This effort by Riebsame, Changnon, and Karl is a well-written, well organized examination of the 1987-89 drought from both a scientific and sociological perspective. Through their investigation of society's and government's handling of this drought event, the authors make a strong case that "despite a decade of growing interest in the social and economic impacts of climate fluctuations ... the nation remains ill-prepared to cope with unusual climate conditions."

In the first chapter, Riebsame et al. briefly present how past droughts have impacted the U.S. and how society/government has typically managed (or mismanaged) those past drought events. They also present …

Withholding Payment On Otoe-Missouria Reservation Lands, Daniel W. Overton Aug 1992

Withholding Payment On Otoe-Missouria Reservation Lands, Daniel W. Overton

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In 1883 the U.S. General Land Office conducted the sale of the eastern remnant of the Big Blue reservation in Nebraska and Kansas for the benefit of its owners, the Otoe-Missouria Indians. The property sold for an average of $12.22 an acre. It was the highest per-acre price ever offered for Indian lands on the Central and Northern Great Plains. Before the first year of white settlement had come to an end, however, many landholders began to petition federal authorities for payment-time extensions and, eventually, debt reductions. They argued that they had been "forced" to pay more for their lands …

Career Differentiation: The Legal Community In Lincoln, Nebraska 1880-1891, Andrew Koszewski Aug 1992

Career Differentiation: The Legal Community In Lincoln, Nebraska 1880-1891, Andrew Koszewski

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The development of a legal community in late nineteenth-century Lincoln, Nebraska, offers an opportunity to examine career differentiation. Relying upon census and Lincoln city directories, the data analysis reveals similar patterns to previous research on the legal profession and some significant differences. Lincoln attorneys usually came from middle or lower classes backgrounds, seldom graduated from college, relocated to Nebraska from midwestern states, practiced alone, joined numerous fraternal organizations, became involved in politics, and were overwhelmingly Republicans.

Parasiticidal Effect Of Chemotherapy In Alveolar Hydatid Disease: Review Of Experience With Mebendazole And Albendazole In Alaskan Eskimos, J. F. Wilson, Robert L. Rausch, B. J. Mcmahon, P. M. Schantz Aug 1992

Parasiticidal Effect Of Chemotherapy In Alveolar Hydatid Disease: Review Of Experience With Mebendazole And Albendazole In Alaskan Eskimos, J. F. Wilson, Robert L. Rausch, B. J. Mcmahon, P. M. Schantz

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Evidence that the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis in humans is killed by chemotherapy is presented in a review of our 17-year experience with treatment of alveolar hydatid disease in Alaska. The efficacy of chemotherapy was assessed with use of an in vivo assay of parasite viability by means of inoculation of voles, immunohistochemical tests, and histopathologic findings. Of 14 tests performed for nine patients, 12 in vivo assays (86%) were negative after chemotherapy, while only two (17%) of 12 vole tests for seven untreated patients were negative. Regression or arrest of growth of metastatic and primary hepatic lesions, together …

Temporal And Spatial Dietary Variability In The Prehistoric Lower And Middle Osmore Drainage: The Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Evidence, Karin L. Sandness Aug 1992

Temporal And Spatial Dietary Variability In The Prehistoric Lower And Middle Osmore Drainage: The Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Evidence, Karin L. Sandness

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Skeletal material from six sites representing human occupation in the Osmore drainage of southern Peru, circa A.D. 50 to 1400, was analyzed for carbon and nitrogen isotopes. The δ13C and δ15N values observed in the study indicate-spatial and temporal variability in diet. Specimens from the lower valley are, in general, more positive in both carbon and nitrogen than those of the middle valley, with the most positive values being present in specimens from the coastal Chiribaya site, San Geronimo. The data suggest, however, that all populations in the drainage experienced shifts in diet through time. Samples …

Three-Dimensional Solution Structure Of Human Interleukin-4 By Multidimensional Heteronuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Robert Powers, Daniel S. Garrett, Carl J. March, Eric A. Frieden, Angela M. Gronenborn, G. Marius Clore Jun 1992

Three-Dimensional Solution Structure Of Human Interleukin-4 By Multidimensional Heteronuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Robert Powers, Daniel S. Garrett, Carl J. March, Eric A. Frieden, Angela M. Gronenborn, G. Marius Clore

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The three-dimensional solution structure of recombinant human interleukin-4, a protein of 133 residues and 15.4 kilodaltons that plays a key role in the immune and inflammatory systems, has been solved by multidimensional heteronuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The structure is dominated by a left-handed four-helix bundle with an unusual topology comprising two overhand connections. The linker elements between the helices are formed by either long loops, small helical turns, or short strands. The overall topology is remarkably similar to that of growth hormone and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor, despite the absence of any sequence homology, and substantial differences in the relative …

What John Dewey Taught Me, Harriet Furst Simon Jun 1992

What John Dewey Taught Me, Harriet Furst Simon

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

John Dewey, because of his longevity and productivity, has spawned a cottage industry. Seldom has one man kept so many women respectably employed for so long (we are not prejudiced; we have had a male co-worker now and again). Of course, his editors are not the only ones who have been busy; an increasing number of scholars are churning out books and articles on topics ranging from Dewey and the May Fourth Movement in China to the important women in Dewey's life.

