To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Part of the process of learning involves the making of models to guide action. A good model explains what has happened, communicates what is happening, and predicts what will happen. It serves as a schema for thinking about the world and how we interact with it. This can be freeing because a useful model points to new directions which are logical outgrowths of the current situation, but it can also be restricting if we come to believe that the model represents "truth" in capital letters and neon lights.

Copyright And The First Amendment: Nurturing The Seeds For Harvest: Harper & Row, Publishers V. Nation Enterprises, 105 S. Ct. 2218 (1985), Greg A. Perry
Nebraska Law Review
In Harper & Row, Publishers v. The Nation Enterprises, the Supreme Court was presented questions concerning the interplay of copyright and the first amendment—whether the first amendment requires that the scope of copyright protection for a nonfiction work be narrowed, and whether the first amendment should prevail over copyright in a fair use case in which the copyrighted material is politically significant. This article focuses upon the potential tensions that exist between copyright and the first amendment, and the arguments for a "public interest" or first amendment exception to the proprietary rights of a copyright holder. In particular, this …
Rural Social Organization In A Semiarid African Country The Case Of Botswana, Louise Formann
Rural Social Organization In A Semiarid African Country The Case Of Botswana, Louise Formann
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Environmental determinism has long been discredited in explaining the social organization of pastoral and agro-pastoral peoples. I Today the effect of climate on social organization is recognized as mediated by social, economic, and political factors. 2 Thus, social organization in Botswana reflects the influence of a wide variety of factors, among them Christian missionaries, interethnic warfare, past and continuing aggression of South Africa, introduction of the iron plow, British colonialism, Boer traders, discovery of minerals (most recently diamonds), international donor aid, and so on. Over the past century there have been substantial changes in a number of important trends: life …
State V. Groves: The Disorderly Conduct Of Overbreadth Analysis In Nebraska, Matthew P. Millea
State V. Groves: The Disorderly Conduct Of Overbreadth Analysis In Nebraska, Matthew P. Millea
Nebraska Law Review
This article demonstrates that rather than misapplying overbreadth analysis, the court in State v. Groves did not apply it at all. It suggests that courts should require that legislatures articulate the goals they seek when they regulate speech based on its content combined with the time, place, and manner in which the speech is delivered. Finally, the article argues that few, if any, disorderly conduct laws are necessary or desirable, and that these statutes are not constitutional either in intent or application.

Effective Ideation In Written Text: A Functional Approach To Clarity And Exigence, Barbara Couture
Effective Ideation In Written Text: A Functional Approach To Clarity And Exigence, Barbara Couture
Department of English: Faculty Publications
As scholars and writers, we no doubt have more than once uttered 'I tried to write that piece today, but I didn't have any good ideas.' And oddly enough that lament often follows tireless sessions when we have generated lots and lots of ideas on paper, but none we regard as 'good.' Though the problem of distinguishing a 'good' idea in writing has plagued generations of writers and many more readers, scholars have not yet produced a FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION of the written communication of a valued idea.
In my view, a functional description of effective ideation in written text should …

Bridging Epistemologies And Methodologies: Research In Written Language Function, Barbara Couture
Department of English: Faculty Publications
This book is about written language functions and about written language research. The essays here are united in their investigation of language as social action-an approach to textual study that crosses traditional boundaries of discipline and method to uncover what written language is, how it works, how it affects readers, and what it demands of authors.
The functional approaches to written text presented here are most closely related to the work of scholars from the so-called London School of Linguistics as reinterpreted in the systemic linguistics of Michael Halliday and his followers. The London School challenged investigations of language in …

Entomology Papers from Other Sources
In the past, farmers in tropical Asia grew traditional rice cultivars and either relied primarily on cultural, mechanical, and physical methods of pest control or practiced no pest control. Pesticide application was limited because the yield potential of traditional varieties was too low to justify additional investments. Although pests destroyed part of each crop, severe outbreaks or epidemics were rare.
The widespread introduction of high-yielding rice cultivars in Asia in the last two decades and the associated changes in production practices have improved conditions for insects, diseases, weeds, and rodents. The higher yield potential of the new rices also made …

Protecting The Real Estate Consumer: Traditional Theories Of Liability Revisited, And A Look At Nebraska's Proposed Real Estate Consumers Protection Act, Rose Mcconnell
Nebraska Law Review
This article reviews the role the real estate broker plays in a typical residential real estate transaction, discusses how statutory guidelines and common-law theories of liability have served to protect the real estate consumer, and analyzes Nebraska's Real Estate Consumer Protection Act to see what new protections are available to the real estate consumer. It is the thesis of this article that traditional theories of liability and statutory regulation have provided insufficient protection for the residential real estate consumer, and that a real estate consumers protection act is an appropriate vehicle for providing additional protection.

