Graduate Education And New Jobs In Education, Paul A. Olson
Graduate Education And New Jobs In Education, Paul A. Olson
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Teacher education has too largely concerned itself with a study of schooling rather than a study of education. In the next generation, given the concerns that I’ve talked about, we’re going to have to look much more intensively, on the one hand, at how much human beings learn as biological creatures and, on the other hand, at all the cultural and legal constraints on learning that exist. We will look at education in industry, in the community, in community action programs, in the tribal council, education through ritual, and through play, as well as through public schooling. The job of …

Corynebacterium Nebraskense, A New, Orange-Pigmented Phytopathogenic Species, Anne K. Vidaver, Manley Mandel
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
A new species of Corynebacterium isolated from field corn is described. The isolates form a homogeneous group that is recognized as a new species, Corynebacterium nebraskense. The organism is characterized by orange-pig-mented colonies, inability to grow on 0.005% triphenyltetrazolium chloride agar, specific bacteriophage sensitivity, and a guanine plus cytosine content of 73.5 mol%. These and other characters differentiate this organism from other described phytopathogenic corynebacteria. The type strain of C. nebraskense is Fur-1 (= ATCC 27822 = NCPPB 2578).

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
In these exciting times when elementary and high schools teach modern biology, including many of the intricacies of biochemical genetics, the long slow process by which our present knowledge in this area was gained is not often fully appreciated. A third of a century elapsed before Mendel’s work was "rediscovered" and properly appreciated. Archibald E. Garrod’s (1) prophetic appreciation of the relation genetics and biochemistry, beginning soon after the so-called rediscovery of Mendel, lay fallow for more than forty years despite the fact that he published widely and relatively voluminously. As late as a quarter of a century after the …

Sporulation Of Bacillus Thuringiensis Without Concurrent Derepression Of The Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle, Kenneth W. Nickerson, John De Pinto, Lee A. Bulla Jr.
Papers in Microbiology
Bacillus thuringiensis sporulates in a glucose-glutamate medium without concurrent derepression of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Glutamate appears to regulate tricarboxylic acid cycle activity as well as to influence spore heat resistance and production of dipicolinic acid.

On P-Sidon Sets, G. W. Johnson, Gordon S. Woodward
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Let G be a compact abelian group with dual group Γ. A subset E or Γ is p-Sidon (1 ≤ p < 2) if there is a constant α such that each [?] in C(G) with [?] supported on E satisfies [?]. Hence a set is 1-Sidon if and only if it is Sidon. Moreover a duality argument yields that E is p-Sidon if and only if [?] (E) [?] M(G)[?] [?], where the latter symbol denotes the restrictions of the Fourier-Stieltjes transforms to E and where p' = p/(p - 1). Several of the basic results on p-Sidon sets were independently obtained …

Barron's “Good Book” Examines Access Notion: Freedom Of The Press For Whom? The Right Of Access To Mass Media—By Jerome A. Barron, John R. Snowden
Nebraska Law Review
Freedom of the press has long been a paramount concern of the dynamic human. A free press may act as a catalyst to thought in the eternal synthesis of the real and the ideal. The free person, whether lawyer, artist, poet, or political philosopher has traditionally sought the freedoms of speech and press, and the Bill of Rights attempts in the first amendment to insulate discourse from the desires of those who would force a dichotomous choice on people seeking knowledge of the whole. The first amendment in its linear terms proposes to act as a shield, protecting expression not …

“Tippee” Liability Extended To Remote Third Parties: Schein V. Chasen, 478 F.2d 817 (2d Cir. 1973), Dennis A. Graham
Nebraska Law Review
Schein v. Chasen, utilizing common law principles, held that one who is given a "tip" by a corporate insider also acquires the insider's fiduciary duties to the corporation. As a result, the "tippee" must refrain from trading in the corporation's securities until the information is publicly disclosed. The purpose of the rule is to prevent the unfair use of information which is not available to the general public. The legal issues raised by Schein with respect to the obligations of persons other than corporate insiders who acquire nonpublic corporate information have important implications for the securities industry and the …

Swindler's Book Provides “Constitutional Roadmap”: Court And Constitution In The Twentieth Century: The Modern Interpretation—By William F. Swindler, Richard E. Shugrue
Nebraska Law Review
Executive impoundment of appropriated funds, the impeachment issue, the politics of the judiciary, and an acute awareness on the part of the bar that its every public action is being critically observed surely contribute to a mounting interest in constitutional law. For the lawyer, the very center of constitutional government is found in the vast body of case law crafted not only by the Supreme Court of the United States but also by every judicial body including municipal courts, which are called upon to rule on the myriad constitutional questions raised daily in their precincts. Nebraskans might, in light of …
A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Sex Differences In The Behavior Of Children Aged Three Through 11, Beatrice Whiting, Carolyn P. Edwards
A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Sex Differences In The Behavior Of Children Aged Three Through 11, Beatrice Whiting, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This paper uses the cross-cultural, systematic child observations of the Six Culture Study, led by John and Beatrice Whiting of Harvard University, to investigate the validity of the stereotypes of sex differences about nurturance, aggression, compliance, dependency, and other behaviors. The children aged 3 – 11 years, were observed in natural settings in seven different parts of the world. The analysis indicates that there are universal sex differences in the children’s behavior, but the differences are not consistent nor as great as the studies of American and Western European children would suggest. Furthermore, socialization pressure in the form of task …

