Birefringence Measurements Of The Uniaxial-Stress Dependence Of The Incommensurate Phase Transition In K2Seo4, D. P. Billesbach, F. G. Ullman, John R. Hardy
Birefringence Measurements Of The Uniaxial-Stress Dependence Of The Incommensurate Phase Transition In K2Seo4, D. P. Billesbach, F. G. Ullman, John R. Hardy
John R. Hardy Papers
The uniaxial-stress dependence of the incommensurate-phase-transition temperature (at 130 K) in K2SeO4 was measured along all three crystal axes by observation of the anomalies in the birefringence caused by the structure change. The results for the c-axis-stress dependence (- 17.0±0.2 K/kbar) agree with previous studies of other workers. This experiment has also provided the first direct measurements of the a-axis- and b-axis-stress dependences (+ 3.1 ±0.2 K/kbar and +7.7± 0.2 K/kbar, respectively). Also, a value of -6.2±0.3 K/kbar was calculated from these data for the dependence of the transition temperature on hydrostatic pressure. This …

A Rating Of Human Relations Competencies By Mechanized Agriculture Graduates, Harry L. Field
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Mechanized Agriculture/Agricultural Mechanization programs have been in existence since the early 1900's, but no researcher has attempted to determine the human relations competencies that are important for the graduates of these programs to possess. This dissertation attempted to remedy this situation by determining the importance level graduates placed on a list of 80 human relations competencies. The level of importance for the competencies was determined by analyzing the results of a questionnaire sent to 120 graduates of the University of Nebraska's Mechanized Agriculture program. The questionnaire included two demographic questions, one on job category and one on graduation period, and …

Thindown In Radiobiology, Robert Katz, D. E. Dunn, G. L. Sinclair
Robert Katz Publications
A new expression for the radial dose distribution, tested against available data, and yielding good agreement with enzyme and virus cross sections, is used to calculate cellular inactivation cross sections from track theory models and parameters. We use a cellular model and radiosensitivity parameters, fitted to HILAC data 15 years ago, to represent mammalian cells irradiated at the UNILAC. The observed branching with Z and the decline in cellular action cross sections with an increase in ion LET are attributed to thindown; that is, to the limits imposed by the maximum radial penetration of delta rays. Target size and structure …
Recovery Of Helminths From Prehistoric Feces: The Cultural Ecology Of Ancient Parasitism, Karl J. Reinhard
Recovery Of Helminths From Prehistoric Feces: The Cultural Ecology Of Ancient Parasitism, Karl J. Reinhard
Karl Reinhard Publications
Several helminth parasites have been recovered from archaeological sites on the Colorado Plateau. These include Ascaris, Trichuris, Enterobius, Moniliformis, and tapeworms in the families Hymenolepidae and Taeniidae. The recovery of these animals demonstrates that cross-temporal: comparison of parasitism between different prehistoric lifestyles is possible. Such comparison might elucidate the effects of changing lifestyle and subsistance pattern on human parasitism.
Desiccated feces recovered from archaelogical deposits were studied. Hunter-gatherer feces were selected from Dust Devil Cave in southeastern Utah. Agriculturalist feces were studied from Antelope House, a cave site in northeastern Arizona, and Salmon Ruins, a Pueblo …

Molecular bromine dissociatively adsorbs to form a chemisorbed overlayer on Ni(100). The bromine induced 4px,y and 4pz orbitals have been identified at Γ̅ with binding energies of 6.6 ± 0.2 eV and 5.3 ± 0.2 eV below the Fermi energy, respectively. The relative ionization cross-section variations of the two bromine levels 4px and 4pz are observed to differ with changing photon energy.

Social Behavior In Passalid Beetles (Coleoptera: Passalidae): Cooperative Brood Care, Jack C. Schuster, Laura B. Schuster
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
A brief summary is given concerning passalid social behavior in relation to their life cycle. Passalid pairs defend log tunnels and remain with off- spring from egg to adulthood. Parent-offspring cooperation involving care of other offspring is a step in the evolution of eusociality. Young adult passalids cooperated with their parents in repair of sibling pupal cases. Co- operative brood care between parents and juveniles has not been reported previously for non-Hymenopterous or non-Isopterous arthropods. The pres- ence of overlap of generations and cooperative brood care by at least temporarily non-reproductive adult individuals in certain passalid species suggest that we …

Male Effects On Fecundity In Drosophila Melanogaster, Ary A. Hoffman, Lawrence G. Harshman
Male Effects On Fecundity In Drosophila Melanogaster, Ary A. Hoffman, Lawrence G. Harshman
Lawrence G. Harshman Publications
Effects of male Drosophila melanogaster on female fecundity and productivity were examined, considering both females held in containers with males and females exposed to male effects not involving contact. Females were more fecund when male effects were present, and the largest increase was recorded when vials were previously conditioned by males. This effect was probably due to the growth of transmitted microorganisms, which were observed on the laying surface, as further experiments with vials conditioned by virgin females showed a similar increase in fecundity. A male-specific effect was isolated by conditioning bottles containing only agar with males and virgin females. …

Purpose: This is a working bibliography I have prepared to aid in a research project I am distributing a few copies because no comparable bibliography on technical intelligence is available.
Definition: I define technical intelligence as the effort to collect, process, and disseminate information about the characteristics of weapons and equipment used by the armed forces of other countries. I also include other activities of technical intelligence organizations of the armed forces like preparation of sanitary surveys by medical intelligence. According to my definition, technical intelligence in the US Army began when technical intelligence sections were set up in the …

