Entomology Papers from Other Sources
In 1987 and 1988, samples of preserved insects were extracted from the ice of Knife Point Glacier, Fremont County, Wyoming. The glacier lies at an altitude of 3500 m a.s.l. in the Shoshone National Forest, Wind River Range, and is known to contain preserved insects. Although the glacier has undergone extensive recession in the last 50 yr, some insect deposits are still embedded at 20 to 25 cm below the surface and perhaps much deeper. The frozen deposits appear to consist entirely of grasshoppers. A few, virtually intact, specimens and body parts were in a state of preservation that allowed …

Maize Production Impacts On Groundwater Quality, James S. Schepers, M.G. Moravek, E.E. Alberts, K.D. Frank
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The cumulative effects of management pratices on nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) leaching and groundwater quality are frequently difficult to document because of the time required for expression and the diversity of interacting process involved. This work reports results of a N and water management program initiated by the Central Platte Natural Resource District (CPNRD) in Nebraska. Cultural pratices recommended by the CPNRD and reported by producers for the 1988 growing season, representing approximately 3900 fields and fertilizer N application rates. Groundwater NO3-N concentrations were positively correlated with ressidual N in the surface 0.9 m of soil prior to the growing season, reflecting …

The Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation (NAS) Program, which is based at NASA Ames Research Center, is a large-scale effort to advance the state of computational aerodynamics. Specifically, the NAS organization aims &dquo;to provide the Nation’s aerospace research and development community by the year 2000 a highperformance, operational computing system capable of simulating an entire aerospace vehicle system within a computing time of one to several hours&dquo; (NAS Systems Division, 1988, p. 3). The successful solution of this &dquo;grand challenge&dquo; problem will require the development of computer systems that can perform the required complex scientific computations at a sustained rate nearly 1,000 …

Dietary And Parasitological Aanalysis Of Coprolites Recovered From Mummy 5, Ventana Cave, Arizona, Karl J. Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Four coprolites were excavated with Burial 5 at Ventena Cave, a partially mummified five-year-old child. Two coprolites were granular and dark in color and two were fibrous and light in color. The coprolites are remains of the child's intestinal contents and were submitted for dietary and parasitological analysis. No parasites were found. The fibrous coprolites proved to be remains of highly masticated mesquite pods (Prosopis). The granular coprolites consist of seeds of saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). Pollen analysis reveals two dietary pollen types, both derived from cactus. No evidence of cultivated plants except for a trace …

