Analysis Of Pattern Structure By Geometric Symmetries, Dorothy K. Washburn Jan 1988

Analysis Of Pattern Structure By Geometric Symmetries, Dorothy K. Washburn

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

INTRODUCTION

While a large literature exists on the technologies different peoples use to manufacture woven fabrics (cf. Emery 1966), little attention has been given to developing equally systematic ways to study the patterns produced. This paper outlines one approach to pattern analysis which utilizes mathematical symmetries to describe the way design parts are arranged in a pattern. The advantages of this method are discussed and examples of a number of problems that such an analysis of pattern structure can address are described.

SYMMETRY ANALYSIS:

Symmetry analysis is a mathematically based description of the structure of a pattern. It specifies the …

Rural-Urban Linkages: An Assessment Of State Government Revenue And Expenditure Patterns, Jerome A. Deichert Jan 1988

Rural-Urban Linkages: An Assessment Of State Government Revenue And Expenditure Patterns, Jerome A. Deichert

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

Taxing and spending decisions made by Nebraska's policy makers have different impacts on Nebraska's metropolitan and nonmetropolitan counties, even though these impacts may be unintended. Furthermore, Nebraska's counties are linked through the operation of state government. Through their fiscal actions policy makers can strengthen these links or cause them to deteriorate. Policy makers should begin to incorporate the geographic dimensions of their decisions into their decision making processes, especially as they are faced with issues concerning property tax relief and rural development. A data set describing the geographic distribution of Nebraska state government taxes and expenditures is offered here for …

Silas Marner: George Eliot And Mme Le Prince De Beaumont, Terence Dawson Jan 1988

Silas Marner: George Eliot And Mme Le Prince De Beaumont, Terence Dawson

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

At the beginning of chapter 15 of Silas Marner (1861), there is a reference to a well-known fairy tale. The paragraph is as follows:

That famous ring that pricked its owner when he forgot duty and followed desire - - I wonder if it pricked very hard when he set out on the chase, or whether it pricked but lightly then, and only pierced to the quick when the chase had long been ended, and hope, folding her wings, looked backward and became regret? (Penguin ed., p. 191)

Joseph Wiesenfarth has identified the fairy tale as 'Prince Darling.' He quotes …

Rethinking The Farm Revolt Of The 1930s, William C. Pratt Jan 1988

Rethinking The Farm Revolt Of The 1930s, William C. Pratt

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

T he northern Plains witnessed the last great farm revolt in its history during the 1930s, when a flood of protest spilled across the region, fed by the springs of hard times and earlier insurgencies. The countryside, for one last moment, forced itself upon the rest of the country and demanded attention for its plight. After a period of high visibility, these efforts receded in the wake of New Deal programs that seemingly undercut the rural revolt. Many of the protesters arrived at an accommodation with the new regime, accepting "half-aloaf now" in terms of wheat allotment checks and refinanced …

The Heart Of The Prairie: Culture Areas In The Central And Northern Great Plains, James R. Shortridge Jan 1988

The Heart Of The Prairie: Culture Areas In The Central And Northern Great Plains, James R. Shortridge

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Although the words Great Plains imply a physical region, they have been increasingly used to describe a distinctive set of cultural traits and values. The tone was set in 1931 when Walter Prescott Webb argued that attitudes and land uses brought to the Plains from humid lands would fail. Aridity, he said, was the central fact of existence in this place; it demanded a new approach to life. 1

On The Nature And Antiquity Of The Manix Lake Industry, Douglas Bamforth, Ronald Dorn Jan 1988

On The Nature And Antiquity Of The Manix Lake Industry, Douglas Bamforth, Ronald Dorn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

The antiquity of human occupation in the New World undoubtedly is one of the major unresolved culture-historical problems in North American prehistory. On the one hand, a dominant position with a long history in American archaeology (cf. Wilmsen 1965) holds that human beings arrived in the New World at the close of the Pleistocene, no longer than 12,000 years ago, and that Clovis sites represent the oldest occupation in the Americas (Haynes 1970; Martin 1973; Waters 1985). On the other hand, a less widely accepted school of thought sees a variety of evidence for human occupation in the Americas well …

Roscoe Pound And The Seminarium Botanicum At The University Of Nebraska, 1888-1889, Michael R. Hill Jan 1988

Roscoe Pound And The Seminarium Botanicum At The University Of Nebraska, 1888-1889, Michael R. Hill

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Roscoe Pound (1870-1964) became one of America's leading legal scholars, but few recall his rigorous training in botany. Those who do most often cite his 1898 joint doctoral thesis (The Phytogeography of Nebraska, co-authored with Frederic Clements), but fail to note his first graduate work of a decade earlier. Roscoe Pound's master's thesis, "The Imperfect Fungi of Nebraska," was researched and written during the 1888-1889 academic year. Although the thesis itself is now lost, its content and the circumstances under which it was written can be established by using archival materials. Pound's role in leading the student …

