Annotated Checklist Of Mammals Of The Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. I. Chiroptera, J. Knox Jones Jr., James Dale Smith, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Our field investigations on the Yucatán Peninsula were initiated in the summer of 1962 when two field parties from the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas visited the area. One field party consisted of W.E. Duellman and six students enrolled in a summer field course in vertebrate zoology; the other party was composed of the senior author and four students who were conducting a survey of Middle American terrestrial vertebrates and their ectoparasites. Some of the data relative to ectoparasites obtained during this study have appeared in the publications of Emerson (1971), Kohls et al. (1965), Loomis …

Dual Labor Markets: A Theory Of Labor Market Segmentation, Michael Reich, David M. Gordon, Richard C. Edwards
Dual Labor Markets: A Theory Of Labor Market Segmentation, Michael Reich, David M. Gordon, Richard C. Edwards
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
A growing body of empirical research has documented persistent divisions among American workers: divisions by race, sex, educational credentials, industry grouping, and so forth (F. B. Weisskoff, B. Bluestone, S. Bowles and H. Gintis, D. Gordon, 1971 and 1972, B. Harrison, M. Reich, H. Wachtel and C. Betsey, and H. Zellner). These groups seem to operate in different labor markets, with different working conditions, different promotional opportunities, different wages, and different market institutions.
These continuing labor market divisions pose anomalies for neoclassical economists. Orthodox theory assumes that profit-maximizing employers evaluate workers in terms of their individual characteristics and predicts that …
Quasi-Landau Spectrum Of A Hydrogen Like Atom In A High Magnetic Field, Anthony F. Starace
Quasi-Landau Spectrum Of A Hydrogen Like Atom In A High Magnetic Field, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
A two dimensional semiclassical approximation is used to examine the σ polarization spectrum of a hydrogen like atom in a strong magnetic field. Resonances above the zero field ionization limit are found and their energy separations are computed over the region from the ionization limit to 40 ħωc above, where ωc is the cyclotron frequency, for magnetic fields of 10, 17, 25, 32, 40 and 47 kG. At the ionization limit the separation between resonances is found to be 1.500 ħωc, independent of magnetic field strength, which is in agreement with a separation of 1.5 ħω …
Comparison Of The Direct Agglutination And Indirect Hemagglutination Tests In The Determination Of Blood Serum Titers To Escherichia Coli Organisms, I. A. Schipper, Clayton L. Kelling, H. Ebeltoft, D. Graves
Comparison Of The Direct Agglutination And Indirect Hemagglutination Tests In The Determination Of Blood Serum Titers To Escherichia Coli Organisms, I. A. Schipper, Clayton L. Kelling, H. Ebeltoft, D. Graves
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
A comparison of the direct agglutination test and the indirect hemagglutination test for the detection of blood serum antibodies to Escherichia coli organisms indicated that these serological tests were comparable. In some instances the indirect hemagglutination test provided higher endpoint readings. Preparation of the antigens for the indirect hemagglutination test was more time consuming than for the direct agglutination test. Crude extract and purified polysaccharides were comparable as red blood cell sensitizing agents.

An Assessment Of The Coyote Problem In The Great Plains States, Dale A. Wade
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
It has now been 21 months since President Nixon's Executive Order #11643 was issued and there has been a complete annual reproductive cycle in the coyote population of the western states without any major influence by chemical controls. The use of mechanical controls, including non-lethal methods, and greater emphasis on removing only specific offending animals has been advocated during this time as a solution where coyotes prey on domestic animals. With this brief look back, what have been the results?
We do not have absolute data on coyote numbers and livestock depredations resulting from this change in coyote management programs. …

Dramatis personae: Artist, Narrator, Chorus
Synopsis
PROLOG
Perceiving society as decadent, an artist ruminates over his existence. A narrator describes the chorus as they reluctantly assemble on a black box stage.
SCENE 1
Painful thoughts force the artist to remember his past as essentially a trilogy of forces: (1) Caritas – mystical religious feelings embodied in the Latin liturgy; (2) the narrow space between the five lines – an allusion to the musical staff and his career as a composer; (3) post puterbific thoughts – physical, carnal instincts. The chorus dismisses the composer’s concerns as superficial. They speak of their …

Presented here are experimental results of a study of the systematics of electron emission from discrete states of He and He- as produced by H+, H2+, He+, and He impacts. The results were obtained by energy analysis of the electrons emitted at angles of 10° to 160°. Projectile energies ranged from 20 to 150 keV. Differential and integrated cross sections are presented for emission of electrons from the 2s2 (1S), 2s2p(3P), the sum of the 2p2 (1D) and 2s2p(1P) autoionizing levels of He, …

Chronic Toxicity Of A Copper, Cadmium And Zinc Mixture To The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas Rafinesque), John G. Eaton
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Fathead minnows were exposed to a series or concentrations of a copper, cadmium and zinc mixture during a 12.5 month chronic test in water of 200 mg 1-1 total hardness. The metal concentrations in the mixture were selected on the basis of results obtained during previous chronic exposures to each of the metals individually in the same water. Strict summation of the chronic toxicities of the metals was not indicated when they were tested in combination. Toxic effects of the mixture attributable to copper appeared to be increased, but that attributable to cadmium was reduced. The effects thought to …

