A Generalized Machine Learning-Based Classifier Considering Cost-Effective Features For Automated Fault Detection And Diagnosis (Afdd) Of Packaged Rooftop Units, Md Rasel Uddin

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Packaged rooftop units (RTUs) are widely used for space conditioning in commercial buildings and manufacturing facilities. The typical soft faults related to RTUs degrade the system's performance in terms of cooling capacity, power consumption, and Coefficient of Performance (COP), detrimentally affecting both the equipment and energy consumption and the environment. Previous research in soft fault detection for rooftop units lacked classifier validation using lab and field data, developing a generalizable algorithm, and analyzing its performance across varying fault intensities.

Using a simulated data library for multiple rooftop units, this study proposes a machine-learning classifier with a reduced set of 9 …

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Cosegmentation and coattention are extensions of traditional segmentation methods aimed at detecting a common object (or objects) in a group of images. Current cosegmentation and coattention methods are ineffective for objects, such as plants, that change their morphological state while being captured in different modalities and views. The Object State Change using Coattention-Cosegmentation (OSC-CO2) is an end-to-end unsupervised deep-learning framework that enhances traditional segmentation techniques, processing, analyzing, selecting, and combining suitable segmentation results that may contain most of our target object’s pixels, and then displaying a final segmented image. The framework leverages coattention-based convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Introduction—Approximately 1% of the world’s population is impacted by epilepsy, a chronic neurological disorder characterized by seizures. One-third of epileptic patients are resistant to AEDs, or have medically refractory epilepsy (MRE). One non-invasive treatment that exists for MRE includes the ketogenic diet, a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. Despite the KD’s success in seizure attenuation, it has a few risks and its mechanisms remain poorly understood. The KD has been shown to improve metabolism and mitochondrial function in epileptic phenotypes. Potassium channels have implications in epileptic conditions as they have dual roles as metabolic sensors and control neuronal excitation.

Objectives—The …

Diesel Tractor Fuel Efficiency And Exhaust Emissions Standards, Jerin Tekolste, Cory Walters, Michael Mccullough, Lynn Hamilton, Lia Nogueira, Roger M. Hoy

Cornhusker Economics

Diesel engine performance and costs represent crucial factors for agricultural producers while pollutants from the exhaust are largely a social concern but also important to producers. Beginning in 1970, Congress authorized the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate emissions with amendments in subsequent years (U.S. EPA, 2023). In 1996 the EPA issued strict Exhaust Emission Standards for Nonroad Compression-Ignition Engines, causing a major paradigm shift in acceptable emission levels. A primary concern coming from many manufacturers was the difficulty of designing an engine to meet these standards without compromising the engines’ power output and efficient fuel consumption (Lloyd and Cackette 2001; …

Re‑Using Food Resources From Failed Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.) Colonies And Their Impact On Colony Queen Rearing Capacity, Rogan Tokach, Autumn H. Smart, Judy Wu-Smart

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

For over a decade, beekeepers have experienced high losses of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies due to a variety of stressors including pesticide exposure. Some of these chemical stressors may residually remain in the colony comb and food resources (pollen and nectar) of failed colonies and be later re-used by beekeepers when splitting and building back new colonies. The practice of re-using comb from previously perished colonies (termed “deadout”) is common in beekeeping practice, but its role in affecting colony health is not well understood. Here, we evaluate the impact of reused, pesticide-contaminated “deadout” combs on colony function …

The process of follicle maturation leading to ovulation is a key milestone in female fertility. It is known that circulating lipids and cytokines play a role in the follicle’s ability to go through follicular maturation and the ovulatory processes. However, the specific mechanisms are not well understood. We posit that dysregulation of granulosa cells influences the ovarian environment, which tries to adapt by changing released lipids and cytokines to achieve follicular maturation. Eleven non-lactating adult females underwent estrus synchronization with two injections of PGF2 14 days apart. Daily blood samples were collected for 28 days to monitor steroid hormone production …

For arsenic decontamination from groundwater, arsenic crystallization is becoming adopted due to its sustainability and economic benefits. However, arsenic crystallization technology is a two-step process, which makes it complex and generates hazardous waste. Successful efforts toward making it a single-step process are presented here. The addition of nanorods and ball-milled zinc sulfide nanoparticles to arsenic-contaminated water result in highly monodispersed and higharsenic- containing mineralized nanowaste with a crystalline structure similar to the mineral Tooeleite ((Fe3+6(As3+O3)4SO4(OH)4•4H2O)). This study reports the results of a short-term stability test …
