Renovation Of Seeded Warm-Season Pastures With Atrazine, T. O. Dill, S. S. Waller, Kenneth P. Vogel, R. N. Gates, W. W. Stroup

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Numerous warm-season pastures have been established in the last 30 years in the central Great Plains. Some of these pastures are old enough to verify that they can be abused by overgrazing as easily as native tallgrass prairies. Overgrazed warm-season pastures are invaded and dominated by cool-season grasses such as smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss.) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), which diminishes the pasture productivity during the hot summer months. Since established warm-season grasses have greater tolerance to the herbicide atrazine than cool-season grasses, the effectiveness of atrazine applications in renovating invaded warm-season pastures was evaluated. Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) was purified to apparent homogeneity from postribosomal supernatants of rabbit reticulocytes by chromatography on DEAE-celiulose and phosphocellulose, fractionation by glycerol gradients, and chromatography on Mono S and Mono Q (Pharmacia). At the Mono S step GEF is isolated as a complex with the eukaryotic polypeptide chain initiation factor 2 (eIF-2) and is separated from this factor by column chromatography on Mono Q. An emission spectrum characteristic of a reduced pyridine dinucleotide was observed when GEF was subjected to fluorescence analysis. By both coupled enzymatic analysis and chromatography on reverse-phase or Mono Q columns, the …

Angular And Energy Dependence Of Cross Sections For Ejection Of Electrons From Water Vapor. I. 50-2000-Ev Electron Impact, M. A. Bolorizadeh, M. Eugene Rudd Jan 1986

Angular And Energy Dependence Of Cross Sections For Ejection Of Electrons From Water Vapor. I. 50-2000-Ev Electron Impact, M. A. Bolorizadeh, M. Eugene Rudd

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

We have measured the angular and energy distribution of the absolute cross sections for ejection of electrons from water vapor by electrons incident at 50-2000 eV. The angular range was 15° to 150° and the range of secondary electron energies was from 2 eV to an energy equal to the primary energy minus the first ionization potential. Electron energies were analyzed with a parallel-plate electrostatic analyzer with a resolution of 1.1%. Generally good agreement is obtained with the data of Opal et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 55, 4100 (1971)l at 500 eV except at the extremes of their angular range. …

The Influence Of Model Infant Group Care On Parent/Child Interaction At Home., Carolyn P. Edwards, Mary Ellin Logue, Sandra Loehr, Sanford Roth Jan 1986

The Influence Of Model Infant Group Care On Parent/Child Interaction At Home., Carolyn P. Edwards, Mary Ellin Logue, Sandra Loehr, Sanford Roth

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The effects of day care participation on parent-child interaction at home were assessed using a university-based, half-day, high-quality infant-toddler program. Hypotheses concerned whether "child-centered" features of the physical and social environment were carried over by parents to the home. Nineteen matched pairs of center and noncenter children (ages 2-24 months at start) were followed for 8 months. All had employed or student mothers. Methods included brief parent-reported "spot" observations, a videotaped observation of a bathing or feeding routine, and home environment assessments. Parents showed few group differences during the first half of the study period. At study end, however, center …

Cross‑Cultural Research On Kohlberg's Stages: The Basis For Consensus, Carolyn P. Edwards Jan 1986

Cross‑Cultural Research On Kohlberg's Stages: The Basis For Consensus, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Kohlberg’s stage theory has been met by many theoretical statements attempting to refute aspects of his conclusions or claims about cultural universality. Equally of importance, the theoretical controversy has stimulated much empirical research intended to test the cross-cultural claims. This chapter reviews the status and current progress of comparative studies of moral judgment and addresses the following three questions: Is the dilemma interview method a valid way of eliciting the moral judgments of people in other cultures? Is the standard scoring system appropriate and valid for cross-cultural use? Is cognitive-developmental theory useful for understanding psychological development in comparative cultural perspective? …

Drought Mitigation In Australia Reducing The Losses But Not Removing The Hazard, R. L. Heathcote Jan 1986

Drought Mitigation In Australia Reducing The Losses But Not Removing The Hazard, R. L. Heathcote

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In Australia technology has reduced but not eliminated the impact of drought and seems set to do the same for the foreseeable CO2-induced climate change. To document this claim, I wish here to consider first a brief history of drought in Australia-pointing up some parallels and contrasts with the North American experience; second, to outline the various strategies (technological and nontechnological) that have been adopted to try to mitigate drought; third, to review the current thinking on the effect of increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 on the Australian climate and their releva9ce to agricultural and pastoral activities through possible modification …

San Juan De La Cruz: "Percepción" Espiritual E Imagen Poética, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen Jan 1986

San Juan De La Cruz: "Percepción" Espiritual E Imagen Poética, Elizabeth Wilhelmsen

Review Of Faith According To Saint John Of The Cross, By Karol Wojtyla., Elizabeth Wilhelmsen Jan 1986

Review Of Faith According To Saint John Of The Cross, By Karol Wojtyla., Elizabeth Wilhelmsen

