Purification And Characterization Of A Shigella Dysenteriae 1- Like Toxin Produced By Escherichia Coli, Alison D. O'Brien, Gerald D. Laveck
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
A toxin from an enteropathogenic strain of Escherichia coli (E. coli H30) was purified to apparent homogeneity from cell lysates. The steps used to isolate the E. coli H30 toxin included French pressure-cell disruption of bacteria grown in iron-depleted media, Affi-Gel Blue chromatography, chromatofocusing, and anti- Shiga toxin affinity chromatography. The mobilities of the subunits of radioiodinated E. coli H30 toxin and Shiga toxin observed after the two toxins were subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were identical. In the absence of 2-mercaptoethanol, a narrow band was seen at Mr 31,500 (±1,000), and a wide heavy band …
1983 Annual Report
Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
1983 was another interesting year for the staff of our unit, our clientele and for those of us involved in administration.
On the agricultural front, the fall and winter of 1982 and the spring of 1983 were very wet; while July, August, and September were very, very hot and dry.
The PIK (Payment In Kind) added a dimension of uncertainty, but did have a positive effect on prices. Over 50% of the cropland was retired in some of the counties in southeast Nebraska.
Unfavorable economic conditions strained the financial stability of many farmers and businesses in our district. Unemployment climbed …

The Passalidae Of The United States, Jack C. Schuster
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
Only 1 species of Passalidae is known to occur naturally in the U.S.: Odontotaenius disjunctus (Ill.) from the eastern deciduous forest. Previously unreported records of Passalus punctiger Lepeletier and Serville and P. punctatostriatus (Percheron) from Ar- izona (1908-9) are given, but no evidence of present U.S. populations of these species is known. P. punctatostriatus represents a new U.S. record. P. punctiger had been previously cited from Texas, but that record is doubtful. Mexican species near the U.S. border are noted. A key is given to larvae and adults of possible U.S. species.

Cranes Of The World: 2. Individualistic And Social Behavior, Paul A. Johnsgard
Cranes Of The World: 2. Individualistic And Social Behavior, Paul A. Johnsgard
Cranes of the World by Paul A. Johnsgard
Like all higher organisms, cranes perform a variety of behavior patterns throughout their lives that have evolved to fulfill diverse functions. Much of their time is spent in self-directed activities necessary to maintain life and health. These individualistic or "egocentric" activities include such fundamental behaviors as breathing, eating, defecation, drinking, and sleeping or resting. Other activities, while not vital to life, are usually performed during "leisure time"; these include preening, shaking, stretching, oiling, and other actions that fall within a general umbrella of "comfort" activities. Still other activities, such as foraging and the seeking of shelter, result in aggregations of …

G83-674 Hazardous Waste Management Requirements For Pesticide Applicators (Revised November 1987), Edward F. Vitzthum, Roger E. Gold, Emery W. Nelson, Larry D. Schulze
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide is to inform Nebraska pesticide applicators about selected provisions of federal and state hazardous waste laws and regulations.
Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) because of widespread indiscriminate disposal of hazardous chemicals. Under provisions of that law, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established national standards for proper management of hazardous wastes. "Management," as EPA uses the term, includes generating, transporting, storing, treating and disposing of hazardous waste.

G83-651 Nebraska's Solar Heated Modified-Open-Front Swine Nursery, Michael F. Kocher, Gerald R. Bodman, C.J. Kisling-Crouch
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the design features of this unique swine nursery, including ventilation, heating and energy conservation factors, and manure handling systems.
A warm environment is essential for young pigs. High fuel costs and the practice of heating entire buildings brought about the design and testing of solar heated nurseries on several farms.

United States Public Health Resources
The composition of phosphate metabolites and the intracellular pH in erythrocytes from a patient with hereditary pyrimidine-5'-nucleotidase deficiency were examined using 31P NMR spectroscopy. Several resonances were identified in spectra from intact cells and from extracts. The 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate line intensities were normal but the NTP resonances were about twice normal due to the presence of millimolar quantities of pyrimidine phosphates. Several intense resonances were also observed in the diphosphodiester region of the spectrum. One compound contributing to these lines has been identified as cytidine diphosphocholine. The resonances of NTPs were in a position indicating that the additional triphosphates were …
Diplomatic Racism Canadian Government And Black Migration From Oklahoma, 1905-1912, R. Bruce Shepard
Diplomatic Racism Canadian Government And Black Migration From Oklahoma, 1905-1912, R. Bruce Shepard
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
From the turn of the century until World War I, hundreds of thousands of American farmers migrated to western Canada. Not all of them were welcomed. Between 1905 and 1912, more than one thousand black men, women, and children joined the trek. They came mainly from Oklahoma, and they settled in Saskatchewan and Alberta. While their numbers were small in comparison to the total American migration, the appearance of these black settlers aroused bitter race prejudice among western Canadians, many of whom demanded that the Canadian government stop more blacks from coming. How the government went about this task is …

When I reflect on the state of our association after five years of existence I am pleased at what I see. We have been forced by circumstances to mature early-ours was a baptism by fire and I think we have succeeded. The hopes expressed at our organizational meeting in St. Louis in 1978 and the goals set by the first councils have been realized in a short period of time. Our membership has grown steadily and increasing numbers of people have attended our annual meetings to exchange information and ideas and to participate in the program. The editing guide called …

G83-638 Strawberry Pests, Timothy P. Miller, David L. Keith
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the more common pests of strawberries in Nebraska, their damage, and recommended control procedures.
Several pests attack strawberries and cause varying types and degrees of injury. Damaging infestations of strawberry pests do not occur in Nebraska in most years. However, control measures are occasionally required to maintain quality, yield, and health of the strawberry bed.

Space heaters or portable heaters--no matter what they are called--must be used correctly to avoid personal injury. Anyone using these heating devices should know about their wide range of safety problems.
Credentialism As Monopoly, Class War, And Socialization Scheme: Some Historical Reflections On Modern Ways Of Determining Who Can Do A Job, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Social theorists in earlier periods have looked at credentialing from the perspective of its service to the economic or social system as opposed to its “protection of the public interest.” Adam Smith regarded the long education and the performance tests that the guilds required as monopolistic constraints on production; Karl Marx saw the same guild system as controlled by the propertied classes and uselessly exclusionary; and Emile Durkheim, unlike both Smith and Marx, regarded the occupational group with its entrance requirements as central to the stability of modern society. The application of the principles of Smith, Marx, and Durkheim, in …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide provides cleaning, sanitizing, mechanical, environmental and other procedures to follow to assure a low bacterial count in milk. Bacteria are tiny, rapidly reproducing microorganisms that are too small to be seen without a high power microscope. Their very tiny size makes it very difficult to eliminate them from dairy equipment. Because bacterial growth in milk may cause spoilage and possibly human illnesses, a low bacterial count is one of the best indicators of top quality milk. Milk will almost always be of top quality if properly harvested from healthy, clean cows with clean equipment, cooled quickly and kept …
Manioc And Fish: A "Methiononian" Compromise In Amazonia?, Tom Langdon
Manioc And Fish: A "Methiononian" Compromise In Amazonia?, Tom Langdon
Nebraska Anthropologist
Protein as a limiting factor in Amazonian diet has met with considerable discussion and argument (e.g., Beckerman 1979; Chagnon and Hames 1979; Johnson 1982; Gross 1975, 1982; Spath 1978, 1981; Werner et al. 1979). The intent of this paper is to continue the discussion of protein as a limiting factor in Amazonia with respect to two dietary staples, manioc and fish. More specifically, does bitter manioc become a factor in determining aquatic resource utilization in Amazonia?
