Infection with Shinga toxin- and Shinga-like toxin -producing strains of Shigella dysenteriae and Escherichia coli, respectively, can progress to the hemolytic-uremic syndrome. It has been hypothesized that circulating Shinga toxin, Shinga-like toxins, and endotoxins may contribute to the disease by directly damaging glomerular endothelial cells. The effects of these toxins on HeLa, Vero, and human vascular endothelial cells (EC) were examined. Confluent EC were sensitive to Shinga toxin but were at least 106-fold less sensitive to the toxins than were Vero cells. Shinga toxin was the predominant cytotoxic factor. Lipopolysaccharides were not cytotoxic and did not augment …

The quality factor (QF) as defined in International Commission on Radiological Protection report no. 26 (ICRP 26, ref. 1) or in International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements report no. 40 (ICRU 40, ref. 2) is not expected to be a valid method for assessing the biological risk for deep space missions where the high-energy heavy ion (HZE) particles of the galactic cosmic rays (GCR) are of major concern. No human data for cancer induction from the HZE particles exist, and information on biological effectiveness is expected to be taken from experiments with animals and cultured cells (ref. 3). G91-1060 Black Spot Of Roses, John E. Watkins
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Black spot, Nebraska's most troublesome rose disease, can be controlled through selection of a resistant cultivar, spaced plantings, and an active fungicide spray program.
Roses are one of the most versatile and inspiring ornamentals for landscaping. There are roses adapted for any garden site and landscape purpose. Roses are not always easy to grow and may require a little more management than other ornamentals. One of the greatest challenges to successfully growing garden roses is disease control.

5. Use Of Computer Technology In Behavioral Assessments, Thomas R. Kratochwill, Elizabeth J. Doll, W. Patrick Dickson
The Computer and the Decision-Making Process
Major developments in the behavioral assessment field have occurred over the past decade (e.g., Barlow, 1981 ; Ciminero, Calhoun, & Adams , 1986; Haynes & Wilson, 1979; Mash & Terdal, 1988a). The use of computer technology by behavioral assessors has occurred, but this is a relatively recent development (Kratochwill, Doll, & Dickson, 1986; Romanczyk, 1986). Consider, for example, that behavioral assessment texts include little discussion of computer applications and many articles restrict discussion of behavioral assessment to observational measures (see Cone & Hawkins, 1977, for an exception). In psychology and education, issues of journals have been devoted to computer applications …

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process
The use of computers to interpret psychological tests is a "hot" topic, both within psychology and without. It is hot in the sense of giving rise to an increasing number of books and articles (e.g., Butcher, 1985, 1987; Eyde, 1987; Krug, 1987). It is hot in the sense of giving rise to an ever-increasing number of business enterprises (compare any recent APA Monitor with an issue from 1981). It is hot in the sense of capturing the attention of the news media (e.g., Petterson, 1983). And it is hot in the sense of giving rise to increasing controversy within psychology …

Priming By “Predictive” Context Stimuli In Visual Classification, John H. Flowers, Dorie Reed, Thomas D. Green
Priming By “Predictive” Context Stimuli In Visual Classification, John H. Flowers, Dorie Reed, Thomas D. Green
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Subjects participated in visual character- and word-classification-tasks-for-which-spatially contiguous context stimuli were exposed 100 or 1,000 msec prior to target onset. These context stimuli were physically identical to the target on 75% of the trials. Substantial facilitation of RT occurred for “valid” trials at both SOA levels. When the target differed from the context stimuli, evidence for priming the response category, as well as the semantic category of the target (letters vs. digits; metal names vs. furniture names), was obtained at the 100-msec SOA, but these effects were attenuated with the 1,000-msec SOA. With a full second to process a stimulus-predictive …
What To Look For And Why When Buying A Telecommunications Switch
What To Look For And Why When Buying A Telecommunications Switch
ACUTA: Other Publications
There are three characteristics of institutions of higher education that have a strong
impact on telecommunications:
. Campus Environment
. Multiple Service Populations
. Limited Budgets
Each characteristic translates into requirements for an effective telecommunication
system.
To Serve the Campus Environment
A campus is usually the first image associated with the word "college" or "university." Typically, institutions of higher education are housed in several buildings which may be fairly close together, or spread over some distance, perhaps reaching across a city or even a state.
To serve the campus user, a system must provide feature transparency, regardless of location. Small …

