Empiricism And Reason In Harriet Martineau’S Sociology, Michael R. Hill Jan 1989

Empiricism And Reason In Harriet Martineau’S Sociology, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The architecture and evolution of Harriet Martineau's sociological epistemology epitomize an essential tension between abstract theory and concrete empiricism. The body of Martineau's intellectual work demonstrates a major conceptual shift, from early religious convictions to subsequent rejection of all metaphysical systems. How to Observe Morals and Manners lies midway in this journey. The epistemological and biographical route to Martineau's adamant repudiation of metaphysics was long, personally tumultuous, and grounded fundamentally in empirical studies of social conditions. I focus here on the give-and-take between metaphysics, empiricism, and rationality in Harriet Martineau's sociological work. Part one of this essay highlights the major …

Cognitive Processes In The Curry Learning Style Framework As Measured By The Learning Style Profile And The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Among Non-Majors In College Biology, Claudia Tarver Melear

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Curry's (1983) model of learning style framework with Claxton & Murrell's (1987) adaptations was used to study the profile of the non-major in a college biology course. The purpose of the study was to provide empirically derived data in both a qualitative and quantitative format of the non major (both successful and unsuccessful students) to improve the course. Over 600 students were administered the Learning Style Profile [(LSP) (National Association of Secondary School Principals) Indicator (MBTI) (NASSP) and the Myers-Briggs Type (Consulting Psychologists Press)] to determine the students' learning styles as a predictor for Success in the course. The MBTI …

Toward A Resolution Of The Paradox Of Aggressive Displays: Ii. Behavioral Efference And The Communication Of Intentions, Alan B. Bond Jan 1989

Toward A Resolution Of The Paradox Of Aggressive Displays: Ii. Behavioral Efference And The Communication Of Intentions, Alan B. Bond

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

An inference from game-theory models of animal conflict is that adversaries should not inform one another about their level of aggressive motivation. This poses a paradox for the traditional ethological account of graded aggressive displays because it is usually assumed that the adaptive significance of these behavior patterns lies in their making such information available. To resolve the paradox, I propose that communication is only an incidental effect of displays, and that their primary adaptive function is regulation of the intensity of aggressive encounters through positive feedback on aggressive motivation, a process termed "behavioral efference." Evidence in support of this …

A Mimbres Burial With Associated Colon Remains From The Nan Ranch Ruin, New Mexico, Harry J. Shafer, Marrianne Marek, Karl J. Reinhard

Karl Reinhard Publications

The skeletal remains of an adult male associated with desiccated tissue and a coprolite were recovered from an apen-air midden deposit at the NAN Ranch Ruin (LA15049)) a large Mimbres site in Grant County) New Mexico. The find dates to about A.C. 1000-1100. Identifiable macroscopic elements in the caprolite consist offi nely fragmented corn and tiny seed fragments of an unknown plant. High amounts of willow (Salix) and mustard (Brassicaceae) pollen may indicate the ingestion of medicinal plants to combat a deteriorating health condition. The individual was approximately 35 -40 years old at the time of death and suffered from …

An Alternative Approach For Evaluating The Efficacy Of Potential Biocontrol Agents Of Weeds. 1. Inverse Linear Mode, Dan J. Pantone, William A. Williams, Armand R. Maggenti Jan 1989

An Alternative Approach For Evaluating The Efficacy Of Potential Biocontrol Agents Of Weeds. 1. Inverse Linear Mode, Dan J. Pantone, William A. Williams, Armand R. Maggenti

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Methods for evaluating the efflicacy of potential classical biocontrol agents were outlined for a model biocontrol agent-weed-crop system. A proposed biocontrol agent (the fiddleneck flower gall nematode), its weed host (coast fiddleneck), and wheat were used as representative organisms. An additive experimental design (inverse linear model) was used. Regression of the reciprocal of the average plant biomass of each species onto the density of itself and the other plant species yielded competitive indices that measure the competitive ability of the plants. The results of 2 yr of field experiments revealed a dramatic change in the competitive interaction between fiddleneck and …

The Transition From Infancy To Early Childhood: A Difficult Transition, And A Difficult Theory, Carolyn P. Edwards Jan 1989

The Transition From Infancy To Early Childhood: A Difficult Transition, And A Difficult Theory, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The transition from infancy to early childhood was observed in households in rural Zinacanteco households in the Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, in 1968-1969, and found to be a fairly lengthy period of upset, disturbance, listlessness, and apathy for the children, leading eventually to their accepting a new position in the family. The transition involved three abrupt and harsh changes: (1) abrupt weaning from the mother’s breast; (2) simultaneous change in sleeping arrangements from lying next to the mother to sleeping with siblings; and (3) more gradual transfer of the child’s primary care from the mother to older siblings or courtyard …

Postsecondary Education For Students With Learning Disabilities, J. Ron Nelson, Benjamin Lignugaris-Kraft Jan 1989

Postsecondary Education For Students With Learning Disabilities, J. Ron Nelson, Benjamin Lignugaris-Kraft

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Increasingly, students with learning disabilities are attending community colleges and traditional 4-year colleges and universities. This article presents the results of a review of the literature on services available or recommended for students with learning disabilities. The results suggest that postsecondary institutions have begun to provide a wide array of services to these students. There is little empirical evidence, however, on the effectiveness of those services. An agenda for future research is also discussed.

