Mycobacteriosis (Tuberculosis) Of Fishes, S. F. Snieszko Jan 1978

Mycobacteriosis (Tuberculosis) Of Fishes, S. F. Snieszko

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Mycobacteria are widely distributed in nature. They are abundant in the soil, on the surface of plants, on the skin of vertebrates, in human food (e.g., milk and butter), and in animal feeds. Most mycobacteria are saprophytic, but some species are highly pathogenic and cause diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy in humans, and similar diseases in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes.

Mycobacteria that cause diseases of fishes differ considerably from those that cause diseases in humans and other mammals. Therefore, to avoid association between tuberculosis in mammals and mycobacterial infections in fishes, it is better to call the …

1978 Nebraska Beef Cattle Report, Leo E. Lucas, H. W. Ottoson, T. E. Hartung

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Retail value of wholesale meat cuts is influenced by quality and the proportion of lean, fat and bone. Wholesale cuts vary widely in value; for example, loins and ribs sell for more than rounds, rounds more than chucks, and chucks more than flanks, plates, or briskets. This value difference has prompted many attempts to find breeding and feeding systems that will increase the proportion of high-priced cuts.

Results shown here characterize the composition of carcass wholesale cuts from 14 breed combinations that were part of a cattle germ plasm evaluation program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center, …

A Comparison Of The Acceptance Of Selected In-Service Training Approaches By Field-Dependent Independent Home Economics Cooperating Teacher In The State Of Nebraska, Cheryl G. Fedje

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to compare the acceptance of three competency-based teacher education modules by field-dependent-independent Nebraska home economics cooperating teachers in a group setting and in an independent learning environment. The study explored three major questions: 1. Is there a difference in the satisfaction level of field-dependent and field-independent home economics cooperating teachers in specified competency-based teacher education modules?

2. Is there a difference in the achievement level of field-dependent and field-independent home economics cooperating teachers in terms of satisfactory completion of the learning activities included in specified competency-based teacher education modules?

3. Will field-dependent home economics …

Movement And Migration Patterns Of Red-Winged Blackbirds: A Continental Overview, Richard A. Dolbeer Jan 1978

Movement And Migration Patterns Of Red-Winged Blackbirds: A Continental Overview, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

From 1924 through 1974, about 11,000 recoveries accumulated from the banding of over 700,000 Red-winged Blackbirds(Agelaius phoeniceus) in North America. A few studies have examined some of these data for specific localities during certain times of the year; however, no attempt has been made to examine the total recovery data to compile a general picture of continental movement and migration patterns. Increasing attention is being given to blackbird (Icteridae) and Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) populations in North America because of their reported crop depredations, health hazards, and nuisance aspects, especially when congregating in large roosts (Meanley,1975;Graham, 1976). Solutions to these problems …

Social Experience And Moral Judgment In East African Young Adults, Carolyn P. Edwards Jan 1978

Social Experience And Moral Judgment In East African Young Adults, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Relationships between stage of moral judgment and antecedent social experiences are presented for a non-Western sample of young adults. Crosssectional data are presented for two groups of Kenyan students: 52 University of Nairobi students; and 40 fourth form secondary school Ss. Critical variables are (a) family modernization, (b) attending ethnically pluralistic secondary schools, and (c) living independently away from home. The correlations between moral judgment stage and these three variables are controlled for, and compared to, correlations between stage of moral judgment and age, sex, race, and academic ability (as measured by standardized achievement tests or by grades). The …

The Comparative Method In Stratigraphy: The Beginning And End Of An Ice Age, Thompson Mylan Stout Jan 1978

The Comparative Method In Stratigraphy: The Beginning And End Of An Ice Age, Thompson Mylan Stout

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Glaciation should now be treated as a regularly repetitive process, not as an irregular process through geologic time. If so, the changes in volume of the world ocean (glacio-eustasy) may be expected to account primarily for the major advances and retreats of the sea (the "pulsations" of Grabau) that arc global and characteristic of all continental platforms (cratonic margins). These larger cycles, best termed stages (equivalent to the "megacycles" or "megacyclothems" of Moore, and to the "mesothems" of Ramsbottom), resemble the Quaternary Model, whether comparison is made with sedimentary cycles of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, or Tertiary. Conversely, the Quaternary may …

Chemistry Of Low-Valent Molybdenum Phosphite Complexes: Models Of Seven-Coordinate Reaction Intermediates, E. L. Muetterties, J. F. Kirner, W. J. Evans, S. Abdel-Meguid, I. Tavanaiepour, V. W. Day Jan 1978

Chemistry Of Low-Valent Molybdenum Phosphite Complexes: Models Of Seven-Coordinate Reaction Intermediates, E. L. Muetterties, J. F. Kirner, W. J. Evans, S. Abdel-Meguid, I. Tavanaiepour, V. W. Day