“Desirous Of Improvements In Medicine": Pupils And Practitioners In The Medical Societies At Guy's And St. Bartholomews Hospitals, 1795–1815, Susan C. Lawrence
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Guy's Hospital Physical Society and St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical and Philosophical Society served important educational and professional functions in London between 1795 and 1815. They provided the opportunity for discussing everyday problems, sharing new discoveries and encouraging pupils to exploit fully their hospital experiences. They allowed hospital men to pontificate at times, but also to support the efforts of local practitioners and ambitious students. While not improving medicine in the sense of directing research or organizing clinical investigations, they did help medical men at all levels to think about their experiences before their observations were lost in the demands of …

The Unusual Pulsating Variable Xz Ceti, Terry J. Teays, Norman R. Simon
Norman R. Simon Papers
The peculiar pulsating variable XZ Ceti has a period of 0.8231 day, suggesting that it is a Bailey type ab RR Lyrae star, but it has a light curve shape and amplitude which is like that of the Bailey type c variables. Fourier decomposition analysis verifies that the parameters of its light curve match those of the type c variables, except for its unacceptably long period. We have obtained a new photometric light curve which verifies this long period. We have also obtained energy distributions from spectrum scans, which are used to derive a temperature and approximate surface gravity of …

Classification, Paleoecology, And Biostratigraphy Of Crinoids From The Stull Shale (Late Pennsylvanian) Of Nebraska, Kansas, And Iowa, Roger K. Pabian, Harrell L. Strimple
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
Thirteen species of crinoids representing the families Diphuicrinidae, catacrinidae, Pirasocrinidae, Erisocrinidae, Cromyocrinidae, Cymbiocrinidae, Scytalocrinidae, and Ampelocrinidae have been collected from the Stull Shale Member of the Kanwaka Formation in the Shawnee Group of the Virgil Series (Upper Pennsylvanian) from near Weeping Water and Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and near Pacific Junction, Iowa. Exposures of the Stull Shale near Melvern, Kansas, have yielded 14 species of crinoids representing the families Diphuicrinidae, Catacrinidae, Pirasocrinidae, Lophocrinidae Allagecrinidae, Cymbiocrinidae, Erisocrinidae, Apographiocrinidae, and Stellarocrinidae. All but two of the species present in the Stull Shale have been previously reported from other stratigraphic horizons, including the Vinland Shale …

A New Subspecies Of Inca Clathrata (Olivier) From Trinidad, West Indies, And Range Extensions For Inca Clathrata Sommeri Westwood (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Trichiinae), Julius Boos, Brett C. Ratcliffe
University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers
Inca clathrata quesneli is described as a new subspecies from Trinidad, West Indies. New distribution records are given for Inca clathrata sommeri Westwood that extend its range northward in Mexico by approximately 200 km and southward into Colombia and Ecuador in South America west of the Andes. A brief analysis of the historical biogeography of Inca clathrata (Olivier) suggests vicariance (Andean uplift) to explain the separation of the clathrata/sommeri subspecies lineage, and dispersal to explain the separation and isolation of the quesneli lineage on Trinidad and occurrence of sommeri in Mesoamerica.

Malone's suggestion of challenge, curiosity, and fantasy as the key aspects of instrinsic motivation for learning, based on his analyses of computer games, is used as a format for discussing four interactive videodisc lessons for general physics. The idea of challenging learning is expressed in the lessons based on the Physics and Automobile Collisions and Energy Tranformations Featuring the Bicycle videodiscs. Curiosity is especially evoked in the opening ballet scenes in the Studies In Motion videodisc. As part of a fantasy story line, students are asked to solve the puzzle of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse in a videodisc lesson …

Images Of German Immigrants In The United States And Brazil, 1890 - 1918: Some Comparisons, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
IN THE 18gos, following a decade of unprecedented immigration from Europe, the United States experienced a period in which national identity was greatly stressed. The term "Americanization" came into frequent usage as many citizens, privately and through various organizations, stressed conformity to the dominant culture in language, manners, and religious belief.
During these same years a similar development, in some respects stronger than in the United States, could be detected in Brazil. In 188g the empire of Brazil ended when Pedro II went into exile and Brazilian leaders introduced a republican form of government. During the preceding decade Brazil, like …

Sequence Relationships Among Soil-Borne Wheat Mosaic Virus Rna Species And Terminal Structures Of Rna Ii, Y. H. Hsu, M. K. Brakke
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Gel-separated RNAs of the wild-type (WT), Lab 1 and Lab 2 isolates of soil-borne wheat mosaic virus (SBWMV) were transferred to nitrocellulose filters and hybridized with specific cDNA. RNA I, but not RNA II, from all three SBWMV isolates hybridized to cDNA copied from SBWMV WT RNA I. RNA II from all three SBWMV isolates hybridized to cDNA copied from SBWMV WT RNA II, confirming the hypothesis that the Lab 1 and Lab 2 isolates arose by deletion of part of RNA II of WT virions. RNA I1 from SBWMV WT (0∙5L RNA) or from SBWMV Lab 1 (0.35L RNA) …
