Bird Control Methods And Devices--Comments Of The National Pest Control Association, Philip J. Spear Sep 1966

Bird Control Methods And Devices--Comments Of The National Pest Control Association, Philip J. Spear

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

It may be useful to review some of the considerations that go into recommendations concerning bird management. Later I will make some comments concerning specific methods and devices being used in or promoted for bird control work regardless of whether or not they are new. Members of the National Pest Control Association provide a variety of services, such as fumigation, termite control and general pest control which includes rodent control. There are eight such categories listed in our roster, but only one member in five provides every service listed. Bird control is a rather recent development and is the newest …

Blackbird Depredations In Animal Industry: Poultry Ranges And Hog Lots, C. E. Faulkner Sep 1966

Blackbird Depredations In Animal Industry: Poultry Ranges And Hog Lots, C. E. Faulkner

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

I'm going to move over onto poultry ranges, turkey ranges and hog farms where we have species of birds such as the herring gull, the pigeon, the starling and English sparrow. As a rule, these birds travel relatively great distances from roosts and loafing areas out to the feeding ranges. And why shouldn't they? There is ample high energy food available and usually lack of human disturbance. So they frequent these places during the daylight hours. Actually the losses from these operations are pretty hard to evaluate. Sometimes it is direct, the farmer feels the impact; other times it's indirect. …

Bird Damage In Fruit Crops, Richard N. Smith Sep 1966

Bird Damage In Fruit Crops, Richard N. Smith

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

I don't see any solution in sight for fruit damage caused by birds. I think that one of the reasons is that there has been very little research done concerning the relationship between birds and fruit crops. Probably the reason is that those birds responsible are protected species, and they are highly desirable birds in the eyes of the public. For instance, one of the species that is responsible for heavy losses in fruit crops is the robin. It is the state bird in Michigan, yet it causes a number of problems there each year. Another problem is that growing …

Blackbird Flock Behavior In Corn, A Theoretical Model (With Session Discussion), M. I. Dyer Sep 1966

Blackbird Flock Behavior In Corn, A Theoretical Model (With Session Discussion), M. I. Dyer

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

I realized this past winter that redwings form the base for an international problem, and so I went down to see Jim Caslick in Florida. Unfortunately, I picked the wrong season. I misjudged the weather for when I went down in May to get experimental birds it was pretty hot. Next year I'll be a bit more careful and go down during the winter time. I want to discuss something a bit different but still in line with crop damage by red-winged blackbirds. I want to relate the damage assessment that we're making in agricultural corn to bird behavior. We've …

Good Practice In Bird Management, James W. Steckel

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

I'm going to deviate a little bit from what's been said. I'd like to read to you first of all a Good Practice Statement for Bird Management that was accepted by the National Pest Control Association in the past year, 1965. I think it's important for all the people here, realizing that some of you are suppliers, some of you are from regulatory agencies, some of you are in the bird management business, and others are in¬terested in this field in many other ways. It's important for us to realize, all of us, that this field is just in the …

Side Effects Of Persistent Toxicants, George J. Wallace

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

As you can see from the general tenor of the printed program for this seminar, I am in the unenviable position of trying to discourage you from certain types of chemical control; but my assigned topic "Side Effects of Persistent Toxicants," implies that mission. However, my remarks may be somewhat anticlimax at this time, because it is now generally conceded that we need to reevaluate certain chemicals in control work and to restrict or severely curtail use of those that per¬sist for long periods in the environment. So let me detail my reasons for a somewhat negative attitude toward the …

Handbook Of Nebraska Trees: A Guide To The Native And Most Important Introduced Species (Revised 1951), Raymond J. Pool Jun 1966

Handbook Of Nebraska Trees: A Guide To The Native And Most Important Introduced Species (Revised 1951), Raymond J. Pool

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Nebraska is not to be classified as a forested state since less than 3 per cent of the area of the state is covered by natural timber. However our native forest trees are numerous as to different kinds and their distribution in the state is characterized by many interesting facts. The every-day life of our people is not so commonly associated with trees as is that of peoples in the more wooded states where lumbering and the wood-working industries are very important occupations because of the proximity of great forests of coniferous or broadleaved trees. The people of Nebraska use …

