Confidence In Elections Among U.S. Local Officials: Effects Of Social Trust, Partisanship And Political Ambition, Rebecca Sager, Eric Plutzer, Gary Adler, Jonathan S. Coley, Damon Maryl Jan 2025

Confidence In Elections Among U.S. Local Officials: Effects Of Social Trust, Partisanship And Political Ambition, Rebecca Sager, Eric Plutzer, Gary Adler, Jonathan S. Coley, Damon Maryl

Sociology Faculty Works

The U.S. public’s confidence in elections is intensively studied in the last decade but little is known about election confidence among locally elected officials, whose roles and community status may influence public opinion. Using a nationally representative survey of local election officials, we compare election confidence among local elected officials with that of the general public. Local elected officials are more likely to trust both local and national elections. We theorize factors that affect local officials’ trust in elections, including partisan context, state leadership election denial levels, and political ambition. We show how social trust, partisan identity, and ambition significantly …

Examining Our Practice: Engaging In A Faculty Learning Community To Enhance An Online Graduate Program, Regina Rahimi, Lina Soares, Hui Jin

Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications

This research report details a faculty learning community (FLC) developed by three faculty teaching in a graduate program in a mid-size southern university. The purpose of the research was to engage in the study of best practices for online graduate courses by engaging in collaborative discussions on common texts related to improving the teaching and learning experience. Specifically, the faculty engaged in common readings on “small teaching practices” and reflected on the knowledge gleaned and how it related to current online teaching practices (Darby & Lang, 2019; Lang, 2016). The study further explored how an FLC helped higher education instructors …

Nature, Nurture, And Serial Murder: A Biocriminological Analysis Of Jeffrey Dahmer And Aileen Wuornos, Dori W. Jal Jan 2025

Nature, Nurture, And Serial Murder: A Biocriminological Analysis Of Jeffrey Dahmer And Aileen Wuornos, Dori W. Jal

Honors Thesis

In recent years, there has been an increase in public fascination with serial killers, however current criminological explanations continue to focus on social and psychological factors, lacking commentary on potential biological implications. This thesis addresses a gap in the literature by examining how biological processes, specifically epigenetic, neurobiological, and endocrinological mechanisms, interact with environmental stressors to shape serial homicidal behavior. The goal is to determine whether serial murder can be more effectively understood through a biosocial framework that integrates biological vulnerability with lived experience, rather than relying on singular explanatory models.

Using a qualitative multiple-case study methodology, this research analyzes …

Eve’s goal is simple: to discover a college major that will earn her the most money without completely draining her soul. When her housing plans implode and tuition bills pile up, Eve reluctantly takes on the role of RA—a glorified babysitter for drunken freshmen—in exchange for a roof over her head. Quitting isn’t an option, but surviving this circus of unhinged students and incompetent coworkers might just cost her what’s left of her sanity.

Alongside her eclectic team of fellow RAs, Eve battles to keep students alive while chasing down banned pets, unraveling the mystery of the dorm elevator couch, …

The Bib Record In The Age Of Digital Reproduction, Michael Kirby Jan 2025

The Bib Record In The Age Of Digital Reproduction, Michael Kirby

Publications and Research

Taking both structural and thematic inspiration from Walter Benjamin’s “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” this article posits that the movement from physical card catalogs to ALSs [Automated library systems] and ILSs [Integrated library systems] was not solely the result of technological progress. Rather, this transition had its genesis in a process Marx called primitive accumulation—in this case a form specific to the library profession. In other words, this article seeks to recast the history of digitized catalogs within libraries, seeing them, first and foremost, as harbingers of disenfranchisement and dispossession, specifically of catalogers. The article …

Behavioral Response Of Wild Greater Caribbean Manatees (Trichechus Manatus Manatus) To Playbacks Of Conspecifics In Maya Beach, Belize, Phoebe Sonia Hodson Jan 2025

Behavioral Response Of Wild Greater Caribbean Manatees (Trichechus Manatus Manatus) To Playbacks Of Conspecifics In Maya Beach, Belize, Phoebe Sonia Hodson

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The behavioral response of the wild Greater Caribbean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) to the acoustic vocalizations of their closely related subspecies, the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris), was examined for the first time in Placencia Lagoon, Maya Beach, Belize. The main goal of this study was to determine how vocalizations from conspecifics influence the behavior of the wild Greater Caribbean manatee and how this behavioral change may give insight into the functionality of manatee vocalizations. Three call types (squeak, squeal and high squeak) and chewing sounds were played to varying size aggregations of manatees. Broad behavioral …

Automated Video Colorization Techniques For Enhanced Visual Realism And Computational Efficiency, Zahoor M. Aydam, Nidhal K. El Abbadi Jan 2025

Automated Video Colorization Techniques For Enhanced Visual Realism And Computational Efficiency, Zahoor M. Aydam, Nidhal K. El Abbadi

