The Psychology Of Recovery, Clayton K. Yeutter Mar 1975

The Psychology Of Recovery, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

Franklin Roosevelt said during the Great Depression, 11 The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." That may have seemed ironic to the man standing in line outside a soup kitchen at the time. But the statement was true; in the 1930's, we let fear drive us into some policies that worsened the Great Depression and made it longer and more far-reaching than might otherwise have been the case.

By the same token, our attitude toward the present recession can play an important role in getting us out of it. And nothing will do more for American agriculture …

Intermediates In The Biosynthesis Of Double-Stranded Ribonucleic Acids Of Bacteriophage Φ6, D. L. Coplin, James L. Van Etten, James A. Koski, A. K. Vidaver Mar 1975

Intermediates In The Biosynthesis Of Double-Stranded Ribonucleic Acids Of Bacteriophage Φ6, D. L. Coplin, James L. Van Etten, James A. Koski, A. K. Vidaver

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Pseudomonas phaseolicola infected with bacteriophage φ6 synthesized all three viral double-stranded RNA segments, three single-stranded RNAs, and three replicative intermediate-like RNAs in the presence of rifampin. The single-stranded RNA intermediates sedimented and electrophoresed along with melted viral double-stranded RNA, annealed with melted viral double-stranded RNA, and were transient in nature. The relative amounts of the single-stranded RNA intermediates varied during the infection cycle and were altered in the presence of chloramphenicol. The replicative intermediate-like RNAs sedimented faster than double-stranded RNA, failed to enter 2.5% polyacrylamide gels, eluted with double-stranded RNA from a CF-11 cellulose column, were precipitated with single-stranded RNA …

Recent Research Advances On The European Corn Borer In North America 1,2,3, T. A. Brindley, A. N. Sparks, W.B. Showers, W. D. Guthrie

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY

Distribution

The recorded distribution of the European corn borer, Osttinia nubilalis, has not changed significantly since Brindley & Dicke's review in 1963 (15), except along the southernmost portion of its range. Annual articles presenting the status of the European corn borer (3) indicate that each year the borer spreads into a few previously uninfested counties within known infested states. Sparks & Young (116) made a survey and found 34 of 35 counties infested in southern Georgia and concluded that the borer probably was present in all areas of extensive com production in Georgia. Light-trap records from Tifton, …

A New Kimballian Peccary From Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin Feb 1975

A New Kimballian Peccary From Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

A new species of Pliocene peccary, Prosthennops (Macrogens) graffhami; is described from the Kimball Formation, Ogallala Group, Frontier County, Nebraska. This new species is the latest in geologic age and most advanced in the genus.

The remains of fossil vertebrates are generally rare in the upper part of the Ogallala group, and some have maintained that Hemphillian faunas such as Coffee Ranch and Smith County, Kansas, represent the latest Ogallala faunas. Later faunas than are typically considered as Hemphillian, containing more advanced forms, occur in the Kimball Formation and deposits of equivalent age. Known faunas which may …

Bears (Ursidae) From The Late Cenozoic Of Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Larry D. Martin

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

A ramus and partial premaxilla establish the presence of a new subspecies of Indarctos in the upper Pliocene (Kimball Formation, Ogallala Group) of Frontier County, Nebraska. An extremely large species of Agriotherium is represented by fragmentary remains from the middle Pliocene (middle part of Ash Hollow Formation, Ogallala Group) of Sherman County, Nebraska.