4. The Validity Of Computerbased Test Interpretations Of The Mmpi, Lorraine D. Eyde, Dennis M. Kowal, Francis J. Fishburne Jr.
The Computer and the Decision-Making Process
With advances in computer technology, computer-based test interpretations (CBTI), first developed in the early 1960s (Fowler, 1985), have proliferated (Eyde & Kowal, 1987). CBTIs have been developed and marketed for a variety of tests used in clinical, counseling, educational, and employment settings. The largest number of commercial CBTI systems are available for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI; Krug, 1987), the most widely used inventory of its kind in the world, which has a continuously growing literature of more than 8,000 books and articles (Holden, 1986; Lanyon, 1984).
According to Harris:
CBTI refers to the automation of a set of …

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process
A decade ago a scholar writing in a legal journal asked the question, "Can/Should Computers Replace Judges?" (D'Amato, 1977). The article explored problems involved in developing computer systems capable of making the difficult assessments and judgments required in judicial decision making. In discussing these problems, the author quoted extensively from Joseph Weizenbaum, who in a well-known critique of computerized psychotherapy, sagely asserted, "Since we do not now have any ways of making computers wise, we ought not now to give computers tasks that demand wisdom" (Weizenbaum, 1976). Nevertheless, the legal scholar concluded that any humanistic misgivings about computerized decision making …

13.2.8. Rescue And Rehabilitation Of Oiled Birds, Sallie Welte, Lynne Frink
Waterfowl Management Handbook
Oil contamination of waterfowl and seabirds has been documented as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in birds for more than 50 years. Each year more than one million birds may die from oil contamination in North Atlantic waters alone; worldwide mortality is unknown.
Of special concern is that many of the seabirds commonly affected are not prolific breeders, and assessment of each species’ status is handicapped by the difficulty of accurately monitoring trends in marine bird populations.
Oiled bird rehabilitation is an intensive, crisis-oriented response, requiring an experienced management agency, specialized medical expertise, stockpiles of specially designed equipment, …

Ivermectin Inhibits Molting Of Wuchereria Bancrofti Third Stage Larvae In Vitro, J. Kevin Baird, Wiwiek Riberu, Sofyan Masbar, U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit #2, Jakarta Detachment, Apo San Francisco
United States Public Health Resources
The effect of ivermectin or diethylcarbamazine (DEC) on Wuchereria bancrofti molting from the third to the fourth larval stage (L3 to L4) was evaluated in vitro. L3 larvae were harvested from laboratoryreared Aedes togoi 2 wk after feeding upon a microfilaremic human volunteer. The larvae were kept in an artificialm edium (Franke's NI medium) with 10% human serum under an atmosphere of 5% CO2 for 20 days. Experimental tubes also contained ivermectin (0.1-1,000 ng/ml) or DEC (0.1-10,000 ng/ml). An estimated concentration of 50 ng/ml ivermectin inhibited molting in 50% of the larvae expected to molt. …

Molecular Epidemiologic Techniques In Analysis Of Epidemic And Endemic Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1 Strains, Nancy A. Strockbine, Julie Parsonnet, Katherine Greene, Julia A. Kiehlbauch, I. Kaye Wachsmuth
United States Public Health Resources
During 1988 the number of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 infections reported in the United States increased fivefold. To determine if recent isolates from Mexico were related to those that caused epidemics of dysentery worldwide, Southern hybridization analysis was done with Shiga toxin and ribosomal RNA gene probes. Western hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere strains differed by the size of a single EcoRI fragment carrying the Shiga toxin genes. Three ribosomal DNA (rDNA) patterns were observed, which correlated with the strain;s continental origin for 81 of 83 isolates tested. Together the Shiga toxin and rDNA probe results indicated that recent Mexican …

