Variation Of Milk Records Within Paternal-Sib Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck
Variation Of Milk Records Within Paternal-Sib Groups, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Differences between daughter-dam and paternal sib estimates of heritability of first lactation milk yield have not been explained for New York data. Deviations of first lactation records from herdmate means of 155,070 artificially sired Holsteins were analyzed to examine the effect of unequal within group variances on the paternal sib estimate of heritability. The statistical model used to describe the data was yy = μ + si + eiy with σ 2yi = σ 2s + = σ2ei. Estimates of the within sire-group variances, σ1 2ei, were heterogeneous (P …
Floral Morphology And Phylogeny In The Hydrocharitaceae, Robert B. Kaul
Floral Morphology And Phylogeny In The Hydrocharitaceae, Robert B. Kaul
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The vascular anatomy of 13 of the 15 genera of the Hydrocharitaceae has been studied, and certain aspects of floral morphology are considered. The flowers of the family show a broad range of specialized structures combined with primitive characteristics. The origin of paired and single stamens is interpreted as probable modifications of fascicled stamens. Extreme reduction in the androecium is shown for several genera. Tendencies toward reduction and fusion within the gynoecium are pronounced. Most genera are at least slightly syncarpous, but a few are apocarpous. The inferior ovary is appendicular in nature, with some genera exhibiting more complete fusion …

Problems Of Epidemiological Geography (Report Viii): Structure Of A Zoonosis Nosoareal, I.I. Yelkin, V.K. Yaschkul
Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
The Main structural indices of a nosoareal are the focalress in the distribution of infectious diseases of man and their causative agents. The problem of the focalness of infections has been developed for quite a long time in the field of parasitology and is a very important division of contemporary epidemiology (Ye. N. The Evolution Of Duck Courtship, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Evolution Of Duck Courtship, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
The courtship of ducks is unusual in several aspects. In temperate zones it generally begins very early, usually on the wintering grounds, so courtship is not a manifestation of territorial proclamation and defense as is the case with many songbirds. Nor, because of its early initiation, is courtship closely correlated with gonad growth and fertilization; rather, pair formation is normally completed prior to the period of maximum gonadal activity. Therefore, reproductive behavior in ducks may be conveniently divided into an early phase of conspicuous displays associated with actual pair formation, followed by the later and less elaborate behavior patterns concerned …

The Treaty On Rescue And Return Of Astronauts And Space Objects, Paul G. Dembling, Daniel M. Arons
Space Law Documents
On December 19, 1967, the General Assembly of the United Nations by a vote of 115-0 approved an "Agreement on the Rescue of Astronauts, the Return of Astronauts, and the Return of Objects Launched in Outer Space"; requested the Depositary Governments "to open the Agreement for signature and ratification at the earliest possible date"; and expressed its hope "for the widest possible adherence to this Agreement." This approval by the General Assembly marked the climax of almost a decade of efforts to secure widespread international agreement on procedures assuring the humanitarian and scientific objectives of the rescue of astronauts in …

A Brief History Of The Namru-3 Medical Zoology Program, Harry Hoogstraal
A Brief History Of The Namru-3 Medical Zoology Program, Harry Hoogstraal
United States Naval Medical Research Unit 3: Publications
The NAMRU-3 Medical Zoology program began during Easter week of 1950. We had just closed the NAMRU-3 field station at Torit, in Equatoria Province of soulheastern Sudan, and were heading homeward to the United States. However, the offer to remain in Egypt for a year or two to develop a Medical Zoology department at NAMRU-3 provided an interesting challenge after working for several years in tropical forests and grasslands of Africa and other continents. We shall briefly describe subsequent events under four headings: (1) Medical Zoology in Egypt, (2) Ticks and Tickborne Diseases of the World, (3) Kala Azar in …

