Nicotinate, Nicotinamide, And The Reactivity Of Leghemoglobin In Soybean Root Nodules, Robert V. Klucas, Cyril A. Appleby Jan 1991

Nicotinate, Nicotinamide, And The Reactivity Of Leghemoglobin In Soybean Root Nodules, Robert V. Klucas, Cyril A. Appleby

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Nicotinate has been postulated to interfere with the binding of O2 to ferrous leghemoglobin in soybean (Glycine max) root nodules. For such a function, the levels of nicotinate in nodules must be sufficiently high to bind a significant amount of leghemoglobin. We have measured levels of nicotinate, nicotinamide, and leghemoglobin in soybean nodules from plants 34 to 73 days after planting in a glasshouse. On a per gram nodule fresh weight basis, levels between 10.4 and 21 nanomoles for nicotinate, 19.2 and 37.8 nanomoles for nicotinamide, and 170 to 280 nanomoles for leghemoglobin were measured. Even if …

In Vivo Regulatory Phosphorylation Site In C4-Leaf Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxylase From Maize And Sorghum, Jin-An Jiao, Jean Vidal, Cristina Echevarría, Raymond Chollet Jan 1991

In Vivo Regulatory Phosphorylation Site In C4-Leaf Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxylase From Maize And Sorghum, Jin-An Jiao, Jean Vidal, Cristina Echevarría, Raymond Chollet

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Reversible seryl-phosphorylation contributes to the light/dark regulation of C4-leaf phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) activity in vivo. The specific regulatory residue that, upon in vitro phosphorylation by a maize-leaf protein-serine kinase(s), leads to an increase in catalytic activity and a decrease in malatesensitivity of the target enzyme has been recently identified as Ser-15 in 32P-phosphorylated/activated dark-form maize PEPC (J-A Jiao, R Chollet [1990] Arch Biochem Biophys 283: 300-305). In order to ascertain whether this N-terminal seryl residue is, indeed, the in vivo regulatory phosphorylation site, [32P]phosphopeptides were isolated and purified from in vivo 32P-labeled maize and …

Continuity And Change On The Twentieth-Century Farm: The Gists Of South Dakota, 1921-71, James Marten Jan 1991

Continuity And Change On The Twentieth-Century Farm: The Gists Of South Dakota, 1921-71, James Marten

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

When Gladys Leffler Gist remarked in her reminiscences that she and her husband Ray had witnessed "considerable 'for better and for worse'" during their forty years together, she could just as well have been describing the "marriage" between farmers and the agricultural economy during the same period. Depression and drought, of course, challenged those people making their livings from the land and in many ways dominated their impressions of those years. Of more long-term importance, however, were the "vast and fundamental changes" that, according to Gilbert Fite, stemmed from the "application of new technology, chemistry, and plant and animal sciences" …

Lowry Charles Wimberly And The Retreat Of Regionalism, Kathleen A. Boardman

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

"The New Regionalism," an essay by Lowry Charles Wimberly, appeared in the summer 1932 issue of Prairie Schooner, already well known as a midwestern literary magazine. Wimberly, an English professor at the University of Nebraska, had been the magazine's editor since its 1927 founding (and would continue in the post until 1956). As editor and teacher, he unfailingly encouraged potential writers to "leave trace of themselves" and their region by using local materials. 1

Spring 1991 Occurrence Report Jan 1991

Spring 1991 Occurrence Report

Nebraska Bird Review

For the first six months of 1991, 301 species were reported from 34 counties. This compares with 290 species from 13 occurrence report and 17 "spot check" locations covering 30 counties in 1990; 289 from 20 report locations in 36 counties in 1989; and 306 from 28 report locations involving 34 counties. The tables which follow represent 22 of these counties in 21 columns (Douglas and Sarpy listed together as has become the custom), and additional species lists from 11 counties are also provided.

Annual Report 1990 Jan 1991

Annual Report 1990

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

The year opened, as it always does, with the least exciting event - the Annual General Meeting. All four officers were re-elected and we also re-elected for a further three year term our supportive and generous President Jonathan Ouvry.

