Germ Weight, Germ Oil Content, And Estimated Oil Yield For Wet-Milled Yellow Dent Corn As Affected By Moisture Content At Harvest And Temperature Of Drying Air, Curtis L. Weller, Marvin R. Paulsen, Stephen Mbuvi Jan 1989

Germ Weight, Germ Oil Content, And Estimated Oil Yield For Wet-Milled Yellow Dent Corn As Affected By Moisture Content At Harvest And Temperature Of Drying Air, Curtis L. Weller, Marvin R. Paulsen, Stephen Mbuvi

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

A split-plot experimental design was used to determine the effect of moisture content at harvest and temperature of drying air on weight, oil content, and estimated oil yield of corn germs recovered from laboratory wet milling. The effects were determined for a high-yielding hybrid of yellow dent corn widely grown in the corn belt that was hand-picked and hand-shelled. Germ oil content decreased significantly as moisture content at harvest and temperature of drying air increased. Germ weight and estimated oil yield generally decreased as both moisture content at harvest and temperature of drying air increased from 17.2 to 29.6% and …

Omaha Language Preservation In The Macy, Nebraska Public School, Catherine Rudin

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

A native language renewal program at the Macy, Nebraska Public School is described that is designed to preserve Omaha, a native American Indian language that is only a generation away from extinction. At the time of this research, only about 100 fluent Omaha speakers lived on the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska. The language and culture program, instituted in 1970, has employed various instruction techniques and methodologies, including immersion, memorization of words and phrases, and publication of student-authored stories in English and Omaha. The program has suffered from a lack of consistency; frequent changes in funding, personnel, and curriculum; and a …

How, Twenty Years Ago, The George Eliot Fellowship Found Gabriel Woolf, Gabriel Woolf

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

Starting a new friendship is often a very chanoey business and none more so than the friendship which developed between The George Eliot Fellowship and one of its staunchest supporters, Gabriel Woolf. Gabriel's recent 20th visit to Warwickshire to present his ann\J.al programme of Readings has reminded us how much of a fluke our finding him really was.

In 1969 the Fellowship planned to mark the 150th anniversary of George Eliot's birth with a week of celebrations in Nuneaton. We were then a very small society with a very inexperienced committee but, nothing daunted, we hoped to put the George …

Review Of Among The Sioux Of Dakota: Eighteen Months' Experience As An Indian Agent, 1869-70, Elizabeth S. Grobsmith

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This brief narrative was written by DeWitt Clinton Poole, Indian agent at the Whetstone Agency in Dakota Territory from 1869 to 1870. In a rather extensive introduction, Raymond DeMallie describes the establishment of the Agency and the difficulties Poole encountered there and admonishes the reader about Poole's paternalistic and racist view of Indian life. DeMallie reports: "Among the Sioux of Dakota is not a memorable book for its insight into American Indian culture . . . Poole failed to achieve any understanding of Sioux religion, admitting that he could see in it only 'selfishness and vindictiveness'" (lii). But DeMallie rightfully …

Rural German-Speaking Women In Early Nebraksa And Kansas: Ethnicity As A Factor In Frontier Adptation, Linda Schelbitzki Pickle Jan 1989

Rural German-Speaking Women In Early Nebraksa And Kansas: Ethnicity As A Factor In Frontier Adptation, Linda Schelbitzki Pickle

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Germans were the largest foreign-born ethnic group in nineteenth-century Kansas and Nebraska. Whether one includes all of the German speakers or only those who came from one of the many states eventually united into one German nation, these immigrants made up a sizeable proportion of the frontier population. Counting only the latter group, by 1900 eighteen percent of the residents of Nebraska and almost nine percent of the residents of Kansas were either first- or second-generation Germans. 1 Because of the size of the German population, their various times of emigration, and the diversity of their European origins and cultural …

Review Of ''The Orders Of The Dreamed": George Nelson On Cree And Northern Ojibwa Religion And Myth, 1823, Olive Patricia Dickson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

As Amerindian traditional religions gain legitimacy in the eyes of a world dominated by the "big five" (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism), they are coming in for more and more study. Unfortunately, New World belief systems as they existed at the time of first contact have on the whole been very poorly documented, a consequence of the Christian conviction that if they could be called religions at all, they were inspired by the devil. The best records that have come down to us were compiled by the Spaniards, who, in order to destroy the civilizations of Mexico and Central and …

Being A Lawyer For A Child Too Young To Be A Client: A Clinical Study, Stephen Wizner, Miriam Berkman Jan 1989

Being A Lawyer For A Child Too Young To Be A Client: A Clinical Study, Stephen Wizner, Miriam Berkman

