Notice Of Jelly Fishes In The Carboniferous Of Nebraska, Medusina Walcotti, Erwin H. Barbour Jan 1914

Notice Of Jelly Fishes In The Carboniferous Of Nebraska, Medusina Walcotti, Erwin H. Barbour

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

In visiting the quarries of the State, certain quadripartite objects suggesting the form of jelly fishes have long attracted the writer's attention. They are large and coarse, and were assumed to be imitative concretions. However, the total number observed seems to strengthen the probability that they are of organic origin. In the fall of 1913, while conducting a field class through the Burlington Quarries, located about two miles northwest of South Bend, they were noted again in a new locality, and three specimens were obtained. Two of these were unusual examples, and showed sufficient structure to identify them with the …

Synopsis Of The Conjugate Algae-Zygophyceae, Charles E. Bessey Jan 1914

Synopsis Of The Conjugate Algae-Zygophyceae, Charles E. Bessey

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A dozen or more years ago the writer prepared a series of papers on these plants, which were published in volumes 21, 22 and 23 of these Transactions, and now it seems that time enough has elapsed to warrant another paper dealing with the same group, and including such revisions as are now made necessary because of our better knowledge of their structure, and the structure of the nearly related plants.

Studies On The Relation Of The Nonavailable Water Of The Soil To The Hygroscopic Coefficient, F. J. Always Jun 1913

Studies On The Relation Of The Nonavailable Water Of The Soil To The Hygroscopic Coefficient, F. J. Always

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

These experiments were carried out in connection with and subordinate to various soil investigations, the object being to determine the relation of the final water content of the soil to the hygroscopic coefficient and to determine to what extent the moisture was removed from the different portions of the subsoil not penetrated by plant roots.

Alfalfa Inoculation Tests, C. W. Pugsley Apr 1913

Alfalfa Inoculation Tests, C. W. Pugsley

University of Nebraska Historical Extension: Bulletin

During the winter of 1909-10 an effort was made to secure cooperators among the farmers of Nebraska to test the value of inoculating newly seeded alfalfa fields. This investigation was 8uggested by reports received from correspondents during 1909. The names of farmers willing to cooperate were secured by correspondence and by conferences at the various Short Courses held during that year.

In the spring of 1910 about thirty-five farmers, located largely near Broken Bow, Cambridge, Franklin, and Blair, agreed to test the effect of cultures sent by the United States Department of Agriculture, soil from well-established alfalfa fields, and farm …

The Inheritance Of Quantitative Characters In Maize, R. A. Emerson, E. M. East Apr 1913

The Inheritance Of Quantitative Characters In Maize, R. A. Emerson, E. M. East

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The experiments conducted by one of the writers were begun at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station at New Haven in 1906 and removed to the Bussey Institution of Harvard University at Forest Hills, Massachusetts, in 1909. The materials employed in this study consisted principally of crosses of Tom Thumb pop with Black Mexican sweet and of Watson flint with Leaming dent. The number of rows per ear were noted in several other crosses, the parents of which are listed later in this paper. The experiments of the other writer were begun at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station at Lincoln in …

A Dry Rot Of The Irish Potato Tuber, E. Mead Wilcox, George K.K. Link, Venus W. Pool Mar 1913

A Dry Rot Of The Irish Potato Tuber, E. Mead Wilcox, George K.K. Link, Venus W. Pool

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The first specimens of the dry rot herein described were received by the department of Agricultural Botany during the winter of 1907-1908 from western Nebraska. A preliminary survey of the situation showed clearly the importance of this new rot, and an exhaustive investigation of the disease was outlined and has been continued to the present time. The present publication gives the results secured to date in our investigation of this disease.

The Oregon Recruit Expedition, Albert Watkins Jan 1913

The Oregon Recruit Expedition, Albert Watkins

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

The object of early travel from the Missouri River to the region beyond the Rocky Mountains was, first, exploration, as in the example of the expeditions of Lewis and Clark and Fremont; second, trapping and trading; third, the colonization of Oregon; fourth, the reaching of the California and intra-montane gold mines; fifth, the transportation of soldiers and military supplies for the protection of these enterprises from hostile Indians. Prior to the period of transcontinental railroad-building there were several rival experimental routes to the northerly part of those regions and more particularly to Oregon; but the Platte River route, known as …

Magnacum Confusione, Philo M. Buck, Jr. Jan 1913

Magnacum Confusione, Philo M. Buck, Jr.

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

"--And I carried away from college a suit case of clothes and a packing case of notebooks. These were all I had left after paying my commencement bills, for the notebooks had no commercial value, nor any other, so far as my use of them has shown, as I have never looked in them since. And isn't that a fair allegory of your college education?"

Jones was speaking, a little bitterly for him, for usually he was the most sunny of high-school principals. We had been exchanging reminiscences during the last courses of an excellent luncheon served by a domestic …

The Intrusions Of Science, S. B. Gass Jan 1913

The Intrusions Of Science, S. B. Gass

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

It is not infrequently related that human arrogance was sadly but not unjustly rebuked by Darwin and the evolutionary science of the Nineteenth Century. And indeed from the point of view of pure science there was arrogance in an assumption that the enveloping intelligence of the universe looked upon mankind as its terminus ad quem to which all parts were subordinate--in an assumption that men were made in the likeness of an over-ruling power that worked by ways which, paradoxically, even that likeness was fain to call mysterious and incomprehensible. Science seemed to make these ways less mysterious, less incomprehensible; …

The Possible Origin Of Mutations In Somatic Cells, R. A. Emerson Jan 1913

The Possible Origin Of Mutations In Somatic Cells, R. A. Emerson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

That mutations are accompanied by some change in the germ-plasm is, I take it, indisputable. Have we, however, any reason to suppose that the change takes place within the germ cells? I am not sure, as a matter of fact, that genetists in general regard the gametes as the place of origin of mutations. It is true, however, that experiments in the artificial production of mutations in plants have been limited largely to treatments of the ovaries from about the time of the reduction division to about the time of fertilization. This suggests a belief on the part of investigators …

Some Of The Next Steps In Botanical Science, Charles E. Bessey Jan 1913

Some Of The Next Steps In Botanical Science, Charles E. Bessey

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

When one who has worked long in any

field of science speaks before an audience

such as this he is expected to say something

about the condition of his branch of science

when he began work with meager and

poorly adapted apparatus, to contrast it

with its greatly improved condition to-day,

and to dwell with pride upon the finely

equipped laboratories with costly apparatus

especially designed for particular

experiments, to be found by the twentieth

century scientific student. And 1 must

confess that the temptation to do so was

one difficult to resist, for we who have

grown old in …

Notice Of Newly Discovered Eurypterids In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour Nov 1912

Notice Of Newly Discovered Eurypterids In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A BED of Eurypterids has just been discovered by the Nebraska Geological Survey in the Carboniferous shales of southeastern Nebraska, and thus a new locality is added to the list for the United States. Such localities are somewhat rare, and notice of any and every new one must be acceptable.

The Carboniferous outcrops are confined to some eight or ten counties in the extreme southeastern corner of the state, and though covered heavily by glacial clays, bold exposures occur in proximity to the bolder streams, especially the Missouri River. About a mile south of Peru, on the Missouri River front, …
