Papers in Biotechnology
Transgenic pigs were generated that produced human protein C in their milk at up to 1 g/liter. The gene construct was a fusion gene consisting of the cDNA for human protein C inserted into the first exon of the mouse whey acidic protein gene. These results demonstrate that the mouse whey acidic protein gene contains regulatory elements that can direct cDNA expression at high levels in the pig mammary gland. Recombinant human protein C that was produced at about 380 pg/ml per hr in transgenic pig milk possessed anticoagulant activity that was equivalent to that of protein C derived from …
Mutual Impacts Of Toughening On Crises And Losses, Richard A. Dienstbier
Mutual Impacts Of Toughening On Crises And Losses, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
It is usually expected that if we are overwhelmed by an episode of crisis or loss that we may temporarily cope ineffectively, whereas when weare exposed to a sequence of challenges and stressors that are managable, we learn gradually to become better able to cope with such events. The "toughness" concept relates to analogous processes at the physiological level. The concept is based upon a wide variety of research with both animals and humans that is reviewed in detail elsewhere (Dienslbier, 1989). The focus of this chapter will instead be upon how toughness influences both physiological and psychological responses to …
Simon Sulzer And The Consequences Of The 1563 Strasbourg Consensus In Switzerland, Amy Nelson Burnett
Simon Sulzer And The Consequences Of The 1563 Strasbourg Consensus In Switzerland, Amy Nelson Burnett
Department of History: Faculty Publications
From 1561 to 1563 the Strasbourg church was wracked by a bitter controversy between Johann Marbach, leader of the city's clergy, and Girolamo Zanchi, professor at the Strasbourg Academy. The controversy was finally resolved in March 1563, when the two parties signed a consensus on the disputed issues of predestination, the perseverance of the saints, and the Lord's Supper. Modern historians of doctrine generally discuss the Strasbourg controversy and the 1563 Consensus in the context of the struggle of later sixteenth-century Lutheranism to define orthodoxy, and they stress that the disagreement focused not on the sacrament of the altar but …

His And Hers: Male And Female Anatomy In Anatomy Texts For U.S. Medical Students, 1890–1989, Susan C. Lawrence, Kae Bendixen
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Much recent work on gender has emphasized how ideas of male and female differences underlie cultural assumptions about appropriate social relations, behavior, institutions and knowledge. This study focuses on the specific ways that anatomy texts for medical students in the United States have presented male and female anatomy between 1890 and 1989, using both numerical data and analysis of textual examples from 31 texts. Despite public debates about gender representation, anatomy texts have generally remained consistent in how “the” human body has been depicted in this century. In illustrations, vocabulary and syntax, these texts primarily depict male anatomy as the …

Localization Of Cis-Acting Sequences In The Latency-Related Promoter Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Which Are Regulated By Neuronal Cell Type Factors And Immediate Early Genes, A. C. Bratanich, Clinton J. Jones
Localization Of Cis-Acting Sequences In The Latency-Related Promoter Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Which Are Regulated By Neuronal Cell Type Factors And Immediate Early Genes, A. C. Bratanich, Clinton J. Jones
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) establishes a latent infection in sensory ganglionic neurons of cattle. During a latent infection, a single latency-related (LR) transcript is expressed. This observation suggested that DNA sequences in the LR promoter are positively regulated by neural cell type factors. The regulation of the LR gene was examined in neural cells as well as nonneural cells in transient assays. A 258-bp XbaI-SphI fragment from the LR promoter cis activated the herpes simplex virus type 1 thymidine kinase promoter in rat pheochromocytoma (PC-12) cells and differentiated human (HCNIA) neurons. In contrast, cis activation was not …

Critical Comment: Designation And Curatorial Management Of Type Host Specimens (Symbiotypes) For New Parasite Species, Jennifer K. Frey, Terry L. Yates, Donald Duszynski, William L. Gannon, Scott Lyell Gardner
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The accurate identification of a host organism is an important component in the taxonomic recognition of a new species of parasite. Correct identification, curatorial management, and safekeeping of the host specimen from which a parasite type specimen is collected is also desirable. We recommend that the host from which the type of a new parasite species is described should be designated as a symbiotype.

