Management Of Irrigated Land: Report Of The Scottsbluff Experiment Substation, Mitchell, Nebraska, Fritz Knorr Jun 1915

Management Of Irrigated Land: Report Of The Scottsbluff Experiment Substation, Mitchell, Nebraska, Fritz Knorr

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

SUMMARY.
Seepage may be prevented to some extent by employing proper methods of irrigation. Overirrigation may have a tendency to water-log the soil.
A small head of water, properly used, will irrigate more land and do better work than a large head gone over the land hurriedly.
The distance of irrigation ditches should be such that the water may travel between the ditches in about two hours.
If land can be irrigated in the fall with the same care that crops are irrigated in the summer, there is an advantage to fall irrigation. If water cannot be properly cared for …

Corn Silage And Alfalfa Hay For Beef Production, Ralph K. Bliss, C. B. Lee May 1915

Corn Silage And Alfalfa Hay For Beef Production, Ralph K. Bliss, C. B. Lee

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

SUMMARY.

1. A ration of corn and alfalfa hay produced the cheapest gains of any ration used. Furthermore, the steers fed corn and alfalfa hay made as rapid gains as did the steers on any other ration.
2. Had the alfalfa hay used in the first experiment cost $20 per ton, the average profit on the three lots receiving alfalfa would have been 15 per cent greater than the profit on the best one of the three lots not receiving alfalfa.
3. Cold pressed cottonseed cake did not give as good results, as regards either rate of gain or economy …

Raising The Dairy Calf, E. G. Woodward Apr 1915

Raising The Dairy Calf, E. G. Woodward

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

There are in Nebraska more than 600,000 dairy cows. The average period of usefulness of the dairy caw is not more than eight years. This means that to maintain the dairy herds of Nebraska at their present size between 70,000 and 80,000 heifer calves must be raised each year. To mate these cows properly with dairy bred bulls will require the rearing of about 8,000 bulls yearly. Aside from the necessity of maintaining the herds at their present size, the importance of calf raising to the Nebraska dairyman lies in the fact that this is the surest and most satisfactory …

Soy Beans And Cowpeas, Theodore A. Kiesselbach Apr 1915

Soy Beans And Cowpeas, Theodore A. Kiesselbach

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

In recent years considerable interest has been manifest in Nebraska concerning soy beans and cowpeas; and numerous inquiries regarding them have come to the Experiment Station. The cowpea is regarded as a profitable crop chiefly in the cotton states, but has some importance as far north as Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. On the other hand, the soy bean is adapted primarily to the Northern States between the regions best suited for cowpeas in the South and Canada field peas in the North. The Central States in which they are most commonly grown are Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan, and …

A Handbook Of Nebraska Grasses : With Illustrated Keys For Their Identification, Together With A General Account Of Their Structure And Economic Importance, E. Mead Wilcox, George K. K. Link, Venus W. Pool

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The true grasses belong to the one family Poaceae, often called Gramineae, and constitute a very well defined natural group of plants. This family comprises upward of 3,000 species distributed among almost 300 genera. From the economic point of view the family is of supreme importance thru the fact that here belong the cereals, which supply a large part of the food of man, and the forage grasses which are so important as feed for our domesticated animals.

The genera and species are for the most part separated by artificial characters—a fact which renders their study and identification extremely difficult …

Otacariasis In The Bighorn, Henry Baldwin Ward Mar 1915

Otacariasis In The Bighorn, Henry Baldwin Ward

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Summary

The ear of a mountain sheep at Estes Park, Colorado, USA, was found to be heavily infested with a Sarcoptid mite which was not the common scab mite of domesticated sheep but is new in this country.

This form is similar to a mite found in the ear of goats in the Pyrenees and in the Congo. Nevertheless there is reason to consider it a new species and it is named Psoroptes cervinae.

