The Lost Art Of Reviewing, And Other Matters, R. A. Rutland
The Lost Art Of Reviewing, And Other Matters, R. A. Rutland
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
During this first year the ADE Newsletter has been, like all efforts, a bit untidy. We have probably paid too little attention to some important aspect of documentary editing. It seems to me that our rapid growth as an organization proved that the regular journals are not meeting our demands, but it may be too ambitious to aspire to publication of a regular journal. Perhaps subsidies for books dealing with the editorial process would be a better way to spend our funds.

Until 1975 only 20 Henry Fielding (1707-1754) letters were known to exist, but the efforts of Martin C. Battestin, William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of English at the University of Virginia, have led to the discovery of 40 additional letters in recent years.

Chaucer's Epic Statement And The Political Milieu Of The Late Fourteenth Century, Paul A. Olson
Chaucer's Epic Statement And The Political Milieu Of The Late Fourteenth Century, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Sets Knight's Tale in the tradition of political verse, and argues that the tale encourages peace in the domestic and foreign affairs of Chaucer's England. The hortatory, heroic style of the tale presents Theseus as a peace-making ideal, pertinent to the French wars of the time. The juxtaposition of the Miller's Tale with the Knight's Tale encourages placid relations with the peasant class.
Several critics, both neoclassic and modern, have observed that) as to kind, the Knight's Tale is an epic fiction. Characteristically, the poems we call medieval epics are what Ezra Pound also says an epic must be in …

Response And Encoding Factors In "Ignoring" Irrelevant Information, John H. Flowers, Jack L. Warner, Michael L. Polanski
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Subjects classified either the numerosity or numeric value of elements in successive stimulus displays. In separate experiments, responses were indicated by oral naming, card sorting, manual tapping, and oral "tapping." Incongruent levels of numeric value slowed naming and sorting, but not tapping, when numerosity was the cue for responding. Incongruent numerosity slowed tapping, but not naming and sorting, when numeric value was the cue. Changes in stimulus response mapping may thus critically alter the ability to ignore an irrelevant stimulus dimension.

“Sociology At Nebraska: 1884-1929,” Together With “A History Of Sociology At The University Of Nebraska,” By J.O. Hertzler, Joyce O. Hertzler, Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
At the turn of the century the University of Nebraska was one of the four leading centers of sociology in the United States. Despite this auspicious start, Nebraska has remained relatively obscure in the accounts of the history of Sociology. This is partially a result of its size: until 1959 the faculty consisted of only five members and was oriented to a small but quality graduate program. The document which follows is an original manuscript recording the early history of the department. It was written by Joyce O. Hertzler in the Winter of 1929. This rough draft, now yellowing and …

Are Psychophysical Models Of Behavior Possible?, Marianne Shaw
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
In "The Correspondence Hypothesis," (Philosophical Review), Bruce Goldberg argues that the correspondence hypothesis is an illusion because "B's having the same thought as A" does not entail "B's having the same set of mental or neurophysiological properties, i.e., brain state or process, as A." If Goldberg is correct, a telling blow has been struck against the construction of information processing and psycho linguistic models created with the intention of later incorporation into neurophysiological models of brain functioning.
However, while Goldberg is correct in pointing out that two individuals can be said to have the same thought and yet …

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
No significant differences in macro- and micromorphology were found between the parasitic stolon and free-living polyps of Polypodium sp. obtained from infected eggs of the North American acipenseriform fish Polyodon spathula and corresponding developmental stages of Polypodium hydriforme Ussov, parasitic in the Volga sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus). Therefore, both the American and the European forms of Polypodium belong to the species P. hydriforme Ussov

In 1978 a provocative article by Dr. Tanselle. "The Editing of Historical Documents;' appeared in the annual volume of Studies in Bibliography, edited by Fredson Bowers. In the 1979 edition of Studies, Dr. Tanselle has followed his earlier survey with a probe of specific problems. The Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia has permitted the newsletter to reproduce several paragraphs from Tanselle's latest contribution.

ADAPT Program: Essays
Like most English teachers I have been skeptical of schemes to reform the teaching of literature and composition. Our experience suggests that for the most part our successes are likely to result from the intangibles of personal styles, developed empirically through classroom practice. As Ross Winterowd has written, "One can only conclude that writing is far too difficult a skill to be taught—and yet we do teach it.” (1975, p.2) Nevertheless, I seized the opportunity to join the ADAPT Program because it seemed to offer a more thoroughly articulated theoretical basis for teaching and learning than I had previously experienced. …
World Bird Damage Problems, John W. De Grazio
World Bird Damage Problems, John W. De Grazio
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 8th (1978)
There is a lack of information on bird-caused economic losses on a worldwide basis. Some estimates are available for specific problems in the United States, Canada, and parts of Oceania and Europe, but loss estimates are almost totally lacking in Latin America, Asia, and Africa. To justify development of control programs, it is desirable that reliable data on losses be obtained. Such data are helpful at all levels of decision-making about bird control, from research to implementation. Bird damage situations throughout the world are similar, involving many of the same crops and genera of birds. This report summarizes major damage …

The Germans, Frederick C. Luebke
The Germans, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
IN 1928, MIDWAY BETWEEN the two world wars, H. L. Mencken observed that with few exceptions the leaders of the Germans in America were an undistinguished and unintelligent lot, a collection of mediocrities, most of whom had something to sell. The few national German ethnic organizations still in existence, he noted, were led by entirely unimportant men. Moreover, the leaders of German immigrant churches were nonentities, unknown to the general public. The blame for this lamentable dearth of leadership, in Mencken's view, rested upon the German Americans themselves, who displayed an unfortunate tendency to follow inferior men. As Catholics they …
