A Technique For Physiologically Age-Grading Female Stable Flies, Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.), P. J. Scholl
A Technique For Physiologically Age-Grading Female Stable Flies, Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.), P. J. Scholl
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
A method of dissection followed by staining was initiated to allow physiological age- grading based on ovarian development in order to more completely describe the physiological development of adult female stable flies [Stomoxys calcitrans (L. )]. The gonotrophic developmental continuum from a non-differentiated cell in teneral females to mature eggs at the time of oviposition was first arbitrarily divided into six stages by using distinct landmarks within the developing oocyte . Then, nulliparous, uniparous, and biparous+ females were differentiated on the basis of the presence or absence of stained follicular relics in the ovariole sheaths. The combination of the …

Conservation And Variation Of Nucleotide Sequences In Escherichia Coli Strains Isolated From Nature, Lawrence G. Harshman, Monica Riley
Conservation And Variation Of Nucleotide Sequences In Escherichia Coli Strains Isolated From Nature, Lawrence G. Harshman, Monica Riley
Lawrence G. Harshman Publications
A group of Escherichia coli isolates from nature were compared with one another and with laboratory strains of E. coli with respect to size distribution of chromosomal restriction endonuclease fragments and differences in nucleotide sequences in selected small portions of the genomes. The estimated frequency of base substitutions in nucleotide sequences in and near the trp operons of 26 of the 28 E. coli strains examined ranged from 0.008 to 0.066. Nucleotide sequences in or near λ prophage homologs were significantly more variable than the sequences in or near trp, tnaA, and thyA genes. Thus, the λ-homologous regions …

Growth Of Enterobacter Cloacae In The Presence Of 25% Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, Vance C. Kramer, Diane M. Calabrese, Kenneth W. Nickerson
Papers in Microbiology
The growth of Enterobacter cloacae in 25% sodium dodecyl sulfate is described. The bacteria appeared to tolerate sodium dodecyl sulfate rather than metabolize it. The process was energy dependent, and cell lysis occurred during stationary phase. Extreme detergent resistance may be characteristic of the genus Enterobacter.

Epizootic Of Coccidiosis In Free-Flying Lesser Scaup, R. M. Windingstad, M. E. Mcdonald, L. N. Locke, S. M. Kerr, J. A. Sinn
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
A coccidiosis epizootic has occurred in lesser scaup (Aythsa affinis) at Bluestem Reservoir in eastern Nebraska during the spring in each of three recent years: 1976-1978. Losses peaked during the period from mid-March through April. As much as 29 % of the peak population of scaup using the reservoir died. Necropsies of 72 of the nearly 1390 scaup that died revealed destruction and sloughing of the intestinal mucosa and associated hemorrhaging. Fibrinonecrotic cores were frequently found in the intestinal lumens. Scrapings from the intestinal mucosal contained massive numbers of oocysts of the coccidian Eimeria aythyae. This is …

Morphology Of Leishmania Donovani Colonies Grown On Blood Agar Plates, Amy Doran Keppel, John J. Janovy Jr.
John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications
Previous studies have shown that several species of Trypanosomatidae can be grown as discrete and, in some cases clonal, colonies on blood agar plates, and that species differ in colony phenotype (Noeller, 1917, Arch. Schiffs Trop. Hyg. 21: 5-94; Senekjie, 1944, J. Parasitol. 30: 303-308; Newton, 1956, Nature 177: 279-280; Keppel and Janovy, 1977, J. Parasitol. 63: 879-882). None of these previous studies, however, has addressed the following question: Does the life cycle stage used to initiate agar plate culture affect colony phenotype? The question also can be phrased as follows: Does passage through a vertebrate host alter agar plate …

The Impact Of Moral Theories On Cheating: Studies Of Emotion Attribution And Schema Activation, Richard A. Dienstbier, Lynn R. Kahle, Keith A. Willis, Gilbert B. Tunnell
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This research series began as a test of an emotion-attribution approach to moral behavior. However, in the early studies, college students who read about morality were subsequently more likely to cheat on a vocabulary test than were control subjects who read materials irrelevant to morality. We hypothesized that resentment toward the test constructors interacted with the moral schemas activated by the reading task. To reduce resentment, in Study III the vocabulary test was presented as the experimenter's doctoral research. As predicted, compared to controls, those subjects who read about morality cheated less. Study IV was a quasi-experiment that confirmed the …