Nsca - Asc - National Plan For Biological Collections, Asc Committee
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
American systematics collections: A national plan. Developed by a stellar group of biologists including David Wake and Peter Raven, this plan called for action by the systematics community. The estimate of needs in 1973 called for about 63 million USD for the next five years just to keep the US National Collections from disintegrating and to get them in shape to mount the huge effort needed to fully inventory the biota of the earth (a plan that was not even dreamed of until about the year 1995).
A report to the nation's systematics collections community, and includes a National Plan …

Decompositions Of Modules And Matrices, Thomas Shores, Roger Wiegand
Decompositions Of Modules And Matrices, Thomas Shores, Roger Wiegand
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
A canonical form for a module M over a commutative ring R is a decomposition M ≈ R/I1 Ο … Ο R/In, where the Ij are ideals of R and 11 ≤ . . . ≤ In. A complete structure theory is developed for those rings for which every finitely generated module has a canonical form. The (possibly larger) class of rings, for which every finitely generated module is a direct sum of cyclics, is also considered, and partial results are obtained for rings with fewer than 2c …
Bird Damage To Tart Cherries In Michigan, 1972, Charles P. Stone
Bird Damage To Tart Cherries In Michigan, 1972, Charles P. Stone
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Bird damage to commercial fruits has long been a problem in many coun- tries, but the true magnitude of the damage incurred is difficult to determine objectively. Often the opinions of fruit growers provide the only measure of importance. In 1972, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Michigan Department of Agriculture, and the Statistical Reporting Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture obtained quantitative information on bird damage to tart cherries (Prunus mahalob) in Michigan. The results of the survey are presented in this paper.
Monk Parakeet Damage To Crops In Uruguay And Its Control, Donald F. Mott
Monk Parakeet Damage To Crops In Uruguay And Its Control, Donald F. Mott
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) is considered to be a serious agricultural pest in South America. The species is resident in a sizable area from southeast Bolivia, Paraguay, and southern Brazil, through Uruguay, to central Argentina (Meyer de Schauensee, 1970: 103). Since it is hardy, adaptable, and widely sold as a cage bird, there is now concern that large enough populations may become established in the United States to cause damage to grain and fruit crops (Bump, 1971). In April 1973, I visited Uruguay under the sponsorship of the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) to investigate patterns of agricultural …
The Effects Of Fenthion On A Nesting Population Of Quelea During Experimental Control By Aerial Spraying, Jeffrey J. Jackson, Peter O. Park
The Effects Of Fenthion On A Nesting Population Of Quelea During Experimental Control By Aerial Spraying, Jeffrey J. Jackson, Peter O. Park
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Quelea quelea is probably the most important avian pest of cereal crops in the sahelian areas of Africa. Its depredations reduce the cereal production of many African nations that lie within its range. To prevent this damage, bird control organizations carry out campaigns to reduce their numbers. Frequently these efforts have given poor crop protection for the cost of control because of inadequate control technology. Factors contributing to the difficulty of carrying out this kind of control are the migrations of the birds which are still incompletely understood, the inaccessability of many nesting areas, the relatively high reproductive potential of …
“Where Are We?”, C. Douglas Mampe
“Where Are We?”, C. Douglas Mampe
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The subject I have been asked to speak on is “Where Are We?” As I assess it, I think that we, those who are using bird management agents and methods, Federal, State, and other agencies representing research, extension and regulatory, and manufacturers of agents used in bird management, are standing in the middle of a busy intersection and the light has just turned yellow. Some of us have tape across our mouths and cotton stuck in our ears. I think that we have arrived at this intersection in a number of different ways. Some of us have taken separate paths, …
Excavations At Korucutepe, Turkey. Part Ii: The Fortification Wall, Carol Bier
Excavations At Korucutepe, Turkey. Part Ii: The Fortification Wall, Carol Bier
Textile Research Works
Excavations at Korucutepe have brought to light a fortification wall of a type common in Anatolia during the second millennium B.c. The wall had been exposed in places by bulldozing operations for a government farm. Excavation revealed a plan consisting of a curtain wall with a double stone foundation (see fig. 7). Square towers project at intervals where the direction of the wall changes. Adjacent to two of the towers is a passageway, one on the south side of the mound, one on the northeast, leading out from the city. There is no indication of any cross walls, or casemates, …