This study is part of a series of papers dealing primarily with the fauna of the Kimball formation in Nebraska (Barbour 1927, 1929; Barbour and Schultz, 1941; Schultz and Stout, 1948, 1961; Kent 1963, 1967; Tanner, 1967; Short, 1969; Martin and Tate, 1970; Schultz, Schultz, and Martin, …

Physics Teaching and the Development of Reasoning: Workshop Materials

Most physics teachers think about their courses in terms of topics covered, concepts explained, and principles applied. Our effort in this workshop has been to call your attention to another impartant dimension of physics teaching: your students' patterns of reasoning. By this time, you have probably concluded that most physics courses are addressed primarily to students who can use formal reasoning patterns with ease, and we would agree with that. Yet there are also the students who use formal reasoning patterns only with difficulty and in limited areas. To help you analyze course content and present it in a way …

Herpesvirus Disease Of Salmonids, Ken Wolf, Tokuo Sano, Takahisa Kimura Jan 1975

Herpesvirus Disease Of Salmonids, Ken Wolf, Tokuo Sano, Takahisa Kimura

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

A newly recognized virus, lethal for fry and fingerlings, has been isolated from brood stock rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) at the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery, Washington. A similar if not identical virus has been found in natural epizootics occurring annually since 1970 among fry of landlocked sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) on Honshu Island, Japan. More recently, this agent was isolated from moribund and dead adult O. nerka on Hokkaido Island; Japan, but it remains to be determined whether or not the virus causes death in adult salmonids. The purpose of this leaflet is to bring the …

Gravitation

Calculus-Based General Physics

The members of the solar system -- the Sun, the Moon, and the planets -- have held a strong fascination for mankind since prehistoric times. The motions of these heavenly bodies were thought to have important specific influences on persons' lives -- a belief that is reflected even today in horoscopes and astrological publications. A revolution in man's thinking that occurred about four hundred years ago established the concept of a solar system with planets orbiting about the Sun and moons orbiting about some of the planets. Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton were the four scientific leaders chiefly responsible for …

Epidemiological Definition Of The Cohort Of Diseases Associated With Diabetes In Southwestern American Indians, Karl R. Reinhard Dvm, Naomi I. Greenwalt Jan 1975

Epidemiological Definition Of The Cohort Of Diseases Associated With Diabetes In Southwestern American Indians, Karl R. Reinhard Dvm, Naomi I. Greenwalt

United States Public Health Resources

A computerized health records system has facilitated an analysis of the correlated illness of a segment of population afflicted with a chronic disease. Taking the existence of clinical diabetes as a starting point, the total illness experience of 635 diabetics, as shown by clinic utilization data, has been compared with an age-sex-geographically matched control population.

The comparisons show that, overall, diabetics cause a caseload rate more than double that of nondiabetics. In 17 out of 22 broad health problem areas, the diagnosis caseload rates for diabetics varied from 1.3 to 3.7 times greater than the rate for matched, non-diabetic controls. …

Problems In Professional Responsibility, Barbara Allen Babcock Jan 1975

Problems In Professional Responsibility, Barbara Allen Babcock

Nebraska Law Review

This is a somewhat edited version of informal remarks on Watergate and professional ethics and responsibility delivered by Professor Babcock at the University of Nebraska College of Law in April 1975.

The Supreme Court Avoids Considering Sex-Based Classifications: Geduldig V. Aiello, 417 U.S. 484 (1974), Rebecca L. Ross

Nebraska Law Review

In Geduldig v. Aielo, the United States Supreme Court held that California's refusal to insure normal pregnancies in the state disability insurance program was not a violation of the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment. Over strong dissent, the Court held that California could take one step at a time in selecting the disabilities its insurance program would cover. Therefore, the statutory scheme did not involve a denial of equal protection and the district court was reversed. In this holding, the Court offered dicta which have sewn the seeds of confusion in the lower courts and left murkier …

!Kung Women: Contrasts In Sexual Egalitarianism In Foraging And Sedentary Contexts, Patricia Draper Jan 1975

!Kung Women: Contrasts In Sexual Egalitarianism In Foraging And Sedentary Contexts, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Most members of the Harvard !Kung Bushman Study Project who have thought about the subject of !Kung women's status agree that !Kung society may be the least sexist of any we have experienced. This impression contradicts some popularly held stereotypes about relations between the sexes in hunting and gathering societies. Because sex is one of the few bases for the differentiation of social and economic roles in societies of this type, it has probably been attributed more weight than it deserves. The men are commonly depicted in rather romantic terms, striving with their brothers to bring home the precious meat …

