Chemical Bird Control: Idealism And Reality, James B. Elder Sep 1968

Chemical Bird Control: Idealism And Reality, James B. Elder

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Budding wildlife biologists, whether they wind up in research, management or administration, start out with one attribute in common. They are idealists. It is idealism to be sure, that quickly becomes tempered, if not blunted, by the realities of working for worthwhile, even essential conservation goals in an in-different and frequently hostile environment. For some, the conflict of ideals vs reality is too much and they move on to other, probably more lucrative occupations. Still others, blessedly few in number, lose their ideals completely, become apathetic toward wildlife goals and devolve into that most pitiable of human specimens, the bureaucratic …

The Role Of Fda In Environmental Contamination And Surveillance , Clifford Shane Sep 1968

The Role Of Fda In Environmental Contamination And Surveillance , Clifford Shane

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

The Food & Drug Administration is concerned about birds in two areas. One is the direct contamination of foods, drugs and cosmetics by birds and the other is the possible contamination of these products by the chemicals used to control birds. Since its conception, the Food & Drug Administration has been concerned about the contamination of foodstuffs by birds. Like all animals, they have both their good and bad points. The one bad point is that they are carriers of certain diseases. In addition, the consumer of today is not ready to accept products which have been contaminated by fecal …

Pest Birds And Modern Architecture, Michael W. Fall, David E. Schneider Sep 1968

Pest Birds And Modern Architecture, Michael W. Fall, David E. Schneider

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

We are offering some remarks on what the entomologist would call the areas of cultural control. Our interest in this approach developed out of a series of information discussions we've had concerning regional planning pro-grams at Penn State. Our ideas on the applications of this to bird management are not well developed; we'd be happy to hear your suggestions and comments. The ideas of cultural control are not new and are only one of many approaches. But perhaps we are reaching a stage of public concern about bird problems and about environmental contamination which make the climate for long range …

Presession Seminar On Blackbird Problems, Tom Stockdale

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

I'd like to open with a very brief discussion, then call on some selected people with whom I've corresponded earlier, and ask if they will discuss a particular aspect of this total bird problem. I've asked that they keep their comments from three to five minutes. Trying to break the total problem down into its several facets we came up with six arbitrary subtopics. For want of better terms I've called these: population census techniques, chemical repellants, sonic repellants, wetting agents, lethal control techni-ques, and damage evaluation. Your particular problem in your area may be slightly different than in other …

The Nebraska Economy: Manpower And Economic Growth, Ronald A. Wykstra Sep 1968

The Nebraska Economy: Manpower And Economic Growth, Ronald A. Wykstra

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The economic growth of states and regions in the American economy follows divergent patterns. During the period from 1910 to 1950, for example, the labor force in Nebraska grew at a slower rate than did the national labor force. Nebraska had over onequarter of a million fewer workers than would have been the case if growth in Nebraska had occurred at the national rate. More recently it has been observed that employment in Nebraska increased 25 percent from 1939 to 1958. This increase does not compare favorably with the nation as an employment "growth gap" (the difference in state and …

Relationship Between Protein And Ribonucleic Acid Synthesis During Outgrowth Of Spores Of Bacillus Cereus, S. Rodenberg, W. Steinberg, J. Piper, Kenneth W. Nickerson, J. Vary, R. Epstein, H.O. Halvorson Aug 1968

Relationship Between Protein And Ribonucleic Acid Synthesis During Outgrowth Of Spores Of Bacillus Cereus, S. Rodenberg, W. Steinberg, J. Piper, Kenneth W. Nickerson, J. Vary, R. Epstein, H.O. Halvorson

Papers in Microbiology

The rate of protein and ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis was examined during the outgrowth of spores of Bacillus cereus T in a chemically defined medium. RNA synthesis started 2.5 min after the initiation of germination, and protein synthesis after 4 min. Addition of a complete amino acid supplement and uracil supported high rates of RNA and protein synthesis throughout outgrowth. To determine the relationship between the rate of protein (k) and RNA synthesis, the kinetics of formation of various classes of RNA were followed during outgrowth. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) comprised a relatively constant fraction of the total RNA …

Measuring Milk Flow Of Dairy Cows, G. H. Schmidt, L. Dale Van Vleck Jul 1968

Measuring Milk Flow Of Dairy Cows, G. H. Schmidt, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Milk flow measurements on 124 cows were analyzed to determine how they are affected by vacuum level, pulsation rate, pulsation ratio of the milking machine, and the breed, age, stage of lactation, and milk yield of the cow. Average rate of flow prior to machine stripping, yield during the first minute, and yield during the first 2 rain of milking were highly correlated with maximum rate of milk flow. These measurements were significantly increased by days in milk, vacuum level, pulsation rate, pulsation ratio, and total yield. Age at calving had a slight effect on yield during the first minute …

Formation Of Etchable Tracks In Dielectrics, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich Jun 1968