Mesopotamian Journal of Computer Science

Automatic video colorization remains a challenging computer vision task, particularly when ensuring semantic accuracy and temporal coherence across dynamic, multi-scene content. Existing methods often rely on a single fixed reference image, which fails to adapt to abrupt scene changes or variations in lighting and texture. This study presents a hybrid deep learning framework that dynamically selects multiple reference images per scene using adaptive thresholds derived from the Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) and deep features extracted via a ResNet50 backbone with Generalized Mean Pooling (GeM). The framework integrates three specialized modules pre-processing, reference image processing, and attention-based colorization—operating in the …

Green Regionalism In World Trade Law, Pasha L. Hsieh Jan 2025

Green Regionalism In World Trade Law, Pasha L. Hsieh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Multifaceted geopolitical conflicts have led to disruptions in the trade regime and multilateral negotiations. As a paradigm shift, green regionalism has emerged as a new normative process for regional economic frameworks to integrate and operationalize environmental sustainability. The article offers the first interdisciplinary analysis of green regionalism in world trade law. It argues that green regionalism, which has evolved amid various waves of global regionalism, constructs the normative foundation for 'Trade and Sustainability 2.0'. The article employs the concept of recognition in international relations to unveil the motivations and actions of major states in catalyzing green regionalism. Legal and political …

Ai Characterisations And Their Legal Implications, Jerrold Tsin Howe Soh Jan 2025

Ai Characterisations And Their Legal Implications, Jerrold Tsin Howe Soh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This chapter examines the difficult legal characterisation problems that artificially intelligent systems raise and explores how different characterisations of artificial intelligence (AI) shape practical legal outcomes. Three reasons are offered for the legal difficulty with characterising AI. First, answers to characterisation problems are inherently subjective and perspective-driven, particularly when the subject is an intangible technological system. Second, AI technology is especially difficult to define since the field typically proceeds on inexact anthropomorphic metaphors. Third, AI characterisation problems raise difficult sub-problems, particularly in determining how autonomous an AI system is. The chapter thus argues that a range of plausible AI characterisations …

Study Of Prevalence Of Toxoplasmosis In Some Renal ‎Diseases In Children: Is There An Association?‎, Rowida Mokhtar Abdoullah, Sherine M. Elzeiny, Nora I. Aboulfotouh, Ayman M. Hammad

Mansoura Medical Journal

Background: Toxoplasmosis, a widespread protozoal disease caused by the obligatory intracellular Toxoplasma gondii (TG). Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a disease characterized by progressive damage and loss in kidney functions. End stage renal disease (ESRD) is known as CKD with GFR less than 15ml/min. Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is defined as heavy proteinuria that ultimately ends in hypoalbuminemia, hyperlipidemia and generalized edema. Patients with CKD and ESRD are immune compromised so more liable to increased incidence of infections, especially opportunistic infections. Nephrotic syndrome ,90% of cases, is of unknown etiology but some papers suggest toxoplasmosis as a cause. Aim: To evaluate …

Reconciling Theory And Praxis. Defending Subjective Agency Against Althusser's Structuralism - Daniel Guerrero, Daniel Guerrero Jan 2025

Reconciling Theory And Praxis. Defending Subjective Agency Against Althusser's Structuralism - Daniel Guerrero, Daniel Guerrero

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Louis Althusser labels Marx’s early works as humanist, pseudo-materialist, and self-contained within the ideology of German idealism. Therefore, all attempts to develop a Marxist theory based on these works are futile and ideological. Instead, Althusser proposes a ‘scientific’ reading of Marx developing a structuralist theory based on dialectical materialism. I argue that his interpretations deny individual agency and reduce social relations to mechanistic processes, which directly conflicts with fundamental Marxist ideas like alienation, production, and species-being. By discussing authors within the Marxist Humanist tradition, I argue that a theoretical framework based on Marx’s early works is not only possible, but …

The Scope Of The Prior Art, John R. Thomas Jan 2025

The Scope Of The Prior Art, John R. Thomas

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The courts and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) assess whether an invention may be patented by comparing it to the state of the art, which the patent community terms the “prior art.” Heavily influenced by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. and Learned Hand, and more recently expanded by the America Invents Act, the Patent Act features the broadest definition of prior art in U.S. history. No matter how remote, evanescent, or obscure, any activity or publication that occurs one day before the inventor files a patent application—anywhere in the world—may prove patent-defeating.

The government also holds patent proprietors accountable …

Revisiting Patent Linkage, John R. Thomas Jan 2025

Revisiting Patent Linkage, John R. Thomas

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Alfred Engelberg’s article of a quarter-century ago, Special Patent Provisions for Pharmaceuticals: Have They Outlived Their Usefulness?, raised a provocative question that retains currency today. The special provisions that Hatch-Waxman established, and Engelberg addressed, have come to be known as patent linkage. Following the principle of linkage, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cannot approve generic drugs for marketing if they would infringe a patent.