Nebraska Law Review

The way legislatures and courts view the role of children in the divorce process has changed dramatically in recent years. The substantive standard for decision has remained relatively constant, but the procedure for gathering and presenting the facts relevant to that substantive standard has been modified in a majority of American jurisdictions to provide for independent legal representation of the child by a court-appointed attorney who serves as "counsel" or "guardian ad litem" for the child. The widespread adoption of this procedural innovation has generated considerable professional and scholarly debate over the role of the child's legal representative in …

Playing God In Academe, Raymond J. Rodrigues Jan 1989

Playing God In Academe, Raymond J. Rodrigues

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

In 1986, Alston Chase published his book Playing God in Yellowstone. In it, he argues that Yellowstone had never, in historic times, ever been in a truly natural state. He points out that when the early European and Anglo explorers first entered Yellowstone, fires were burning everywhere. The fires, he tells us, were set by the Indians in Yellowstone to drive game into areas where they could be trapped and killed. In setting those fires, the Indians were actually controlling and contributing to the ecological balance of the region.

African Marriage Systems: Perspectives From Evolutionary Ecology, Patricia Draper Jan 1989

African Marriage Systems: Perspectives From Evolutionary Ecology, Patricia Draper

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

There are many characteristics of contemporary African societies that puzzle demographers and others concerned with economic and social modernization. One of the most prominent is that the birth rate remains in both urban and rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa in spite of the presence of several factors that supposedly promote lowering of fertility (McNicoll 1980). Some of these factors are increased survivorship of children into adulthood, increased availability of education and levels of educational attainment (for both sexes), increased urbanization, and increased monetarization of the economy via migratory wage labor and cash cropping. Each of these is normally thought to …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Three strains of Lactobacilus acidophilus (LA) were isolated from the feces of mature boars that were not being fed antibiotics from the Nebraska Gene Pool (NGP). All three LA isolates were screened in vitro for anticholesteremic and antimicrobial activities. One strain, LA16, caused the greatest reduction in cholesterol and inhibited both Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli the most. ♥

G89-948 Safe Operation Of Compact Tractors, Robert D. Grisso, Rollin Schnieder Jan 1989

G89-948 Safe Operation Of Compact Tractors, Robert D. Grisso, Rollin Schnieder

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Follow these safety tips and maintenance procedures for checking, servicing and operating compact tractors to extend their life and reduce breakdowns and accidents.

Lawn and turf maintenance is easier because of modern compact tractors, but carelessness can spell trouble.

Most tractors used in grounds care can be classified into three size groups: 1) riding lawn mowers (3 to 8 horsepower) which are fitted with a mower and usually do not have other equipment or attachments that could be mounted separately; 2) lawn and garden or compact tractors (7 to 40 horsepower) that can be mounted with a variety of tools …

Residual Toxicity Of Some Fluoroaliphatic Sulfones To The Red Imported Fire Ant, C. S. Lofgren, W. A. Banks, R. K. Vander Meer, D. F. Williams

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Thirty-six fluoroaliphatic sulfones were tested to determine their residual toxicity to Solenopsis invicta Buren in soil. Six of the compounds gave >90% kill of the ants after they were exposed for 4 days at 10 ppm. When tested at 1.0 ppm, only one compound, AI3-10841, gave appreciable mortality. This compound was tested at 10 ppm in soil held outdoors under ambient summer conditions. Mortality 8 days following initial exposure to samples of this soil was 100% for 12 weeks and 91 to 100% from 20 to 36 weeks.

Genetic Variability For Mineral Element Concentration Of Crested Wheatgrass Forage, Kenneth P. Vogel, H. F. Maryland, P. E. Reece, J. F. S. Lamb Jan 1989

Genetic Variability For Mineral Element Concentration Of Crested Wheatgrass Forage, Kenneth P. Vogel, H. F. Maryland, P. E. Reece, J. F. S. Lamb

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Grass tetany is a complex metabolic disorder that causes substantial livestock production losses and deaths in temperate regions of the world. It is caused by low levels of Mg or an imbalance of K, Ca, and Mg in forage consumed by animals. Development of grasses with improved mineral balance would be an economical means of minimizing losses from this malady. This study was conducted to determine if genetic variability exists among crested wheatgrasses, Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertner and A. desertorum (Fisher ex Link) Schultes, for forage Mg, Ca, K, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Na, and P concentrations. Forage of spaced …

Roscoe Pound And American Sociology: A Study In Archival Frame Analysis, Sociobiography And Sociological Jurisprudence, Michael R. Hill Jan 1989

Roscoe Pound And American Sociology: A Study In Archival Frame Analysis, Sociobiography And Sociological Jurisprudence, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Roscoe Pound (1870-1964) was a noted botanist, jurist, and sociologist who founded the American school of sociological jurisprudence. Pound's sociological ideas originated at the University of Nebraska. Pound developed numerous ties to other sociologists, joined the American Sociological Society, and published in the American Journal of Sociology. Pound's modern erasure from sociological chronicles is attributed in part to hegemonic processes. The collection of archival data for this study in the history of sociology is generalized (by extending Erving Goffman's metatheory of meaning) as "archival frame analysis." Pound's intellectual milieu is analyzed using Mary Jo Deegan's theory of "core codes" …