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

This work, though only recently published in English, was written in 1946-1948 us a doctoral dissertation. It was directed by the renowned Reginuld Garrigou-Lagrange, and presented at the Angelicum University in Rome. Originally composed in Latin, the work was speedily translated into several modern languages upon Wojtyla's election to the Papacy in 1978, and thus it is now available in English. The subject is the thought of St. John of the Cross, the sixteenth-century Spanish Carmelite known as reformer of his order, as mystic, as poet, and honored also as Mystical Doctor of the Church. Wojtyla thus traces “the nature …

Relationship Between Contents Of Leucoanthocyanidin And Dhurrin In Sorghum Leaves, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz Jan 1986

Relationship Between Contents Of Leucoanthocyanidin And Dhurrin In Sorghum Leaves, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Flag leaves of 'Colman' forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) contain at least 25 times as much leucoanthocyanidin (LAC) and approximately half as much of the cyanogenic glucoside, dhurrin, as do flag leaves of 'White Collier' forage sorghum. Assays of flag leaves from 119 F2 plants and 11 F, lines from crosses between these two cultivars revealed a statistically significant negative association between levels of LAC and dhurrin. Both LAC and dhurrin are aromatic compounds, and the negative association between the two may be the result of competition for intermediates or products of the aromatic biosynthetic pathway. This rationale appears …

Inheritance Of Dhurrin Content In Mature Sorghum Leaves, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins, K. P. Vogel Jan 1986

Inheritance Of Dhurrin Content In Mature Sorghum Leaves, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins, K. P. Vogel

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Seedlings of both KS8 and N32 sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] were high in dhurrin [p-hydroxy-(S)-mandelonitrile-β-D-glucoside] and thus in hydrocyanic acid potential (HCN-p), but the HCN-p of mature leaves from field-grown plants of KS8 was only about one-tenth as high as that of N32. A study of the inheritance of this large difference between KS8 and N32 revealed that a single major gene pair was responsible. There were no obvious maternal effects and F,'s were generally intermediate in HCN-p level between the two parents, indicating that neither high nor low HCN-p was completely dominant. HCN-p …

Pleistocene Phenacomys From Kansas With Remarks On Other Fossil Records, Larry D. Martin, Wighart Von Koenigswald, J. D. Stewart

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Phenacomys occurs in the Middle and Late Pleistocene of Kansas. It cannot be derived from any known Pliophenacomys and is now thought by us to be an Early Irvingtonian immigrant to North America. "Pliomys" deeringensis is a Phenacomys, and there is no record of Pliomys ever having occurred in North America.

Fourier Decomposition Of Rr Lyrae Pulsations: Theory Versus Observations, Norman R. Simon Dec 1985

Fourier Decomposition Of Rr Lyrae Pulsations: Theory Versus Observations, Norman R. Simon

Norman R. Simon Papers

Fourier decomposition is employed to compare the light curves of RR Lyrae stars with those emerging from hydrodynamic models. Very good agreement is obtained between theory and observation for the RRc stars, but in the case of the RRab stars there are significant discrepancies in the Fourier phase quantities ϕ21 and ϕ31The deficiencies of the models are not remedied by replacing Carson opacities with Los Alamos opacities, nor by including dynamic zoning in the hydrogen ionization region. We also Fourier analyze the theoretical velocity curves to determine R21, ϕ21, and ϕ …

Aggressive Behavior Of Mississippi Kites In Suburban Areas, Berkeley R. Peterson, Charles S. Brown

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

The Mississippi Kite is a small diurnal bird of prey which nests throughout the southern Great Plains Its aggressive behavior during nesting has created problems for residents in suburban areas. The removal of the nest and relocation of the eggs and young will end the attacks by the parent birds. The eggs are incubated and the resulting young, as well as other young removed from problem nests, are then placed in foster nests in more remote areas. Preliminary results indicated this will be a very successful way of dealing with the young of problem kites and is an effective way …

Deer Damage Prevention Efforts In Pennsylvania, Jack M. Payee, William L. Palmer

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Research at the Pennsylvania State University was directed towards finding effective repellents to control damage caused by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and to develop a low-cost alternative to the traditional 2.4 m woven wire barrier fence, considered to be deer-proof, but too expensive for mgt agricultural uses. Fourteen repellents were screened and 9 were found to be more effective than the others. These 9 repellents were further investigated under semi-field conditions and only 1 repellent was found to be consistent in reducing deer feeding. A vertical electric deer fence was effective in excluding deer at field sites containing alfalfa, small …

Reported Beaver Damage And Control Methods Used In Texas, Jan E. Loven

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Beaver have greatly increased their range in Texas due to restocking and construction of man-made water impoundments. Damages can generally be categorized into dike and impoundment damage, tree damage, and flooding or other damages. These total $9,326,541 for the fiscal years 1983, 1984, and 1985. Methods used to remove beaver include: conibear traps, leg-hold traps, snares, spotlighting, and technical consultation. Live traps are seldom used. Total number of beaver taken for fiscal years 1983, 1984 and 1985 is 5,158.
