The Structures Of Scientific Relativism, Charles J. Dougherty Jan 1980

The Structures Of Scientific Relativism, Charles J. Dougherty

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Few recent works have generated as much intellectual discussion as Thomas S. Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Yet given the impact this book has had on our understanding of science-its role in the demise of logical positivism, in the current outpouring of interest in the history of science, and in changes in science education - perhaps it is time now, some ten years after Kuhn's provocative Postscript, for still another look at his thesis. That is the purpose of this study. First, those elements of Kuhn's book which committed him to a scientific relativism are reconstructed. Secondly, …

New Host And Locality For Kathlania Leptura (Rudolphi) (Nematoda: Oxyurata: Kathlanidae), Daniel R. Brooks, Jack Frazier

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Marine testudines are known to host two species of kathlanid nematodes, Kathlania leptura (Rudolphi, 1819) Travassos, 1918 and Tonaudia tonaudia (Lane, 1914) Travassos, 1918, Each species has been reported infrequently but exhibits a wide geographic distribution. Both K. leptura and T. tonaudia have been reported from Ceylon and from the Mediterranean Sea near Egypt, and K. leptura has been reported also from the coast of Brazil (Skrjabin, Shikhobalova, and Lagodovskaya, 1964, in Skrjabin (ed,) Essentials of Nematodology, vol. 13, part 3, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, English translation, 1976, TT75-50011, U.S. Department of Commerce, NTIS, Springfield, Virginia 22151), This …

Computers For Word People: Review Of A Guide To Computer Applications In The Humanities By Susan Hockey And Computer Methods For Literary Research By Robert L. Oakman., David J. Nordloh Jan 1980

Computers For Word People: Review Of A Guide To Computer Applications In The Humanities By Susan Hockey And Computer Methods For Literary Research By Robert L. Oakman., David J. Nordloh

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Any mention of computers among humanists is likely to arouse strong passions, but they are no longer simply the older, more absolute passions of disdain on the one hand for any diabolical plot to train a machine to do human-or, in cases of concordancing and indexing, vaguely inhuman-work, or on the other a wholehearted acceptance of electric salvation from drudgery. They are now more complex emotions: interest in dramatic possibilities but uncertainty about ways to proceed, or happy installation of computer components and processes but an expensive fear that someone, somewhere, is doing the same work better and faster and …

A Dialogue: Peter Shaw And Robert J. Taylor On Editing The Adamses, Peter Shaw, Robert J. Taylor Jan 1980

A Dialogue: Peter Shaw And Robert J. Taylor On Editing The Adamses, Peter Shaw, Robert J. Taylor

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

This dialogue is a feature of the Newsletter intended to promote that exchange of ideas for which the Association of Documentary Editing exists. Mr. Shaw was asked to focus his comments both on things done well and on things that might have been done differently-the latter request being an invitation to describe those alternatives to which an editor may, rightly, have said No. The review, with Mr. Shaw's name deleted, was sent to Mr. Taylor, who was asked to comment on the observations. Again, the intention is to foster instructive dialogue. Although the etiquette of some scholarly periodicals suggests that …

The Education Of Editors, Fredson Bowers

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Ever since the pre-meeting of this organization that I attended in Lawrence, Kansas, the association of historian-editors and of literature-editors has seemed to me to be an auspicious one. Each of our sides has a chance to discuss its own special disciplinary problems in a necessary and useful manner, but always with the consciousness that we are also talking to a similarly oriented group, though in another field. However, in addition, I note that some programming has deliberately fostered what it may be pompous to call "cross-fertilization" but what at least offers the opportunity to survey the one discipline's general …

On Responsibility In Ethnography, Mary Jo Deegan Jan 1980

On Responsibility In Ethnography, Mary Jo Deegan

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Ethnographers have a serious responsibility to the people they study, the audience they address, and their colleagues to be both discrete and insightful about the human condition. Accordingly I read Kotarba's article with deep regret and professional distress. It is theoretically confused, methodologically unsound, and ethically questionable. Justification of these assertions is presented in the following pages.

Setting Up An Effective Urban Blackbird Roost Control Program, Sally S. Erdman Nov 1979

Setting Up An Effective Urban Blackbird Roost Control Program, Sally S. Erdman

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The City of Denton is situated 35 miles north of north-central Texas. This area is within one of the major N-S corridors for migratory birds. It is also far enough south so that winters are generally mild and open. The average rainfall of 30 inches sustains good stands of pecan and several species of oak, which serve as excellent roost sites for blackbirds. For the past several years, summering flocks of blackbirds have chosen Denton as a roosting site. Interviews with oldtimers here indicate that flocks of birds have always been around. It is only in recent years that their …