The complaint to which it gives rise is likely to be serious if its effects are like those of the related European form. The Bighorn …

The Habits, Life History, And Structure Of A Blood-Sucking Muscid Larva (Protocalliphora Azurea), Albert Francis Coutant Mar 1915

The Habits, Life History, And Structure Of A Blood-Sucking Muscid Larva (Protocalliphora Azurea), Albert Francis Coutant

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

While studying the blood parasites Halteridium and Proteosoma, and the Filaria of the common crow (Corvus americana), my attention was attracted by an external parasite of some young nestlings which were brought into the laboratory. Observations on this parasite, which proved to be the larva of Protocalliphora azurea (Fall.), form the basis of this paper. The parasite is the immature form of one of the so-called "blue-bottle" or flesh-flies, whose larvae are generally regarded as useful scavengers. More careful observations on the life-histories of many species, however, have shown that they may be, and often are, parasites …

Emerson As A Romanticist, Louise Pound Jan 1915

Emerson As A Romanticist, Louise Pound

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

It was the romanticists who tended to write poetry of “autobiography,” who inquired of themselves concerning themselves, and assumed that the world was interested in what they found. Nor was the habit of self-consciousness regarding the poetic office let drop by their successors. That the words poet and poetry were so often on Emerson’s lips would be evidence enough to students of literature, in its changing temper and shifting modes, of his probable localization in time. It is also evidence of his relation to certain European movements of thought to which he gave—comparatively late in their currency and much tempered …

In Defence Of The Professor Who Publishes, Alvin S. Johnson Jan 1915

In Defence Of The Professor Who Publishes, Alvin S. Johnson

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

At the present time, when our whole educational system is under criticism, it would be remarkable if any tendency in university life were to escape the searching scrutiny of laity and schoolmen. University ideals and university organization have been exploited in books and articles without number. Everybody has taken part in the work of defining the respective powers of president and board, of determining the scope of student self-government, and the appropriate relations of the university to the community at large. With these large problems discussed to the point of universal exhaustion, we may well turn our attention to others, …

Some Legal Aspects Of The Invasion Of Belgium, Sumner Allen Jan 1915

Some Legal Aspects Of The Invasion Of Belgium, Sumner Allen

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

In the fifth century before the Christian era the two powerful states of Greece, Athens and Sparta, were at war. Greek culture was then at its highest level, and Athens was the centre-in the phrase of Pericles, "the school of Hellas." Its attainments in art, letters, and government were a source of pride and the basis of the Athenian claim of superiority. During the progress of that long and terrible war, the Athenians conceived that the neutrality of a small colony on the little island of Melos was a military disadvantage, and an army was sent to reduce it to …

The Mantle Of Browning, Hardin Craig Jan 1915

The Mantle Of Browning, Hardin Craig

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

As one grows older one becomes sadly conscious that there are problems in one's life and in society for which there is no solution in the poetry of Robert Browning. A very great deal has happened since Robert Browning wrote; and what he tells us to do is not the thing we want to do, and his presentation of the situation in which we stand is not one that commends itself as entirely adequate. Part of the great outcry for the practical with its too wholesale rejection of the idealistic teachings of the last century, is a definite feeling that …

Nietzsche, P. H. Frye Jan 1915

Nietzsche, P. H. Frye

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

On account of the attention which Nietzsche has been attracting of late, the occasion seems a favourable one for reviewing once more his life and work. In a letter to one of his acquaintances, written in March, 1884, he himself prophesies with the proverbial modesty of genius that" in fifty years, perhaps, will the eyes of some few (or of one, for it requires genius) be opened to what has been done through me. For the present, however, it is not only difficult but quite impossible (in accordance with the laws of 'perspective') to speak of me publicly without falling …

French Opinion Of Our Civil War, Louis Martin Sears Jan 1915

French Opinion Of Our Civil War, Louis Martin Sears

Mid-West Quarterly (1913–1918)

In these days when America is the spectator of world war, it is of increased interest to notice the views of Europe when America was the battle ground itself. An awakening interest in this study has recently impressed upon our public the paramount importance of the English attitude toward the war; and our vast debt to Cobden, Bright, and John Stuart Mill and other English Liberals has stirred the national gratitude. The Liberals of France played an equal role. Their voice, not loud but deep, operated to curb the opportunism and militancy of Napoleon III and his cabinet of adventurers. …
