G81-539 Assisting The Beef Cow At Calving Time, Gene H. Deutscher, Donald B. Hudson Jan 1981

G81-539 Assisting The Beef Cow At Calving Time, Gene H. Deutscher, Donald B. Hudson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This publication acquaints cattle producers with calving management principles to minimize calf loss. The objective is to deliver a live calf from every cow. Six to ten percent of all calves born in beef cow herds in the U.S. die at or soon after birth. Approximately half of those deaths are due to calving difficulty (dystocia). This multi-million dollar annual loss is second only to losses from cows failing to conceive. Calving difficulty has received much more attention in recent years, primarily because of the mating of larger European breeds of bulls to British breeds of cows. Increased calving problems …

Eli Lilly El-468, A New Bait Toxicant For Control Of The Red Imported Fire Ant, David F. Williams, Clifford S. Lofgren

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Eli Lilly EL-468, a phenylenediamine, possesses the delayed-toxicity necessary for a bait toxicant to control colonies of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. In laboratory tests it gave delayed action over more than a 10-fold range of concentrations; in field tests, baits formulated on pregel defatted corn grits and applied at 20 and 40 g AI/ha produced as high as 86 and 91% control.

Variances And Parcel Rezoning: Relief From Restrictive Zoning In Nebraska, Thomas Sattler Jan 1981

Variances And Parcel Rezoning: Relief From Restrictive Zoning In Nebraska, Thomas Sattler

Nebraska Law Review

Zoning ordinances restrict the use of property in order to achieve and promote the goals of a city or county in protecting the public health, safety and welfare. These ordinances include various use, density, bulk, and other restrictions. As contemporary society controls development in this manner, conflicts inevitably arise between private property interests and the broad societal goals reflected in zoning legislation. Zoning restrictions are of particular concern to landowners and those involved with the acquisition of real estate. If an acquiring entity meets the requisite standing requirements, like the private property owner it has judicial or administrative recourse in …

The Physical And Chemical Limnology Of Lake Mcconaughy With Reference To Fisheries Management, Melvin W. Taylor, Kit M. Hams

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Lake McConaughy is an important fishery resource of the state of Nebraska. The estimated fishing pressure in 1975 as determined from a postal creel census was 175,872 angler days (Morris 1977). This estimate is inflated compared to an on-site creel census conducted in 1977-78 which showed a total of 69,500 fishing trips annually (Madsen 1980). Not all fishermen were contacted so this estimate is undoubtedly too low. Regardless of which figure is accepted, the reservoir provides many man-days of fishing opportunity. Conservation and management of the fishery resource is necessary to maintain and/or improve its quality,

An important factor in …

Mobbing Calls Of The Phainopepla, Daniel W. Leger, Laura F. Carroll Jan 1981

Mobbing Calls Of The Phainopepla, Daniel W. Leger, Laura F. Carroll

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

When mobbing potential predators, male Phainopeplas (Phainopepla nitens) utter smoothly upswept vocalizations, unlike the harsh, staccato mobbing calls of other birds and mammals. A Phainopepla repeats this call as it approaches the bottom of its diving arc over the predator. We suggest that these calls do not serve to attract additional mobbers to the scene. Rather, they appear to emphasize the diving attacks directed toward the predator.

Ovicidal Activity Of Insecticides Against Planthoppers On Rice, E. A. Heinrichs, S. L. Valencia Jan 1981

Ovicidal Activity Of Insecticides Against Planthoppers On Rice, E. A. Heinrichs, S. L. Valencia

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Insecticides were evaluated to determine their ovicidal activity against rice-feeding planthoppers, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) and Sogatella furcifera Horvath. Carbofuran, methyl parathion, and triazophos were ovicidal as foliar sprays, and carbofuran, diazinon, metalkamate, and triazophos were ovicidal as paddy-water applications of granules in insectary studies. In a field study, only triazophos as a foliar spray provided significant ovicidal activity against N. lugens. Eggs of S. furcifera were more susceptible to insecticides than those of N. lugens. Ovicidal activity was dependent on age of egg at the time of insecticide application and on insecticide concentration.

Insecticides And Pheromones Used In The Midwest. A Short Review, Evelyn Osbourne, Paul Schwartz Jan 1981

Insecticides And Pheromones Used In The Midwest. A Short Review, Evelyn Osbourne, Paul Schwartz

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The Midwest produces most of the food and feed grains and oilseeds grown in the US. as well as a substantial proportion of a variety of other crops, but corn accounts for at least 75% of insecticide use in the region. The total amount of insecticides used on crops could be greatly reduced if economic losses from insects could be predicted accurately. We will examine the current status of chemical controls for insects of economic importance to this region, indicating some areas where new developments are needed or are likely to occur.