Proliferative Kidney Disease In Salmonid Fishes, R. P. Hendrick, M. L. Kent, C. E. Smith
Proliferative Kidney Disease In Salmonid Fishes, R. P. Hendrick, M. L. Kent, C. E. Smith
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in salmonid fishes is caused by a poorly understood protozoan, the vegetative stages of which are known as PKX cells. The organism was initially believed to be an amoeba (phylum Sarcomastigophora) by Plehn (1924) and later by Ghittino et al. (1977) and Ferguson and Needham (1978). Similarities between PKX and oyster pathogens of the genus Marteilia led Seagrave et al. (1980) to suspect that the parasite was instead a haplosporidan (phylum Acetospora). More recent studies by Hedrick et al. (1984) and Kent and Hedrick (1985a,b) indicated that the PKX cells are pre sporogonic forms …
Channel Catfish Virus Disease, John A. Plumb
Channel Catfish Virus Disease, John A. Plumb
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Channel catfish virus disease (CCVD) is an acute infection of cultured fry and fingerling channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). The disease occurs primarily during summer and, with few exceptions, in fish less than 4 months old. The causative agent, the channel catfish virus (CCV), is a member of the herpesvirus group. Since its first identification (Fijan 1968), it has been isolated from infected fish in most areas of the United States where channel catfish are cultured.

Production Of Shiga-Like Toxin By Escherichia Coli, Lilian R. M. Marques, Marjorie A. Moore, Joy G. Wells, I. Kate Wachsmuth, Alison D. O'Brien
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Escherichia coli is one of several agents that cause intestinal disease in humans and animals. Four classes of E. coli have been recognized [1], Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) strains produce a heat-labile (LT) enterotoxin and/or a heat-stable( ST) enterotoxin. Enteroinvasive E . coli (EIEC) strains, like shigellae, penetrate and multiply within epithelial cells. Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) strains belong to certain serogroups that have been incriminated as pathogens by epidemiological studies. Some EPEC strains have been shown to adhere to cells of the intestinal mucosa and to produce pathognomonic lesions at the site of attachment. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) strains …
Genetic Improvement For Milk And Meat Production In The Tropics, N. Künzi, W. Kropf
Genetic Improvement For Milk And Meat Production In The Tropics, N. Künzi, W. Kropf
World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production: 3rd (1986)
Theoretical and practical ways to improve meat and milk production in the tropics by selection within local Bos indicus breeds, within Bos taurus x Bos indicus composite populations, upgrading of Bos indicus with Bos taurus breeds and though different crossbreeding programs have been discussed by various authors and summarized by Mason and Buvanendran (1982), Gregory et al. (1982) and Hickman (1979). Only few publications (Auriol, 1984; Chacko et al., 1985; Donegan and Roberts, 1984) exist on successful programs but numerous reports in developing agencies (FAO, 1985; SDC, 1985) indicate that many possibilities have been exploited and that various …
Another Style Of Competence: The Caregiving Child, Carolyn P. Edwards
Another Style Of Competence: The Caregiving Child, Carolyn P. Edwards
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This chapter discusses child and sibling caregiving as an opportunity for the learning of nurturance and responsibility. The argument is based on case examples from ethnographic material, that children in multiage dyads or groupings negotiate constantly with one another and thereby reveal their reasoning about rational and conventional moral rules. The observational material is drawn from the work of Carol R. Ember (1970, 1973) who studied children in a Luo community of about 250 people in the South Nyanza district of Kenya. This community, referred to as Oyugis (actually the name of the market town 2.5 miles away, is one …

