Conference Participants -- 4th Vertebrate Pest Conference,

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 4th (1970)

The Fourth Vertebrate Pest Conference was the largest ever, with 275 registered participants and an estimated additional 50 to 75 persons who attended portions of the conference but did not register. The attendance was made up of individuals having varying interests in vertebrate pest problems, including foresters, agriculturalists, conservationists, pest control operators, vector control specialists, health officials, wildlife specialists, product distributors and manufacturers, instructors and researchers from twenty nine states plus the District of Columbia. Participants from Canada, England, Germany and Japan provided an international touch which contributed greatly to the success of the conference.

Carbamate Baits Discourage Blackbirds From Using Feedlots, Paul P. Woronecki, Joseph L. Guarino, Jerome F. Besser, John W. De Grazio Feb 1970

Carbamate Baits Discourage Blackbirds From Using Feedlots, Paul P. Woronecki, Joseph L. Guarino, Jerome F. Besser, John W. De Grazio

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 4th (1970)

Red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) have been discouraged from using cattle feedlots near Denver, Colorado, by baiting alleys with cracked corn treated with an aversion-producing immobi1izing agent, DRC-736 [4-(methylthio)-3,5-xylyl N-methylcarbamate]. In three studies, large populations of redwings were reduced 70% - 98% within a few days and protection lasted about a month. In a fourth study, simultaneous baiting of three heavily used feedlots reduced redwing use by more than 90% within hours and was apparently responsible for these birds abandoning their roost and relocating in areas where they caused little trouble. Mortality was low (less than 5% of affected redwings in …

Surfactants As Blackbird Stressing Agents, Paul W. Lefebvre, John L. Seubert

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 4th (1970)

Applications of wetting-agent solutions produce mortality in birds. The exact cause of death is undetermined, but it is believed that destruction of the insulating qualities of the plumage permits ambient cold temperatures and evaporation to lower the body temperature to a lethal level. The original concept of using these materials as bird-control tools was developed in 1958 at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, Laurel, Maryland. Early field trials by personnel of the Division of Wildlife Services and the Denver Wildlife Research Center indicated that ground-application techniques had promise, but limitations of the equipment precluded …

Spinitectus Beaveri Sp. N. (Nematoda: Spiruroidea) From The Bonefish, Albula Vulpes (Linnaeus), In Florida, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Spinitectus beaveri sp. n. from the stomach of Albula vulpes is described. In the male, the maximum length is 6 mm, the esophagus is approximately 30% of the body length, the spicule ratio is 1:2.5 to 3.0, and there are 4 pre- and 5 postcloacal papillae. In the female, the maximum length is 7 mm, the esophagus is approximately 27% of the body length, and approximately 38% of the body length is posterior to the vulva. The species most closely resembles S. carolini Holl, 1928, from which it differs by having 10 to 16 rather than 25 to 35 cuticular …

Response Of Nuclear Emulsion To Electron Beams, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich Jan 1970

Response Of Nuclear Emulsion To Electron Beams, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich

Robert Katz Publications

A recent theory of particle tracks assumes that the probability P for grain development in nuclear emulsion depends on the local dose E of ionization energy deposited by secondary electrons (delta rays) in the neighborhood of the particle track. The response is assumed to be one of exponential survival; that is, if E0 is the dose for 37% survival, then P = 1 – exp (-E/E0). By calculation of the dose E(t) deposited at depth t in the emulsion by normally incident, monoenergetic electron beams, and applying the assumed dose-effect relationship, …

A call has been issued by Turner and Hollister in this journal for nomination of a suitable combination of charge and velocity to replace LET. It is the purpose of this communication to point out that no single combination of these variables can fully characterize track effects, as these are affected by the ratio of the range rm of the delta ray of maximum energy to the radius a0 of the sensitive volume.

American Bar Foundation Project Legal Services Survey Report, Douglas N. King, David R. Parker, Peter M. Smith, James R. Cook, Samuel F. Seever

Nebraska Law Review

During March of 1969, the Nebraska Law Review accepted a grant from the American Bar Foundation to fund a survey of legal services for the poor in civil matters in the State of Nebraska. This report is the culmination of that survey and was prepared with a threefold purpose: (1) to present the data generated by the survey, (2) to serve as a planning guide for the Nebraska State Bar Association, and (3) to document the procedures used in conducting the survey to assist subsequent studies of a similar nature. To fulfill these objectives, the report is organized as follows: …

The Proposed Eastern Nebraska International Airport Plan, George T. C. Peng, Joseph H. Bain Jan 1970

The Proposed Eastern Nebraska International Airport Plan, George T. C. Peng, Joseph H. Bain

Nebraskiana Publications: Resources and Materials on the 37th State

Excerpt from the prologue:

Passenger growth has led to expansion of facilities at both the Omaha and Lincoln airports; but like many others in the nation, they are rapidly becoming congested. The Federal Aviation Administration, the State Government officials, and many civic leaders in Nebraska are now becoming aware of the need for establishing a regional airport for the Eastern Nebraska region in order to promote and handle international air transportation for the future. People are also beginning to think of such a modern airport as an essential factor in bringing new industries to Nebraska and in shaping the urbanization …

1970 Nebraska Beef Cattle Report, J. L. Adams, E. F. Frolik, H. W. Ottoson, F. E. Eldridge

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The use of high concentrate rations in finishing cattle has led to a rather high loss of livers due to abscesses.

The 1967 Statistical Summary of the Federal Meat Inspection Service of the USDA indicated the total number of cattle inspected was 27,859,980. Of these, 9.6% were condemned because of liver abscess. Considering the value of a liver to be about $3, the estimated loss to the industry because of condemnatIon due to abscess would be over $8 million annually.

The incidence of liver abscesses increases as the roughage level in a finishing ration decreases below 5% (Table I). The …

Some Ecological Relations Of Fairy Shrimps In Alkaline Habitats Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher Jan 1970

Some Ecological Relations Of Fairy Shrimps In Alkaline Habitats Of Nebraska, D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Ecological studies on the distribution of fairy shrimps have been made from 246 sites in the sandhills region of Nebraska. New records for Nebraska have been established for Artemia salina, Branchinecta campestris, B. lindahli, B. mackini and Cyzicus mexicanus. Seasonal populations of shrimp have been located in habitats containing permanent fish populations. Water mineralization was the dominant environmental condition related to the distribution of phyllopods with sodium and potassium compounds predominating in the strongly alkaline lakes. Several of the Artemia lakes were classified as hydroxide sites. Many of the alkaline ponds, where B. lindahli and B. campestris flourish, are …
