Drought Planning: A Process For State Government, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 1991

Drought Planning: A Process For State Government, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought has been a prevalent feature of the American landscape during the latter part of the 1980s, producing serious socioeconomic and environmental consequences. These recent experiences with drought have renewed concern about the inadequacy of federal and state contingency planning efforts and the lack of coordination for assessment and response efforts between these levels of government. This paper presents the results of research aimed at facilitating the preparation of drought contingency plans by state government in conjunction with a state’s overall water management planning activity. The ten-step drought plan development process reported is intended to improve mitigation efforts through more …

Modeling Age-Specific Mortality For Marine Mammal Populations, Jay Barlow, Peter Boveng Jan 1991

Modeling Age-Specific Mortality For Marine Mammal Populations, Jay Barlow, Peter Boveng

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

A method is presented for estimating age-specific mortality based on minimal information: a model life table and an estimate of longevity. This approach uses expected patterns of mammalian survivorship to define a general model of age-specific mortality rates. One such model life table is based on data for northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) using Siler’s (1979) 5-parameter competing risk model. Alternative model life tables are based on historical data for human females and on a published model for Old World monkeys. Survival rates for a marine mammal species are then calculated by scaling these models by the longevity …

Enhancing Creativity In A Graduate Course On Creativity: Entering The Time And Space Of The Young Child, Carolyn P. Edwards, Doris J. Shallcross, Julie Maloney

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

In designing a graduate class at the University of Massachusetts, called "Creativity and the Young Child," we built an experience for adults based on a highly regarded European preschool program based on the visual arts. The program, found in the municipal schools for three- to six- year-olds in the city of Reggio Emilia, Italy, is designed to foster young children's learning, representation, and expression through exploration and mastery of many symbolic media. We wanted to find out whether American adults exposed to the theoretical and practical elements of the Reggio Emilia approach - but on an adult level - would …

Automating Tolerance Synthesis: A Framework And Tools, Stephen C.-Y. Lu, Robert G. Wilhelm Jan 1991

Automating Tolerance Synthesis: A Framework And Tools, Stephen C.-Y. Lu, Robert G. Wilhelm

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

This paper describes CASCADE-T—a new approach to tolerance synthesis that uses a complete representation of the conditional tolerance relations that exist between features of a part under design. Conditional tolerances are automatically determined from functional requirements and shape information. Tolerance primitives based on the virtual boundary requirements approach to tolerance representation are composed to form more complex tolerance relationships. Artificial intelligence techniques, including a constraint network, frame-based system, and dependency tracking are used to support flexible and detailed computation for tolerance analysis and synthesis.

Forming Fine Particles, Dennis R. Alexander Jan 1991

Forming Fine Particles, Dennis R. Alexander

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

To alter feedstock material, the material is exposed to laser radiation applied at a selected angle of incidence, intensity and wavelength related to the refractive index of the feedstock material. Fine uniform particles may be formed through vapor explosion and/or plasma formation and used by this method to coat surfaces, such as with paint or adhesive or to suply uniform small particles to a heat engine. Moreover, moving materials such as a column of liquid may be subjected to high internal pressure and temperature for creating physical and chemical changes.

5. Use Of Computer Technology In Behavioral Assessments, Thomas R. Kratochwill, Elizabeth J. Doll, W. Patrick Dickson

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

Major developments in the behavioral assessment field have occurred over the past decade (e.g., Barlow, 1981 ; Ciminero, Calhoun, & Adams , 1986; Haynes & Wilson, 1979; Mash & Terdal, 1988a). The use of computer technology by behavioral assessors has occurred, but this is a relatively recent development (Kratochwill, Doll, & Dickson, 1986; Romanczyk, 1986). Consider, for example, that behavioral assessment texts include little discussion of computer applications and many articles restrict discussion of behavioral assessment to observational measures (see Cone & Hawkins, 1977, for an exception). In psychology and education, issues of journals have been devoted to computer applications …

6. The Use Of The Computer In The Practice Of Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, Lyle F. Schoenfeldt, Jorge L. Mendoza

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

The rapid proliferation of computer technology, in the form of mainframe computers, networks of interconnected machines, and stand-alone personal computers, is having a profound effect on many areas of life. As a result of the spread of computer equipment to offices, homes, and educational institutions; the variety of software applications has grown at an unprecedented rate. With this as background, it should be no surprise that computers have assumed an increasing role in professional practice, including applications in providing services in the area of industrial and organizational psychology.