The Use Of Health Service Areas For Measuring Provider Availability, Diane M. Makuc, Bengt Haglund, Deborah D. Ingram, Joel C. Kleinman, Jacob J. Feldman
United States Public Health Resources
Measurement of the availability of health care providers in a geographic area is a useful component in assessing access to health care. One of the problems associated with the county provider-to-population ratio as a measure of availability is that patients frequently travel outside their counties of residence for health care, especially those residing in non-metropolitan counties. Thus, in measuring the number of providers per capita, it is important that the geographic unit of analysis be a health service area. We have defined health care service areas for the coterminous United States, based on 1988 Medicare data on travel patterns between …

Marius Clore, Ad Bax, Daniel S. Garrett, Stephen J. Stahl, Paul T. Wingfield, Angela M. Gronenborn
Robert Powers Publications
The solution structure of the ribonuclease H domain of HIV-l reverse transcriptase has been investigated by three-dimensional double and triple resonance heteronuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The domain studied has 138 residues and comprises residues 427 to 560 of the 66 kDa reverse transcriptase with an additional four residues at the N terminus. Initial studies on the wild-type protein were hindered by severe differential line broadening, presumably due to conformational averaging. Mutation of the single tryptophan residue located in a loop at position 113 (position 535 in the reverse transcriptase sequence) to an alanine resulted in much improved spectral properties with …

The Nineteenth George Eliot Memorial Lecture- 1990, Roemary Ashton
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
In July 1990 I finished writing a biography of G.H. Lewes, which will be published by Oxford University Press in September 1991. There could be no better subject to have than Lewes (1817-1878). He is, of course, best remembered as the faithful companion, the husband in fact if not in law, of Marian Evans, the man without whose energy and support she might not have found the courage to become George Eliot. If he had nothing more than this to recommend him, he would still be worthy of our attention. But Lewes has a great deal more than this to …

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Ann Robson had just passed her 32nd birthday when she died a few days before Christmas 1990. She was born in South Shields in October 1958. She learned to play the piano and was particularly fond of the Christmas carol' Away in a Manager'. The singing of this carol at her memorial service at the end of December was, therefore, particularly poignant. She had a passion for horses, as did so many girls of her generation, and this interest remained with her into her adult life. She was educated at Doncaster Grammar School and in 1977 went to Durham University …

When Gladys Leffler Gist remarked in her reminiscences that she and her husband Ray had witnessed "considerable 'for better and for worse'" during their forty years together, she could just as well have been describing the "marriage" between farmers and the agricultural economy during the same period. Depression and drought, of course, challenged those people making their livings from the land and in many ways dominated their impressions of those years. Of more long-term importance, however, were the "vast and fundamental changes" that, according to Gilbert Fite, stemmed from the "application of new technology, chemistry, and plant and animal sciences" …

Margery Jacoby was a child of twelve when she moved with her sister and their aunt from Wisconsin to the Montana frontier in 1883. Three years later, with the encouragement of the county superintendent of schools, she attempted the county exam that was necessary for a teaching job. With a first-class certificate (good for three years) in hand, she began teaching, in large part to supplement her family's income. She taught for the next seven years at several rural schools near Fort Benton and Great Falls.

Review Of The Two Psychiatries: The Transformation Of Psychiatric Work In Saskatchewan, 1905-1984, Will Spaulding
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The Great Plains region has a history of producing innovations in mental health. This book, an historical account and sociological analysis of the evolution of the Saskatchewan public mental health system, describes one Great Plains phenomenon that at times during this century has been remarkably progressive. The book began as the author's dissertation in the sociology of health care and was made possible by his fortuitous access to confidential government archives, primarily in the form of interoffice correspondence, in addition to the public historical record. Dickenson evaluates several hypotheses generated by sociologies of labor and professions. The brief and succinct …