Roscoe Pound And Academic Community On The Great Plains: The Interactional Origins Of American Sociological Jurisprudence At The University Of Nebraska, 1900-1907, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The turn-of-the-century academic community at the University of Nebraska differed sharply from today's highly stratified, bureaucratized, multiversity setting. The campus, the student body, and the instructional staff were, of course, considerably smaller in number than now. But, beyond this obvious demographic observation, there was a pioneering spirit and a sense of scholarly community that fostered remarkable intellectual creativity. In particular, the Nebraska campus provided the collegial setting from which Roscoe Pound's American version of sociological jurisprudence sprang forth in a resounding critique of the U.S. legal establishment at the 1906 meetings of the American Bar Association (cf., Pound 1906; Harding …
Fission-Track Ages Of Zircons From Lonergan Creek (Shoreline Fossil Locality, Ash Hollow Formation, Upper Miocene) In Western Nebraska, Michael B. Leite
Fission-Track Ages Of Zircons From Lonergan Creek (Shoreline Fossil Locality, Ash Hollow Formation, Upper Miocene) In Western Nebraska, Michael B. Leite
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
A bed of vitric ash occurs 2 m above the primary fossiliferous unit at Lonergan Creek Locality in the Ash Hollow Formation on the north shore of Lake McConaughy, western Nebraska. Zircon crystals recovered from the ash were dated using the fission-track method. The grouping of youngest-age euhedral grains among the largely detrital suite is interpreted as the airfall population, with a fission- track age of 10.42 ± 2.5 Ma. Owing to uncertainties about the origin of this youngest group, the age should be interpreted as a "detrital" date and considered a maximum age for the ash. The Lonergan Creek …
Ditching Of Wetlands In The Nebraska Sandhills: A Case Study Of Grant County, James E. Ducey
Ditching Of Wetlands In The Nebraska Sandhills: A Case Study Of Grant County, James E. Ducey
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Ditching of wetlands in the Nebraska Sandhills is shown by a case study of Grant County, where ditching can be traced back more than fifty years. Drainage activity shown on recent soil and topographic maps shows more than 55 sites in the county where ditching has occurred. Many lakes and marshes have been completely drained and are now hay meadows. In a section of southeastern Grant County, eight lakes comprising more than 3,500 acres are shown as drained. The wetland valleys in the Sandhills Natural Landmark south of Hyannis have been ditched. The regulatory role of the Army Corps of …
Orphaned Mallard Brood Travels Alone From Nest To Water, Gary Krapu, Christopher Dwyer, Carmen Luna
Orphaned Mallard Brood Travels Alone From Nest To Water, Gary Krapu, Christopher Dwyer, Carmen Luna
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Waterfowl young often travel long distances from the nest site to water when accompanied by a parent; the timing of the trip can range from a few hours to days after hatching (Sowls 1955, Bjlrvall 1968; Dzubin and Gollop 1972; Ball 1973; Duncan 1983; Afton and Paulus, in press). Little is known, however, of what happens to waterfowl broods or individual young stranded far from water by the death of a parent or after becoming separated or abandoned.
Nitrogen And Methyl Jasmonate Induction Of Soybean Vegetative Storage Protein Genes, Paul E. Staswick, Jing-Feng Huang, Yoon Rhee
Nitrogen And Methyl Jasmonate Induction Of Soybean Vegetative Storage Protein Genes, Paul E. Staswick, Jing-Feng Huang, Yoon Rhee
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Vegetative storage protein (VSP) and VSP mRNA levels in soybean (Glycine max) leaves correlated with the amount of NH4NO3 provided to nonnodulated plants. The mRNA level declined as leaves matured, but high levels of N delayed the decline. This is consistent with the proposed role for VSP in the temporary storage of N. Wounding, petiole girdling, and treatment with methyijasmonate (MeJA) increased VSP mRNA in leaves 24 hours after treatment. The magnitude of the response depended on leaf age and N availability. N deficiency essentially eliminated the response to wounding and petiole girdling. MeJA was …
Performance Of Seedigated And Conventionally Planted Crops, W. S. Leander Jr., Derrel L. Martin, James R. Gilley
Performance Of Seedigated And Conventionally Planted Crops, W. S. Leander Jr., Derrel L. Martin, James R. Gilley
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Seedigation is the use of a moving sprinkler irrigation system to broadcast seeds on the soil surface. Seed germination, plant characteristics and yield for grain sorghum, winter wheat and soybeans that were seedigated and conventionally planted are compared. When the seeding rates for seedigation were increased above that for conventional planting, and adequate moisture was available for germination, grain sorghum and wheat seedigated on tilled surfaces produced yields similar to conventionally planted crops. Seedigation of soybeans into fallow conditions, or when used as a relay crop, was unsuccessful. Shallow disking following seedigation did not improve germination or yield of grain …

Protein Turnover As A Component In The Light/Dark Regulation Of PhosphoEnolPyruvate Carboxylase Protein-Serine Kinase Activity In C4 Plants, Jin-An Jiao, Cristina Echevarría, Jean Vidal, Raymond Chollet
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Maize leaf phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase [PEPC; orthophosphate:oxaloacetate carboxy-lyase (phosphorylating), EC 4.1.1.311 protein-serine kinase (PEPC-PK) phosphorylates serine-15 of its target enzyme, thus leading to an increase in catalytic activity and a concomitant decrease in malate sensitivity of this cytoplasmic C4 photosynthesis enzyme in the light. We have recently demonstrated that the PEPC-PK activity in maize leaves is slowly, but strikingly, increased in the light and decreased in darkness. In this report, we provide evidence that cycloheximide, an inhibitor of cytoplasmic protein synthesis, when fed to detached leaves of C4 monocots (maize, sorghum) and dicots (Portulaca oleracea) in the …

A Common Sense Approach To Peak Picking In Two-, Three-, And Four-Dimensional Spectra Using Automatic Computer Analysis Of Contour Diagrams, Daniel S. Garrett, Robert Powers, Angela M. Gronenborn, G. Marius Clore
Robert Powers Publications
The analysis of multidimensional NMR spectra has been a challenging problem since the earliest two-dimensional experiments were reported as stacked plots (I). The first step in analysis involves obtaining a list of chemical-shift coordinates for the cross peaks. Initially, simple programs were used to generate contour plots of two-dimensional NMR data, which were analyzed manually. As the utility and versatility of multidimensional NMR spectroscopy grew, several automated methods of peak picking have been developed. This Communication describes a new peak-picking algorithm which is based on contour diagrams and designed for the automated interpretation of higher dimensional 3D and 4D spectra.