Systematics And Population Ecology Of Late Pleistocene Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Of Natural Trap Cave, Wyoming, Xiaoming Wang Jan 1988

Systematics And Population Ecology Of Late Pleistocene Bighorn Sheep (Ovis Canadensis) Of Natural Trap Cave, Wyoming, Xiaoming Wang

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Large numbers of Late Pleistocene bighorn sheep (total counts of identifiable elements: 4,497) Ovis canadensis. are described from the Natural Trap Cave, northern Wyoming. The specimens consist of nearly-intact skulls and enough post-cranial materials to assemble several complete sheep skeletons. Most of the fossils yield radiocarbon dates from 12,000 to 21,000 BP, while the oldest are more than 110,000 years old as dated by the fission-track method on the volcanic ash. The specimens resemble modern bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in having shallow lachrymal fossae and relatively wide rostra. in contrast to the Asian argali (Ovis ammon …

Paleontological Results From Ocean Drilling Program Leg 101, David K. Watkins, Eric Fourcade, R. Mark Leckie, Allan J. Melillo, Amanda A. Palmer, Joost W. Verbeek, Jacques Butterlin, Renée Damotte, Claude Guernet, Edwige Masure, Michael J. Moran Jan 1988

Paleontological Results From Ocean Drilling Program Leg 101, David K. Watkins, Eric Fourcade, R. Mark Leckie, Allan J. Melillo, Amanda A. Palmer, Joost W. Verbeek, Jacques Butterlin, Renée Damotte, Claude Guernet, Edwige Masure, Michael J. Moran

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Leg 101 of the Ocean Drilling Program recovered Albian through Holocene sediments from a variety of carbonate depositional environments. Data from four microplanktonic groups (calcareous nannofossils, planktonic foraminifers, radiolarians, and dinoflagellates) and four benthic groups (larger foraminifers, smaller benthic foraminifers, ostracodes, and sponge spicules) yield a biostratigraphic and paleoecologic framework for these varied sediments. Winnowed, skeletal-planktonic foraminiferal packstones and grainstones from the central Straits of Florida (Site 626) reflect a late Oligocene to Holocene history of sporadic sedimentation greatly influenced by strong bottom-current activity. Neogene to Quaternary sediments from two carbonate-slope transects (Sites 627 to 633) indicate significant slope accretion …

Characteristics Of Buddhist Pilgrimages In Sri Lanka, Robert Stoddard Jan 1988

Characteristics Of Buddhist Pilgrimages In Sri Lanka, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

Although pilgrimages have been studied by geographers for many decades, we still are uncertain about the universality of certain basic geographic characteristics of this religious activity. It is true that NOLAN (1983; 1984; forthcoming) has provided a wealth of data on Christian pilgrimages, especially in Western Europe, and several geographers have analyzed aspects of the hajj. But, there have been relatively few studies about groups in many other settings, such as the Muslems in the Philippines, the Christians in India, and the Hindus in Africa. We need to expand our collective knowledge about pilgrimages by studying them in a wide …

The Onset Of Spring Melt In First-Year Ice Regions Of The Arctic As Determined From Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer Data For 1979 And 1980, Mark R. Anderson Nov 1987

The Onset Of Spring Melt In First-Year Ice Regions Of The Arctic As Determined From Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer Data For 1979 And 1980, Mark R. Anderson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Sea ice ablation is an important physical process affecting the global climate system. During the Arctic melt season, rapid changes occur in both sea ice surface conditions and the extent of ice. These changes alter the albedo and vary the surface energy budget. Understanding variations in Arctic sea ice is critical for global climate studies. This paper investigates the spring onset of melt in the Arctic seasonal sea ice zone through analysis of melt signatures derived from Nimbus 7 scanning multichannel microwave radiometer data. Satellite-derived melt signatures, determined by 18- and 37-GHz vertical brightness temperatures, are associated with the initial …

Germans In Brazil: A Comparative History Of Cultural Conflict During World War I, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1987

Germans In Brazil: A Comparative History Of Cultural Conflict During World War I, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

The first three chapters establish the historical context for understanding what happened to the Germans in Brazil during the period of the war in Europe and its immediate aftermath, 1914 to 1920. The large pattern of German settlement in Brazil, offered in Chapter I, is followed by a study of German ethnic institutions--churches, schools, societies--and the German-language press to reveal literacy levels, religious and linguistic characteristics, and the measure of assimilation (or lack thereof) into Brazilian society. Ethnic group relations, perceptions, and images, along with attendant concerns and fears, are analyzed next to show how and why the Brazilian majority …

The Nebraska Legislature: Policy Implications Of Its Organization And Operation, Robert Sittig Jan 1987

The Nebraska Legislature: Policy Implications Of Its Organization And Operation, Robert Sittig

