Determining The Sex Of Day Old Chicks, H. E. Alder Mar 1935

Determining The Sex Of Day Old Chicks, H. E. Alder

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

More than 2,000 years ago people were interested in determining the sex of the embryo in hatching eggs and the sex of day-old chicks. No method of determining the sex of day-old chicks (except of course in sex-linked chicks) was of the slightest value until the Japanese method was discovered and developed. About 1925 Japanese scientists discovered the presence of a rudimentary copulatory organ located on the ventral rim of the cloaca which was present in all day-old males and only a few day-old females.

Annual Fodder And Silage Crops For Nebraska, W. E. Lyness, T. A. Kiesselbach Mar 1935

Annual Fodder And Silage Crops For Nebraska, W. E. Lyness, T. A. Kiesselbach

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The present shortage in the seed supply of all standard varieties of annual forage crops has created a special demand for information concerning their relative productivity and the possible use of substitute crops. This circular reports the yields secured from such crops at the Experiment Station, in an effort to help farmers reach a decision as to which crops should be grown this year for roughage, and which ones especially should have their seed supply increased for use in future years. Feed value and production costs as well as yields should be taken into consideration by the grower.

Forty-Eighth Annual Report Of The Agricultural Experiment Station Of Nebraska, February 1, 1935, W.W. Burr Jan 1935

Forty-Eighth Annual Report Of The Agricultural Experiment Station Of Nebraska, February 1, 1935, W.W. Burr

Agricultural Research Division: News and Annual Reports

This report differs from previous reports in two respects: it covers experimental work up to January 1, 1935, and it includes brief abstracts of publications since the last report. Previously most of the report dealt with work done before the end of the fiscal year; that is, work done between June 30 and January 1 was not reported until over a year later, for the most part. The present report corrects that defect, and in addition the abstracts of publications will make the report useful as a reference guide to published matter.

The projects are discussed under subject headings and …

Comparison Of Runoff And Erosion In Prairie, Pasture, And Cultivated Land, J. E. Weaver, Wm. C. Noll Jan 1935

Comparison Of Runoff And Erosion In Prairie, Pasture, And Cultivated Land, J. E. Weaver, Wm. C. Noll

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

Soil erosion resulting from runoff water has come to be recognized as a national menace. The determination and evaluation of all factors influencing runoff and erosion are studies of fundamental importance, especially insofar as they may be made to yield information upon methods of control over this insidious tendency of washing away the land.

"Fully 75 per cent of the crop-producing and grazing areas of the United States is sloping enough to set in motion, moderately or violently, these wasteful processes of accelerated soil-removal and excessive runoff. That 35 million acres of formerly cultivated land have been essentially ruined by …

Nebraska Folk Cures, Pauline Monette Black Jan 1935

Nebraska Folk Cures, Pauline Monette Black

University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism

Folk cures form a conspicuous part of Nebraska lore. Nebraska pioneers from many states and many countries brought with them certain remedies which they believed particularly efficacious, and which became a tradition in families or communities throughout the state. The cures in the following collection have come directly from the residents of the state and are not limited to any specific locality. They have been recorded as nearly as possible just as the informants gave them. Some alterations have been made in diction and sentence structure to clarify ambiguity. The collection is doubtless incomplete, but it lists, I believe, most …

Quantity Of Living Plant Materials In Prairie Soils In Relation To Run-Off And Soil Erosion, J. E. Weaver, George W. Harmon Jan 1935

Quantity Of Living Plant Materials In Prairie Soils In Relation To Run-Off And Soil Erosion, J. E. Weaver, George W. Harmon

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

The menace of soil erosion did not appear in the west until much of the prairie was broken for cropping or weakened by continuous overgrazing. The grassland sod is a great conserver of rainfall; the amount of run-off water is relatively small, and the soil is firmly held against the forces of erosion. This study is concerned with the role that the living underground plant parts play in promoting the absorption of water by the soil, and especially their importance in reducing run-off. Their holding of the soil against the forces of water erosion has been experimentally determined. A study …

