Section I: Faculty Development: Past, Present, Future

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

If the faculty development enterprise is to maintain its health and vigor through this decade and into the next century, its practitioners and caretakers must not only address present needs, but also prepare for the future-in part by studying the past. Tunnel vision and near-sightedness spell doom to a field whose success depends so heavily upon its ability to quickly and effectively meet the changing needs of the professoriate. Thus, as faculty development professionals we are called upon not only to serve as counselors and facilitators, but also as historians and visionaries. We must study our brief, but rich, history …

Wrongful Pregnancy Actions: Should Courts Allow Recovery For Childrearing Expenses?—Burke V. Rivo, 406 Mass. 764, 551 N.E.2d 1 (1990), Michael C. Pallesen Jan 1991

Wrongful Pregnancy Actions: Should Courts Allow Recovery For Childrearing Expenses?—Burke V. Rivo, 406 Mass. 764, 551 N.E.2d 1 (1990), Michael C. Pallesen

Nebraska Law Review

"Wrongful pregnancy" actions are a type of medical malpractice involving a physician's negligent performance of a sterilization procedure. The majority of courts addressing wrongful pregnancy claims have held that the plaintiffs have a valid cause of action and have awarded traditional tort remedies of general and special damages relating to actual medical services incident to the birth and delivery—but not the costs of raising the child. Controversy in recent cases has been over awarding childrearing costs. Several courts have departed from the majority and awarded these damages; Burke v. Rivo is the latest. The Burke court held that in addition …

Genotype By Environment Interaction For Holstein Milk Yield In Colombia, Mexico, And Puerto Rico, T. L. Stanton, R. W. Blake, R. L. Quaas, L. Dale Van Vleck, M. J. Carabano Jan 1991

Genotype By Environment Interaction For Holstein Milk Yield In Colombia, Mexico, And Puerto Rico, T. L. Stanton, R. W. Blake, R. L. Quaas, L. Dale Van Vleck, M. J. Carabano

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Components of (co)variance and genetic parameters were estimated by REML procedures from first lactation mature equivalent Holstein milk records from 54,604 Colombian, Mexican, and Puerto Rican cows and 198,079 US cows. The objective was to determine the cause of heterogeneous daughter response to sire selection for milk yield between the regions. Data from Latin America were partitioned by country and by herd-year SD class for milk to obtain five joint analyses between the US and Latin America, low herd-year SD, high herd year SD, Colombia, and Mexico. Sire and residual variances for milk were 41 and 29% smaller in Latin …

1. Computer-Assisted Personal Ity Test Interpretation: The Dawn Of Discovery, Douglas N. Jackson

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

My aim in this chapter is to outline some of the substantive and psychometric bases on which we can build a science of assessment that takes advantage of the enormous potential inherent in the digital computer and in artificial intelligence. Some of these foundations are within the traditions of classical assessment. But others represent urgently needed areas of explication and research.

It is my view, in the tradition of Cronbach (1954), that developers of computer software for testing should listen to what psychometricians say, and, as well, psychometricians should be sensitive to new research ideas waiting to be solved that …

7. Implementation Decisions In Designing Computer-Based Instructional Testing Programs, John V. Noonan, Paul D. Sarvela Jan 1991

7. Implementation Decisions In Designing Computer-Based Instructional Testing Programs, John V. Noonan, Paul D. Sarvela

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

From preschool to graduate school, computer-based instruction (CBI) has become an increasingly common event in today's education and training community. The interactive characteristics of CBI and its ability to simulate advanced concepts and operations, such as patient management simulations for medical students (Whiteside & Whiteside, 1987/88) or the maneuvering of a jet airplane (Conkright, 1982), make CBI an attractive new instructional delivery system for educators working in many different fields .

Because of these qualities , the computer has tremendous potential in educational and psychological measurement. For example, Millman & Arter (1984) describe how the computer aids in maintaining test-item …

G91-1036 Environmental Stresses And Tree Health, Jon S. Wilson, Mark O. Harrell Jan 1991

G91-1036 Environmental Stresses And Tree Health, Jon S. Wilson, Mark O. Harrell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide is intended to help tree owners identify tree health problems caused by environmental factors, and ways to prevent or reduce damage.

