Gabriel Harvey's Ciceronianus, Harold S. Wilson, Clarence A. Forbes Nov 1945

Gabriel Harvey's Ciceronianus, Harold S. Wilson, Clarence A. Forbes

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

While he was still in his middle twenties,2 Harvey distinguished himself at Cambridge as a teacher and one of the University's most accomplished Latinists. He was warmly praised and encouraged by older scholars like William Lewin and Bartholomew Clerke; he inspired the devoted friendship of Edmund Spenser; and he enjoyed the patronage, at one time or another, of statesmen of the eminence of Sir Thomas Smith, Sir Walter Mildmay, Lord Burghley, and the Earl of Leicester. The man whose character and talents were thus admired and commended became one of the most learned scholars of his age and exerted a …

The Future Of Poetry, Louise Pound Jan 1944

The Future Of Poetry, Louise Pound

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Poetry is the most beautiful form of human speech. The human race has always had its song and always will have it. It may not be expected to die out. In our present century, however, its status has altered. There are relatively fewer hearers or readers of it than in the long stretches of the past and fewer noted poets. Professors offer courses in the great poetry of the world, and one hopes that they will continue to do so. Poetry societies exist on campuses in great numbers. Prizes are offered to encourage young poets and avenues of publication opened …

The Poet Bland And Sixteen Specimen Poems, Martin Severin Peterson Dec 1943

The Poet Bland And Sixteen Specimen Poems, Martin Severin Peterson

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The only appeal that needs to be made for the poet, Henry Meade Bland, is that he deserves to be better known. The shadow of obscurity has fallen upon a number of our American regional poets and their places in the sun usurped by practitioners of the more currently popular forms of literature. When interest in poetry some day revives, it will be useful to have a record of the poets who responded to their surroundings because of an inward urge to sing. Some of the truly indigenous literature of our own and earlier times is to be found in …

English In Wartime: A Symposium By College Teachers, Louise Pound, Karl Young, P. G. Perrin, Charles Child Walcutt, R. S. Crane, Louise M. Rosenblatt, Warner G. Rice, George R. Coffman, Oscar James Campbell