Breeding Grasses For The Future, Kenneth P. Vogel, H. J. Gorz, F. A. Haskins Jan 1989

Breeding Grasses For The Future, Kenneth P. Vogel, H. J. Gorz, F. A. Haskins

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Plant breeding, including grass breeding, involves taking a raw product, plant germplasm, and improving or adding value to that germ plasm by manipulating its genetic composition. The value added to the germplasm has a cost. It usually costs in excess of $100,000/yr to maintain a viable, ongoing grass breeding program. The output of a grass breeding program, i.e., the released cultivars and germplasm, should have an economic value in excess of the cost of the breeding program. Grass breeding programs have produced products such as 'Coastal' bermudagrass [Cynodon doclylon (L.) Pers.] where the economic value has greatly exceeded the …

Social Behavior Of North American Owls, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 1989

Social Behavior Of North American Owls, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

Social behaviors in animals include a very wide range of interindividual communications, both within and between species. They include such rather generalized social responses as social flocking or roosting behavior, as well as much more individualized and complex interactions such as courtship, aggression, and parental behaviors. Regardless of their complexity, social interactions involve some level of communication or the transmission and interpretation of social signals. These signals can be transmitted in any of several sensory channels, which in owls are most likely to include visual, acoustic, and tactile modes of communication.

Most and perhaps all owls show distinctive postures when …

Shireen Adenwalla Papers

The velocity of ultrasound was measured on sinter-forged polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-b samples with a superconducting transition temperature of 91 K. The forging process results in crystallites which are preferentially aligned with their c axis aligned parallel to the forging axis as confirmed from optical and x-ray measurements. Sound-velocity measurements show that the material is elastically anisotropic. The temperature dependence of the sound velocity shows distinct anomalies. For propagation parallel to the forging axis, both longitudinal and shear waves displayed a thermal hysteresis between 65 and 260 K; however the longitudinal sound velocity with q in the …

Cancer Morbidity In Lamp Manufacturing Workers, Harry S. Shannon, Ted Haines, Charles D. Bernholz, Jim A. Julian, Dave K. Verma, Ellen Jamieson, Chris Walsh Sep 1988

Cancer Morbidity In Lamp Manufacturing Workers, Harry S. Shannon, Ted Haines, Charles D. Bernholz, Jim A. Julian, Dave K. Verma, Ellen Jamieson, Chris Walsh

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

A historical prospective study of cancer in lamp manufacturing workers in one plant was conducted. All men and women who worked for a total of at least 6 months and were employed at some time between 1960 and 1975 were included. Work histories were abstracted and subjects were divided according to whether they had worked in the coiling and wire drawing area (CWD). Cancer morbidity from 1964 to 1982 was ascertained via the provincial registry, and was compared with the site-specific incidence in Ontario, adjusting for age, sex and calendar period. Of particular interest were primary breast and gynecological cancers …

Hallucination And Point Of View In La Tentation De Saint Antoine, Marshall C. Olds Sep 1988

Hallucination And Point Of View In La Tentation De Saint Antoine, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Over the past twenty-five years, as readings of Flaubert's texts have become increasingly concerned with the definition of various narrative structures, the study of point of view has been inextricably tied to determining how his narratives generate (or, to some minds, subvert) meaning. Thus it is that almost all hermeneutical approaches have been concerned with point of view in one way or another, the procedure usually being to establish the principal or authoritative narrational axis (or perhaps a pseudo-authoritative one) and then to plot and analyze the departures from it. Point of view is not a new concern, of course, …

When the last Newsletter was published in 1976 (No.4), it was assumed that it would be followed by another In 4 or 5 years. And indeed, considerable effort has been expended on the production of No.5. However, for various very good reasons No.5, although close to publication several times, aborted several times. Now largely because this is the centennial year of our Department, we feel that we can wait no longer. Because of that fact, the format of this Newsletter will be slightly different from those in the past. We have the "news" that you furnished about yourselves 5 or …

Identification Of Learning Styles Strategies Which Enable College Students With Differing Personality Temperaments To Cope With Learning Blocks, Gholam Hossein Zamani Zarghani Aug 1988

Identification Of Learning Styles Strategies Which Enable College Students With Differing Personality Temperaments To Cope With Learning Blocks, Gholam Hossein Zamani Zarghani

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to identify the major coping strategies which college students with different personality temperament used to deal with their learning blocks. Students' temperament type was obtained from the pool of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator results available at the Agricultural College, UN-L. An instrument measuring learning blocks was designed and administered in the Fall, 1987. The Coping strategy Inventory (CSI) was developed and administered in the spring, 1988. One hundred and twenty seven agricultural college students responded to the first phase of the study, and 230 agricultural college students took the CSI. The Statistical package for …