Pigeon Associated People Diseases, Walter Weber Nov 1979

Pigeon Associated People Diseases, Walter Weber

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Feral pigeons (Columbia livia) are not harmless birds. Many potential infections of humans silently exist in pigeons which are not apparent. They have the potential for transmission of over 30 diseases to humans plus another ten to domestic animals. Environmental pollution from pigeon droppings is quite evident. Air pollution involves more than noxious gases from automobile exhausts and belching smokestacks. One serious air pollutant is air-borne fungi, which are agents for infectious diseases. There is much information written about the problem, but it remains primarily in the professional journals and technical references, neatly stacked away on library shelves. …

Attitudes Of Canadians Toward The Control Of Red-Winged Blackbirds, Robert G. Clark, Rodger D. Titman, J. Roger Bider Nov 1979

Attitudes Of Canadians Toward The Control Of Red-Winged Blackbirds, Robert G. Clark, Rodger D. Titman, J. Roger Bider

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Each year across Canada, millions of dollars of damage to agricultural crops can be attributed to vertebrate pests. Estimates for 1975 indicated that approximately $240,000,000 damage was incurred by agricultural pests (Solman et al. 1975). Worldwide impact of these pests must certainly be staggering, especially during the current trend of rising production costs and demand for food. In Canada and the United States, pest control programs may be attacked by increaseingly active and vocal environmental groups. Recently, the killing of blackbirds (Icteridae) and starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) in Kentucky and Tennessee evoked strong objection (Graham 1976, 1978; Jackson 1976). As a …

Faculty Development With English Departments: Composition Resources, Fred Gilliard Jul 1979

Faculty Development With English Departments: Composition Resources, Fred Gilliard

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

College English departments generally teach classes in literature, composition, and language. The latter two have suffered because of preoccupation with the former, but have recently been more heavily emphasized in classrooms. Supposed declines in the communication skills of students earned notoriety through press releases about low SAT scores in the mid-1970's, raising a popular consciousness about basic skills; since the appearance of Newsweek's "Why Johnny Can't Write" in 1976, English teachers in the public schools and their teachers in the universities have-along with television, elective courses, a permissive society, etc.-been held accountable for the "communication crises." Unresolved debate continues …

Attraction Increases And Decreases As A Function Of Emotion-Attribution And Appropriate Social Cues, Richard A. Dienstbier Jun 1979

Attraction Increases And Decreases As A Function Of Emotion-Attribution And Appropriate Social Cues, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

To study the impact of startle-induced arousal on attraction, blindfolded subjects in a “vestibular function” study were startled by a loud noise accompanying the sudden backward tilt of the dental chair in which they were seated. In Study I startled male subjects indicated (on a “postexperimental” questionnaire) greater attraction toward a pretty female experimenter than did control subjects. Study II demonstrated the reverse, with startled male subjects disliking a male experimenter more than controls. In Study III, female subjects startled by a male experimenter indicated greater attraction than controls, although the pattern of their responses differed from males. While an …

Faculty Development: An Historical Perspective, Rosemary Park Apr 1979

Faculty Development: An Historical Perspective, Rosemary Park

POD Quarterly: The Journal of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education

On this program concerned with faculty development I have been asked to speak about the past, when there was no concept of faculty development as we know it and little concern on the institution's part or on the profession's for the growth and continuing vitality of the teaching staff. It was an age of unshared authority and of free enterprise where some succeeded and others failed, and no one cared to know why.

My brief account of more than 300 years of educational history may induce a comparative euphoria, and in that sense it belongs to the end of this …

A Few Great Stories Of The Santee People, Edna Peniska, Paul Robertson, Robert Frerichs, Paul A. Olson Jan 1979

A Few Great Stories Of The Santee People, Edna Peniska, Paul Robertson, Robert Frerichs, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Told by Many Nineteenth Century Santee and by Edna Peniska and Paul Robertson of the Modern Santee.

Gathered and Edited by Robert Frerichs and Paul A. Olson.

The fact that every known culture and civilization has acquired some sort of set of sacred stories is important. The eleven sacred stories in this work have multiple purposes. They possess a value as sheer entertainment; they also tell truths and lessons which explain the meaning of existence. Thus the Santee listener could fmd his place in the world and achieve an inner harmony through hearing stories. The characters in these stories are …

Reviewing The Reviewers, William B. Willcox Jan 1979

Reviewing The Reviewers, William B. Willcox

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The present level of reviewing for our editions is, to my mind, lower than that of the editing itself. Leave aside the occasional critics, high priests of ipsissima verba, who bemoan our textual impurities; look at the average, run-of-the-mill review. It normally contains a paragraph of mild praise for the editing, a paragraph on what the editee, if there is such a word, was doing in the period covered (this can often be written from the jacket blurb), and a paragraph that points out a few errors or, for lack of them, challenges a few specific editorial comments. The result …