Populations And Prey Selection Of Wintering Raptors In Boulder County, Colorado, Stephen R. Jones Jan 1989

Populations And Prey Selection Of Wintering Raptors In Boulder County, Colorado, Stephen R. Jones

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Wintering raptor populations were monitored between 1983 and 1988 in a 35 km2 study area centered 8 km north-northeast of the city of Boulder, Colorado. Raptors congregated around active prairie dog (Cynomys sp.) colonies. Golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) , ferruginous hawks (Buteo regalis), and red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis ) were observed hunting and capturing prairie dogs. Bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and northern harriers (Circus cyaneus) participated in the competition for captured prey. Thirteen occurrences were noted of bald eagles stealing captured prairie dogs from ferruginous hawks. A bubonic plague …

Forage Value Of Weed Species In A Grass Seeding, B. K. Lawrence, S. S. Waller, L. E. Moser, Bruce Anderson, L. L. Larson Jan 1989

Forage Value Of Weed Species In A Grass Seeding, B. K. Lawrence, S. S. Waller, L. E. Moser, Bruce Anderson, L. L. Larson

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Weeds are a major problem in seeding rangeland and cropland to native grasses. However, many immature weedy forbs and grasses are palatable to cattle. Research was conducted using yearling cattle for weed control in big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii var. gerardii Vitman) seedings (1987, 1988) at Mead, Nebraska on a Sharpsburg silty clay loam (fine, montmorillonitic, mesic Typic Argiudoll) soil. Prominent volunteer species were annual foxtails (Setaria spp. Beauv.), redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus SSL.), velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.), and common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.). Cattle consumed annual foxtails and redroot pigweed, but did not consume velvetleaf …

Writing Construction Specifications For Prairie Landscapes: The Basics, Jon Bryan Burley

Proceedings of the North American Prairie Conferences

Prairie landscaping is being incorporated into the construction industry. This means that designers of prairie landscapes must be able to communicate landscape specifications to landscape contractors. At present, the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) format has been adopted by the construction industry as the organizing structure to communicate specifications. This paper describes the CSI specification structure and its application in preparing prairie landscaping construction specifications. The paper describes the importance of divisions zero, one, and two plus sections 02200, 02920, 02930, 02950, and 02970. In addition, the paper presents basic key principles in writing each specification section and the content of …

Merging Foreign And Domestic Information Policy Goals: The Us Government’S Office Of Technical Services (1946-1950), Robert K. Stewart

Electronic Reference Materials

This document describes the early history of the Federal Government technical reports distribution system. The Office of Technical Services has evolved into the National Technical Information System.

Digitized by Robert L. Bolin

US information policy during the post-World War II era reflected a duality of purpose: gain international superiority in the science and technology sectors, and promote the flow of such information to small business in America. To accomplish these dual purposes, Congress and the administration cooperated to create and fund the Office of Technical Services. OTS's job was to communicate the enormous body of scientific and technical research undertaken …

Selenium In The Aquatic Environment Of Quivira National Wildlife Refuge In 1987, R. Mark Wilson, George T. Allen Jan 1989

Selenium In The Aquatic Environment Of Quivira National Wildlife Refuge In 1987, R. Mark Wilson, George T. Allen

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Selenium is a widely distributed element generally found at low concentrations in surface waters and soils (Cooper et. al. 1974. Kubota 1980. Raptis et. al. 1983. Trelease 1945). Selenium has received recent attention from the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) because high levels of selenium borne by irrigation return flows have caused serious problems for fish and wildlife (Clark 1987. Hoffman et. al. 1988. Lemly 1987. Ohlendorf et. al. 1986a,b, 1987, 1988, Saiki and Lowe 1987). Because selenium concentrations can occur in coal deposits, ash from coal-fired powerplants has caused serious selenium contamination …

Creativity And Perception, John H. Flowers, Calvin P. Garbin Jan 1989

Creativity And Perception, John H. Flowers, Calvin P. Garbin

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Informal thought about the nature of mental operations important to creative human behavior suggests that perceptual processes are of considerable importance. The ability to “see relationships among elements” is an attribution commonly made toward authors of major scientific discoveries or of noteworthy artistic achievements. For example, Shepard (1978, 1981) documented self-reports from several creative scientists and authors that strongly emphasize the role of visual imagery and the manipulation of visual codes in the creative process.

Given the anecdotal and self-report evidence for a relationship between creative behavior and aspects of perceptual processing, it initially may seem surprising that there is …
