Movement Types And Weather Correlates In Free-Ranging Meadow Voles, Dale M. Madison
Movement Types And Weather Correlates In Free-Ranging Meadow Voles, Dale M. Madison
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) were radiotracked in their natural environment from June through August 1974, 1975 and 1978. Four different types of movement were observed: residency, shifting, wandering and dispersal. Next to the residency pattern, wandering was the most common form of movement and probably was important during breeding activities. Dispersal was a rare event and is probably confused with wandering in the existing literature.
A total of 17 weather variables were analyzed for correlations with vole movement. Male voles showed a distinct tendency to move more widely during periods of dry weather. The latter was attributed to …

Textural And Taste Influences On Gnawing By Pine Voles, Lynette A. Geyer, James N. Cummins
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Pine voles and meadow voles exhibited differential preferences for various Malus clones. When damage to dormant stems in a 24-hr test was assessed by either a graded damage scale or percentage consumption by weight, pine voles preferred Golden Delicious, M.9, and M.26 and consistently avoided M.x sublobata PI 286613 ("613") and related clones and Robusta 5. Dehydrating stems magnified the disparity among cultivars, as attractive stems continued to suffer extensive damage, while 613 became even less palatable. In the autumn phase all varieties showed increased acceptance. Meadow voles, like pine voles, exhibited differential acceptance of cultivars, but their preferences differed …

Preliminary Field Observations Of Meadow Vole Preferences Among Selected Apple Clones, Karen Pearson, J. N. Cummins, John Barnard
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Damage by voles has continued to be a major cause of tree mortality American orchards despite nearly universal use of herbicides and rodenticide. (1,7). To reduce damage done by voles in infested orchards, one valuable tool could be use of a stock system that voles found highly unattractive. Having such stock systems in place would be particularly valuable during periods when the orchardist could neither bait nor spray for control.
A cooperative VPI/Cornell research project initiated in 1974 identified a few cultivars with relatively high levels of resistance to pine voles, as expressed in free-choice tests under laboratory conditions. This …

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Broadcast treatments of Volak (Brodifacoum) applied at rates of approx. 20 lbs/acre gave 98% control of voles when active ingredient levels were from 0.005% to 0.0005% in the bait. Of the two Rozol (Chlorophacinone)formulations tested, the French (Lipha) pelleted formulation appeared to be slightly better than what is currently being marketed in the USA. The Maki (Bromodialone) bait formulated in the same wax bait carrier as the Rozol-USA gave no better control than Rozol. Ramik-Brown (Diphacinone) did not appear to be as good as the other anticoagulants tested when applied either as a broad¬cast or as a hand placed bait. …

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Since the loss of DDT, Vacor (DPL 787) and other acute rodenticides and the serious use restrictions placed upon strychnine and 1080 for field use, it has become quite apparent that control of field rodents, more particular pine and meadow voles, with standard anticoagulants has become a difficult task, and in some instances impossible.
Bell Laboratories, Inc. has chosen to take a very serious look at many of the older compounds and rework and reformulate these compounds into palatable and efficacious finished baits. After 5 years of research and development. Bell Laboratories, Inc. has recently registered, with the Environmental Protection …

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FOURTH EASTERN PINE AND MEADOW VOLE SYMPOSIUM
The Fourth Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposium was held in Hendersonvi1le, North Carolina February 21 and 22, 1980 for the primary purpose of assessing the current status of research and extension pro¬grams relating to the problem of vole damage to fruit trees. The meeting was designed to be informative and to create an atmosphere whereby growers and various agencies such as EPA, USDA, USDI, the chemical industry and university personnel could observe the current thrust of vole research programs and their potential impact on future control methods. …

Management Model For Pine Voles: Preliminary Report, John F. Coyle, Alan R. Tipton
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
The use of computer models in scientific research has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade. One of the primary reasons for this growth is the increased realization that computers and more specifically computer models, can be useful tools in synthe¬sizing large amounts of information and providing insight into problem areas of research and management.
Numerous books and papers have been written on the justification for modeling, the philosophy of modeling, and model development and utilization. Recent reviews of small mammal population models are given by Conley and Nichols (1978) and Stenseth (1977). This paper will not address …

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
The North Carolina integrated, pest and. orchard, management project (IPOMS) has moved, from the data-gathering phase into an experimental information delivery system. We present here for possible comment the •written directions for vole monitoring that we prepared, for use by the orchard, specialists who will implement the monitoring and advisory system.
IPOMS started, in 1976 as a joint effort of a number of subject matter departments under the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service. A brief description of this cooperative effort of horticulturists, entomologists, plant pathologists, economists, zoologists and soil and weed. scientists has been presented to this group (Hayne 1978). …

Semiconservative Synthesis Of Single-Stranded Rna By Bacteriophage Φ6 Rna Polymerase, James L. Van Etten, Dwight E. Burbank, Diane A. Cuppels, Leslie C. Lane, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The RNA polymerase in the nucleocapsid of seudomonas phaseolicola bacteriophage φ6 transcribed large, medium, and small single-stranded RNA from the viral double-stranded RNA genome by a semiconservative (displacement) mechanism. Approximately 23%, 63%, and 65% of the nucleocapsid particles in the assay mixture synthesized at least one round of large, medium, and small single-stranded RNA molecules, respectively. Some of these particles reinitiated synthesis such that an average of 1.5 large, 33 medium, and 24 small singlestranded RNAs were synthesized from each double-stranded RNA.

