History Of The Native Vegetation Of Western Kansas During Seven Years Of Continuous Drought, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver Jan 1942

History Of The Native Vegetation Of Western Kansas During Seven Years Of Continuous Drought, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

When the pioneers came from the East to make new homes in the Great Plains region, they found a dense cover of native vegetation. It was disturbed only by buffaloes, prairie dogs, other plains animals, Indians, and prairie fires. The Federal Government required that a certain amount of land be broken and put under cultivation, whether the land was obtained as a homestead or as a timber claim (McArdle and Costello, 1936).

The practice of the settlers was to break up a small tract of the prairie on which they could grow enough winter feed to sustain their cattle, horses, …

Threonine Deficiency In Hydrolysates Of Zein Prepared By Autoclaving, Raymond Borchers, John R. Totter, Clarence P. Berg Jan 1942

Threonine Deficiency In Hydrolysates Of Zein Prepared By Autoclaving, Raymond Borchers, John R. Totter, Clarence P. Berg

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

In a previous paper (Borchers and Berg, 1942) we showed that

autoclaving zein with sulfuric acid longer than necessary for complete

hydrolysis causes destruction and racemization; either of

these might account for the failure of such a hydrolysate to

promote growth in young rats when substituted for a hvdrolysate,

prepared by refiuxing, in a diet which produced moderate growth.

It seemed to us that this deterioration in the dietary protein might

well be the result primarily of essential amino acid deficiencies

which could be detected and overcome by appropriate supplementation.

Because threonine is known to be present in zein in …

Berg, Newton E. Whitman

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The amount of tryptophane required for maintenance and growth is small (2). When an excess is supplied to some animals, kynurenic acid is excreted (3) and, under certain conditions, kynurenine also (4). Although these are quantitatively the most important of the known metabolic products of tryptophane, the amounts excreted in extensive tests in the dog and rabbit have usually accounted for less than half, more often for less than a third, of the tryptophane administered (4-6).

The Origin Of Daemonelix, Alvin Leonard Lugn Oct 1941

The Origin Of Daemonelix, Alvin Leonard Lugn

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Attention is called to the controversy of some years ago over the origin of the "Devil's Corkscrews." The problem may have appeared unimportant then, but now a correct understanding of the paleoecology of Harrison time may hinge on the explanation of these strange "fossils." The characteristics of Daemonelix are briefly reviewed, they are compared to the lianas of the modern tropical jungle, and the postulated conditions of Harrison sedimentation are believed to supply an adequate explanation for the presence of fossil rodent remains in the Daemonelices. The possibility of a vegetal origin of these fossils is believed to be demonstrated.

Babcock Testing And Other Methods Of Analyzing Dairy Products, L. K. Crowe Sep 1941

Babcock Testing And Other Methods Of Analyzing Dairy Products, L. K. Crowe

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The manufacturing of dairy products on a commercial scale began about the middle of the nineteenth century and was greatly stimulated by the development of the centrifugal cream separator in the late eighties. The invention of the Babcock test in the early nineties overcame some of the difficulties that had developed in paying for milk upon its butterfat content, since it was early recognized that milk varied widely in that respect.

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs Sep 1941

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

In the dairy industry increasing attention is being paid to the question of quality of products. The well established system of buying and selling butter and cheese on the basis of quality by score or grade is practiced in the principal markets of the world. The other dairy products, while not marketed by score, are receiving more and more attention in this respect. As more information becomes available and the judging better standardized, other dairy products will doubtless be sold by grade.

Hunting Scenes On Roman Glass In The Rhineland, Michael Ginsburg Aug 1941

Hunting Scenes On Roman Glass In The Rhineland, Michael Ginsburg

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

THE Roman conquerors who settled down to colonize a new province always tried to surround themselves with a new life reminiscent of the life they had left behind in Rome. When the Roman Empire began to expand northward beyond the Alps, first in Gaul and then later in Western Germany, among the many articles brought over by the Romans for their daily use and unknown until then in the new countries were objects made of glass which were part of the common paraphernalia of life in Italy. First, glassware was imported from Italy and those provinces where its production had …

Regeneration Of Native Midwestern Pastures Under Protection, J. E. Weaver, W. W. Hansen Jun 1941

Regeneration Of Native Midwestern Pastures Under Protection, J. E. Weaver, W. W. Hansen

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The origin of native midwestern pastures from virgin prairie and the degeneration of the prairie under long-continued grazing have been outlined in some detail in a previous bulletin (Weaver & Hansen 1941). During the last four years much study has been given to the converse phenomenon of the regeneration of native midwestern pastures when grazing animals were excluded. This universal phenomenon of the return of vegetation to something of its former natural condition is summed up in the term plant succession (Clements 1928). In connection with pastures derived from true prairie, it is of great practical as well as scientific …

Native Midwestern Pastures: Their Origin, Composition, And Degeneration, J. E. Weaver, W. W. Hansen Feb 1941

Native Midwestern Pastures: Their Origin, Composition, And Degeneration, J. E. Weaver, W. W. Hansen

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

According to Doctor J. E. Weaver and Mr. W. W. Hansen the purpose of this bulletin is to present certain facts involved in range and pasture management by outlining in some detail the fundamental phenomenon of vegetational change upon which all rational pasture studies must be based. They maintain that the native prairie vegetation is an organic entity in close adjustment with soil and climate, which has developed gradually to its present condition of dynamic stabilization. When the prairie is grazed and trampled, various changes occur, the nature and extent of which vary somewhat directly with the degree of disturbance, …

Wildlife Of The Atlantic Coast Salt Marshes, W. L. Mcatee Jan 1941

Wildlife Of The Atlantic Coast Salt Marshes, W. L. Mcatee

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Salt marshes of the Atlantic coast have been formed under the opposed tendencies of sinking of the land and of its upbuilding by silt and sand. The plants that form the marshes occupy zones largely determined by the degree of inundation by tides. Eelgrass entirely submerged, smooth cordgrass regularly washed by the tide, and marsh hay covered only by exceptionally high water are characteristic plants. Each zone is the home or feeding area of certain kinds of wildlife. The appearance, distribution, and habits of the more common species are described, and general wildlife conservation is urged. This circular, which is …

Common Birds Of Southeastern United States In Relation To Agriculture, F. E. L. Beal, W. L. Mcatee, E. R. Kalmbach Jan 1941

Common Birds Of Southeastern United States In Relation To Agriculture, F. E. L. Beal, W. L. Mcatee, E. R. Kalmbach

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

From a purely practical point of view the most important of the relations of native birds to man are the economic. The esthetic value of birds is great, greater indeed than that of any other group of animals; and that this is a real and especially a treasured value is not to be denied. But it is in their relation to insect and other enemies of crops that birds are most directly associated with the welfare of mankind, and their value in this particular should be made as widely known as possible. This bulletin is one of a series designed …
