Effects Of Drought, Dust, And Intensity Of Grazing On Cover And Yield Of Short-Grass Pastures, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver Jan 1944

Effects Of Drought, Dust, And Intensity Of Grazing On Cover And Yield Of Short-Grass Pastures, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The vast range lands of western Kansas occupy approximately one half of that area. They are now recovering from the terrible destruction wrought by overgrazing, drought, and dust-burial during the past decade. Since grass is man's most powerful ally in soil and water conservation, since pastures are tremendously important as the cheapest and most satisfactory feed for cattle, and since the recovery of the western range is not only an economic problem of great importance but a phenomenon of outstanding ecological interest, the redevelopment of the plant cover warrants careful investigation.

External Parasites Of Poultry And Methods For Their Control, O. S. Bare Dec 1943

External Parasites Of Poultry And Methods For Their Control, O. S. Bare

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

External parasites cause severe losses to Nebraska poultry producers each year, and in many cases may be the deciding factor between success and failure. Under present circumstances, when maximum production is essential, prompt and effective measures must be taken to hold these saboteurs in check.

The Use Of Dried Whey And Blood Meal In The Raising Of Calves On Limited Amounts Of Milk, I. L. Hathaway, G. W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis Oct 1943

The Use Of Dried Whey And Blood Meal In The Raising Of Calves On Limited Amounts Of Milk, I. L. Hathaway, G. W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The use of substitutes for milk in the raising of calves is always of interest to the progressive dairyman, since there are a number of circumstances in which it is advantageous to reduce the milk feeding period. Producers of market milk often desire to raise their calves on as little milk as possible in order to have more milk available for market. When the demand for milk is good, dairymen who usually market cream only may prefer to sell milk and raise their calves on starters or other milk substitutes. Dairy farmers may wish to use the skim milk generally …

Replacement Of True Prairie By Mixed Prairie In Eastern Nebraska And Kansas, J. E. Weaver Oct 1943

Replacement Of True Prairie By Mixed Prairie In Eastern Nebraska And Kansas, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Destruction of a portion of one plant association and its replacement by another has just been completed. This has occurred not as the result of man's interference with the vegetation nor the effect of his grazing animals. It has been due to a dry climatic cycle and has been accomplished within a period of seven years. The scene of action was the broad area on the western edge of true prairie in central Kansas, eastern Nebraska, and eastern South Dakota. It is distinctly east of the mixed prairie in the central portion of these states. Although the phenomenon was general …

Bindweed Eradication In Nebraska, N. S. Hanson, F. D. Keim, D. L. Gross Aug 1943

Bindweed Eradication In Nebraska, N. S. Hanson, F. D. Keim, D. L. Gross

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Bindweed, which is easily recognized by its creeping, entwining habit of growth, is Nebraska's most destructive weed because of its effect on crop plants. Its total annual cost to the agricultural industry of the state is several million dollars, which ultimately affects all those citizens who depend directly or indirectly upon income from agriculture.

Fishes Of The Middle West, Rachel L. Carson Jul 1943

Fishes Of The Middle West, Rachel L. Carson

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The waters of the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes are a potential source of several hundred million pounds of food in the form of tasty lake and river fishes. This rich resource of the inland waters is important to a nation at war. Because of the growing meat shortage, people will eat more fish than in pre-war years. In the interior of the country, people will eat more fresh-water fish than before, because fish are good and nutritious and because, in the coming months, the shipments of rosefish, halibut, shrimp, and other seafoods that come to them from the …

Conception Rate In Dairy Cattle By Artificial Insemination At Various Stages Of Estrus, George W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis Apr 1943

Conception Rate In Dairy Cattle By Artificial Insemination At Various Stages Of Estrus, George W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A breeding experiment with 295 dairy cows and heifers of the Jersey, Guernsey, Ayrshire, and Holstein breeds was conducted in the University of Nebraska dairy herd. The females were given artificial services at various stages of estrus to determine the effect of time of service upon conception. The results obtained indicate the potential benefits in higher percentage of conception in females bred during the middle of estrus, toward the end of estrus, and those bred in full heat and rebred in 24 hours. The latter is usually not very practical, especially in artificial breeding rings, but there are occasions when …

Orders: … General Orders, Special, Orders, Bulletins, And Circulars, 6th Ed, Robert Bolin , Depositor

United States Army: Training Documents

The members of the Adjutant General’s Department were the administrative officers of the Army. With the assistance of a large numbers of clerks and other assistants, they had monumental task of generating the paperwork necessary to organize thousands of military units, bases, air fields, and other facilities; to move officers and soldiers around to staff those organizations, and to move units from place to place. The Adjutant General’s School had the task of training numerous adjutants.

This text explains the differences between the various types of orders, explains the details of framing each correctly, and urges adjutants to write clearly …

Cockroach Control, H. D. Tate, E. C. Klostermeyer Feb 1943

Cockroach Control, H. D. Tate, E. C. Klostermeyer

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Cockroaches are among the most annoying and objectionable of household pests. They are a menace to sanitation, and their filthy habits result in the destruction and pollution of food. Not only may they become numerous in homes, but also in restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, dairies and other places where food is prepared or stored. Since they are active mostly at night, large numbers may develop in a building before they are known to exist.

Food From The Sea: Fish And Shellfish Of New England, Rachel L. Carson Jan 1943

Food From The Sea: Fish And Shellfish Of New England, Rachel L. Carson

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Millions of Americans are developing new wartime food habits, trying foods they once neglected, turning to alternates for long familiar products. For everyone of the ten fish or shellfish that make up mere than four-fifths of New England's catch there are seven species little known or utilized, many of which could provide tasty and nutritious foods. Turning to these under-utilized species will conserve food resources by lifting the burden of over-exploitation from such fishes as cod and haddock and will augment dwindling supplies of protein foods. Exploring the seafood markets for unfamiliar species rewards the housewife and her family with …

Effect Of Manganese And Iodine Additions In A Specific Ration For Laying Hens, F. E. Mussehl Jan 1943

Effect Of Manganese And Iodine Additions In A Specific Ration For Laying Hens, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

This preliminary experiment does not answer all of the questions that are presented about manganese and iodine requirements. It can only be taken to indicate that for a typical situation with a typical ration of the type that many poultry producers use, there was no satisfactory evidence that egg production, hatchability and the viability of the hens was limited by manganese and iodine in the ration.
