The Rectal Gland In Relation To The Osmoregulatory Mechanisms Of Marine And Freshwater Elasmobranchs, Giuseppe Gerzeli, Gian Franco De Stefano, Lorenzo Bolognani, Kurt W. Koenig, Maria Victoria Gervaso, Maria Fausta Omodeo-Salé Jan 1976

The Rectal Gland In Relation To The Osmoregulatory Mechanisms Of Marine And Freshwater Elasmobranchs, Giuseppe Gerzeli, Gian Franco De Stefano, Lorenzo Bolognani, Kurt W. Koenig, Maria Victoria Gervaso, Maria Fausta Omodeo-Salé

Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes

The rectal gland of elasmobranchs secretes large quantities of electrolytes and is of primary importance in the osmoregulatory mechanisms of these animals (Burger and Hess, 1960; Burger, 1962). Analogously, various organs of other vertebrates are also known to be involved in salt secretion (Schmidt-Nielsen, 1965; Bonting, 1970; Bentley, 1971). In general, active ion transport is the basis of this phenomenon; in any case, it requires the presence of structural devices, morphologically and chemically well defined, and of metabolic capabilities which, taken singly, are not specific, but collectively are consistent with active ion transport and salt secretion.

G76-312 What Are Good Labor Relations?, Robert E. Perry

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Good labor relations is the factor most often identified as necessary for successful employment by farm employees. Farmers who employ hired labor also rate "good labor relations" as an important factor, though many rate good wages as more important

What are "good labor relations"? From answers received from employees, they appear to involve a mixture of human characteristics and open communications that build mutual respect and loyalty.

Genetic Regulation Of Flavonoid Content In Seeds And Seedlings Of Melilotus Alba, James E. Specht, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins Jan 1976

Genetic Regulation Of Flavonoid Content In Seeds And Seedlings Of Melilotus Alba, James E. Specht, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Chemical analysis of seeds and seedlings of the CC and cc genotypes in Melilotus alba indicated that these alleles affect flavonoid biosynthesis. The CC seed coats contained orientin and iso-orientin, which were absent in the cc seed coats. The pigment responsible for the red pigmentation of young seedlings of CC genotypes was a cyanidin glycoside. The embryos of seeds of both the CC and cc genotypes contained a flavonoid tentatively identified as a 6,8-di-C-pentosylapigenin. The observation that 3',4'-dihydroxyflavonoids were absent in the cc genotype and that 4'-hydroxyflavonoids were present in both genotypes indicated that the C/c alleles controlled the 3'-hydroxylation …

Photoconductivity In Bone And Tendon, Robert G. Fuller, A. A. Marino, R. O. Becker

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Ultraviolet light can be used to stimulate electrical current flow in bone and tendon. This stimulated photocurrent is directional. In tendon the photocurrent parallel to the fibrils is greater than the photocurrent perpendicular to the fibrils. In bone, the longitudinal photocurrent is less than the transverse photocurrent.

Mach And The Principle Of Verification, Thomas Manig Jan 1976

Mach And The Principle Of Verification, Thomas Manig

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Scholars of the history of the philosophy of science take it pretty much for granted that the scientist Ernst Mach had created much of the initial thrust if not many of the central principles of logical positivism. And for the most part they are quite right in thinking so. Although, as Toulmin aptly put it, 'Mach himself was never a "logical" positivist,' Mach's radically empiricistic and anti-metaphysical orientation was sufficient to justify the feelings of indebtedness most early logical positivists had for him. Indeed, the first manifesto of the so-called "Vienna Circle" of logical positivists was published by the Viennese …

Prospects For Control Of Phytopathogenic Bacteria By Bacteriophages And Bacteriocins, Anne K. Vidaver Jan 1976

Prospects For Control Of Phytopathogenic Bacteria By Bacteriophages And Bacteriocins, Anne K. Vidaver

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The last review on bacteriophages and bacteriocins of phytopathogenic bacteria was that of Okabe & Goto (98). All but one (21) of the subsequent reviews (II, 12, 60, 94, 104) have dealt primarily with viruses and bacteriocins of bacteria other than phytopathogens. The most recent microbiological compendia that in clude bacteriophages and bacteriocins are of limited value for phytobacteriolo gists because the authors generally overlook or ignore such agents (29, 47, 77, 119). However, Adam's classic .book (4), the review by Bradley (II), and the bibliography of Raettig (102) are still of value to phytobacteriologists as are reviews dealing principally …

H I In Early-Type Galaxies. Ii. Mass Loss And Galactic Winds, S. M. Faber, J. S. Gallagher

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Implications of observed upper limits to the neutral hydrogen content of E and SO galaxies from Paper I are discussed. If gas shed by dying stars is completely retained by these galaxies and exists as H I, these upper limits will be exceeded in only 109 yr for E's and SO's and in only 2 x 108 yr for NGC 4472. Evidently, gas either is hidden in some undetectable form or is removed from the interstellar medium completely.

