germinated and ungerminated spores of Botryodiplodia theobromae and Rhizopus stolonifer had acceptor activity for all 20 amino acids commonly found in protein, when tested with an enzyme fraction from germinated spores. Accordingly, it is unlikely that the absence of tRNA for a particular amino acid limits protein synthesis in fungal spores.

Fecal specimens were collected on 22 different Nebraska ranches and at the Department of Veterinary Science from young calves and pigs with neonatal diarrhea. Enterobacteriaceae isolated from these fecal specimens were screened for resistance to tetracycline, streptomycin, sulfamethizole, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, colistin, nitrofurantoin, and nalidixic acid. Of the 92 strains studied, 57 were resistant to one or more of these antimicrobial agents. Resistant strains were obtained from all herds involved in the study. The two most common resistance patterns were tetracycline streptomycin sulfamethizole (22 of 57) and tetracycline (13 of 57). None of the strains were resistant to chloramphenicol, colistin, nitrofurantoin, …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
A Grahamella-like organism (Schizomycetes: Bartonellaceae) was found in erythrocytes of laboratory-reared northern voles, Microtus oeconomus Pallas, which had been inoculated intraperitoneally with a saline suspension of ground fleas, Megabothris abantis (Roths.), from wild northern voles captured at Lower Ugashik Lake, Alaska Peninsula. A live-trapped northern vole from the same locality harbored trypanosomes referable to T. microti (Mastigasida: Trypanosomatidae). Two morphologically similar but biologically different strains of piroplasms (Piroplasmasida: Theileriidae) of uncertain generic status were isolated from northern voles of Ugashik Lake origin and from northern red-backed voles, Clethrionomys rutilus Pallas, from the vicinity of Anchorage, Alaska. In the natural …

Beggar-Tick Injury To A Northern Cricket Frog And Two Species Of Minnows, Larry A. Witt, Leonard H. Sisson
Beggar-Tick Injury To A Northern Cricket Frog And Two Species Of Minnows, Larry A. Witt, Leonard H. Sisson
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Various authors have reported on injury to small fishes by achenes of beggar-ticks (Bidem sp.) Reimers and Bond (1966) reported on injury by beggar-ticks to redside shiners, Richardsonius balteatus and young chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. They suggested that presence of beggar-tick plants along banks of hatchery ponds and raceways might be injurious to young of the most aggressive feeders among fish. Allison (1967) described mortality of fingerling coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, caused by beggar-tick, B. cernuus, achenes. He noted losses of coho salmon 51 to 90 mm in total length held in hatchery raceways. Dead and …

Nationwide Residues Of Organochlorine Pesticides In Wings Of Mallards And Black Ducks, Robert G. Heath
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Nationwide monitoring of organochlorine pesticides in wings of more than 24,000 mallards and black ducks bagged during the 1965 and 1966 hunting seasons showed DDE to be the predominant residue, followed in order by DDT, DDD, dieldrin, and heptachlor epoxide. Residues were generally highest in wings from the Atlantic and Pacific Flyways, and lowest in the Central Flyway. DDE was reported for every State and was notably high in wings from New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Alabama, California, and Utah. Dieldrin residues were prevalent in wings from Arkansas, Texas, Utah, California, and several States in the …

Digenetic Trematodes Of Marine Teleost Fishes From Biscayne Bay, Florida, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
This study includes 111 species of Digenea from 69 of 113 species of teleost fishes examined from Biscayne Bay, Florida. Biscayne Bay represents the reported northern limit along the Atlantic coast for all but 22 of the 111 species. It represents the southern limit for only one, Didymocystis scomberomori. From the known collections reported in the literature, the Digenea from Biscayne Bay appear to consist primarily of a tropical fauna. Species previously known from the Pacific Ocean only are Botulisaccus pisceus and Pseudocreadium scaphosomum. There are 81 new host records.
Two new genera are created: Claribulla (Felloclistomatidae) and …

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications
Introduction
This review is limited to the structures and a few reactions of the pesticides mainly insecticides-that affect mammalian systems and that are the subject of papers by other authors in this monograph. There is no attempt to give a complete review of the chemistry of pesticides. It is intended only to show the breadth and depth of pesticide chemistry through the use of examples. With proper use of the references, and of the papers by Crosby, Freed and Montgomery, and Owens in this monograph, the reader will be able to find information for other chemicals.

Magnitude And Pattern Of Compensatory Growth In Rats After Cold Exposure, Marjorie Lee, P. C. Chu, H. C. Chan
College of Dentistry: Faculty Publications
It is a common observation that normal growth is affected or suppressed in young individuals by environmental adversities and physical disturbances. On the other hand, when health or favorable conditions are restored, the tempo of growth promptly accelerates as if the individual is trying to make up for the growth debt incurred. Tanner has referred to this increased growth rate after diseases or starvation as compensatory or 'catch-up' growth, a topic on which he has written eloquently and fully in a number of articles (1963a, b). He considers this compensatory growth as a 'self-stabilizing' or 'target-seeking' phenomenon in the regulatory …

Transferable Drug Resistance Among Enterobacteriaceae Isolated From Human Urinary Tract Infections, Donna G. Sieckmann, Norman D. Reed, Carl E. Georgi
Papers in Microbiology
Fifteen sulfonamide-resistant cultures isolated from urinary tract infections in eastern Nebraska were screened for transferable drug resistance by three methods. Seven of the 15 resistant cultures could transfer resistance of varying levels to two or more chemotherapeutic agents. Transfer of drug resistance occurred without accompanying transfer of chromosomal traits and required cell to cell contact. In mixed culture, the number of drug-resistant recipients increased exponentially, reaching a plateau 2 hr after mixing. Spontaneous or artificial elimination of resistance was found to be a rare event. In addition, several drug-sensitive isolates from urinary tract infections were shown to be competent recipients …

One hundred eighty-three woodpeckers of eight species collected in Louisiana were examined for Acanthocephala. Only the red-bellied woodpecker, Centurus carolinus, was infected. One of 53 was parasitized by an immature specimen of Mediorhynchus grandis; three by Centrorhynchus spinosus; 12 by Mediorhynchus centurorum sp. n. The new species of Mediorhynchus is distinguished by a trunk which is very narrow in the anterior 3 mm, but is suddenly expanded farther posteriad. Proboscis armature of 22 to 24 slightly spiral rows of six hooks and four or five spines each differs from all other species of the genus except M. …

Calf Diarrhea (Scours): Reproduced With A Virus From A Field Outbreak, C. A. Mebus, N. R. Underdahl, M. B. Rhodes, M. J. Twiehaus
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Neonatal calf diarrhea typical of that seen in field cases was produced in colostrum-deprived calves by inoculating either feces or bacteria-free filtrates via the duodenum, orally, or by a spray (aerosol). Three calves, kept free of E. coli, developed severe diarrhea following inoculation with a bacteria-free filtrate. Intense fluorescence in the epithelium of sections of small intestine from two experimental calves was observed following staining with ftuorescein-labeled gamma globulin produced with viral antigen prepared from the feces of two experimental diarrhetic E. coli-free calves. Fluorescing cells were also present in the feces of experimental and field cases of neonatal …

Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris
Behavior Of Pesticides In Plants, Logan A. Norris
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
A number of chemicals of diverse characteristics have arbitrarily been classed together on the basis of their use and given the descriptive name "pesticides. " An unfortunate aura of mystery has developed about these chemicals. However, there is nothing unique or mysterious about the chemicals we refer to as "pesticides." Like other chemicals, they have properties which can be accurately measured; they obey all the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology.