Parenting Factors, Social Skills, And Value Commitments As Precursors To School Failure, Involvement With Deviant Peers, And Delinquent Behavior, Ronald L. Simons, Les B. Whitbeck, Rand D. Conger, Katherine J. Conger
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Elements of social control theory were combined with social learning theory to construct a model of delinquency which specifies the manner in which parenting factors, social skills, value commitments, and problems in school contribute to association with deviant peers and involvement in delinquent behavior. The model was tested using a sample of 61 families, each of which included a seventh grader. Questionnaire responses and coded videotaped family interaction were employed as measures of study constructs. The results largely supported the proposed model.

The Pre-Paradigmatic Ideology Of Explained Variance In Sociology, Michael R. Hill
The Pre-Paradigmatic Ideology Of Explained Variance In Sociology, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This discussion was originally conceived for presentation in one of the several MSS sections on quantitative methods. My project, however, was the only one for which the organizer of the quantitative sessions could not find a slot. In fact, he neither told me my proposal was rejected nor communicated my name or abstract to the MSS program chair. It. matters to me little whether this was by design or accident -- the result was the same. Were it not for Susan Wright.'s active response to my belated inquiries about the status of my participation in these meetings – and her …
Review Of Becoming Mature: Childhood Ghosts And Spirits In Adult Life, By Valerie Malhotra Bentz., Michael R. Hill
Review Of Becoming Mature: Childhood Ghosts And Spirits In Adult Life, By Valerie Malhotra Bentz., Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Bentz's work will appeal to many sociologists, including those with interests in contemporary theory, family studies, clinical sociology, and research methodologies. This useful and intellectually stimulating volume appears in the Communications and Social Order series, edited by David Maines. Peter Manning provides the foreword (pp. xiii-xvi).
Bentz builds on an impressive foundation of classical and contemporary theorists, including George Herbert Mead, Martin Heidegger, Edmund Husserl, Sigmund Freud, Alfred Schutz, Jiirgen Haberrnas, and Norman Denzin. Some readers will be outraged by Bentz's conscious joining of symbolic interactionist concepts with ideas from psychoanalytic traditions. But readers who admire Haberrnas' recent transformations of …
The Centennial Ethic And The Spirit Of Archivalism, Michael R. Hill
The Centennial Ethic And The Spirit Of Archivalism, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
My thinking about the possible relationships between centennials and archives was prompted first by my own work on archives and archival methodology (Hill 1989, 1990, Forthcoming) and second by the upcoming centennial of the American Sociological Association (ASA) in 2005. It is to the centennial of the Department of Sociology at the University of Kansas, however, to which I owe the specific impetus to prepare this paper. I am very pleased, as a neighbor from Nebraska, to celebrate with you the founding of the world's very first department of sociology at the University of Kansas (Sica 1983). We are, of …
Doctoral Dissertations As Liminal Journeys Of The Self: Betwixt And Between In Graduate Sociology Programs, Mary Jo Deegan, Michael R. Hill
Doctoral Dissertations As Liminal Journeys Of The Self: Betwixt And Between In Graduate Sociology Programs, Mary Jo Deegan, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The sociology dissertation process is a liminal journey, a passage characterized by ambiguity, uncertainty, and crisis in which the student self is abandoned and a new professional self claims a world of power. authority, maturity, and responsibility. The theoretical perspectives of Victor Turner, Arnold Van Gennep, and George H. Mead are extended to conceptualize the “liminal self who undertakes this difficult and problematic journey of transformation. Experiential methodology, in which theory and autobiography are combined, is employed to explicate the dissertation as a conflictful rite de passage and to critique doctoral projects that unrefexively adopt “technical formulas” for success and …

"Pap" Singleton's Dunlap Colony: Relief Agencies And The Failure Of A Black Settlement In Easter Kansas, Joseph V. Hickey
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
"T here are gathered at Dunlap and vicinity at the present time between 275 and 300 families of colored people, all of whom are succeeding quite well and many of whom are on the road to prosperity. The plan of Dunlap Colony is very simple, the chief reason, probably, of the success met with, being the fact that every settler is compelled to own his property, no renting being permitted ... as Mr. Atchison expressed it, "everyone is fat and happy . . ."