Hatch-Waxman’s complex patent provisions aspire towards multiple salutary purposes, including encouraging the prompt availability of generic drugs, improving public notice of pharmaceutical patents, and accelerating dispute resolution proceedings. Congress also attempted to ameliorate perceived …

Review: Out Of The Mouths Of Babes: Infant Voices In Medieval French Literature, Alani Hicks-Bartlett Jan 2025

Review: Out Of The Mouths Of Babes: Infant Voices In Medieval French Literature, Alani Hicks-Bartlett

Quidditas

Voicing a stirring call for readers to reconsider the silence and lacunae that are traditionally attributed to infancy, in her latest monograph, Julie Singer situates infancy as both an essential critical framework and an instructive, illuminative methodology through which a gaping archival silence can be rectified-that silence being literary representations of the medieval child, and specifically, the spoken life of the medieval child. As Singer argues, infancy and childhood entwine rather indiscernibly with each other in accordance with the medieval attribution of a longue dureé to infancy (Isidore of Seville, for instance, posited infancy as a stage lasting for about …

Seeing With A Hat: How Joseph Smith Used A Hat In Translating The Book Of Mormon, Stan Spencer Jan 2025

Seeing With A Hat: How Joseph Smith Used A Hat In Translating The Book Of Mormon, Stan Spencer

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Joseph Smith’s use of a seer stone and hat in producing the Book of Mormon has been a point of confusion, dismay, and even embarrassment among some believers. These feelings may reflect a lack of understanding of the functions of these objects in enabling Joseph to receive divine revelation. As the term was used in the Bible and commonly used in Joseph Smith’s day, a seer was a “seer” of visions. Accordingly, a seer stone was a stone used for seeing visions. Joseph was reported to have used seer stones to receive the translation of the Book of Mormon in …

Spiritual Implications Of The Timing Of The Death Of Jesus Christ, C. Thomas Black Jan 2025

Spiritual Implications Of The Timing Of The Death Of Jesus Christ, C. Thomas Black

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Centuries-long speculation continues regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of the Savior. Whether he died sooner than would have been expected, as some scholars believe, or lived longer than expected, statements from the scriptures and modern-day prophets indicate that the Lord died at the exact moment of his choice. According to the Gospels and historical accounts, that moment coincided with the sacrifice of the later of the two daily tamid sacrifices. The tamid had been instituted by Jehovah and symbolized the future atoning sacrifice of the Savior. Each of the other offerings throughout the sacrificial day between the two tamid …

"Being Therefore Perfect" Matthew 5:48 In Modern Restoration And Ancient Jewish Contexts, Trevan G. Hatch, Gerrit Van Dyk

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Matthew 5:48 (“Be ye therefore perfect . . . ”) is a salient passage of scripture for Latter-day Saints because of its seeming focus on becoming like God, a key doctrine of the Latter-day Saints faith. But what insights do we gain from analyzing its ancient Jewish context by comparing it to a parallel verse in Luke 6, by examining the verses immediately preceding it, and by considering the Greek grammar of the passage and the ancient meaning of the word translated as perfect in its various contexts? This essay explores these interpretive angles as well as survey show this …

What Can Artificial Intelligence Tell Us About The Literary Skills Needed To Dictate A Text Like The Book Of Mormon?, Brian C. Hales Jan 2025

What Can Artificial Intelligence Tell Us About The Literary Skills Needed To Dictate A Text Like The Book Of Mormon?, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The first oral draft of the Book of Mormon dictated by Joseph Smith reflected remarkable literary refinement and complexity. Such observations demonstrate that he exhibited highly developed composition and oratory skills. To date, no scholar has attempted to describe the specific skills Joseph manifested while dictating. This essay addresses whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) could generate an accurate list of the skills necessary. It begins by identifying and informally testing eleven chatbots to see if they can accurately predict the skills needed to perform a task. Seeing success, they are next asked a long question about the skills needed to dictate …

Show Me Nagara, Tell Me Shinji:, George Dibble Jan 2025

Show Me Nagara, Tell Me Shinji:, George Dibble

BYU Asian Studies Student Journal

Evangelion is widely regarded by fans and critics as a masterpiece, with its final episodes often described as transformative and perfect (Shinseiki Evangerion, 1995-1996; Erter; Azuma). With its release, Evangelion “entered among the most widely discussed TV series in anime history” (Solomon). However, this profound impact invites a critical examination of its narrative conclusions. In Dr. Mick Broderick’s article “Anime's Apocalypse: Neon Genesis Evangelion as Millennarian Mecha,” he writes that the anime’s protagonist, Ikari Shinji, “learns to break free from his self-absorption, the anomie of selfpity and hatred that has prevented true interaction with family, friends and colleagues.” Yet I …

What Copyright Can't Do, Blake Reid Jan 2025

What Copyright Can't Do, Blake Reid

Publications

Copyright has become a powerful regulatory regime for modern American life. Copyrighted works, including text, images, video, sounds, music, and software, coupled with routine, frictionless copying, form a large part of the information, cultural and social context, and infrastructure of our increasingly digital society. Copyright law's powerful remedies are now positioned to intervene in a wide range of everyday activities. As a result, scholars, policymakers, and advocates have increasingly called for modifying and applying U.S. copyright law to solve a wide range of public policy problems, from vindicating disability rights to protecting privacy to promoting competition among wireless carriers.

But …