P-Sidon Sets And A Uniform Property, Gordon S. Woodward

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Let G be a compact abelian group with dual group Γ. Denote by Lp (E) and M (E) the usual spaces of Haar-measurable functions and bounded regular Borel measures, respectively, which are supported on the subset E of G or Γ. The Haar measure on G is normalized and its dual is the Haar measure on Γ. Let ᵩ˰ denote the Fourier or Fourier-Stieltjes transform of the function or measure ᵩ. A subset E < Γ is said to be p-Sidon for some 1 ≤ p < 2 (not interesting for p ≥ 2) if there is an α > 0 such that ||ᵩ˰ …

Applying Due Process To Gag Rules And Orders, Laurie Smith Camp Jan 1976

Applying Due Process To Gag Rules And Orders, Laurie Smith Camp

Nebraska Law Review

At its 1976 annual meeting held in August, the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates recommended a new court procedure for the application of due process to the issuance of gag orders. The proposal seeks to render standing gag rules unenforceable and would provide for special gag orders only after notice and an opportunity for a hearing are given to interested parties. The ABA proposal will help to reduce the current glut of judicial restraints by providing more specific procedural guidance than was offered by the Supreme Court in Nebraska Press Association v. Stuart. This article first explores …

Nebraska Law Review

The temporary restraining order is an ex parte injunction, issued without notice or prior hearing. In United Farm Workers v. Superior Court, the constitutionality of an ex parte temporary restraining order issued in an agricultural labor dispute was attacked under the first and fourteenth amendments to the federal Constitution and article I, section 2 of the California constitution as a prior restraint on free speech. This case presented the issue of whether peaceful mass labor picketing is subject to ex parte injunctive restraint.

Cultural Pressure On Sex Differences, Patricia Draper Nov 1975

Cultural Pressure On Sex Differences, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

This paper suggests that sex differences in the behavior of children exist but are not necessarily intensified under certain cultural conditions. Under conditions of culture change to a sedentary economy, certain elements of male and female differentiated behavior are exploited in the process of increasing sex differentiation.

Theoretical Study Of Impurity-Induced First-Order Raman Spectra For The Alkali Halides, Arnold Karo, John Hardy Jul 1975

Theoretical Study Of Impurity-Induced First-Order Raman Spectra For The Alkali Halides, Arnold Karo, John Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

A deformation-dipole model with first- and second-neighbor central short-range forces is used as a basis for calculating all symmetry-adapted combinations of eigenvectors (SACEV) necessary for the study of defect vibrations in alkali-halide crystals. As an example of the full set of spectral weight functions, which are tabulated separately, sample results are given for the predicted defect-activated E, Raman spectra for KCl, KI, RbCl, and KBr, assuming no force-constant changes and that the defect is located at a positive-ion site. The results show qualitative agreement with the earlier findings of Harley, Page, and Walker, even though the deformation-dipole model is not …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Investigations were conducted in the Nebraska Sandhills to determine the impact of transition from grassland to irrigated corn on selected insect species, to identify indigenous species that may be economically important to corn production, and to provide a point of reference for future development of pest management programs for irrigated corn.

Geochemistry Of The Cenozoic Volcanic Rocks Of Ross Island And Vicinity, Antarctica, S. S. Goldich, S. B. Treves, N. H. Suhr, J. S. Stuckless Jul 1975

Geochemistry Of The Cenozoic Volcanic Rocks Of Ross Island And Vicinity, Antarctica, S. S. Goldich, S. B. Treves, N. H. Suhr, J. S. Stuckless

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Cenozoic volcanic rocks of Ross Island and vicinity, Antarctica, are surface flows, tuffs, breccias, and small intrusives. The prominent rock is basanitoid. Alkali-basalt magma reached the surface over an appreciable length of time and was differentiated to produce a rock series: basanitoid → trachybasalt → phonolite. The alkalic, silica-undersaturated rocks are part of a larger petrologic province composed of volcanic centers in a belt nearly 2,000 km long roughly parallel to the Transantarctic Mountains. Two trends of magmatic differentiation are apparent. At depth the fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, and opaque oxide minerals, all of which are abundant as …

Stages In Corporate Stability And The Risks Of Corporate Failure, Richard C. Edwards Jun 1975

Stages In Corporate Stability And The Risks Of Corporate Failure, Richard C. Edwards

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Few would deny that the U.S. economy is today dominated by huge corporations. Much recent writing has proposed that these corporations form a stable and monopolistic (or oligopolistic) "core" around which a more competitive "peripheral" sector exists. Firms in the core are said to be "eternal," while firms in the periphery demonstrate the mortality and high turnover expected in competitive industries. In another context, Paul Baran and Paul Sweezy emphasized the permanence of big corporations when they noted:

The real capitalist today is not the individual businessman but the corporation. .. . The giant corporation of today is an engine …

Rbe-Dose Relations For Neutrons And Pions, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma May 1975

Rbe-Dose Relations For Neutrons And Pions, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma

Robert Katz Publications

RBE-Dose relations have been calculated from cellular radiosensitivity parameters and theoretical particle-energy spectra in tissue, of the secondary particles from neutron and negative pion irradiations. The theoretical results are compared with clinical and radiobiological data for normal tissue, tumors, and cells in culture. Formulae for calculation, cellular parameters, and the needed properties of equivalent “track-segment bombardments” are given, for several mammalian cells irradiated with pions and with neutrons of several energies.

Editors' Note To Biological Investigations In The Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas., Hugh H. Genoways, Robert J. Baker Apr 1975

Editors' Note To Biological Investigations In The Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas., Hugh H. Genoways, Robert J. Baker

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The Guadalupe Mountains National Park, which is located in TransPecos Texas between Carlsbad, New Mexico, and EI Paso, Texas, is one of the newest national parks being formed by the Congress in 1967. The Guadalupe Mountains and the associated Chihuahuan Desert included in the park represent a unique biological area in which a fragile biological equilibrium exists between the fauna and flora of the Chihuahuan Desert of the lowlands and the Rocky Mountains of the high elevations. The preservation of this area will depend upon sound management decisions. This volume is the result of a symposium held at The Museum …

Research In National Parks, Robert J. Baker, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

This was our first involvement with research in the National Parks and we would like to make some observations concerning interactions among basic researchers, park personnel, and the philosophy on which our park systems are based. Our conclusions are not based only on our own experiences, but also on conversations with other basic researchers (especially those who contributed to this symposium) and with park personnel who have aided and worked with other researchers who were not employed by the National Park Service.
