Physics, Chapter 37: Reflection And Refraction, Henry Semat, Robert Katz Jan 1958

Physics, Chapter 37: Reflection And Refraction, Henry Semat, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

In the passage of a beam of light through a medium, some of the radiant energy is absorbed and is transformed into internal energy, while some of it is scattered in all directions. The oscillating electric field associated with the light wave sets some of the electrons of the medium into oscillation, thus giving up some of its energy, and these oscillating electrons subsequently reradiate energy as scattered electromagnetic radiation. Scattering therefore takes place only in the presence of matter. The color of the sky is due to the small amount of scattering of sunlight by the molecules of the …

When an isolated charged conducting sphere bears a charge Q, the potential of the sphere may be computed from the results of Section 23-6 by considering that the electric intensity outside the sphere is as though the entire charge of the sphere were concentrated at its center.

Rapid Tests For Free And Bound Coumarin In Sweetclover, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Two qualitative fluorometric methods are described. The tube test, in which scoring is based upon visual comparison of the fluorescence of test solutions with the fluorescence of standards, was more reliable than the paper test. The paper test should be used primarily for rapid, initial screening of large populations.

Physics, Chapter 23: The Electric Field, Henry Semat, Robert Katz Jan 1958

Physics, Chapter 23: The Electric Field, Henry Semat, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

We have previously described the gravitational field as one way of thinking about gravitational forces (Section 6-16). If an object of mass m at rest at a point P experienced a force, we could attribute that force to the presence of the gravitational field. In a similar way we may attribute the force experienced by an electric charge at rest at a point P to the presence of an electric field at that point. From the preceding chapter we recognize that the existence of a force ,on a charged particle is due to the presence of other charged particles in …

Physics, Chapter 20: Wave Motion, Henry Semat, Robert Katz Jan 1958

Physics, Chapter 20: Wave Motion, Henry Semat, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Wave motion is an important method of transferring energy from one place to another without involving the actual transfer of matter. When a pebble is dropped into a still pool, some of the kinetic energy of the pebble is used to generate the ripples which spread out in all directions over the surface of the pool. When the ripples pass by a floating object, such as a bit of cork, the cork bobs up and down, having acquired its kinetic energy of vibration from the ripple system. The ripples thus serve to deliver some of the energy of the pebble …

Attorney-Client Privilege—Admission In Legislative Hears, W. C. Nelson Jr. Jan 1958

Attorney-Client Privilege—Admission In Legislative Hears, W. C. Nelson Jr.

Nebraska Law Review

Joseph Lanza, while in the Westchester County New York jail, had an interview in the counsel room with his attorney. This interview was secretly “bugged” by state officers and a tape recording of the communication was made. A New York State Joint Legislative Committee, with a view towards investigating the operation of state government, investigated the parole violation of Lanza. The Committee announced that it was planning to make public the recording of the interview between Lanza and his attorney. Lanza and the attorney brought suit to enjoin the disclosure. The Supreme Court at Special Term denied a motion to …

Robert Mcalmon: Expatriate Publisher And Writer, Robert E. Knoll Aug 1957

Robert Mcalmon: Expatriate Publisher And Writer, Robert E. Knoll

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Though Robert MeAlmon has never received critical or popular acclaim, he deserves attention. An important expatriate in Paris in the Twenties, he was a writer, a publisher and a friend of the great and near-great who lived and worked there. He drank, talked, quarrelled with all of them; and we can understand them better for knowledge of him. McAlmon wrote a great deal, two short novels, four volumes of stories, four volumes of poems and a long autobiography. If these books do not earn him a place among the foremost novelists and poets of his time, they ought not be …

George W. Norris's Persuasion In The Campaign For The Unicameral Legislature, Phillip K. Tompkins Jul 1957

George W. Norris's Persuasion In The Campaign For The Unicameral Legislature, Phillip K. Tompkins

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The people of forty-seven states in this country are governed by bicameral or two-house legislatures. The people of the forty-eighth, Nebraskans, are governed by a unicameral or one-house legislature.

On November 6, 1934, the people of Nebraska provided by amendment to their state constitution, a one-house legislature to be composed of between thirty and fifty members to be elected on a non-partisan ballot. The number of solons was later set at forty-three, and 1957 marked the twentieth anniversary of the first unicameral session in Nebraska.

Senator George W. Norris is generally regarded by all as the father of the unicameral …

A Midsummer Night's Dream And The Meaning Of Court Marriage, Paul A. Olson Jun 1957

A Midsummer Night's Dream And The Meaning Of Court Marriage, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The opinion that A Midsummer Night's Dream is largely a shimmering fabric of "moonlight, with a touch of moonshine" has become stock among students of Shakespeare. One rephrases habitual insights concerning gossamer and magic whenever one treats of the work. But there is more to the play than a dream. The efforts of historical scholars to place this comedy in the setting of its dramatic tradition, to see it as " sui generis, a ' symbolical' or masque-like play" suggest that we ought to revise our romantic preconceptions of its structure and theme. Elizabethan masques usually afforded pleasures more …

The Poetic Style Erich Kastner, John Winkelman May 1957

The Poetic Style Erich Kastner, John Winkelman

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The existing studies of the poetry of Erich Kiistner deal almost exclusively with aspects of its content, whether in an ideational or a concrete sense, and have at best only peripheral reference to the esthetic realization of this content. That is, these studies consider the poems primarily in their function as means of communication or even as unwitting autobiography, and in effect ignore the poems in order to "penetrate" to that which they communicate or reveal.

