Federal Wildlife Importation Regulations: The Why And Wherefore, Joseph P. Linduska
Federal Wildlife Importation Regulations: The Why And Wherefore, Joseph P. Linduska
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
This is a hasty and in many ways superficial review of the motivations that started us in the business of importing new, strange, beautiful, and hopefully useful wildlife. It is a capsuled account of the high cost of ill-advised introductions and of near misses that were avoided thanks to a few individuals who viewed such transplants with skepticism and even alarm. And I have touched also on the highlights of the legislative base from which we now operate in efforts to safeguard agriculture and other values from ravages of exotic wildlife; wildlife that may succeed too well with us and …

Epizootic Ecology In The Training Program Of The Vector-Borne Disease Section, Harold E. Stark
Epizootic Ecology In The Training Program Of The Vector-Borne Disease Section, Harold E. Stark
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 3rd (1967)
To fulfill the primary objective of the Vector-Borne Disease Section of NCDC to reduce the incidence of vector-borne diseases - a series of courses on vertebrates and arthropods and their role as reservoirs, vectors, and disease-causing agents is presented. Literature is prepared and a museum is maintained. One of these courses, Epizootic Ecology, illustrates some of the aspects dealt with in these courses. Definitions and concepts are presented followed by a brief review of principles of epidemiology and ecology. Specific examples constitute the bulk of the course. One of these, tularemia, is especially useful for the purposes of this course …
Relationships Among Herd Life, Milk Production, And Calving Interval, Paul Miller, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson
Relationships Among Herd Life, Milk Production, And Calving Interval, Paul Miller, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Whether to select for longer life in the herd or shorter calving interval depends on the genetic and phenotypic relationships among herd life, amount of milk in first lactation, and calving interval. Herd life and average calving interval are essentially phenotypically uncorrelated. The phenotypic and genetic correlations of herd life and milk in first lactation ranged from .19 to .25 and from .54 to .77, respectively. The phenotypic correlation of average calving interval and milk in first lactation ranged from .19 to .21. Estimates of the heritability of herd life ranged from .05 to .14. This heritability was reduced by …

Experimentation—An Articulation Of A New Myth, Leonard V. Kaplan
Experimentation—An Articulation Of A New Myth, Leonard V. Kaplan
Nebraska Law Review
With explicit recognition of the need for ethical codes addressing medical experimentation after the specter of Nuremberg, what problem does experimentation present to the individual and the community, and if problems do exist, why do they defy legal control? Before analyzing the ethical interaction of doctor and patient and experimenter and subject, we should first recognize that experimentation as a concept is descriptive of legal and social operations as well. Also, the law does not and cannot yield scientific answers; rather it balances, makes value judgments; the law is, in fact, experimenting when it intercedes encouraging or more often proscribing …

Elephant Teeth From The Atlantic Continental Shelf, Frank C. Whitmore Jr., K. O. Emery, H. B. S. Cooke, Donald J. P. Swift
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Teeth of mastodons and mammoths have been recovered by fishermen from at least 40 sites on the continental shelf as deep as 120 meters. Also present are submerged shorelines, peat deposits, lagoonal shells, and relict sands. Evidently elephants and other large mammals ranged this region during the glacial stage of low sea level of the last 25,000 years.

Multiple Sources of Assistance are Available to Exporters (Dorothy Switzer)
When Nebraska manufacturers seek to protect or expand their stake in the world market, they need both expert advise and experienced assistance in handling the multiple negotiations involved in doing business overseas. Although many exporters are finding it advantageous to employ trade specialists, they also continue to place considerable reliance on their home state financial institutions. both directly and through their connections at the point of export. Nebraska banks are able to expedite foreign financial transactions and to provide other essential services such as letters of introduction to foreign businessmen …

The Etchings Of J. Alden Weir, Norman Geske
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
J ALDEN WEIR 1852-1919
Julian AIden Weir, his daughter tells us, "grew up in the highlands of the Hudson Valley, and the world of nature remained at the center of his art and his life . . .. The road from the valley of the Hudson to the rolling hills of Connecticut, where he finally settled, led him through Paris and London, Brittany, the Low Countries, and Spain; and his professional life centered in the city of New York. But his heart was bound up with the quiet rhythms of the land, with his family and his friends."

Plant Vs. Animal Protein As A Source Of Supplemental Protein For The Gilt, Dwane R. Zimmerman, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman
Plant Vs. Animal Protein As A Source Of Supplemental Protein For The Gilt, Dwane R. Zimmerman, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Protein of animal origin has frequently been suggested to have greater nutritional value for swine reproduction than protein of plant origin. Moustgaard (1952) reported that gilts fed a diet in which the supplemental protein was of animal origin (soured separated milk) reached puberty earlier and had a greater ovulation rate and greater embryo survival and litter size at 26 to 29 days of gestation than gilts fed a diet in which the supplemental animal protein was replaced with protein of plant origin. Most of the advantage of the animal protein diet was eliminated when the all-plant diet was supplemented with …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Oral feeding of stilbestrol or implanting with stilbestrol or Synovex has resulted in increased weight gain and efficiency of gain for cattle fed finishing rations.
Combining oral feeding or stilbestrol with implanting did not give increased performance above that obtained from oral stilbestrol alone in two tests. Implanting cattle fed oral stilbestrol at the start of the feeding program with either stilbestrol or Synovex gave a similar pattern of performance to that obtained from oral stilbestrol alone.
The Insurance Definition Of "Automobile", Curtis M. Elliott
The Insurance Definition Of "Automobile", Curtis M. Elliott
Nebraska Law Review
The word "automobile" has a relatively precise meaning in its generic sense. But when used in insurance contracts, it may have a meaning varying from such an illogical definition as "animal-drawn equipment" to that of a private-passenger automobile as recognized in the modern age. And by specific definition, the term may include many types of vehicles not included in the generic meaning. In some insurance contracts, the term is defined carefully, and here there may be little disagreement in interpretation. In others the term is not defined at all, or the definition is so broad that any attempt to determine …

Effect Of Plane Of Nutrition, Sex And Bodyweight On The Chemical Composition Of Yorkshire Pigs, G. M. Babatunde, W. G. Pond, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. H. Kroening, J. T. Reid
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
An experiment was carried out involving the full- vs. limited-feeding of 9 pairs of gilts and 6 of barrows from a population of closely related Yorkshire pigs from approximately 45 kg. live weight up to each of three predetermined slaughter weight groups (79, 90 and 102 kg.). The objective was to determine the effects of level of feed intake, sex and weight on the chemical composition of the empty body, edible carcass and inedible parts (offal) and the fatty acid composition of the mid-back fat. As the slaughter weight increased, the percentages of empty body, carcass and offal protein and …

Business in Nebraska
Nebraska's Industrial Research and Information Service (James W. Monroe)
The Industrial Revolution has moved into the Era of Research, say many experts, as the industrialists of the world look for new products, new and more efficient ways of producing the goods which they have been producing, and other technical data necessary to make their companies more effective in today's highly competitive market. Technologies uncovered by this research are often the basis for the growth and expansion of existing industries and the establishment of new manufacturing plants and other industrial facilities.