Recovery Of Parasite Remains From Coprolites And Latrines: Aspects Of Paleoparasitological Technique, Karl J. Reinhard, Ulisses E. Confalonieri, Bernd Herrmann, Luiz F. Ferreira, Adauto J. G. De Araujo
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Standard techniques for the analysis of prehistoric soils have not been devised. It is unlikely that any single technique is applicable to all types of fecal remains. This is due to various environmental conditions which effect the preservation of helminth ova. In general, gravitational sedimentation is a useful technique for isolating helminth eggs and larvae from coprolites. Latrine soils pose greater problems for helminthological examination. Although various clinical techniques have been successfully utilized in soil study, it is important to remember that some latrine soils have not yielded helminth eggs to any clinical technique. Consequently the paleoparasitologist must be ready …
Sexism In Space: The Freudian Formula In "Star Trek", Mary Jo Deegan
Sexism In Space: The Freudian Formula In "Star Trek", Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
These words, spoken at the beginning of each televised "Star Trek" episode, set the stage for the fantastic future. Although the "Star Trek" series was cancelled in 1969 after only three years of production, it generated a large cult following that flourishes still today. One reason for the series' remarkable longevity is its depiction of the future as a Freudian fantasy. This Freudian vision draws on cultural myths embedded in the patriarchal dominance of men over women characteristic of Western civilization.
According to Freud, both sexes are driven by three instincts --- sex, aggression, and the death wish---but men have …
Founders And Presidents Of The Nebraska Academy Of Sciences, 1880-1986, C. Bertrand Schultz
Founders And Presidents Of The Nebraska Academy Of Sciences, 1880-1986, C. Bertrand Schultz
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The Nebraska Academy of Sciences is the oldest interdisciplinary scientific organization in Nebraska and one of the oldest and most successful state academies in the United States. It was founded in Omaha on January 30, 1880, and there were seventy-five Charter Members from eighteen communities.
The Union Pacific Railroad officials and employees provided much of the impetus for the establishment of an Academy of Sciences in Nebraska by providing office space and meeting rooms near the Union Pacific headquarters. Railroad passes were issued to all science teachers, professional scientists, and interested citizens to attend monthly meetings. Five of the officers …
Formation Of Influenza Virus Particles Lacking Hemagglutinin On The Viral Envelope, Asit K. Pattnaik, Donald J. Brown, Debi P. Nayak
Formation Of Influenza Virus Particles Lacking Hemagglutinin On The Viral Envelope, Asit K. Pattnaik, Donald J. Brown, Debi P. Nayak
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
We investigated the intraceUular block in the transport of hemagglutinin (HA) and the role of HA in virus particle formation by using temperature-sensitive (Is) mutants (1s134 and 1s61S) of inOuenza virus AlWSN/33. We found that at the nonpermissive temperature (39.5°C), the exit of ts HA from the rough endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi complex was blocked and that no additional block was apparent in either the exit from the Golgi complex or post-Golgi complex transport. When MDBK ceUs were infected with these mutant viruses, they produced noninfectious virus particles at 39.5°C. The efficiency of particle formation at 39.5°C was essentiaUy …

Intercontinental Simultaneous Survey Of The Unique Cepheid Hr 7308 In Photometry And Radial Velocity, Gilbert Burki, Edward G. Schmidt, Armando Arellano Ferro, J.D. Fernie, Dimitar Sasselov, Norman R. Simon, John R. Percy, Laszlo Szabados
Norman R. Simon Papers
A simultaneous monitoring in photometry and radial velocity was organized in August 1984 on the unique Cepheid HR 7308 (V473 Lyr). The data were obtained by using ten telescopes located in six different countries in Europe and North America.
Three different versions of the Baade-Wesselink method have been applied and the results (50 ± 15 Rʘ , 41 ± 11 Rʘ , 32 ± 10 Rʘ ) are in favor of a mean radius larger than 30 Rʘ . The photometric analysis confirms that the star has a normal solar abundance.
HR 7308 is most probably …

Transposon Mutagenesis And Excision Of R' Plasmids By Conjugative, Chimeric Plasmid Puw942 In Extra-Slow-Growing Rhizobium Japonicum Strains, Alahari Arunakumari, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Transposons Tn501 (specifying mercury resistance) and Tn7 (specifying resistance to trimethoprim and streptomycin) were introduced into extra-slow-growing Rhizobium japonicum by conjugal transfer of the 82 kilobase chimeric plasmid pUW942. Mercury-resistant transconjugants were obtained at a frequency of 10-7 to 10-9. The transfer frequency of streptomycin resistance was lower than that of mercury resistance, and Tn7 was relatively unstable. pUW942 was not maintained as an autonomously replicating plasmid in R. japonicum strains. However, some of the Hgr transconjugants from the RJ19FY, RJ17W, and RJ12S strains acquired antibiotic markers of the vector plasmid pUW942. Southern hybridization of plasmid …