Captan Toxicity To Fathead Minnows (Pimephales Promelas), Bluegills (Lepomis Macrochirus), And Brook Trout (Salvelinus Fontinalis), Roger O. Hermanutz, Leonard H. Mueller, Kenneth D. Kempfert
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
The toxic effects of capt an on survival, growth, and reproduction of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and on survival of bluegiIIs (Lepomis macrochirus) and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were determined in a flow-through system. In a 45-week exposure of fathead minnows, survival and growth were adversely affected at 39.5 μLg/Iiter. Adverse effects on spawning were suspected but not statisticaIly demonstrated at 39.5 and 16.5 μLg/Iiter. The maximum acceptable toxicant concentration (MATC), based on survival and growth, lies between 39.5 and 16.5 μLg/liter. The lethal threshold concentration (LTC) derived from acute exposures was 64 μLg/liter, …

Seismicity Preceding Moderate Earthquakes In California, Robert L. Wesson, William L. Ellsworth
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Regional seismicity data have been examined to determine the nature of seismicity in the years preceding these moderate earthquakes in California: 1952 Kern County (M = 7.7), 1963 Watsonville (M = 5.4), 1964 and 1967 Corralitos (M = 5.0, 5.3), 1966 Parkfield-Cholame (M = 5.1, 5.5), 1968 Borrego Mountain (M = 6.4), 1969 Santa Rosa (M = 5.6, 5.7), and 1971 San Fernando (M = 6.4). In each instance the moderate earthquakes occurred in areas characterized by a relatively high level of small earthquake activity. In most cases the preceding activity in the area immediately surrounding the epicenter was high …
Preliminary Interpretations Of Coyote Population Mechanics With Some Management Implications, Frederick F. Knowlton
Preliminary Interpretations Of Coyote Population Mechanics With Some Management Implications, Frederick F. Knowlton
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
The need for control of coyote (Canis latrans) depredations and a simultaneous demand for recognition of the aesthetic and ecologic values of the species create a conflict in resource utilization that should be resolved through more intensive management. A coyote population model is proposed from current estimates of density, reproduction, population structure, and mobility. Densities of 0.5 to 1.0 coyote per square mile are frequently suggested, with occasional estimates of 4.0 or more per square mile. Reproductive rates fluctuate as functions of the proportion of females that ovulate, the average number of ova shed, and in utero viabilities. …
Noumenon: A Metaphysical Comedy, Randall Snyder
Noumenon: A Metaphysical Comedy, Randall Snyder
Randall Snyder Compositions
Noumenon: Synopsis
The work, which perhaps could best be described as a “metaphysical comedy”, consists of three levels:
1) the biography of the unnamed dilettante artist-philosopher “__”
2) personal interpolations by the biographer, Russel Stanford
3) editor’s commentary by Randall Snyder
Stanford, in spite of a lack of enthusiasm for the subject, agrees to write the biography. During this period his health degenerates and he increasingly imposes his own irrelevant opinions into the biography (his remarks are all indented, using the Palatino font, and further identified by the use of the small case “i”. The “biography” uses the New York …

Decompositions Of Modules And Matrices, Thomas S. Shores, Roger Wiegand
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
A canonical form for a module M over a commutative ring R is a decomposition M £ R/^ © • • • 0 #//„, where the Ij are ideals oiR and I x £ ••• £ /„.A complete structure theory is developed for those rings for which every finitely generated module has a canonical form. The (possibly larger) class of rings, for which every finitely generated module is a direct sum of cyclics, is also considered, and partial results are obtained for rings with fewer than 2C prime ideals. For example, if R is countable and every finitely generated …
Extension Wildlife Damage Control In Colorado, Dale A. Wade
Extension Wildlife Damage Control In Colorado, Dale A. Wade
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Wildlife damage control in Colorado may be more varied and difficult than in some other states. Colorado has a widely diversified agricultural, industrial and recreational business base and a great range of human density from the Denver Metropolitan area containing approximately half of the state population to the semi-desert and mountain areas where the population density is extremely low.
Approximately 40 percent of the land is federally owned, much of this in large tracts in the western two-thirds of the state. Privately owned land in this western area is primarily distributed along the more accessible valleys of major drainages. It …

Reproductive Efficiency And Viability In Two Bos Indicus And Two Bos Taurus Breeds In The Tropics Of India And Colombia, L. (Lemka) Hamed, R. E. Mcdowell, L. Dale Van Vleck, H. Guha, J. J. Salazar
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Records from two herds in India and two in Columbia representing respectively two breeds of Bos indicus (Hariana and Deshi) and two Bos taurus breeds—Blanco Orejinegro (BON) and Costeño Con Cuernos (CCC) were evaluated for breeding efficiency and viability. Average age at first calving was 52.1, 46.3, 39.5 and 40.7 months for Hariana, Deshi, CCC and BON. Season of birth did not influence age at calving. Ranking for calving interval was similar, average 479, 418, 396 and 382 days with season effects significant (P<.05) for only Deshi. BON and CCC had fewer days open but much shorter lactation periods, average 73 and 157, thus days carried calf in lactation were similar for all breeds. Percent of time dry per calving interval was high for all breeds, 44.2, 36.7, 64.1 and 81.0 for Hariana, Deshi, BON and CCC. Average annual mortality of females by 12 months of age was 23.6% for Hariana, 17.0% Deshi and 27.0% BON. In the same herds 46.4%, 51.1% and 49.0% of females born alive lived to first calving and annual losses among cows were 18.0%, 17.0%, and 21.0%; therefore, affording little opportunity for selection among females. Temperament, as determined by response to the milking process with and without the calf present, showed all the breeds were similar in this respect. Environmental effects were most important for all traits but genetic differences were indicated for age at first calving and milk yield. On a theoretical basis little gain could be expected in net dairy merit from crosses between the Columbian and Indian breeds.
