Religio-Scientific Relationships In The Twentieth And The Thirteenth Centuries, Nicholas Dietz Jr. Jan 1972

Religio-Scientific Relationships In The Twentieth And The Thirteenth Centuries, Nicholas Dietz Jr.

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Our whole planet became conscious of a religio-scientific relationship during the moon-orbiting Apollo 8 flight, at Christmas, 1968. Its astronauts were the first men to leave the gravitation of Earth, the first to come under another gravitational body, the first to travel so far from Earth (233,000 miles), the first to see the other side of the moon. Contemplation of the scientific and technical achievements of their Mission against a new background of the incredibly immense Universe and the wonders of its creation, led them to depart from flight plan to re-read to planet Earth from outer space the Genesis …

Multilocularis Leuckart, 1863, In The Intermediate Host, Masashi Ohbayashi, Robert L. Rausch, Francis H. Fay

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

This paper reports the results of a comparative study of the development of the larval Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863), and associated tissue reaction in naturally and experimentally infected mammals representing 31 species. The histogenesis of the larval cestode was traced in detail in arvicoline rodents of several species, and interspecific differences were defined.

In arvicoline rodents, the developing larva exhibited host-specific characteristics within about a month after infection was established. The tissue reaction in Microtus oeconomus was characterized by the production of a large quantity of detritus around the larva, and by the formation of a thick epithelioid zone. In …

The Somatic Chromosomes Of Some North American Marmots (Sciuridae), With Remarks On The Relationships Of Marmota Browerii Hall And Gilmore, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia R. Rausch Mar 1971

The Somatic Chromosomes Of Some North American Marmots (Sciuridae), With Remarks On The Relationships Of Marmota Browerii Hall And Gilmore, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia R. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Karyotypes are defined for two nearctic species of marmots, Marmota olympus (2n = 40) and M. vancouverensis (2n = 42), and supplemental information is included on the karyotypes of M. flaviventris, M. monax ochracea, and M. marmota. The six North American species of Marmota (NF = 66) comprise a distinct group as compared with the middle Asian species (NF = 70) for which the karyotypes are known. Karyologic findings and zoogeographic evidence based upon the distribution of two nearctic species of host-specific cestodes indicate that M. broweri, in northern Alaska, is a pre-Würm relict. Its affinities …

Genetic And Environmental Aspects Of Udder Infections, J. W. Wilton, L. Dale Van Vleck, R. W. Everett, R. S. Guthrie, S. J. Roberts

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Information on the presence or absence of bacterial infections and abnormal secretions in each quarter of cows in their initial survey on the New York State Veterinary College Mastitis Program was used to obtain several criteria of udder infection. Year-season and stage of lactation effects were statistically significant for several criteria of infection in first, second, and later lactation groups but did not explain much of the variation in any infection criterion. Age within first and second lactation group also accounted for little of the variation in infection although age within later lactations accounted for up to 5% of the …

The Flathead Catfish In Unchannelized And Channelized Missouri River, Nebraska, Larry A. Morris, Ralph Langemeier, Arthur Witt Jr.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Flathead catfish, Pylodictus olivaris (Rafinesque), were studied in approximately 83.7 km of unchannelized and 67.6 km miles of channelized Missouri River. Growth rates were slower in the unchannelized section than they were in the channelized section. The oldest fish in the unchannelized section was 25 years old, while in the channelized study area the oldest was 10 years. In the pectoral spines of progressively older fish from both sections, enlargement of the lumen obliterated early annuli. Much of the annual increment of growth was accomplished during June, July and August. Males became sexually mature at 3 to 4 years of …