A Comparative Study Of Copulation In Passalidae (Coleoptera): New Positions For Beetles, Jack C. Schuster Jan 1975

A Comparative Study Of Copulation In Passalidae (Coleoptera): New Positions For Beetles, Jack C. Schuster

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Copulation, observed in 6 species of Passalidae, occurred with one beetle up-side-down in relation to the other. In Odontotaenius they were end to end (known for Coleoptera only in Scolytidae); in Passalus they were venter to venter facing nearly the same direction (known for no other beetles and only for certain Diptera and Mecoptera among other insects).

New Trends In Informed Consent?, Linda Babbitt Jaeckel

Nebraska Law Review

Four recent cases have been hailed as opening a new door to recovery by plaintiffs in medical malpractice cases brought on a theory of informed consent. The major impact of these four cases on the law of informed consent is twofold: first, the necessity of expert testimony in establishing the defendant-physician's duty of disclosure, and second, the standard to be applied in showing proximate cause. This Comment analyzes these cases to determine the effect both on plaintiffs and on the nature of informed consent litigation.

II. Development of the Doctrine of Informed Consent

Agriculture And Energy: A Legal Perspective, Doug C. Nelson Jan 1975

Agriculture And Energy: A Legal Perspective, Doug C. Nelson

Nebraska Law Review

During the latter part of 1973 and the early part of 1974 the United States experienced wide publicity given to a concept called the "energy crisis." The energy crisis caused and will continue to cause serious concern in agriculture, particularly with respect to petroleum and natural gas. Agricultural production is a sequence of interdependent energy-using activities, commencing with fertilizer manufacturing and continuing through delivery of food and fiber to consumers from processing plants. The interruption of energy flow during any time or segment of this agricultural system will restrain efficient production. Thus, the availability of petroleum and gas can affect …

Publicly Funded Transportation For Parochial School Students: New Issues, Roberta S. Stick Jan 1975

Publicly Funded Transportation For Parochial School Students: New Issues, Roberta S. Stick

Nebraska Law Review

America is "one nation under God." Yet, running contrary to this strain is our equally firm commitment to the concept of separation of church and state. This heritage reflects our founding fathers' fear of the dangers presented by church interference with state affairs and of the inhibiting effect state involvement would have on religious freedom. The first amendment to the Federal Constitution was written to afford protection from both of these evils, and the judiciary has staunchly upheld the concepts embodied in it. One manifestation of this had been the reluctance of the United States Supreme Court to permit the …

Module 6: Analysis Of Learning Materials, Francis P. Collea, Robert Fuller, Robert Karplus, Lester G. Paldy, John W. Renner

Physics Teaching and the Development of Reasoning: Workshop Materials

Module 6 continues with the application of the concept of developmental stages in your physics teaching. The module concentrates on the analysis of physics texts and film loops, which provide important instructional inputs for students. As you read the excerpts we have selected for your review, keep in mind the characteristics of concrete and formal thought explained in Module 2. Also, remember that all students, regardless of their developmental stage, will find the text easier and will understand a new topic in a more broadly-based way if they can progress gradually from a concrete view of the subject. Of course, …

Threatened Fishes Survey, Steve Schainost Jan 1975

Threatened Fishes Survey, Steve Schainost

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The advance of civilization frequently results in activities which cause changes in the native wildlife species. The economy of the state of Nebraska has submitted its streams to the effects of intensive agricultural and irrigation developments, stream channelization, and dams. The responses of different fish species to these different activities vary but they always occur and are usually unnoticed unless of large magnitude.