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

The adoption of a nonpartisan unicameral legislature by Nebraska voters in 1934 increased the opportunity for distinctive policymaking in the state. This reform moved Nebraska to the forefront on many measures of legislative capability, such as structural simplicity, open deliberative process, and level of staff assistance. Yet, the Unicameral lags behind other states on other measures of legislative effectiveness and modernization. This is illustrated by inadequate compensation for legislators, insufficient winnowing if bills prior to floor consideration, and modest restraint of interest group activity. The uniqueness of the Unicameral continues to bring Nebraska attention. Although its organization and operation receive …

Fort Peck- A Half-Century And Holding, Steven G. West, Mike Shea, Kevin R. Quinn, Ernie Pyle, C. C. Lull, Nancy A. Johnson

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

Fifty years ago, thousands gathered on the Fort Peck Dam to witness its closure-a major milestone along the road leading to completion of the largest hydraulic fill dam in the world.

That moment was the symbolic beginning of the great legacy known as the Pick-Sloan Plan, which includes the six mainstem dams on the Missouri River.

Many of those who were party to this great undertaking will join with us in this Golden Anniversary year to reflect on the opportunities provided for employment during the Depression, and as the ~ginning of successful careers that led them across the country.

These …

The Expeditions Of John Charles Fremont, John L. Allen Jan 1987

The Expeditions Of John Charles Fremont, John L. Allen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

With the publication of this third volume in the Expeditions of John Charles Fremont series, a massive compilation and editing task begun in 1965 has come to an end. The first volume and accompanying map portfolio, published in 1970, dealt with Fremont's travels between 1838 and 1844, focusing on the first and second expeditions into the American West which secured his fame as an explorer. The second, published in 1973, was devoted to Fremont's third expedition, his participation in the Bear Flag Revolt and subsequent court martial. Finally, the present work covers Fremont's travels between 1848 and 1854, encompassing the …

From Wasteland To Utopia: Changing Images Of The Canadian In The Nineteeth Century, R. Douglas Francis Jan 1987

From Wasteland To Utopia: Changing Images Of The Canadian In The Nineteeth Century, R. Douglas Francis

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

It is common knowledge that what one perceives is greatly conditioned by what one wants or expects to see. Perception is not an objective act that occurs independently of the observer. One is an active agent in the process and brings to one's awareness certain preconceived values, or a priori assumptions, that enable one to organize the deluge of objects, experiences, and impressions into some meaningful and comprehensive world view. Perception changes as new information or altered perspectives are integrated and thus, one's view of the "objective" external world is affected.

Thunderstorm Morphology And Dynamics, Second Edition, Revised And Enlarged., Alec H. Paul

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This is Volume 2 in the three-volume series Thunderstorms: A Social, Scientific, and Technological Documentary. The first, The Thunderstorm in Human Affairs, was reviewed in Great Plains Quarterly, Summer 1984. This second offering is also a fine product but is highly technical in places, much larger, more detailed, and considerably more expensive. It is a book for the thunderstorm specialist rather than for the general reader.

The Transition From Farming To Ranching In The Kansas Flint Hills, Joseph V. Hickey, Charels E. Webb

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

For more than a century the Flint Hills have been a stronghold of the livestock industry, an area of Kansas devoted almost exclusively to the feeding and breeding of cattle. One of the last large segments of tall grass prairie that once stretched from Canada to Texas and from Kansas to Indiana, the Flint Hills region covers some five thousand square miles of rolling hills and narrow valleys in east central Kansas. The Flint Hills embrace all or parts of thirteen counties: Butler, Chase, Chautauqua, Cowley, Elk, Geary, Greenwood, Lyon, Marion, Morris, Pottawatomie, Riley and Wabaunsee (fig. 1).1

Nature In Don Segundo Sombra And The Virginian, John Donahue

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Environment and culture shape human beings, both as individuals and as societies. In all the vast plains of the Americas where a cattle industry developed, a human type evolved a distinct way of life: the gaucho in Argentina, the charro in Mexico, the llanero in Venezuela, the guaso in Chile, and the cowboy in the United States and Canada. 1 Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, an Argentine intellectual who was an avid reader of James Fenimore Cooper, was perhaps the first to state clearly in regard to the Americas that wherever a similar combination of geographical features occurs, parallel customs and occupations …

Farm Consolidation In The Northern And Central States Of The Great Plains, Bradley H. Baltensperger Jan 1987

Farm Consolidation In The Northern And Central States Of The Great Plains, Bradley H. Baltensperger

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

During the past half century, American agriculture has been revolutionized and rural America has been dramatically transformed. The industrial revolution had arrived in American agriculture in the 1840s when machines and animal power began replacing some hand tools wielded by humans. But not until the 1930s, when petroleum-driven machines rapidly displaced both animal and human power, did this revolution intensify sufficiently to have significant impacts on rural life and farm numbers. Since that time, reliance on farm-produced inputs-fertilizer, seed, energy-has given way to dependence on purchased factors of production. The commercial aspects of farming have nearly obliterated the subsistence components. …
