Optimal Foraging In A Uniform Habitat: The Search Mechanism Of The Green Lacewing, Alan B. Bond Jan 1980

Optimal Foraging In A Uniform Habitat: The Search Mechanism Of The Green Lacewing, Alan B. Bond

Alan Bond Publications

The effects of food deprivation and prey contact on the components of searching behavior in larval green lacewings (Chrysopa carnea Stephens) were examined to test the applicability of optimal foraging theory to predation in a uniform habitat. Variation in foraging intensity was primarily the result of changes in the meander. Modulation of the response to prey contact with increasing deprivation involved changes in the velocity and the response persistence and suggested the occurrence of adaptation to inferred differences in the spatial distribution of the prey. The ratio of giving-up times at different levels of deprivation was in accordance with …

G80-531 Swine Manure Management Systems, Elbert C. Dickey, Mike Brumm, David P. Shelton Jan 1980

G80-531 Swine Manure Management Systems, Elbert C. Dickey, Mike Brumm, David P. Shelton

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide examines the advantages and disadvantages of various types of swine manure management systems. Manure management is an integral part of any swine production system and must be carefully considered when planning new or remodeled facilities. Manure management objectives may include 1) optimum nutrient retention and utilization; 2) minimum land, labor or capital requirements; 3) odor control; 4) animal and/or human health and performance considerations; or 5) some combination of these objectives. Because of differences in land availability, climate, capital, labor and management skills among producers, a single, best management system for manure cannot be defined.

A Guide To Integrated Pest Management At Feedlots And Dairies, J. B. Campbell, C. D. Mcneal

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is rather new terminology used to describe the old art of keeping pest infestations below economic levels by utilizing a combination of control methodologies. This guide has been prepared to assist feedlot and dairy operators and consultants in an integrated approach to the management of pests. It is our purpose to outline a combination of sanitation, chemical methods and cultural control of stable flies, house flies and--to a much lesser extent--rats and starlings. The guide may also be useful to entomology and animal science students and county agents.

Stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.)

Effects Of Microbial Feed Additives On Performance Of Starter And Growing-Finishing Pigs, D. S. Pollmann, D. M. Danielson, E. R. Peo, Jr.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Three trials were conducted to evaluate the effect of lactic acid-producing microbial feed additives (Probiotics) on performance of starting and growing-finishing pigs. Two commercially available probiotics, Probios (L. acidopbilus) and Feed-Mate 68 (Streptococcus faecium type Cernelle 68), were used. In the first of two starter trials, 192 crossbred pigs (initial weight 7 kg) were used in a 2 • 4 factorial arrangement of treatments, with Probios and antibiotics (ASP-250, lincomycin, tylosin) as the main effects.

Profitability Index For Sires, J. J. Bakker, R. W. Everett, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1980

Profitability Index For Sires, J. J. Bakker, R. W. Everett, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A profitability index for evaluation of sires on predicted lifetime production of daughters and their progeny was developed from sire evaluations for milk yield, fat yield, and stayability. Indexes of milk and stayability for first lactations were used to calculate proofs for stayability in later lactations. Predicted milk yields were adjusted to the actual age when the records would be made. Breed averages, which are required for the procedure, were calculated from records of daughters of 1192 Holstein-Friesian sires in the Northeast Artificial Insemination Sire Comparison. Proofs for stayability through the first lactation and indexes for stayability in later lactations …

Missouri National Recreational River Management Plan Gavins Point Dam, South Dakota, To Ponca State Park, Nebraska Jan 1980

Missouri National Recreational River Management Plan Gavins Point Dam, South Dakota, To Ponca State Park, Nebraska

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The Missouri River begins at Three Forks, Montana, and flows southeasterly for 2,300 miles before joining the Mississippi River a few miles north of St. Louis, Missouri.  It ranks as the second longest and is one of the most famous rivers in the United States.  It was the primary route of Lewis and Clark.  The river shared with the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail the distinction of being one of the three main throughfares to the Far West.  It was a wild and unpredictable river that carried millions of pounds of freight.

Waters of this mighty river are …

Response Priming Effects In A Digit Naming Task As A Function Of Target-Noise Separation, John H. Flowers Jan 1980

Response Priming Effects In A Digit Naming Task As A Function Of Target-Noise Separation, John H. Flowers

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Oral naming latencies were measured for visually displayed digits that were flanked by either compatible (identical) or incompatible (different) noise digits. When target-noise spatial separation was "narrow" (1.1-deg visual angle), substantially longer latencies were observed for incompatible target-noise combinations than for compatible combinations, and this effect was greatest when the onset of the noise preceded the target by 150 msec. When target-noise spatial separation was increased to 3.3 deg, noise-compatibility effects were substantially attenuated when the noise preceded the target by 100 msec or less, but the effects reappeared with longer SOA values and reached a maximum when the noise …

1980 Beef Cattle Report, Leo E. Lucas

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Weighing steers three consecutive days at the beginning and end of the trial reduced variation and increased the probability of detecting a difference in daily gain and gain/protein ratios between treatments when compared to a standard weighing method (once at the beginning and once at the end of the trial). Regressing 1 initial, 1 final and 11 weekly weights also decreased variation and increased the probability of detecting treatment differences compared to the standard method, but was more variable than using three weights at the beginning and end of the trial.

Young, growing steers and lambs supplemented with natural protein …

Final Environmental Impact Statement Missouri National Recreational River Nebraska And South Dakota Jan 1980

Final Environmental Impact Statement Missouri National Recreational River Nebraska And South Dakota

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The Missouri River from Gavins Point Dam to Ponca State Park, Nebraska, is one of the few remaining relatively natural, braided reaches of the Missouri River. The Corps of Engineers and the Heritage, Conservation, and Recreation Service have investigated public concerns related to streambank erosion control and recreational development along this river reach. Two plans were initially considered and one was selected for detailed study. The selected plan consists of development of the river reach as a recreation river under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. This plan would meet all streambank erosion control and recreational development needs and would …