Notes On The Owls Found In Lincoln County, Nebraska, Wilson Tout

Papers in Ornithology

During more than a quarter of a century I have been making notes and collecting information about the Owls of Lincoln county and it seemed an opportune time to put this information into print that it might be available to those who are interested in birds and serve as a basis for further study and amplification. Lincoln County is not usually considered a favorable place for Owls to reside on account of the absence of heavy timber over most of its area. But the nine varieties listed will probably be extended as more observations are made by those who are …

The Relation Of Drouth To Water-Use In Nebraska, G. E. Condra Nov 1934

The Relation Of Drouth To Water-Use In Nebraska, G. E. Condra

George E. Condra Publications

Three severe drouths have occurred in Nebraska and adjacent states within the past eighty years, and less severe ones have come at moderately regular intervals. Their influence on the agricultural development of the state is well known, but their relation to water supply in general is not so well understood. This paper is a brief review of the relation of drouth to soil moisture, surace water, and groundwater supplies.

Controlling Kidney Worms In Swine In The Southern States, Benjamin Schwartz Nov 1934

Controlling Kidney Worms In Swine In The Southern States, Benjamin Schwartz

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The kidney worm of swine is one of the most serious obstacles to profitable swine. production in the. South.. Since these parasites are located in the liver, kidney fat, kidney tissue proper, blood vessels, and other parts of the body outside the digestive system, they cannot be removed by any known medicinal treatment. The only hopeful outlook for the control of these parasites is a system of management designed to protect hogs from the infective larvae of the worms. These larvae develop from eggs eliminated with the urine of infected hogs. (Fig. 1.) Larvae of the kidney worm are prevalent …

Further Studies On The Survival Time Of The Bovine Tubercle Bacillus In Soil, Soil And Dung, In Dung And On Grass, With Experiments On Feeding Guinea-Pigs And Calves On Grass Artificially Infected With Bovine Tubercle Bacilli, E. C. G. Maddock

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

IN a previous paper (Maddock, 1933) it was reported that when soil, soil and dung mixtures and dung were infected by adding fine emulsions of bovine tubercular material, virulent tubercle bacilli could be recovered after 178 days' exposure under field conditions. The experiments reported in the aforesaid paper were carried out in 1931, but it was felt that weight would be added to the results if the experiments could be repeated in a year of differing weather conditions.

Stability Of Climax Prairie And Some Environmental Changes Resulting From Breaking, J. E. Weaver, Evan Flory Oct 1934

Stability Of Climax Prairie And Some Environmental Changes Resulting From Breaking, J. E. Weaver, Evan Flory

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Continued study of the great midcontinental grasslands of North America throughout a period of years has impressed the writers with the high degree of stability of the climax prairie. This phenomenon has been carefully considered in a study of the types of prairie in the Missouri Valley over an area of several thousand square miles centering in eastern Nebraska but including five neighboring states. Present studies on the deterioration of the prairie under the impact of grazing, and changes in edaphic and atmospheric environment with the breaking and cropping of the land have further emphasized the stabilizing influence of a …

The Vitamin E Content Of Certain Dairy Feeds, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis Aug 1934

The Vitamin E Content Of Certain Dairy Feeds, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A study was made of the vitamin E content of each of the ingredients of our dairy herd ration, excepting the salt, lime, and bone meal. Female rats which were able to conceive but unable to reproduce when fed a diet deficient in vitamin E were fed the various feeds as a source of vitamin E during a second breeding period. The presence of vitamin E in a feed was thus shown by the ability of the female to cast a litter. The vitamin E content of bran, shorts, linseed oil meal, hominy feed, white corn, yellow corn, cottonseed meal, …

Some Observations On Humidity And Weight Loss In The Incubation Of Turkey Eggs, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson Aug 1934

Some Observations On Humidity And Weight Loss In The Incubation Of Turkey Eggs, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

1. Turkey eggs which are incubated under chicken hens lose from 11 to 13 per cent of their original weight during the first 24 days of incubation. Small turkey eggs lose relatively more weight than large eggs incubated under the same conditions. 2. Considerable variation was observed in the weight loss during the first 24 days of incubation of eggs of approximately the same size when incubated in the same environment. The range was from 7 to 24 per cent of the original weight. Differences in shell texture may account for these variations, although care was taken to select only …