Industrial-organizational psychologists function in a variety of settings, but primarily provide human …

3. Assessment Of Val Id Ity In Computer-Based Test Interpretations, Kevin L. Moreland

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

The use of computers to interpret psychological tests is a "hot" topic, both within psychology and without. It is hot in the sense of giving rise to an increasing number of books and articles (e.g., Butcher, 1985, 1987; Eyde, 1987; Krug, 1987). It is hot in the sense of giving rise to an ever-increasing number of business enterprises (compare any recent APA Monitor with an issue from 1981). It is hot in the sense of capturing the attention of the news media (e.g., Petterson, 1983). And it is hot in the sense of giving rise to increasing controversy within psychology …

10. Guidelines For Computer Testing, Bert F. Green Jan 1991

10. Guidelines For Computer Testing, Bert F. Green

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

Testing by computer is big business. Many companies are offering software enabling a psychologist to test a client by seating him or her at a computer terminal and pressing Return. The software presents the instructions on the screen, guides the test taker through some sample items to see if the instructions are understood, and then presents the test, automatically recording the responses. After one or more tests have been completed, the equipment scores the responses, and delivers test scores. But it doesn't stop there. It then continues by printing out a complete test interpretation in fairly well-constructed narrative prose. The …

What To Look For And Why When Buying A Telecommunications Switch Jan 1991

What To Look For And Why When Buying A Telecommunications Switch

ACUTA: Other Publications

There are three characteristics of institutions of higher education that have a strong

impact on telecommunications:

. Campus Environment

. Multiple Service Populations

. Limited Budgets

Each characteristic translates into requirements for an effective telecommunication

system.

To Serve the Campus Environment

A campus is usually the first image associated with the word "college" or "university." Typically, institutions of higher education are housed in several buildings which may be fairly close together, or spread over some distance, perhaps reaching across a city or even a state.

To serve the campus user, a system must provide feature transparency, regardless of location. Small …

G91-1062 Termites (Revised March 2002), Shripat T. Kamble

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide provides information on biology and control of subterranean termites.

Termites feed on wood and serve an important function in nature by converting dead trees into organic matter. Unfortunately, the wood in buildings is equally appetizing to termites and they cause serious damage to residential and commercial buildings. Two species of subterranean termites are found in Nebraska and both species have similar habitats.

4. The Validity Of Computerbased Test Interpretations Of The Mmpi, Lorraine D. Eyde, Dennis M. Kowal, Francis J. Fishburne Jr.

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

With advances in computer technology, computer-based test interpretations (CBTI), first developed in the early 1960s (Fowler, 1985), have proliferated (Eyde & Kowal, 1987). CBTIs have been developed and marketed for a variety of tests used in clinical, counseling, educational, and employment settings. The largest number of commercial CBTI systems are available for the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI; Krug, 1987), the most widely used inventory of its kind in the world, which has a continuously growing literature of more than 8,000 books and articles (Holden, 1986; Lanyon, 1984).

According to Harris:
CBTI refers to the automation of a set of …

9. Legal Issues In Computerized Psychological Testing, Donald N. Bersoff, Paul J. Hofer

The Computer and the Decision-Making Process

A decade ago a scholar writing in a legal journal asked the question, "Can/Should Computers Replace Judges?" (D'Amato, 1977). The article explored problems involved in developing computer systems capable of making the difficult assessments and judgments required in judicial decision making. In discussing these problems, the author quoted extensively from Joseph Weizenbaum, who in a well-known critique of computerized psychotherapy, sagely asserted, "Since we do not now have any ways of making computers wise, we ought not now to give computers tasks that demand wisdom" (Weizenbaum, 1976). Nevertheless, the legal scholar concluded that any humanistic misgivings about computerized decision making …

13.2.8. Rescue And Rehabilitation Of Oiled Birds, Sallie Welte, Lynne Frink Jan 1991

13.2.8. Rescue And Rehabilitation Of Oiled Birds, Sallie Welte, Lynne Frink

Waterfowl Management Handbook

Oil contamination of waterfowl and seabirds has been documented as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in birds for more than 50 years. Each year more than one million birds may die from oil contamination in North Atlantic waters alone; worldwide mortality is unknown.

Of special concern is that many of the seabirds commonly affected are not prolific breeders, and assessment of each species’ status is handicapped by the difficulty of accurately monitoring trends in marine bird populations.