The next event was much more exciting. In April Gabriel Woolf made his 21st annual visit to Warwickshire to present the ever popular programme of Readings from the novels. 'Enter the Aunts' proved to be one of the most popular he has ever done, and his own sense of humour and sensitivity of selection made the most of those wonderful aunts, …

Off The Mark: The Nebraska Supreme Court And Judicial Nominating Commissions, Steven L. Willborn Jan 1991

Off The Mark: The Nebraska Supreme Court And Judicial Nominating Commissions, Steven L. Willborn

Nebraska Law Review

When the Nebraska Legislature enacted the current statutes that regulate judicial nominating commissions, it was 100 percent certain that the statutes required commissions to select or reject candidates for judicial office through a public roll call vote. Last October, 100 percent of the Nebraska Supreme Court was certain that those same statutes permit, and indeed may require, judicial nominating commissions to conduct their voting in secret. This article explores this strange state of affairs. The article first analyzes Marks v. Judicial Nominating Commission, the case in which the supreme court decided that the voting of judicial nominating commissions could …

Comment: A Departed Partner's Liability For The Post-Departure Malpractice Of Her Ex-Colleagues—A Practical Approach, Stephen E. Kalish Jan 1991

Comment: A Departed Partner's Liability For The Post-Departure Malpractice Of Her Ex-Colleagues—A Practical Approach, Stephen E. Kalish

Nebraska Law Review

Lawyers usually practice in law partnerships, and regularly, and with increasing frequency, join and depart these law firms. Commentators have only recently begun to examine the law governing the departure of partners from law firms. The purpose of this Comment is to examine one small aspect of the law governing this mobility: the post-departure liability of departed lawyers for malpractice committed by the remaining, servicing (to the client), ex-partners. The discussion will demonstrate how a too rigorous application of partnership law to the law firm situation leads to bad law. The Comment suggests that the client-law firm retainer agreement, which …

An Isolated Storage Vessel At Site 42sa20779 In Glen Canyon National Recreation Area: Adaptive Storage And Caching Behavior In The Prehistoric Southwest, Anne M. Wolley, Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

This report documents the excavation and analysis of a large, isolated ceramic vessel discovered in the spring of 1988 in the Hite Marina area of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Utah Project #89-NA-051N. Several college students from Western State College in Colorado (Dean Brian, Matt How, Cathy Arvey, and Mike Donaldson) were hiking in the area when Dean Brian discovered the pot. Aware of the possible significance of such a find, Matt How immediately contacted Park Archaeologist Kris Kincaid and informed her of the vessel's location. Matt later returned with his family, Micky and JoNell How, when archaeologists Kincaid and …

1. Computer-Assisted Personal Ity Test Interpretation: The Dawn Of Discovery, Douglas N. Jackson Jan 1991

1. Computer-Assisted Personal Ity Test Interpretation: The Dawn Of Discovery, Douglas N. Jackson

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

My aim in this chapter is to outline some of the substantive and psychometric bases on which we can build a science of assessment that takes advantage of the enormous potential inherent in the digital computer and in artificial intelligence. Some of these foundations are within the traditions of classical assessment. But others represent urgently needed areas of explication and research.

It is my view, in the tradition of Cronbach (1954), that developers of computer software for testing should listen to what psychometricians say, and, as well, psychometricians should be sensitive to new research ideas waiting to be solved that …

7. Implementation Decisions In Designing Computer-Based Instructional Testing Programs, John V. Noonan, Paul D. Sarvela

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

From preschool to graduate school, computer-based instruction (CBI) has become an increasingly common event in today's education and training community. The interactive characteristics of CBI and its ability to simulate advanced concepts and operations, such as patient management simulations for medical students (Whiteside & Whiteside, 1987/88) or the maneuvering of a jet airplane (Conkright, 1982), make CBI an attractive new instructional delivery system for educators working in many different fields .

Because of these qualities , the computer has tremendous potential in educational and psychological measurement. For example, Millman & Arter (1984) describe how the computer aids in maintaining test-item …

G91-1049 Controlling Internal Parasites In Swine, B.E. Straw Jan 1991

G91-1049 Controlling Internal Parasites In Swine, B.E. Straw

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This publication addresses the identification, prevention and control of internal parasites in swine and lists characteristics of principle dewormers.

Whether pigs are raised in confinement or on pasture, controlling internal parasites is essential to the overall herd health program. Recent studies by Tom Kennedy of A.E.F. Research, Inc, Waunakee, WI, have shown that worm infestation is prevalent on both a farm and individual pig basis. Of the farms examined, 91 percent raised pigs on concrete, wire or slotted floors, but more than 90 percent of all farms were infested with one or more kinds of worms.

Ec91-1556 Subterranean Termites And Their Control, Shripat T. Kamble

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Termite damage to residential and commercial buildings in the U.S. costs more than $1 billion annually. Subterranean termites, the most destructive of all termite species, account for 95% of the damage. Subterranean termites occur in every state except Alaska. Two subterranean termite species, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) and R. tibialis Banks, are found in Nebraska. Control of these termites costs more than $1 million each year.