Civil Commitment Of The Mentally Ill In Nebraska, Larry L. Langdale
Civil Commitment Of The Mentally Ill In Nebraska, Larry L. Langdale
Nebraska Law Review
Nebraska's procedures for the civil commitment of the mentally ill are lacking in protections for the rights of those individuals who become involved in the process and thus are constitutionally suspect. The statutes are loosely drafted and unclear as to procedural steps within the commitment proceedings. It is true that such procedures are subject to unique problems that are not readily adaptable to normal judicial processes. It is submitted, however, that individual liberties need not be subordinate to a workable commitment process. While medical and legal views of the process are to a certain extent conflicting, they are by no …
Right To Counsel For Indigents Under The Nebraska Post Conviction Act, William A. Harding
Right To Counsel For Indigents Under The Nebraska Post Conviction Act, William A. Harding
Nebraska Law Review
Many of the rules and procedures of criminal law, especially in regard to the right to counsel, are being rapidly reshaped. While much of this reformation is being accomplished by the decisions of the United States Supreme Court, a good deal of the change, particularly in post conviction review, is coming from the states themselves. Nebraska passed a Post Conviction Act in 1965 that is somewhat akin to the federal post conviction review proceeding. The Act does not provide an avenue for repetitious review but instead allows the defendant a post conviction review on the basis of constitutional changes that …
Objective Theory Of Agency: Apparent Authority And The Estoppel Of Apparent Ownership, Michael Conant
Objective Theory Of Agency: Apparent Authority And The Estoppel Of Apparent Ownership, Michael Conant
Nebraska Law Review
The purpose of this study is to reconsider the theoretical foundations of the liability of a principal to third parties in contract. In order to reconcile the extended liability of the principal for unpermitted contracts of his agent beyond traditional apparent authority, the treatise writers have created new generalized concepts. The conclusion of this study is that new conceptual generalizations to advance the theoretical framework of the law of principal's liability in contract are not only unnecessary but misleading. The basis of this conclusion is that new concepts with more general and indeterminate content than the older ones seem to …
The New Dilemma In The Juvenile Court, Charles W. Tenney Jr.
The New Dilemma In The Juvenile Court, Charles W. Tenney Jr.
Nebraska Law Review
Recent years have witnessed a mounting crescendo of concern over the administration of our juvenile courts. In general, this concern has manifested itself in two somewhat contrasting attitudes. On the one hand, juvenile court judges are castigated for handing out light "sentences" and kid glove treatment to tough young hoodlums who steal our automobiles, deface our landscape, defile our daughters, and disparage our cherished institutions—all, probably, while hopped up on narcotics or barbiturates. On the other hand, the juvenile court and its judges are seen as instruments of oppression, inequity, and injustice, masquerading behind a facade of benevolence and concern …
Admission To Bar—Civil Disobedience Not Sufficient Grounds For Finding Lack Of Good Moral Character—Hallinan V. Committee Of Bar Examiners Of State Bar, 65 Cal. 2d 447, 421 P.2d 76, 55 Cal. Rptr. 228 (1966), William B. Fenton
Nebraska Law Review
Deliberate acts of violence in purported support of a social cause doubtlessly will not be tolerated by bar committees and reviewing courts from a present or prospective member of the bar. But the credentials of a lawyer need not necessarily be denied to one who sincerely and peaceably participates in an act of civil disobedience after it becomes apparent that normal methods of petitioning for improvement through established private or government channels have proved useless.

Arbitrary Administrative Decisions: The Need For Clearer Congressional And Administrative Policies, Edward V. Long
Arbitrary Administrative Decisions: The Need For Clearer Congressional And Administrative Policies, Edward V. Long
Nebraska Law Review
There are basically three types of arbitrary decisions. One type is a decision characterized by the lack of any determining principle. The second type is characterized not so much by the lack of a determining principle as by the broad or generalized nature of the principles which do exist. The third type of arbitrary decisions results from factors which are extrinsic to but inextricably intertwined with and having a great influence on the decision which is rendered. It is much easier to find workable solutions to the first and third category of cases than it is for the second category. …
Standards—A Safeguard For The Exercise Of Delegated Power, Maurice H. Merrill
Standards—A Safeguard For The Exercise Of Delegated Power, Maurice H. Merrill
Nebraska Law Review
There is a widely approved "doctrine that delegation of legislative or judicial power to administrative agencies must be limited by the imposition of legislatively prescribed standards" in order to be valid under state and national constitutions. What is the practical value of the doctrine of standards? Since it rests not upon specific constitutional texts but upon judicial construction of very broad constitutional provisions, I suppose it may be proper to argue that this interpretation should be reexamined in the light of experience. I suggest that the practical employment of the doctrine of standards embodies a number of useful functions. The …