Yet the relation of external and internal in any esthetic object is just the reverse: one would have to penetrate past that which the …

Specificity Of Intermolecular Forces Due To Quantummechanical And Thermal Charge Fluctuations*, Herbert Jehle Jan 1957

Specificity Of Intermolecular Forces Due To Quantummechanical And Thermal Charge Fluctuations*, Herbert Jehle

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The preceding note1 (Paper I) developed the theory of the specificity of some intermolecular forces: the forces due to fluctuations of electric charge distribution in and over the interacting molecules. It was found that for a mixture of molecules in a liquid medium these forces cause a rearrangement of the molecules, so that molecules which have the same distribution of oscillator polarizabilities and oscillator orientations over the frequency spectrum tend to associate. This means that like molecules tend to become nearest neighbors. For that reason it was said that there is specific attraction between identical molecules.

The Life-Cycle Of Diplostomum Baeri Eucaliae N. Subsp. (Trematoda: Strigeida)*, Glenn L. Hoffman, James B. Hundley

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

During the summers of 1953, 1954, and 1955, many brook stickleback, Eucalia inconstans, from the English Coulee, a small stream in Grand Forks, were found infected with an unrecorded species of diplostomulum metacercaria; its life cycle has been reported in abstract (Hoffman, 1955). In 1953, 51 (82%) of the 62 sticklebacks examined were infected, but in 1955 a much smaller number was infected; no exact records were kept in 1954 and 1955. The number of diplostomula per fish ranged from 0 to 335. During the summer of 1956 lightly infected stickleback were also found in Turtle River, Kelly's Slough, …

The Winning National Moot Court Brief, Patrick W. Healey, James M. Knapp, Jerrold L. Strasheim

Nebraska Law Review

The Nebraska Law Review is proud to reproduce here the winning brief of the Seventh Annual National Moot Court Competition submitted by a three-member team representing the University of Nebraska College of Law. To retain that value which may be gained from the brief as a style guide for other collegiate teams in moot court competitions and for the practicing lawyer, the brief is published as it appeared in the final round of competition, rather than in the newly adopted format and typographical style of the Nebraska Law Review. More important, the substance of the brief deals with a …

The rocks exposed in the drainage basin are the Brule formation of Oligocene (Tertiary) age, the Ogallala formation of Pliocene …

Specificity Of The London-Eisenschitz Wang Force*, Jerrold M. Yos, William L. Bade, Herbert Jehle Jan 1957

Specificity Of The London-Eisenschitz Wang Force*, Jerrold M. Yos, William L. Bade, Herbert Jehle

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The London force between macromolecules immersed in a liquid medium has an interesting property which may be of biological significance. For the purpose of formulating the London interaction, one may represent each macromolecule by a set of electric dipole oscillators of specified polarizability, frequency, and orientation. To consider the simplest case, one may study macromolecules of globular form not in direct contact with each other. (They might be separated by Debyeiuckel- Onsager atmospheres made up of molecules from the medium; then the equilibrium distance between the macromolecules would be regulated by concentration changes in the ionic medium.)' Such a geometrical …

Fluorometric Assay Of Free And Bound Coumarin Rn Sweetclover, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz Jan 1957

Fluorometric Assay Of Free And Bound Coumarin Rn Sweetclover, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Free and bound coumarin are extracted by autoclaving leaf tissue in water. Free coumarin is determined directly from an aliquot of the water extract diluted in alkali. Additional autoclaving of the extract in concentrated alkali is required for release of the coumarin from the bound form, permitting an assay for total coumarin. Bound coumarin values are then obtained by difference. Results of the assay as applied to four different phenotypes of sweetclover are given.

Effects Of Water Fluctuation And Vegetation Change On Bird Populations, Particularly Waterfowl, Paul A. Johnsgard Oct 1956

Effects Of Water Fluctuation And Vegetation Change On Bird Populations, Particularly Waterfowl, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

In recent years reclamation activities in the Columbia Basin of Washington have resulted in profound changes in the character of the entire landscape throughout this region. The present study is an attempt to clarify some of the biological effects of impoundment behind O'Sullivan Dam in the Potholes area, Grant County (Johnsgard 1955b). In this area, a large expanse of moving sand dunes and a high water table are responsible for causing the formation of numerous small water areas, or "potholes," between the dunes. The physical nature of the area and its limited potentialities have made it of little value to …

Field Manual, Fm 11-30, Signal Corps Technical Intelligence, August 1956, Robert Bolin , Depositor Aug 1956

Field Manual, Fm 11-30, Signal Corps Technical Intelligence, August 1956, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

This is a very thorough manual which can be viewed as a detailed definition of Signal Corps technical intelligence and of the role of the Signal Corps Intelligence Agency (SCIA). When this was published the field of Signal Corps technical intelligence was about 15 years old and the SCIA was about six years old.

The modern US Army vision of the technical intelligence developed during World War II. Shortly before World War II, Army Technical Services had been instructed to set up intelligence sections in the office of their chiefs. The technical services were bureaus which supplied weapons, equipment, and …

Field Manual Fm 55-8, Transportation Intelligence, October 1956, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence

This is a manual describing the transportation intelligence activities of the Army in the mid-1950s. A more accurate title would be “Transportation Corps Intelligence” since the Army technical services were responsible for intelligence related to their field of expertise in the 1950s.

The modern US Army vision of the technical intelligence developed during World War II. Shortly before World War II, Army Technical Services had been instructed to set up intelligence sections in the offices of their chiefs. The technical services were bureaus which supplied weapons, equipment, and services to the Army, managed the careers of officers in a particular …