Epa Profile Of Environmental Quality Nebraska, Kathleen Q. Camin
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri, which make up EPA Region VII, are among the leading corn and wheat producing States in the Nation_ These States also produce a significant share of the soybean, grain sorghum, fat cattle, and finished hogs that are supplied to American and foreign markets.
Although the States in Region VII can best be characterized as rural, 65 percent of their nearly 12 million people live in urban areas. In Nebraska, metropolitan areas such as Omaha 4 have environmental problems resulting from major industrial operations, municipal services, transportation, and energy production. Metropolitan areas, however, do not have …

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education
Faculty development programs usually provide a variety of services for interested faculty. Much of what is provided is stressed as a service, available on a walk-in, voluntary basis, and tends to be focused on the university faculty as a whole. This approach requires the faculty to be initiators, asking them to avail themselves of the services available, and therefore supports active, self-motivated teachers. Centra's findings on faculty development practices underlined this when he identified "... teachers who wanted to get better" as the group "most involved, while those needed improvement were seen as least involved" (1976, p. 29).
Also, the …

Book Review: Dimensions In Urban History: Historical And Social Science Perspectives On Middle-Size American Cities By J. Rogers Hollingsworth And Ellen Jane Hollingsworth, Roger F. Riefler
College of Business: Faculty Publications
The urbanization-city development process in American history has been the focus of numerous scholarly investigations. Economic historians in particular, bringing the perspective and methods of economics to bear, have made significant contributions to this burgeoning literature. In Dimensions in Urban History the Hollingsworths propose a broader, more ambitious undertaking: the application of the wide panopoly of social science concepts and theory to understand better the historical process of urban development. As such this book lays claim to a wide potential readership.
The text is divided into a brief introduction and four chapters. The introduction and first chapter form the core …

Supralinearity Of Peak 5 And Peak 6 In Tld-700, Michael P. R. Waligórski, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
Track theory has been applied to an earlier suggestion, that the supralinearity of TLDs at high gamma-ray doses is due to pre-existing 1-hit and 2-hit trap structures, to calculate high-LET response. Measured 60Co dose responses for peaks 5 and 6 in LiF (TLD- 700) were decomposed to yield parameters characterizing each peak as a two-component c-hit mixture. One value of “trap radius” was assigned to each two-component representation, different for peak 5 and for peak 6, to calculate their responses for H, He, C, O, and Ne bombardments. Calculations reproduce experimental features of the heavy ion response of TLD-700, and …

The Section Of Mammals Of Carnegie Museum Of Natural History, Hugh H. Genoways, Duane A. Schlitter
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The Section of Mammals at Carnegie Museum of Natural History is responsible for the care of the collections of Recent mammals, and research on these collections. "Recent mammals?!" The capitalized word "Recent" refers to the geological time period since the last ice age (about 10,000 years ago) until the present time. Mammals are that group of animals characterized by the presence of hair at least during some time of their lives, warm blood, and the production of milk. Therefore, our work really involves living mammals with which everyone is familiar; however, our work also does include study of such recently …

Biology And Pathogenesis Of The Coccidium Eimeria Funduli Infecting Killifishes, Mobashir A. Solangi, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Epizootics of Eimeria funduli involved estuarine killifishes (Fundulus grandis, F. pulvereus, F. similis, and F. heteroclitus) in Mississippi, Alabama, and Virginia. All of more than 500 specimens examined of F. grandis from Mississippi during 1977 through 1979 had infections, regardless of age, sex, or season collected. Oocysts occurred primarily in the liver and pancreas, replacing up to 85% of both those organs. Infrequent sites of infection were fatty tissue of the body cavity, ovary, intestine, and caudal peduncle. Living fish did not discharge oocysts. Eimeria funduli is the first known eimerian to require a second host. To …
