Balancing Acts: Gender Parity Law And Cultural Boundaries In Senegal, Seulgie Lim Feb 2026

Balancing Acts: Gender Parity Law And Cultural Boundaries In Senegal, Seulgie Lim

All Faculty Scholarship

This article investigates the intersection of global gender equality norms with local contexts, focusing on Senegal’s implementation of the 2010 gender parity law. Despite the global trend towards electoral gender quotas, the effectiveness and societal acceptance of these measures vary significantly. Through a critical examination of existing literature on gender quotas and an analysis of the parity law’s reception in Senegal, this article explores the nuanced dynamics between legislative measures and societal norms. It argues that, while gender quotas can enhance women’s visibility in politics, deeply ingrained cultural and religious norms may undermine the more substantive impact of such legislated …

Resilient Grid Architectures For High Renewable Penetration: Electrical Engineering Strategies For 2030 And Beyond, Ehab Bayoumi Feb 2026

Resilient Grid Architectures For High Renewable Penetration: Electrical Engineering Strategies For 2030 And Beyond, Ehab Bayoumi

Mechanical Engineering

The global shift toward decarbonized power systems is driving unprecedented penetration of variable renewable energy sources, especially wind and solar PV. Legacy grid architectures, built around centralized, dispatchable synchronous generation, are ill-suited to manage the bidirectional power flows, reduced inertia, and new stability constraints introduced by inverter-based resources. Existing research offers deep but fragmented insights into individual elements of this transition, such as advanced power electronics, microgrids, or market design, but rarely integrates them into a coherent architectural vision for resilient, high-renewable grids. This review closes that gap by synthesizing technical, architectural, and institutional perspectives into a unified framework for …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Adoptive cell therapies (ACT) leverage tumor-immune interactions to cure cancer. Despite promising phase I/II clinical trials of chimeric-antigen-receptor natural killer (CAR-NK) cell therapies, molecular mechanisms and cellular properties required to achieve clinical benefits in broad cancer spectra remain underexplored. While in vitro and in vivo experiments are essential, they are expensive, laborious, and limited to targeted investigations. Here, we present ABMACT (Agent-Based Model for Adoptive Cell Therapy), an in silico approach employing agent-based models (ABM) to simulate the continuous course and dynamics of an evolving tumor-immune ecosystem, consisting of heterogeneous "virtual cells" created based on knowledge and omics data observed …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The inwardly rectifying potassium channel Kir7.1 is essential for the physiological function of diverse tissues, including the retinal pigment epithelium and the gestational myometrium. Loss-of-function mutations in KCNJ13, which encodes Kir7.1, or conditional ablation of Kir7.1 in the retinal pigment epithelium, lead to early-onset vision loss. Despite strong genetic evidence supporting Kir7.1 as a therapeutic target, its regulation by endogenous ligands-beyond phosphoinositides-remains poorly understood. Here, we report cryo-electron microscopy structures of human Kir7.1 in multiple functional states at resolutions ranging from 2.8 Å to 4.0 Å. These structures uncover the molecular basis of Kir7.1 modulation by PI

Teaching The Science Of Reading Critically, Cheu-Jey Lee Feb 2026

Teaching The Science Of Reading Critically, Cheu-Jey Lee

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

In light of the increasing popularity of the science of reading (SOR) and its influence on literacy education, this paper is concerned with how to teach SOR critically without embracing it blindly. The definition of SOR, along with its limitations, is presented first. Then, critical reading is argued to be missing in SOR and its broadened/improved variations. Finally, an instructional example is provided to illustrate how to teach SOR critically through a whole-part-whole hermeneutic reconstructive process. This example demonstrates that the foundational literacy skills emphasized in SOR and the critical reading skills fostered through the four dimensions of the critical …

Retrieving Personalized Content Using Ai Agents And User Profile Information, Benjamin Azose, Akancha Gupta Feb 2026

Retrieving Personalized Content Using Ai Agents And User Profile Information, Benjamin Azose, Akancha Gupta

Defensive Publications Series

Agentic workflows can automate many user journeys. However, when a user journey involves choosing between different options, e.g., dietary preferences, the AI agent may be inadequate in automating the user journey, requiring manual actions and/or user inputs to make a choice. This disclosure describes techniques that automate agentic workflows by permitting an AI agent to access user preferences from a user profile prior to performing a corresponding task. With user permission, user preferences are obtained via explicit input, user browsing history, transactions, etc. and are stored in a user profile that is accessible to AI agents. When summoned to perform …

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Background: Recent studies have highlighted the relationship between gut microbiome and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), revealing the ways of how gut microbial balance impacts conditions ranging from inflammatory bowel diseases to neurological disorders. The emerging field of the gut-brain-axis suggests production of microbial metabolites influences AD progression. However, there is limited understanding of molecular mechanisms involved in neurological disease when gut microbiome dysbiosis occurs. This study aimed to identify hub genes and pathways associated with gut microbiome dysbiosis and AD through data analytics approaches.

Methods: Public gene expression datasets on gut microbiome dysbiosis, and AD were obtained from the GEO and …
