Evaluation Of Beef Cattle Industry Breeding Programs, Keith Hammond Jan 1986

Evaluation Of Beef Cattle Industry Breeding Programs, Keith Hammond

World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production: 3rd (1986)

A critical evaluation of existing beef cattle breeding programs should include such criteria as: definition of desired genetic changes in performance, breeding value estimation procedures used and accuracy of selection criteria, intensity of selection applied, use of additive differences between breeds and of non-additive variation, maintenance of genetic variability, realised genetic trends and return on investment. Each major production- marketing environment should be treated and correct account take of the industry structure. Such a study would undoubtedly highlight any inadequacies in the essential information. To extend the study to adequately cover all major beef industries would be an enormous task. …

Evaluation Of Dairy Cattle Breeding Programs: Specialized Milk Production, L. D. Van Vleck Jan 1986

Evaluation Of Dairy Cattle Breeding Programs: Specialized Milk Production, L. D. Van Vleck

World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production: 3rd (1986)

Milk recording, artificial insemination and computers have given the dairy cattle industry and effective combination of tools for genetic improvement. Selection theory (Robertson and Rendel, 1950) indicates that annual gains of 1.5 to 2.0% of the mean should be possible.

The dairy industry is also fortunate that one trait, milk production (used as a general term for yield of milk, fat and protein), is of primary importance. Another advantage is that no intermediate optimum for milk production is obvious--more and more seems to be profitable--in contrast to the situation for most traits of most livestock.

With these advantages for making …

G86-790 Fumigating Farm-Stored Grain With Aluminum Phosphide (Revised May 1998), Clyde Ogg, David L. Keith Jan 1986

G86-790 Fumigating Farm-Stored Grain With Aluminum Phosphide (Revised May 1998), Clyde Ogg, David L. Keith

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide provides step-by-step instructions for fumigating stored grain on the farm with aluminum phosphide.

Fumigants act on all insect life stages. They control pests by diffusing through the air spaces between grain kernels as well as into the kernel itself. Fumigants are able to penetrate into places that are inaccessible to insecticide sprays or dusts.

Regardless of formulation, all fumigants are poisonous and toxic to humans and other warm-blooded animals as well as to insects and other pests. Because fumigant chemicals are highly toxic and hazardous to use, they are Restricted Use pesticides. They can only be used by …

Heg86-210 Being A 'Grand' Parent, Herbert G. Lingren Jan 1986

Heg86-210 Being A 'Grand' Parent, Herbert G. Lingren

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This guide explores grandparenting, including the benefits derived from being a grandparent, suggestions on how to be a good grandparent, precautions to take when grandchildren come for a visit, and ways to have fun with grandchildren.

Grandparents Today

Approximately 75 percent of Americans over 65 have living grandchildren, according to a 1975 Harris poll. Most grandparents begin their role during middle age. The average age for becoming a grandmother is 46 and may be as early as 32. This means we need to set aside many outdated ideas about grandparent. They are active people. They do not necessarily get around …

Columnaris Disease Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock, T. C. Hsu, E. B. Shotts Jr. Jan 1986

Columnaris Disease Of Fishes, G. L. Bullock, T. C. Hsu, E. B. Shotts Jr.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Columnaris disease is an acute to chronic bacterial infection that affects anadromous salmonids and virtually all species of warmwater fishes. Davis (1922), who first described the disease, named it columnaris because the causal bacterial cells seen in wet mounts of affected gills and fins were arranged in columnar aggregations. Ordal and Rucker (1944) were the first to isolate the causal organism and, based on cellular morphology, identified it as a myxobacterium. Organisms classified in the order Myxobacterales are long, thin gram-negative rods that are motile on agar media by a creeping or flexing motion. They have a life cycle composed …

Ectoparasitism As A Cost Of Coloniality In Cliff Swallows (Hirundo Pyrrhonota), Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown Jan 1986

Ectoparasitism As A Cost Of Coloniality In Cliff Swallows (Hirundo Pyrrhonota), Charles R. Brown, Mary Bomberger Brown

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Colonially nesting Cliff Swallows (Passeriformes: Hirundo pyrrhonota) in southwestern
Nebraska, USA, are commonly parasitized by hematophagous swallow bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae:
Oeciacus vicarius) and fleas (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae: Ceratophyllus celsus). We examined to
what degree these ectoparasites represent a cost of coloniality for Cliff Swallows. The number of
swallow bugs per nest increased significantly with Cliff Swallow colony size. Body mass of nestling
swallows at 10 d of age declined significantly as the number of bugs per nestling increased. By fumigating
half of the nests in some colonies, killing the bugs, and leaving half of the nests as nonfumigated …

