Common Birds Of Southeastern United States In Relation To Agriculture, F. E. L. Beal, W. L. Mcatee, E. R. Kalmbach Jan 1941

Common Birds Of Southeastern United States In Relation To Agriculture, F. E. L. Beal, W. L. Mcatee, E. R. Kalmbach

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

From a purely practical point of view the most important of the relations of native birds to man are the economic. The esthetic value of birds is great, greater indeed than that of any other group of animals; and that this is a real and especially a treasured value is not to be denied. But it is in their relation to insect and other enemies of crops that birds are most directly associated with the welfare of mankind, and their value in this particular should be made as widely known as possible. This bulletin is one of a series designed …

Buffalo Grass For Lawns, E. F. Frolik, F. D. Keim May 1940

Buffalo Grass For Lawns, E. F. Frolik, F. D. Keim

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

During the years since 1934 many bluegrass lawns in Nebraska have suffered serious deterioration as a result of drouth and high summer temperature. As a substitute the native buffalo grass has been used increasingly for lawn purposes. Results of experiments and observations indicate definitely that for certain locations buffalo grass has sufficient advantage over bluegrass to recommend it as a permanent lawn grass.

Nebraska: A Guide To The Cornhusker State (Wpa Guide), Federal Writers’ Project Of The Works Progress Administration For The State Of Nebraska

Nebraskiana Publications: Resources and Materials on the 37th State

The guide to the “Cornhusker State” is full of many interesting photographs of the people and places of Nebraska. They portray a largely agrarian state of hard-working farmers. There is an interesting essay on the unicameral legislature of Nebraska. The guide sticks pretty close to the series format. Eight cities are given detailed descriptions. There are 13 detailed tours of the state.

SOME of us in Nebraska know what it is to have made the first wagon track across an unbroken sea of grass into a new land, with no guide but the sun, the distant hilltops, and our own …

A History Of The Czechs In Knox County, Nebraska, Joseph John Van Hoff Jul 1938

A History Of The Czechs In Knox County, Nebraska, Joseph John Van Hoff

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

When the average person thinks of the Czech settlements of Nebraska, he is apt to have in mind the large numbers of this national group who are located in the comparatively centralized area of Douglas, Saunders, Butler, Saline, and Colfax Counties. Few seem to realize that one of the larger of the Czech settlements of the state is to be found in Knox County, a section considerably removed, and having relatively few contacts with the Czechs in the above-mentioned counties.

It is the purpose of this thesis to tell the story of these Knox County Czechs. In it effort will …

Studies On The Vitamin A Content Of Cheese, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis Jul 1938

Studies On The Vitamin A Content Of Cheese, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The vitamin-A contents of twenty-two kinds of cheeses were studied by feeding these cheeses to rats whose body stores of vitamin A had been exhausted by being fed a vitamin-A-deficient diet. Twelve experiments were made in which approximately 1100 rats were used. There was considerable variation in the vitamin-A content of the samples studied. The samples of cottage, Neufchatel, and Limburger cheeses had the lowest vitamin-A potency.

The Novels Of Edouard Rod (1857-1910), James Raymond Wadsworth Jan 1938

The Novels Of Edouard Rod (1857-1910), James Raymond Wadsworth

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Swiss by birth and in his ethical attitude, German by training and in his emotions as well as in his philosophy, French by unofficial adoption and in his intellectual curiosity, Edouard Rod occupied an unusual place among the novelists of his generation. An inherited tendency toward melancholy, a sad and lonely childhood, and his introduction to the philosophy of Schopenhauer, enabled him to analyze successfully the pessimism of his period and laid the foundation for the doctrine of despair which constitutes one of the most constant factors in his work. Still, the inborn idealism and that enthusiasm for Wagner which …

Plato, Prosser Hall Frye Jan 1938

Plato, Prosser Hall Frye

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

It is appropriate that the University of Nebraska should publish, as a grateful memorial, the principal work which Professor Frye left behind him at his death in 1934. And it is especially appropriate because not only the work itself but the very spirit which animated it was engendered here on the spot, in the sparse leisure of his nearly forty years of teaching. For when he came, in the middle nineties, he had a bent toward science and mathematics; and it was here, paradoxically through friendship with a man of science, Louis Trenchard More, that he turned his face to …

Walt Whitman As A Critic Of Literature, Maurice O. Johnson Jan 1938

Walt Whitman As A Critic Of Literature, Maurice O. Johnson

University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism

In these pages the emphasis will be placed not upon Walt Whitman's literary theory, but upon the theory which underlay his criticism of other writers, both ancient and modern. Whitman made ample statement of his literary theory, and it has been expounded by almost everyone who has had anything to say of the poet himself, of his Leaves of Grass, or of his prose writings. To ascertain a theory upon which Whitman based his literary criticism one must examine his chaotic prose and scrappily recorded talk with an eye to selection and organization. One must with purpose arrange the materials …

Root Distribution Of Trees In Relation To Soil Profile, J. E. Weaver Jan 1938

Root Distribution Of Trees In Relation To Soil Profile, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

One of the pronounced trends in American forestry during the past decade has been the development of a widespread interest in soils. As a consequence to the soil as a part of the environmental complex has been attributed much greater importance than formerly in forest production. In fact, the individual horizons of the soil profile are receiving attention each as a more or less distinct habitat of that highly organized body designated as soil. Just as soil scientists, until recent years, have given inadequate attention to the factor of vegetation in the constitution and development of soils, so too little …