As I thought about the subject of appreciation, it seemed to me that Dewey has educated us in …

Book Review: Genetically Engineered Organisms: Benefits And Risks, Anne K. Vidaver Jun 1992

Book Review: Genetically Engineered Organisms: Benefits And Risks, Anne K. Vidaver

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

In the continuing debate on the introduction into the environment of genetically modified organisms, particularly those modified by recombinant DNA, there are few books suitably written for policymakers, the lay public and scientists in other fields. This book describes the current state of the science and art of genetic engineering, potential uses (particularly outside the laboratory), and the benefits that can be expected. It is particularly pertinent for examining potential risk and management of risk from the perspective of the United Kingdom.

John Dewey: The Editor's Appreciation, Jo Ann Boydston Jun 1992

John Dewey: The Editor's Appreciation, Jo Ann Boydston

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

When John Dewey was born in 1859, there were in this country some men, and a few women, who were philosophers, teachers of philosophy, and students of philosophy, but these people could not teach or study American philosophy because there was no body of thought that could be called "American philosophy." Half a century later, we did have an identifiable "American" philosophy and much that is distinctive about it we owe to John Dewey. In fact, by 1920, when Dewey was sixty-one years old, Morris Raphael Cohen was able to say, "John Dewey is unquestionably the one preeminent figure in …

Dual Regulation Of Silent And Productive Infection In Monocytes By Distinct Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Determinants, Howard Gendelman, Peter Westervelt, Timothy Henkel, David B. Trowbridge, Jan Orenstein, John Heuser, Lee Ratner Jun 1992

Dual Regulation Of Silent And Productive Infection In Monocytes By Distinct Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Determinants, Howard Gendelman, Peter Westervelt, Timothy Henkel, David B. Trowbridge, Jan Orenstein, John Heuser, Lee Ratner

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The regulation of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection and replication in primary monocytes was investigated by mutagenesis of recombinant proviral clones containing an env determinant required for the infectivity of monocytes. Virus replication was assayed by determination of reverse transcriptase activity in culture fluids and by recovery of virus from monocytes following cocultivation with uninfected peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Three virus replication phenotypes were observed in monocytes: productive infection, silent infection, and no infection. Incorporation of the monocytetropic env determinant in a full-length clone incapable of infection or replication in primary monocytes (no infection) conferred the capacity for highly …

Biological Collections At The University Of California, Davis: Scope, Status, And Needs, Scott Lyell Gardner, Lynn S. Kimsey, Marilyn S. Warburton, Patrick E. Mcguire Jun 1992

Biological Collections At The University Of California, Davis: Scope, Status, And Needs, Scott Lyell Gardner, Lynn S. Kimsey, Marilyn S. Warburton, Patrick E. Mcguire

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The rich heritage of agricultural and biological research and teaching on the Davis campus of the University of California is reflected in its vast holdings of scientific collections of living and nonliving preserved biological materials. More recently, as the campus expanded, important collections were developed to support research and educational programs in human and veterinary medicine, anthropology, and geology. A task force reviewed the results of campus-wide surveys and its findings are reported here. Recommendations for future activities are put forth.

Avoidant Personality Disorder And The Generalized Subtype Of Social Phobia, Craig S. Holt, Richard G. Heimberg, Debra A. Hope May 1992

Avoidant Personality Disorder And The Generalized Subtype Of Social Phobia, Craig S. Holt, Richard G. Heimberg, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Social phobia and avoidant personality disorder (APD) may be given as comorbid diagnoses. However, it is not known if the labels provide independent, useful diagnostic information. We classified social phobics by social phobia subtype and presence of APD. Generalized social phobics with and without APD (ns = 10 and 10) and nongeneralized social phobics without APD (n = 10) were distinguished on measures of phobic severity. The generalized groups also showed earlier age at onset and higher scores on measures of depression, fear of negative evaluation, and social anxiety and avoidance than did the nongeneralized group. APD …