Formation Of Etchable Tracks In Dielectrics, Robert Katz, E. J. Kobetich

Robert Katz Publications

It is proposed that etchable damage is produced in dielectrics by energetic charged particles when a critical dosage of ionization energy is deposited at a critical distance from the ion's path by secondary electrons. Within the critical cylinder, molecular fragments more soluble than the parent molecule are formed. The radius of the critical cylinder is taken to be approximately 20 Å, as is appropriate to the passage of the etchant along the track and the diffusion of reaction products back to the surface. At the critical radius the dosage approximates doses producing bulk damage under γ irradiation. The proposed criterion …

Width Of Heavy-Ion Tracks In Emulsion, E. J. Kobetich, Robert Katz Jun 1968

Width Of Heavy-Ion Tracks In Emulsion, E. J. Kobetich, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Profiles of the solid core of long, flat, ending tracks of heavy primary cosmic rays in Ilford G-5 emulsion have been measured by manually tracing their enlarged (3500X) photographic image. These measurements agree well in the ending 3000 μ of residual range (β <0.3) with a reformulated theory of track width based on computation of the spatial distribution of ionization energy. The measured core width in G-5 emulsion is the sum of the sensitized cylinder diameter, at which 6000 erg/cm3 of ionization energy is deposited by δ rays, and the diameter of a developed grain.

Possible Trivacancy Contribution To Ionic Conductivity, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly Jun 1968

Possible Trivacancy Contribution To Ionic Conductivity, Robert Fuller, M.H. Reilly

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Fuller and Reilly [1], Fuller, Reilly, Marquardt and Wells [2], and Allnatt and Pantelis [3] have recently reported the results of measurements of the intrinsic electrical conductivity σ of RbCl, KCl and NaCl, respectively. All of these results showed an anomalous behavior of the log (σT) vs. T-1 plot at temperatures near the melting points of the various crystals. It is the purpose of this note to discuss the suggestion [4] that the anomaly may be due to a trivacancy mechanism.

The plots of the log (σT) vs. T –1 were found to have too …

The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges Jun 1968

The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Because children’s literature is considered to be a development of the past two centuries, it is generally believed that there are differences between children's literature and adult literature. The majority of people who have written extensively about children's literature have been primarily concerned with those differences. I too believe that there are differences between children's literature and adult literature; but those differences seem to me to be neither as extensive nor as significant as has been commonly assumed. What are the differences? Can they be described? Are there also significant similarities between children's literature and adult literature?

I believe that …

The Fable And The Fabulous: The Use Of Traditional Forms In Children's Literature, Ned Samuel Hedges

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

I believe that there are features common to both children is and adult literature, and that those similarities are much more important to a proper understanding of children's literature than are the differences that exist. This study. will carry the burden of proof for that belief. If goad children's literature is susceptible to serious interpretive criticism, and I believe that it is, it is so primarily because of what it contains in common with general. literary tradition rather than because of what it contains different from general. literary tradition. The complexity of the children's books that I will analyze in …

Selection Of Dairy Cows For Economic Merit, J. W. Wilton Apr 1968

Selection Of Dairy Cows For Economic Merit, J. W. Wilton

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Selection of dairy cows for economic merit requires the use of a model for genetic merit that involves the cross-product of the genetic values for milk and milk fat percentage. A linear and a quadratic index are described as procedures for selection of cows, the linear index being b1pm + b2pt and the quadratic index being b1pm + b2pt + b2pm2 + b4pt2 + b5pmpt where pm and pt are the phenotypic deviations …

Can The Superior Learnability Of Meaningful And Pleasant Words Be Transferred To Nonsense Syllables?*, Albert Silverstein, Richard A. Dienstbier Apr 1968

Can The Superior Learnability Of Meaningful And Pleasant Words Be Transferred To Nonsense Syllables?*, Albert Silverstein, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The Ss in 2 experiments first learned a PA list of words as responses to nonsense syllables. In 1 condition the words differed in meaningfulness (M) and in the other condition the words differed in pleasantness (PL). Next, Ss learned a 2nd PA list of the same syllables as responses to numbers. High-M words were learned faster than low-M words, but did not transfer either this difference in learning or the difference in rated M to the syllables. Pleasant words were learned faster than indifferent words in one experiment (men’s) but not in the other (women’s). In neither experiment did …

On The Pulsational Stability Of Blue Supergiants, Richard Stothers, Norman R. Simon Apr 1968

On The Pulsational Stability Of Blue Supergiants, Richard Stothers, Norman R. Simon

Norman R. Simon Papers

The brightest blue supergiants represent the most massive evolved stars known. They are believed to be in the core helium-burning phase of evolution. To discuss the question of their stability, model interiors of core helium-burning stars with hydrogen-burning shells have been constructed and tested for pulsational instability (15-1000 M ʘ). All models are found to be extremely stable against nuclear-energized pulsations despite the high radiation pressure. Consequently, any star with mass less than the critically stable mass on the main sequence should evolve into the blue-supergiant region without disruption. By combining the theoretical calculations with the available observational data …