The Shared Vision Of Waldo Frank And Hart Crane, Robert L. Perry May 1966

The Shared Vision Of Waldo Frank And Hart Crane, Robert L. Perry

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The central purpose of this study is to explore the nature of Waldo Frank's influence upon Hart Crane. More exactly, I will attempt to answer these questions: who was Waldo Frank, what body of ideas did he represent, and which of those ideas were important to Crane? Second, what part did Frank and his ideas play in the composition of Crane's most ambitious poem, The Bridge? These questions are the kind that demand for their satisfaction not only a knowledge of the ideas that each man represents, but also a knowledge of those ideas as they developed in a causal …

Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul Apr 1966

Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

Comparison of five methods for calculating gas chromatographic peaks (disc integration, triangulation, peak height X width at half height, Rt X peak height, and peak height) shows no significant difference in the calculated results when aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, and dieldrin are injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with electron capture detector.

Problems are associated with the calculation of toxaphene, chlordane, DDT, and BHC. The author makes suggestions for calculating these four residues when present individually and in combinations with other pesticides. Use of the last four toxaphene peaks compares favorably with results obtained by using the entire toxaphene curve. …

Voluntary Intake Of Forage By Holstein Cows As Influenced By Lactation, Gestation, Body Weight, And Frequency Of Feeding, W. L. Johnston, G. W. Trimberger, M. J. Wright, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson Feb 1966

Voluntary Intake Of Forage By Holstein Cows As Influenced By Lactation, Gestation, Body Weight, And Frequency Of Feeding, W. L. Johnston, G. W. Trimberger, M. J. Wright, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Relationships involving forage appetite and frequency of feeding forage were studied with high-producing Holstein cows, including 60 complete cow lactations and 49 records of the dry period. Significant correlation (r= .59) was obtained between forage dry matter intake and 4% FCM yield in the lactation period. Patterns of forage DM intake were affected strongly by different stages of the lactation and dry periods. Infrequent periods of hot summer weather decreased intake and milk yield by about 10%. Individual cow differences, however, were the most important source of variation in forage DM intake. Age, body weight changes, body condition, and stage …

Diffusion Of The Chlorine Ion In Potassium Chloride , Robert Fuller Feb 1966

Diffusion Of The Chlorine Ion In Potassium Chloride , Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

The diffusion coefficient of the chlorine ion was measured in pure single crystals of potassium chloride and in crystals containing mole fractions of strontium chloride between 2.1 x 10-5 and 4.69 x 10-4. The results were consistent with the assumption that both anion vacancies and vacancy pairs contribute to the diffusion of the chlorine ion. The diffusion coefficient of the chlorine ion in pure potassium chloride was well represented by the equation D=61 exp (-2.12±0.05 eV/kT) cm2/sec from 560 to 760 °C. The anion-vacancy contribution to the chlorine-ion diffusion coefficient in pure …

Nebraska State and Local Tax Collections: 1965 (E. B. Schmidt)

Information concerning the amounts of tax revenue derived from the various taxes in Nebraska is in scant supply. No single agency is charged by law with responsibility for collecting and reporting such data, and without such central direction it is impossible to coordinate a system of comprehensive reporting. While the Bureau of the Census of the United States Department of Commerce collects and publishes such information every five years, the latest report covering the period ended June 30, 1962:, is considerably out-of-date. This study is intended to supply reasonably comprehensive …

Nebraska County and City Population Estimates for 1965 (Edward L. Hauswald)

Nebraska's population is estimated to have been 1,498,733 at the end of 1965. This represents an increase of 0.9 percent for the year as compared with an increase of 0.4 in 1964. In the five years since 1960, the state's population rose by about 6 percent. (A Census Bureau estimate places Nebraska's mid-year 1965 population at 1,477,000 of 0.4 percent above that at mid-year 1964 and 4.7 percent above that of April, 1960). Our county estimates appear in Table I, page 4; their pattern of change is shown in …