Relatively little has been done with regard to noting the responses of Nebraska’s stream fishes to the activities of man. Previous workers have frequently worked within a basin rather than statewide. Jordan and Meek (1885), Jordan and …

Fine Structure Of The Oocyst Walls Of Isospora Serini And Isospora Canaria And Excystation Of Isospora Serini From The Canary, Serinus Canarius L., Clarence A. Speer, Donald W. Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Oocysts of Isospora serini and Isospora canaria, from the canary Serinus canarius, were broken, added to a cell suspension, fixed in Karnovsky's fluid, and studied in the electron microscope. The oocyst wall of each species had an electron- lucent inner layer, a more osmiophilic middle layer and an outer layer of electron-lucent (I. serini) or electron-dense material interspersed with some electron-lucent material (I. canaria). A few, relatively large lipid-like bodies were present in the outer or middle layer of the oocyst wall of I. canaria. As many as 9 membranes were present in …

Taxonomy And Zoogeography Of Lemmus Spp. (Rodentia: Arvicolinae), With Notes On Laboratory-Reared Lemmings, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia R. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Lemmings of the genus Lemmus Link, 1795, have long attracted interest because of the high numerical densities attained at intervals by their populations. In earlier times, in northern Europe, such events seemed so remarkable as to be explained by some as a consequence of the animals' having fallen from the sky (HaGSTROM 1749). During the last 25 years, lemmings have been the object of intensive ecological investigation in Eurasia and North America, although there has been no consensus concerning their taxonomic relationships. In 1959, a colony of brown lemmings from arctic Alaska was established in our laboratory, primarily to provide …

Rabies In Experimentally Infected Bears, Ursus Spp., With Epizootiologic Notes, Robert L. Rausch Jan 1975

Rabies In Experimentally Infected Bears, Ursus Spp., With Epizootiologic Notes, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Ten black bears, Ursus americanus Pallas, and three brown bears, U. arctos Linnaeus, were inoculated with rabies virus from naturally infected foxes in Alaska. The bears were more resistant than canine species, requiring at least 1,000 MLD50 of virus for infection. Low titres or negative results were obtained in salivary glands titrated in mice. Clinical course of the disease, post mortem findings, and microscopic lesions are described. Microscopic lesions were more· severe in brown bears, in which the inflammatory response was distinguished by the presence of numerous eosinophils in the perivascular infiltrate and among cells diffusely infiltrating the parenchyma. …

The Effect Of Cyclic Differential Stress On Dilatancy In Westerly Granite Under Uniaxial And Triaxial Conditions, Mark D. Zoback, James D. Byerlee Jan 1975

The Effect Of Cyclic Differential Stress On Dilatancy In Westerly Granite Under Uniaxial And Triaxial Conditions, Mark D. Zoback, James D. Byerlee

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Laboratory experiments have been performed on samples of Westerly granite in which the differential stress was repeatedly cycled to 85% of the intact sample strength. The experiments have shown that under uniaxial conditions the onset of dilatancy is reduced to fairly low stress; however, under triaxial conditions dilatancy can be an apparently stable process, and the onset of dilatancy is not affected by the repeated cycling. Thus the implication for midcrustal earthquakes is that the onset of dilatancy repeatedly occurs at relatively high stress levels. For example, our results indicate that at typical focal depths of 2.5 and 10 km …

Digenetic Trematodes In Cephalopods, Robin M. Overstreet, F. G. Hochsberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In addition to listing digenetic trematodes found in cephalopods, we provide descriptions of adults of Derogenes varicus and larvae of Lecithochirium microstomum, Lecithochirium sp., Elytrophallus sp., Monilicaecum sp., and Stephanochasmus sp. Only the first had been described previously from cephalopods, and the last represents the first record of a nonpiscine second intermediate host for a species of Stephanochasmus. We found 15 species infected, which brings to nearly 30 the total number of squids, octopods, and cuttlefish reported to be infected with Digenea. Many early records of trematodes in cephalopods are actually reports of Monogenea, Cestoda, or reproductive organs …