Diatom Stratigraphy Of The Lower Pliocene Part Of The Sisquoc Formation, Harris Grade Section, California, John A. Barron, Jack G. Baldau Jan 1986

Diatom Stratigraphy Of The Lower Pliocene Part Of The Sisquoc Formation, Harris Grade Section, California, John A. Barron, Jack G. Baldau

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Lower Pliocene diatoms were studied from the Sisquoc Formation and lowermost Foxen Mudstone, exposed along Hams Grade north of Lompoc, California, to refine the diatom biostratigraphy of post-Monterey Formation sediments in California. Sixty-seven diatom taxa were identified in the 25 samples examined from the 790-m thick (2950-ft) section. The diatoms are assignable to the uppermost Nitzschia reinholdii Zone and Thalassiosira oestrupii Zone of Damn (1981), and five tentative subzones for local correlation are proposed. Regional correlations and taxon occurrence are discussed, and the base of the Nitzschia reinholdii Zone is redefined as at the last occurrence of Thalassionema schraderi.

Convection In The Oceanic Crust' Simulationo F Observationsf Rom Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 504b, Costa Rica Rift, Colin F. Williams, T. N. Narasimhan, Roger N. Anderson, Mark D. Zoback, Keir Becker

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Three-dimensional modeling of convection in the oceanic crust at Deep Sea Drilling Project site 504B using an integral finite difference model reasonably duplicates underpressures, surface heat flow, downhole temperature profiles, and fluid drawdown rates observed by in situ measurements in the borehole. The major constraint to produce such good fits is the permeability versus depth function,a quantity which was actually measured in the borehole. Pronounced "underpressuring" (fluid pressures less than hydrostatic) occurs throughout the convection cell if and only if a tight, nearly impermeable cap rock (chert) exists over the cell. The computed flow rates of water from the ocean …

Kinetic Analysis: Benzo (A) Pyrene In Southeastern Ohio, D. Kolbow, H. Hikichi, C. Tuthill, C. W. Frank, G. B. Wiersma, A. B. Crockett, R. D. Schonbrod

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Kinetic Analysis has been successful for metallic elements in relatively isolated areas. In this study it is applied to a complex organic compound in a geographical area with a large urban component. Ten media compartments are included, with man as the ultimate receptor. Field data were collected for only 6 of the media and were not used in the analysis but were compared to the calculated steady state concentrations. The greatest differences between calculated and observed values were 4.8-fold for soil and 5.4-fold for sediment. The field sampling regime for soils was biased towards areas of industrialization and probably explains …

Results And Interpretations From A Survey On Agriculturally Related Weather Information, A. Weiss, J. G. Robb Jan 1986

Results And Interpretations From A Survey On Agriculturally Related Weather Information, A. Weiss, J. G. Robb

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

A survey of “top” wheat farmers in 12 counties in western Nebraska was undertaken to help guide future research and extension programs (in agricultural meteorology and economics) in the region. One hundred forty-two farmers (59 percent of those receiving questionnaires) responded to the survey. Of the respondents, 42 percent own or are considering purchasing a personal computer; the vast majority of farmers own a rain gage and some form of temperature-measuring device; the respondents were moderately familiar with an existing Automated Weather Data Network in Nebraska; commercial and NOAA weather radio and commercial television are the main sources of weather …

Small Business And Economic Development For Nebraska, Bruce A. Kirchhoff Jan 1986

Small Business And Economic Development For Nebraska, Bruce A. Kirchhoff

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

Economic theory and research data suggest that Nebraska policymakers should redirect economic development efforts toward the formation and growth of small businesses. A mechanism is presented for categorizing small businesses into sectors which are most likely to provide the economic growth so necessary to the state. Recommendations for implementing a search and screening process to identify businesses with high-growth potential in the state are discussed. Finally, recommendations for changing policies and programs to increase the formation and growth of small businesses in Nebraska are presented.