Selenium can be determined quantitatively in biological samples after digestion using nitric acid, orthophosphoric acid, and hydrogen peroxide and the formation of 5-nitropiazselenol. Samples are spiked with enriched 82Se and lsotoplc ratio of 80Se to 82Se is measured by combined gas chromatographymass spectrometry using dual ion monitoring. Precise determination at the parts-per-billion level is possible. The accuracy of the method Is verlfied by using standard reference materials.

Housing And Management To Reduce Climactic Impacts On Livestock, G. Leroy Hahn Jan 1981

Housing And Management To Reduce Climactic Impacts On Livestock, G. Leroy Hahn

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Weather is a constraint on efficient livestock production systems. Evaluation of the degree of constraint is a difficult, but necessary task before selection of appropriate modifications in management or environments can be made. The basis for rational selection from available alternatives for the limitation of climatic stress in livestock has continued to improve, particularly with the development of rudimentary functional relationships between animal performance and weather parameters. Such relationships, when combined with probabilistic knowledge of the weather parameters, permit prediction of the reduction in animal performance under natural conditions, or of the benefits to be derived from proposed housing or …

Sister Chromatid Exchanges In A Male With A Y/Y Translocation, Merlin G. Butler Jan 1981

Sister Chromatid Exchanges In A Male With A Y/Y Translocation, Merlin G. Butler

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Sister chromatid exhanges (SCE) are considered indicators of genetic damage and early chromosome changes. The SCE frequency from an infertile 27-year-old, white male with tall stature and a non-dicentric Y/Y translocation consisting of one short arm and two long arms of the Y chromosome was determined. The SCE frequency was 7.9 ± SD 1.4 while to SCE frequency from ten control subjects was 8.4 ± SD 0.51. A two-tailed t-test was applied to the SCE data and no significant difference was found between the individual with the Y/Y translocation and control subjects. Apparently, this altered chromosomes does not interfere …

Unionization has become an increasingly significant force among professional groups. This study was conducted to determine the attitudes of dental school administrators regarding faculty unionization and their perceptions concerning dental faculties' attitudes toward it. The data reported concern information about the administrators and demographic information concerning their institutions along with attitudinal information regarding faculty unionization. The attitudinal data reported concerned the administrators' opinions regarding: (1) expectancies for future unionization, (2) faculty strikes, (3) unionization's effect on governance, (4) perceptions of the type of faculty expected to favor unionization, (5) perceptions of the factors influencing faculty to prefer unionization, and (6) …

Spatial Memory And The Performance Of Rats And Pigeons In The Radial-Arm Maze, Alan B. Bond, Robert G. Cook, Marvin R. Lamb Jan 1981

Spatial Memory And The Performance Of Rats And Pigeons In The Radial-Arm Maze, Alan B. Bond, Robert G. Cook, Marvin R. Lamb

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

The resource-distribution hypothesis states that the ability of an animal to remember the spatial location of past events is related to the typical distribution of food resources for the species. It appears to predict that Norway rats would perform better than domestic pigeons in tasks requiring spatial event memory. Pigeons, tested in an eight-arm radial maze, exhibited no more than half of the memory capacity observed in rats in the same apparatus and may not have used spatial memory at all. The results were interpreted as supporting the hypothesis.

Intercellular Communication In Plants: Evidence For A Rapidly Generated, Bidirectionally Transmitted Wound Signal, Eric Davies, Anne Schuster Jan 1981

Intercellular Communication In Plants: Evidence For A Rapidly Generated, Bidirectionally Transmitted Wound Signal, Eric Davies, Anne Schuster

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Wounding (whether by excision, abrasion, or puncture) elicited rapid, massive, and enduring formation of polysomes in aged pea stems and other mature tissues. The response depended on temperature and severity of wounding but not on water uptake, and it occurred in tissues adjacent to, distant from, above, and below the site of injury. The kinetics of polysome formation were similar in tissues adjacent to or up to 150 mm distant from the point of injury. The wound-induced increases in proteinsynthesizing capacity of the polysomes both in vivo and in vitro were much greater than the increases in rRNA and poly(A) …

Analysis Of A Controlling-Element Mutation At The Adh Locus Of Maize, John Osterman, Drew Schwartz Jan 1981

Analysis Of A Controlling-Element Mutation At The Adh Locus Of Maize, John Osterman, Drew Schwartz

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A Ds-suppressed Adh mutant was isolated by the allyl alcohol pollen selection

technique. The mutant produces a reduced level of an altered thermolabile

enzyme suggesting that the Ds element is inserted in the Adh structural gene.