Preparation Of School Psychologists In Behavioral Consultation Service Delivery, Thomas R. Kratochwill, Pamela Carrington Rotto, Susan M. Sheridan, Diane Salmon
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Practicing school psychologists have reported that consultation generally has been a high priority in service delivery approaches in schools and other applied settings (e.g., Gutkin, Singer, & Brown, 1980; Lesiak & Lounsbury, 1977; Meacham & Peckam, 1978). Although many practitioners now receive didactic training, few school psychology programs may actually provide a field practicum or other supervised experience in consultation. Formal applied training in consultation is important for several professional and ethical reasons. In the last decade, there has been growing concern over the limitations of traditional psychoeducational services provided to children in school settings. For example, studies have demonstrated …
Enhancing Biodiversity With And Within Agroforestry Plantings, Michele M. Schoeneberger
Enhancing Biodiversity With And Within Agroforestry Plantings, Michele M. Schoeneberger
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Agroforestry is the deliberate introduction of multipurpose woody perennials (MWPs) into agroecosystems for the purpose of enhancing agricultural productivity, natural resource conservation, and human environments. This introduction promotes the biodiversity within the agroecosystem and thus its sustainability. This biodiversity is only a fraction of its potential due to the limited number and arrangement of the MWPs currently used in agroforestry plantings. An expanded effort in nursery and agroforestry research and development along with nursery production of diverse, adapted MWPs will need to be pursued to fully capitalize on the varied economic and ecological benefits of agroforestry.
One-Trial Backward Excitatory Fear Conditioning Transfers Across Contexts, Rick A. Bevins, John J. B. Ayres
One-Trial Backward Excitatory Fear Conditioning Transfers Across Contexts, Rick A. Bevins, John J. B. Ayres
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
One path to human phobia may be one-trial backward fear conditioning. Human phobias transfer readily across contexts. However, animal studies of one-trial backward fear conditioning have yet to demonstrate such transfer. The present study sought to do so. It used a lick-suppression procedure with 84 naive male albino rats. Two conditioning contexts, designated O and V, were crossed factorially with two test contexts, O and V. Within each cell of the factorial design, rats received in the conditioning context either a single 12 sec tone backward paired with a single 4 sec 1 mA shock or the same tone explicitly …

Rice Insects: The Role Of Host Plant Resistance In Integrated Management Systems, E. A. Heinrichs
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Insects are among the most important abiotic and biotic constraints to rice production. National rice research programs are in various stages in the development and implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) stratagies for rice insect control. Among the various control tactics, insect resistant cultivars are sought as the major tactic in rice IPM. Through the activities of interdisciplinary teams of scientists significant progress has been made in the development and release of insect resistant cultivars to farmers. Because of its compatibility with other control tactics insect resistance has proven to fit well into the IPM approach to rice insect control …

A Conceptual Model For The Expansion Of Behavioral Consultation Training, Susan M. Sheridan, Diane Salmon, Thomas R. Kratochwill, Pamela J. Carrington Rotto
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
In this article, a general model and specific program that expand traditional behavioral consultation training are presented. The training program involves five interrelated components: (a) procedural and content skills, (b) role and relationship considerations, (c) entry/systems issues, (d) field-based experience, and (e) peer supervision. As a system, each component is necessary but not sufficient in the development of consulting expertise. Likewise, each component is subsumed by one or more components that encompass this broader framework. A theoretical rationale, model for implementation, and future training and research directions are also presented.
Penance Or Pedophilia: Mark Twain And The Aquarium: Review Of Mark Twain's Aquarium: The Samuel Clemens Angelfish Correspondence, 1905-1910. Edited By John Cooley., J. Kent Calder
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
This world comes to life in this useful new volume edited by John Cooley, a professor of English at Western Michigan University. Cooley learned of the Aquarium Club through letters in the possession of his second cousin, Marjorie Breckenridge, an M.A., and his ensuing fascination led him to the Mark Twain Papers at the University of California, Berkeley, and to other significant Twain collections around the country in such repositories as New York Public Library, Columbia University Library, Huntington Library, and Yale University Library. The resulting compilation of approximately three hundred entries represents "nearly every known written communication between Samuel …

Sibling Confl Ict In Early Adolescence, Marcela Raffaelli
Sibling Confl Ict In Early Adolescence, Marcela Raffaelli
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This study examined sibling conflict and relationship qualities in early adolescence. One hundred four 10- to 15-year-olds (mean age 11.7 years) completed questionnaires assessing the quality of their relationship with their closest sibling, and were interviewed about a recent, specific conflict with that sibling. Analysis suggests that sibling conflict fulfills several functions in early adolescence, including reinforcing family and relationship rules and delineating interpersonal boundaries. Few differences attributable to age or gender constellation of the sibling dyad emerged, and rivalry did not appear to be a primary impetus to conflict during this age period. Instead, sibling conflict appears to create …

Identification And Characterization Of The Bovine Immunodeficiency-Like Virus Tat Gene, Zhen-Qian Liu, Deborah Sheridan, Charles Wood
Identification And Characterization Of The Bovine Immunodeficiency-Like Virus Tat Gene, Zhen-Qian Liu, Deborah Sheridan, Charles Wood
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
A cDNA clone of the bovine immunodeficiency-like virus (BW) trans-activator gene (tat) was identified and characterized. The tat cDNA clone was generated by splicing, and on the basis of sequence analysis, the Tat protein was found to be encoded entirely by the first exon. It is 103 amino acids in size and shares sequence homology with the human immunodeficiency virus (HW) Tat. The BIV tat clone can trans activate the BIV promoter effectively, as measured by the expression of the bacterial chloramphenicol acetyltransferase gene, when transfected into bovine cells. Besides activating the BIV promoter, the BIV Tat can also trans …