Economic Selection Indices For Lean Meat Production In Sheep, G. Simm Jan 1986

Economic Selection Indices For Lean Meat Production In Sheep, G. Simm

World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production: 3rd (1986)

Economic selection indices were derived for terminal sire sheep breeds or strains, using physical and financial results from New Zealand export lamb-producing flocks. The aggregate breeding value comprised carcass lean weight and carcass total fat weight. Index measurements were live weight, ultrasonic fat depth and ultrasonic muscle depth. Economic values of lean weight and fat weight were estimated to be NZ $5. 07 and NZ $-3.72 per kg, respectively. The s.d. of the aggregate breeding value was NZ $3.20 and the correlation between the full index and the aggregate breeding value was 0.23. The expected economic response to selection on …

Costs And Benefits Of Breed Utilization Strategies In Sheep, William D. Hohenboken Jan 1986

Costs And Benefits Of Breed Utilization Strategies In Sheep, William D. Hohenboken

World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production: 3rd (1986)

Problems involved in choosing appropriate criteria and procedured for economic analyses of breed and mating system evaluation experiments in sheep are described. Literature is reviewed of experiments in which biological or economic efficiency has been investigated. The range in relative economic merit from the poorest to the best group in an experiment typically is from 100 to 120, with values over 140 not uncommon for the best group in an experiment. Heterosis for exonomic traits per ewe mated has ranged from 2% to 26%. Suggestions are presented for consideration in future studies on the economic ramifications of mating system and …

Nebraska's Economic Structure, Charles L. Bare, Jerome A. Deichert, Donald E. Pursell Jan 1986

Nebraska's Economic Structure, Charles L. Bare, Jerome A. Deichert, Donald E. Pursell

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

Nebraska's economy is in transition from a goods producing economy to a service producing economy. In a sense, this economic transition is a well established megatrend more than 100 years in the making, that has intensified during the last 5 years. From the mid- 1960s to 1979, the rate of growth in nonagricultural employment and income in Nebraska nearly matched that of the nation. Nebraskans must recognize that their economy is influenced largely by external forces, for example, national farm policy and monetary policy. Nebraskans should pursue policies that recognize the transition in the economy and direct state efforts toward …

Child Poverty And Child Welfare In Nebraska, Ann Coyne, Herb Grandbois Jan 1986

Child Poverty And Child Welfare In Nebraska, Ann Coyne, Herb Grandbois

Center for Public Affairs Research (UNO): Publications

Children represent the fastest growing group of poor people in the United States today. An increase in the number of children living with one parent, an increase in unwed teenage pregnancy, a lack of child support, lower wages and benefits for women than for men, the cost of child care, and unemployment and underemployment in two-parent families contribute to child poverty. Policy options ranging from changing eligibility requirements for assistance programs to establishing state funded health insurance programs are presented. Methods of responding to abused and neglected children have changed dramatically. The effect of PI 96-272 on the child welfare …

Adam Bede And Riehl's "Social-Political-Conservatism", A.G. Van Den Broek Jan 1986

Adam Bede And Riehl's "Social-Political-Conservatism", A.G. Van Den Broek

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

George Eliot's Adam Bede is seen frequently to be a good, but flawed novel, an interesting precursor to the much finer Middlemarch and other later novels. U. C. Knoepflmacher, in George Eliot's Early Novels: The Limits of Realism, considers that, essentially, Eliot shared John MiIton's purpose of justifying "Man's lot in the temporal world." Knoepflmacher adds: "Her own belief in scientific veracity did not allow her to create a supernatural world of essences; yet in her way she shared Milton's purpose. 11 But then he says:

The epic strain that was to find its most complex embodiment in Middlemarch is …

River Conservancy And Agricultural Development Of The North China Plain And Loess Highlands Strategies And Research, Huang Bingwei Jan 1986

River Conservancy And Agricultural Development Of The North China Plain And Loess Highlands Strategies And Research, Huang Bingwei

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The North China Plain is the Chinese counterpart to the North American Great Plains. This largest plain in China suffers frequently from drought. Although agricultural production has been significantly increased in recent years, it is still far too low and too unstable to compensate for population growth and the demands of a rising standard of living. One of the major factors limiting agricultural development on the North China Plain is drought. A complication is that not only have surface and underground water resources been utilized almost to their limits for agrarian needs but also water shortages due to rapidly mounting …

Ritual Pageantry In The American West A Wyoming Case Study, Audrey C. Shalinsky Jan 1986

Ritual Pageantry In The American West A Wyoming Case Study, Audrey C. Shalinsky

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Festivals that celebrate the founding of the town or a similar historical event of local or regional significance are common throughout the United States. In this paper I analyze the annual reenactment in Thermopolis, Wyoming, of the Shoshoni tribe's cession to the whites of control over several thermal springs, an event that led to the founding of the town. I show that the reenactment is an idealized interpretation of various historical events recorded and portrayed in poetic form by a group of townspeople with the limited participation of a few Shoshoni families from Wind River Reservation. I argue that the …