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

A simple synthesis of the zerovalent complex Mo[P(OCH3)3]6 has been devised from a potassium reduction of MoCI4(tetrahydrofuran)2 followed by reaction with trimethyl phosphite at 70°. Protonation of this octahedral complex gave only low yields of the expected seven-coordinate hydride, HMo[P(OCH3)3]6+. The major product was an octahedral nonhydridic cation, Mo[P(OCH3)3]5P(OCH3)2+, derived from proton cleavage of the P─O phosphite ester bond. This octahedral cation was stereochemically nonrigid, apparently through facile methoxy group migration. Close packing by methoxy groups …

Regulation Of Protein Synthesis In Rabbit Reticulocyte Lysates By The Heme-Regulated Protein Kinase: Inhibition Of Interaction Of Met-TrnaFMet Binding Factor With Another Initiation Factor In Formation Of Met-TrnaFMet.4os Ribosomal Subunit Complexes, R. S. Ranu, I. M. London, A. Das, A. Dasgupta, A. Majumdar, R. Ralston, R. Roy, N. K. Gupta

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Protein synthesis in reticulocytes and their lysates is regulated by heme. In heme deficiency a heme-regulated translational inhibitor (HRI) that blocks initiation of polypeptide chains is activated. HRI is a protein kinase (ATP: protein phosphotransferase, EC 2.7.1.37) that specifically phosphorylates the 38,000-dalton subunit of the Met-tRNAfMet indin factor (IF), which forms a ternary complex with Met- tRNAfMet and GTP, a finding that suggests that the inhibition by HRI involves the phosphorylation of IF. We have investigated the effect of HRI in the partial reactions of protein chain initiation in which the IF-promoted binding of Met-tRNAf …

This study deals with the effect of Eimeria nieschulzi infection on the host immune response to Trichinella spiralis. Six male Sprague-Dawley rats were inoculated with 104 and six with 106; sporulated E. nieschulzi oocysts. On days 2, 8, and 16 post-inoculation (PI), two rats from each infected group, and their paired uninfected controls, were killed and mucosal scrapings from their small intestines were assayed for peroxidase activity. Peroxidase levels were higher than corresponding control values on days 2 and 16 PI and significantly lower than the controls on day 8 PI. These data led us to …

Coyote And Dog Depredations, Joe Schaefer, Ronald D. Andrews

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

The objective of this study is to determine the impact of coyote and dog depredation on the sheep industry in southern Iowa and to evaluate the livestock husbandry practices associated with these losses. In order to obtain background information on sheep management practices and the number of alleged livestock losses caused by coyotes and dogs in southern Iowa, a questionnaire was sent to 3,173 sheep producers. Sixty-nine percent of the 1,260 respondents indicated that they did not have any problem with coyote depredations during 1975. However, the major cause of mortality was reported to have been coyote predation which accounted …

Predation On Furbearers And Management Alternatives, Ronald D. Andrews

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Most of the presentations from other members of the panel have discussed direct predation of one animal upon another with evidence and data to support it. Their presentations indicate that in some instances, considerable data has been collected that substantiates the fact that predation has been and can be a limiting factor in sustaining certain local animal populations. Suggestions have also been made concerning management alternatives that might help to reduce this predatory impact when desirable. Predation on furbearers and its impact is considerably more ambiguous and abstract. Facts and data concerning significant predation on furbearers, except for mink on …

Youth Fur Harvest Programs, Edward K. Boggess Dec 1977

Youth Fur Harvest Programs, Edward K. Boggess

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Youth fur harvest programs in Kansas have been developed as one phase of an overall series of youth education projects on ecology and the environment. Currently, the series includes Ecology, Acres for Wildlife, Kansas Mammals, Birds Around You, Reptiles and Amphibians, Fur Harvest, and Fishing. Basically, the fur harvester project was developed because, although many young people in the state are interested in trapping, few good sources of information or instruction were available to most young trappers. Because many objectionable trapping abuses are unintentionally caused by young or inexperienced trappers, it was hoped that this project would encourage ethical and …

Trapper Education And Furbearer Management, Edward K. Boggess Dec 1977

Trapper Education And Furbearer Management, Edward K. Boggess

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Modern concepts of furbearer harvest on a controlled, sustained-yield basis are in accordance with recognized principles of wildlife management and natural resource conservation. Steel traps, in the hands of private citizens and regulated by state fish and game agencies, have been the primary tools used in this country for managing furbearers. Fur resource managers recognize that traps are important tools not only in furbearer management, but also in some programs of wildlife damage or disease control. Traps also provide a major source of outdoor recreation for many people.
