Ökologisches Monitoring Der Seen Der Mvr, A. Dulmaa

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298

Review Of From Pittsburgh To The Rocky Mountains; Major Stephen Long's Expedition, 1819-1820, John L. Allen

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The task of editing historical documents is a difficult one; the editor must tread a fine line between preserving the historical integrity of the original text while offering the fresh and insightful information on that text that makes the new edition valuable. The responsibility of the historical editor becomes even more challenging when much of the editorial work involves the condensation of a lengthy original into a shorter new edition. In this new edition of the chronicles of Stephen Long's expedition across the Central Plains to the Rockies, the editor has successfully negotiated the shoals and reefs of condensation, abridging …

Review Of Heartland: Comparative Histories Of The Midwestern States, John C. Hudson Jan 1989

Review Of Heartland: Comparative Histories Of The Midwestern States, John C. Hudson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Twelve authors, one per state, working independently of one another, assigned the common task of compressing their state's history, culture, politics, and geography into a single, brief essay-it could be a formula for disaster, but under the able, guiding hand of historian James H. Madison it turns out to be a successful achievement. Heartland is an enjoyable book, informative without making claims of authority, less comparative than its subtitle promises, but relentlessly sincere in presenting the diversity of pasts that collectively form a regional history of the Middle West.

The Art Museum As Personal Statement: The Southwest Experience, Keith L. Bryant Jr

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The museum boom in this country since World War II has been easy to observe and document. Almost as many museums were constructed in the 1960s as in the previous two decades, and the erection or expansion of cultural palaces has continued into the 1980s. The rising importance of museums has been signaled not only by new buildings and massive additions but also by attendance figures. The leading public attraction in the United States is neither professional football nor baseball; it is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This overwhelming public response is not limited to the …

Review Of Brandon: Geographical Perspectives On The Wheat City, Brenton M. Barr

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This valuable contribution to the regional literature on Canadian urban places was produced to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Brandon University's Department of Geography. The book demonstrates the depth, range, and degree of integration that a team of geographers can achieve. Brandon comprises eleven chapters, a preface by the three editors, and a foreword by one of Canada's most distinguished historical geographers, John Warkentin, who reminds us that in regional studies "it is absolutely vital to understand the experiences of the people who live there, and who have lived there in the past."

Controlled Pasture Burning In The Folklife Of The Kansas Flint Hills, James Hoy Jan 1989

Controlled Pasture Burning In The Folklife Of The Kansas Flint Hills, James Hoy

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Flint Hills of Kansas, forming a band approximately fifty miles wide, start north of Manhattan near the Nebraska border and run south nearly two hundred miles, at which point they merge into the Osage Hills of Oklahoma. This area, together with the row of counties bordering the Flint Hills to the east, is sometimes labeled the Bluestem Grazing Region; its four million acres of native grass represent the remaining one percent of a tallgrass prairie that once stretched north to Canada and east to Indiana and Ohio. 1 Cattle raising in the Flint Hills portion of this region differs …

Roscoe Pound And American Sociology: A Study In Archival Frame Analysis, Sociobiography And Sociological Jurisprudence, Michael R. Hill Jan 1989

Roscoe Pound And American Sociology: A Study In Archival Frame Analysis, Sociobiography And Sociological Jurisprudence, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Roscoe Pound (1870-1964) was a noted botanist, jurist, and sociologist who founded the American school of sociological jurisprudence. Pound's sociological ideas originated at the University of Nebraska. Pound developed numerous ties to other sociologists, joined the American Sociological Society, and published in the American Journal of Sociology. Pound's modern erasure from sociological chronicles is attributed in part to hegemonic processes. The collection of archival data for this study in the history of sociology is generalized (by extending Erving Goffman's metatheory of meaning) as "archival frame analysis." Pound's intellectual milieu is analyzed using Mary Jo Deegan's theory of "core codes" …

Dragons, Blossoms, Sunbursts: Textile Arts Of The Caucasus, Carol Bier Jan 1989

Dragons, Blossoms, Sunbursts: Textile Arts Of The Caucasus, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Rugs from the Caucasus have long been appreciated in Europe and America. Widely known for their bright colors and bold designs, Caucasian rugs have attracted collectors for nearly a century. These rugs, produced in towns and villages, reflect regional design traditions which were amalgamated from diverse sources.

Although embroideries and flatweaves (rugs without pile) from the Caucasus are less well known in the West, their designs are no less bold nor their colors less striking. Produced as a domestic art, they were destined for home use and local commerce. The richness of patterns in these textile arts is in part …

Small Mammals Of A Relict Wet Prairie In Ohio, Eric D. Osborn, Carl W. Hoagstrom Jan 1989

Small Mammals Of A Relict Wet Prairie In Ohio, Eric D. Osborn, Carl W. Hoagstrom

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Killdeer Plains is a Wildlife Area in northwest Ohio managed primarily for waterfowl. At the turn of the century, the area was a wet prairie remnant of the prairie peninsula. Despite attempts at drainage and farming, parts of the area retain the characteristics of a wet prairie. Two spruce-pine (Picea - Pinus) clumps in the plains are used as winter roosts by long-eared owls (Asio otus). Pellets regurgitated by these owls were examined to determine the species and relative numbers of small mammals in the area. Nearly 90% of all individuals taken by the owls were …

Thematic Mapper Digital Data For Predicting Aboveground Tallgrass Prairie Biomass, John M. Briggs, Duane Nellis Jan 1989

Thematic Mapper Digital Data For Predicting Aboveground Tallgrass Prairie Biomass, John M. Briggs, Duane Nellis