Parasite Population Regulation: Lethal And Sublethal Effects Of Leptorhynchoides Thecatus (Acanthocephala: Rhadinorhynchidae) On Hyalella Azteca (Amphipoda), Richard L. Uznanski, Brent B. Nickol
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The hypothesis that Leptorhynchoides thecatus populations are regulated by mortality of heavily infected intermediate hosts, Hyalella azteca, was examined experimentally. Mortality related to the infection process could not be demonstrated because no survivorship difference occurred between amphipod groups exposed to L. thecatus and unexposed control groups after 24 hours Likewise, amphipod mortality could not be associated with infection intensity during this period. Amphipod mortality, growth, and infection intensity were monitored for 25 days after a 24-hour exposure period. Cystacanths were infective to fish after 25 days. Survivorship of exposed amphipods was at least as great as that of unexposed …
Take A Beetle To Lunch Today Or The Natural History Of Dung Beetles, Brett C. Ratcliffe
Take A Beetle To Lunch Today Or The Natural History Of Dung Beetles, Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
The appellation "dung beetles" refers to those scarab beetles that are usually found with animal feces either feeding on or depositing eggs in it. While this at first may seem like an incredibly unsavory topic, the fact remains that numerous creatures exist that feed on the waste products of other animals. And, as it turns out, it's a good thing they do.
The Scarabaeidae, or scarabs, is one of the larger families of beetles; it has 30,000 plus species worldwide and approximately 15,000 species in North America. (See my Museum Notes of March 1970.) The family is divided into subfamilies …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Not all trees or shrubs can find a home in your yard or apartment. Help your child to discover a home for the tree or shrub he or she grows or receives. The greatest benefit of this Plant-A-Tree project is being close to a living plant. This project will: introduce five tree planters - one from each area of Nebraska, discuss the parts of tree seeds, give examples of how tree seeds travel, discuss preparation of soil, demonstrate how to grow a seedling tree from seed, demonstrate how to transplant a tree, and offer suggestions for activities and exhibits.
G80-493 Developing Replacement Beef Heifers (Weaning-Breeding), Gene H. Deutscher
G80-493 Developing Replacement Beef Heifers (Weaning-Breeding), Gene H. Deutscher
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the proper selection, nutrition, breeding, and management of replacement beef heifers from weaning to breeding. Proper selection and development of replacement heifers is one of the most important management programs in beef production. Replacement heifers should be selected and managed so they will conceive and calve early in the calving season, provide adequate milk production, and rebreed and calve every 365 days. Heifers bred as yearlings to calve as two-year-olds will produce an extra calf in their lifetime compared to heifers calving as three-year-olds, without detrimental effects on mature size, milk production, or calf weaning weights. The …

The Parlement Of Foules: Aristotle's Politics And The Foundations Of Human Society, Paul A. Olson
The Parlement Of Foules: Aristotle's Politics And The Foundations Of Human Society, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
RECENT studies in The Parlement of Foules have made it fairly clear that the two fabulous places in the poem, Venus' hothouse and Nature's hill, are representations of contrasting systems of value or ways of loving. The primary emphasis of the criticism has been on the work as a "question d'amour" poem in which the debate concerns how human beings should conduct the amorous life or how love may be redirected toward the God of Nature and his glorious creation. Without wishing to denigrate such interpretations, I want to urge an alternative view--one which sees the discussion of love between …
G80-495 Managing Two-Year-Old Beef Heifers (Calving - Rebreeding), Gene H. Deutscher
G80-495 Managing Two-Year-Old Beef Heifers (Calving - Rebreeding), Gene H. Deutscher
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the nutrition and management practices recommended for beef heifers during precalving, calving, and early lactation periods. Proper development of replacement heifers has a great influence on the success of calving and rebreeding them as two-year-olds. NebGuide G80-493, Developing Replacement Beef Heifers (Weaning-Breeding), points out that proper selection, adequate nutrition, and judgment in sire selection are all important management factors for developing heifers into high producing cows. With good management before breeding, a high percentage of heifers should be bred early in a short breeding season. Heifers should be pregnancy checked and the open ones culled. Thereafter, the …
Population Regulation In Wolves, Jane M. Packard, L. David Mech
Population Regulation In Wolves, Jane M. Packard, L. David Mech
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The possibility of social regulation of wolf populations has been discussed in the literature for several years. Some of the first ecological studies of wolves indicated that their populations did not increase as rapidly as was theoretically possible, and that they reached a saturation point apparently not set by food. Subsequent captive studies demonstrated the existence of social mechanisms possibly capable of regulating population growth. However, the importance of these factors in wild populations has not been established. This paper has four objectives: (1) to evaluate the existing concept of "intrinsic limitation," (2) to propose that wolf population dynamics may …
Epa's Research Program For Controlling Residential Wood Combustion Emissions, Robert E. Hall, Daryl G. Deangelis
Epa's Research Program For Controlling Residential Wood Combustion Emissions, Robert E. Hall, Daryl G. Deangelis
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
A recently completed study has shown that emissions of participate, carbon monoxide, and organics (including polycyclic organic matter) are relatively high from residential woodburning stoves and fireplaces when compared to emissions from residential gas- and oilfired furnaces. Since these emissions include a number of potentially hazardous compounds; the trend toward greater residential wood usage can have a negative impact on local ambient air quality. EPA is currently studying ways to operate existing stoves and design new stoves to minimize air pollutant emissions.

A Statistical Analysis Of The Quality Of Surface Water In Nebraska, R. A. Engberg
United States Geological Survey: Publications
This report provides descriptive statistics for 29 chemical or biological constituents for 109 stream sites in Nebraska sampled by the U.S. Geological Survey beginning in 1946. Also provided for each site are regression equations relating specific conductance to each of 12 chemical constituents and a regression equation relating specific conductance to stream discharge. The descriptive statistics are presented by river basins. Water leaving these basins that has the lowest mean specific conductance (266 umho/cm) is from the Niobrara River at Verdel, and water that has the highest (1,890 umho/cm) is from the South Platte River at Roscoe. Statewide, the principal …