The mutant protein is enzymatically active and does not differ detectably in

size from the progenitor protein. A number of possible explanations for the data

are presented.

Evaluation Of Fly Ash Leachabillty Using Batch Leaching Procedures, W. A. Sack, B. A. Boomer, J. T. Tarantino, G. B. Keefer, R. K. Seals, M. Miller Jan 1981

Evaluation Of Fly Ash Leachabillty Using Batch Leaching Procedures, W. A. Sack, B. A. Boomer, J. T. Tarantino, G. B. Keefer, R. K. Seals, M. Miller

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

The leachabillty of two fly ashes was evaluated using two different proposed procedures Environmental Protection Agency-Extraction Procedure (EPA-EP) and American Society for Testing and Materials method (ASTM). The EP test was also run to study the influence of contact time and the presence of dissolved oxygen. Finally, a modified EP was carried out with repeated extraction of the same ash with fresh leachate and repeated contact of the same Ieachate with fresh ash. Both acid and deionized water extractions were used.

The EP test was found to extract more material than the ASTM procedure on a milligrams per kilogram of …

Allergenicity Of Various Peanut Products As Determined By Rast Inhibition, Julie A. Nordlee, Steve L. Taylor, R. T. Jones, John W. Yunginger Jan 1981

Allergenicity Of Various Peanut Products As Determined By Rast Inhibition, Julie A. Nordlee, Steve L. Taylor, R. T. Jones, John W. Yunginger

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Extracts of 19 different peanut products and peanut oil were tested for their allergenicity by the radioallergosorbent test inhibition assay using a crude peanut extract from raw peanuts as the standard for comparison. Seventeen of the extracts were able to competitively inhibit the binding of serum IgE from peanut-sensitive patients with the solid-phase raw peanut extract. Peanut oil and the extract from hydrolyzed peanut protein did not inhibit binding, which suggests that these products are not allergenic. The peanut hull flour extract showed a slight ability to inhibit binding, suggesting that this product contains minor amounts of the peanut allergen.

Parasites And Diseases Of Mullets (Mugilidae), I. Paperna, Robin M. Overstreet Jan 1981

Parasites And Diseases Of Mullets (Mugilidae), I. Paperna, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The following treatment of parasites, diseases and conditions affecting mullet hopefully serves several functions. It acquaints someone involved in rearing mullets with problems he can face and topics he should investigate. We cannot go into extensive illustrative detail on every species or group, but do provide a listing of most parasites reported or known from mullet and some pertinent general information on them. Because of these enumerations, the paper should also act as a review for anyone interested in mullet parasites or the use of such parasites as indicators about a mullet's diet and migratory behavior. Unfortunately, limited space prohibits …

The morphology of late fourth and early fifth stages of Ascaris suum in swine was studied with light and scanning electron microscopy. Late fourth-stage larvae have dome-shaped lips, that are broadest at the base and incompletely separated laterally. The lips bear coarse, triangular dentides, irregularly spaced on the internomedial and internolateral walls. Large double papillae are located on the middle of the external lip surface. The cervical region gradually increases in width posteriorly. The late fourth-stage cuticle is marked by a coarse transverse striation and bears incomplete longitudinal ridges, creating a brickwork pattern; longitudinal alae are present. Late fourth and …

Nebraska Law Review

In Sindell v. Abbott Laboratories, the California Supreme Court discussed intra-industry liability for adverse effects of drugs and adopted the market share liability theory for DES injuries. Although the majority purported to shift only the burden of proving causation from the plaintiff to the defendants, the effect of its adopting the intra-industry joint liability concept (or, more specifically, the market share doctrine) is to guarantee that the plaintiff will prevail on the causation issue. By departing from traditional tort doctrine and effectively eliminating causation as an issue, "'[m]arket share' liability thus represents a new high water mark in tort …

Resegregation Processes In Desegregated Schools And Status Relationships For Hispanic Students, Helen A. Moore, Peter Iadicola Jan 1981

Resegregation Processes In Desegregated Schools And Status Relationships For Hispanic Students, Helen A. Moore, Peter Iadicola

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The resegregation of students in desegregated elementary schools generates potential barriers to social integration and academic achievement.  WE are interested in the role of greater status inequality in reducing academic achievement for minority students.  We generate multiple measures of internal schooling processes such as ability grouping, high stakes testing, and unequal burdens of busing across racial ethnic groups at ten desegregated elementary schools in California selected as case studies from a larger sample of 182 schools.  Hispanic student enrollments ranged from 10 percent to 53 percent of each campus and we assess variations in resegregation practices and student and campus …