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Landsat thematic mapper digital data was found to offer an excellent potential for regular monitoring of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem by providing estimates of aboveground biomass production. Data from seven channels of a May thematic mapper scene were analyzed individually and in various combinations using stepwise regression in Statistical Analysis System (SAS). These procedures were used to determine the most appropriate multiple regression equation for estimating production of 1) total live aboveground biomass, 2) grasses, 3) forbs, 4) previous years dead, and 5) current years dead. Regression equations were based on satellite-derived estimates relative to ground level biomass values for …

Tallgrass Prairie Remnants Of Eastern Nebraska, Judith F. Boettcher, Thomas B. Bragg Jan 1989

Tallgrass Prairie Remnants Of Eastern Nebraska, Judith F. Boettcher, Thomas B. Bragg

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Ten eastern Nebraska tallgrass prairie remnants were evaluated up to four times during the 1979 growing season to assess vegetative composition and the effects of mowing, topographic and size differences, and season of evaluation. Frequent mowing resulted in a reduced canopy cover of some species, such as big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman) (21% lower with frequent mowing), but increased cover of others, particularly the introduced species smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss. subsp. inermis) (35% higher cover with frequent mowing). In addition, frequent mowing resulted in a higher proportion of disturbance species. Comparing the time of mowing, canopy …

What It Means To Be A Humanist Sociologist: A Socioautobiographical Perspective, Michael R. Hill Jan 1989

What It Means To Be A Humanist Sociologist: A Socioautobiographical Perspective, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

I am delighted to speak to you as a representative of the Association for Humanist Sociology. It is my purpose today to acquaint you with the Association for Humanist Sociology, to prompt your queries about the Association, and to answer your questions concerning the ways in which our organization supports the humanist values and professional interests of students and practicing sociologists across the country. Prior to talking about the “nuts and bolts” of the Association’s history and member services, however, I turn to my central topic for today: a socioautobiographical perspective on what it means to be a humanist sociologist.

Review Of Refugees: A Third World Dllemma, John R. Rogge, Editor, Robert Stoddard Nov 1988

Review Of Refugees: A Third World Dllemma, John R. Rogge, Editor, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

The mass movement of humans takes on considerable geographic importance because of the associated changes in the source area, in the region of destination, and in the people who leave a home territory for a foreign environment. These repercussions are often accentuated when people are forced to flee their homeland and to beg for asylum in a strange setting. With the number of contemporary refugees in the world greatly exceeding the volume of voluntary international migration, the need among geographers for information about refugees is great. Refugees: A Third World Dilemma, a collection of thirty papers about various aspects …

Review Of Michael Bradshaw, Regions And Regionalism In The United States, Robert Stoddard Oct 1988

Review Of Michael Bradshaw, Regions And Regionalism In The United States, Robert Stoddard

Geography Program: Faculty Publications

The terms region and regionalism carry various meanings, so the book's emphasis is not conveyed by just the title. Unfortunately this confusion persists, even after reading the book. ... Nevertheless, the text is written clearly (in British English), the maps are pertinent, the index is helpful, and the various subtopics (see below) are presented succinctly.

After reviewing some familiar regionalizations of United States (e.g., the Census divisions, Trewartha's climatic regions, Zelinsky'S cultural area, and ones in regional geography textbooks), the author does a nice job of describing the historical conditions that produced regional differences within the United States. Also cultural …

Entrepreneurs And Private Enterprise: The Development Of Medical Lecturing In London, 1775–1820, Susan C. Lawrence Jun 1988

Entrepreneurs And Private Enterprise: The Development Of Medical Lecturing In London, 1775–1820, Susan C. Lawrence

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Beginning in the 1730s and 1740s, "market forces" tempered by professional and institutional constraints shaped the growth and organization of medical teaching in London. Gradually, after 1815, the growing protectionism of the licensing corporations undercut the private entrepreneur and, by the middle of the nineteenth century, led to the ascendancy of organized medical schools and university-granted medical degrees.

Recent work on eighteenth-century medicine has begun to focus attention on London as a dynamic center for both practical clinical experience and formal lecturing. Such current research has, however, primarily concentrated on a few significant individuals, especially William and John Hunter and …

Foraging Behavior And Switching By The Grasshopper Sparrow Ammodramus Savannarum Searching For Multiple Prey In A Heterogeneous Environment, Anthony Joern Apr 1988

Foraging Behavior And Switching By The Grasshopper Sparrow Ammodramus Savannarum Searching For Multiple Prey In A Heterogeneous Environment, Anthony Joern

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Switching among four alternative grasshopper species by the grasshop- per sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) through frequency-dependent predation was ex- amined. Grasshoppers were presented against a heterogeneous natural background in an outdoor aviary where total density was held constant but relative density of each grasshopper species varied. Switching among prey, primarily between two of the four species, and inter-bird variability in switching was observed. Species-specific prefer- ences and interactions among the alternative grasshopper species affected the final diet choice as one grasshopper species was always preferentially selected and another disregarded independent of changes in relative density. Attributes of avian foraging behavior, including: …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

During Leg 101, the inaugural leg of the Ocean Drilling Program, the JOIDES Resolution drilled 19 holes at 11 sites in the Bahamas. Grids of high-resolution seismic profiles provided information crucial for both site selection and regional stratigraphic interpretations. The first major scientific objective was to understand the long-term evolution of the bank-and-basin pattern that currently characterizes the Bahamas archipelago. Drilling and seismic surveys have indicated considerable platform expansion and retreat rather than stationary upward growth. Upbuilding in the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous was followed by drowning and retreat in the mid-Cretaceous and by renewed expansion in the Cenozoic. At Site …

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298