Oiled bird rehabilitation is an intensive, crisis-oriented response, requiring an experienced management agency, specialized medical expertise, stockpiles of specially designed equipment, …

Molecular Epidemiologic Techniques In Analysis Of Epidemic And Endemic Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1 Strains, Nancy A. Strockbine, Julie Parsonnet, Katherine Greene, Julia A. Kiehlbauch, I. Kaye Wachsmuth Jan 1991

Molecular Epidemiologic Techniques In Analysis Of Epidemic And Endemic Shigella Dysenteriae Type 1 Strains, Nancy A. Strockbine, Julie Parsonnet, Katherine Greene, Julia A. Kiehlbauch, I. Kaye Wachsmuth

United States Public Health Resources

During 1988 the number of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 infections reported in the United States increased fivefold. To determine if recent isolates from Mexico were related to those that caused epidemics of dysentery worldwide, Southern hybridization analysis was done with Shiga toxin and ribosomal RNA gene probes. Western hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere strains differed by the size of a single EcoRI fragment carrying the Shiga toxin genes. Three ribosomal DNA (rDNA) patterns were observed, which correlated with the strain;s continental origin for 81 of 83 isolates tested. Together the Shiga toxin and rDNA probe results indicated that recent Mexican …

Use Of A Simulation Model To Evaluate The Influence Of Reproductive Performance And Management Decisions On Net Income In Beef Production, L. A. Werth, S. M. Azzam, Merlyn K. Nielsen, J. E. Kinder Jan 1991

Use Of A Simulation Model To Evaluate The Influence Of Reproductive Performance And Management Decisions On Net Income In Beef Production, L. A. Werth, S. M. Azzam, Merlyn K. Nielsen, J. E. Kinder

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A stochastic dynamic model of reproduction and a deterministic cow-herd economic simulation model were used to evaluate how management decisions and reproductive performance interact to influence net income in a cow-calf operation (1,000 cows) for 1 yr of production. The stochastic model was used to determine herd performance when length of breeding season (45, 70, or 120 d) interacted with three postpartum intervals of an estrus (48, 65, or 90 d) and three conception rates at first service (60, 70, or 80%). Short, moderate, and long postpartum intervals were used to reflect differences in reproductive performance. In addition, replacement heifers …

Secondary Structure Of The Ribonuclease H Domain Of The Human Immunodeficiency Virus Reverse Transcriptase In Solution Using Three-Dimensional Double And Triple Resonance Heteronuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Robert Powers, G. Marius Clore, Ad Bax, Daniel S. Garrett, Stephen J. Stahl, Paul T. Wingfield, Angela M. Gronenborn

Robert Powers Publications

The solution structure of the ribonuclease H domain of HIV-l reverse transcriptase has been investigated by three-dimensional double and triple resonance heteronuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The domain studied has 138 residues and comprises residues 427 to 560 of the 66 kDa reverse transcriptase with an additional four residues at the N terminus. Initial studies on the wild-type protein were hindered by severe differential line broadening, presumably due to conformational averaging. Mutation of the single tryptophan residue located in a loop at position 113 (position 535 in the reverse transcriptase sequence) to an alanine resulted in much improved spectral properties with …

Integrating Cognitive Ethology With Cognitive Psychology, Sonja I. Yoerg, Alan Kamil Jan 1991

Integrating Cognitive Ethology With Cognitive Psychology, Sonja I. Yoerg, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Cognitive ethology has been defined by Griffin (1978,1981, 1984) as the study of mental experiences in animals, restricting the domain of the field to phenomena thought to reveal intentionality, awareness, and conscious thinking. We argue that attempts to study these processes, while revealing impressive behavioral complexity, have proven unsuccessful in establishing the importance of mental experiences in determining animal behavior primarily because of the intractability of the problem. We suggest a different approach that draws upon the rich theory and sophisticated methodology of human and animal cognitive psychology while retaining an ecological and evolutionary perspective. Brief accounts of the conceptual …

Photosynthetic Electron Transport In Genetically Altered Photosystem Ii Reaction Centers Of Chloroplasts, Robin A. Roffey, John H. Golebeck, C. Russ Hille, Richard T. Sayre Jan 1991

Photosynthetic Electron Transport In Genetically Altered Photosystem Ii Reaction Centers Of Chloroplasts, Robin A. Roffey, John H. Golebeck, C. Russ Hille, Richard T. Sayre

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Using a cotransformation system to identify chloroplast transformants in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, we converted histidine-195 of the photosystem H reaction center D1 protein to a tyrosine residue. The mutants were characterized by a reduced quantum efficiency for photosynthetic oxygen evolution, which varied in a pH-dependent manner, a reduced capacity to oxidize artificial donors to photosystem II, and P680+) reduction kinetics (microsecond) that were essentially similar to wild type. In addition, a dark-stable radical was detected by ESR in mutant photosystem II particles but not in wild-type particles. This radical was similar in g value and lineshape to chlorophyll …