Environmental stresses cause many health problems of Nebraska trees. Hot and cold temperatures, drying winds, poor soil and root conditions and man's activities can cause direct damage to leaves, bark and roots, and can predispose trees to secondary insect and disease attack. Maintaining a tree in good condition through proper maintenance can prevent many environmentally related health problems.

G91-1049 Controlling Internal Parasites In Swine, B.E. Straw Jan 1991

G91-1049 Controlling Internal Parasites In Swine, B.E. Straw

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This publication addresses the identification, prevention and control of internal parasites in swine and lists characteristics of principle dewormers.

Whether pigs are raised in confinement or on pasture, controlling internal parasites is essential to the overall herd health program. Recent studies by Tom Kennedy of A.E.F. Research, Inc, Waunakee, WI, have shown that worm infestation is prevalent on both a farm and individual pig basis. Of the farms examined, 91 percent raised pigs on concrete, wire or slotted floors, but more than 90 percent of all farms were infested with one or more kinds of worms.

G91-1045 Turfgrass Weed Prevention And Management (Revised December 1994), Roch E. Gaussoin, Alex Martin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses control strategies and recommendations for weed control in turf.

Weeds are a major problem in lawns and normally are the most visible of turfgrass pests. Weeds affect the function, health and appearance of the turf as they compete with desirable turfgrass plants for space, light, water and nutrients.

Nf91-49 Well Water, Nitrates And The "Blue Baby" Syndrome Methemoglobinemia, Ann Ziebarth

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Unit infants reach about six months of age their digestive system has a diminished capability to secrete gastric acid, thus the pH level can rise. At this pH level bacteria proliferates increasing the transformation of nitrate to nitrates. Thus, exposure to nitrate at levels in excess of 10 ppm can result in higher risk of methemoglobinemia. Methemoglobinemia, also known as blue baby syndrome, is characterized by a reduced ability of the blood to carry oxygen. This NebFact discusses the signs and symptoms, case histories and the treatment and prevention of the syndrome.

G91-1026 Sunflower Production In Nebraska, James A. Schild, David D. Baltensperger, Drew J. Lyon, Gary L. Hein, Eric D. Kerr

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Seeds, seedbed preparations, fertilizing and controlling weeds in sunflowers are among the topics covered here. Sunflowers are native to Nebraska. Cultivated for centuries by native American Indians as a food crop, sunflowers were taken to Europe in the mid-16th century. Oilseed sunflowers have been a U.S. crop since 1986. Sunflower production is divided into two market classes, oil and confectionery. The oil type is by far the most commonly grown market class. Recent health trends have brought sunflower cooking oil into prominence because the oil is low in saturated fats. Confectionery types are grown for the edible roasted sunflower seed …

G91-1041 Feeding The Bovine Somatotropin (Bst) Treated Dairy Cow, Rick J. Grant, Jeffrey F. Keown

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Proper feeding management of dairy cows treated with bovine somatotropin is emphasized.

When dairy producers decide to use bovine somatotropin (BST) in their herds, proper nutritional management is critical to its success.

The final decision to use BST is likely an economic one: will the use of BST in a producer's operation generate a positive cash flow?

Detection Of Mercuric Ions In Water By Elisa With A Mercury- Specific Antibody, Dwane E. Wylie, Larry D. Carlson, Randy Carlson, Fred W. Wagner, Sheldon M. Schuster Jan 1991

Detection Of Mercuric Ions In Water By Elisa With A Mercury- Specific Antibody, Dwane E. Wylie, Larry D. Carlson, Randy Carlson, Fred W. Wagner, Sheldon M. Schuster

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

An immunoassay that detects mercuric ions in water at concentrations of 0.5 ppb and above is described. The assay utilizes a monoclonal antibody that binds specifically to mercuric ions immobilized in wells of microtiter plates. Within the range of 0.5-10 ppb mercury, the absorbance in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is linear to the log of the mercuric ion concentration. The quantitation of mercury by ELISA correlates closely with results from cold-vapor atomic absorption. Other divalent metal cations do not interfere with the assay, although there is interference in the presence of 1 mM chloride ions. The optimum pH for …
