Thermal Regulation Of The Human Body, Thomas C. Campbell, Norman J. Chonacky
Thermal Regulation Of The Human Body, Thomas C. Campbell, Norman J. Chonacky
Physical Science Modules for Bioscience Students
The supervision of the complicated task of managing your body's energy resources is laid to many ingenious systems, both chemical and physical, in your body. One group of such control systems keeps the temperature of the body relatively stable despite a wide range of variety and intensity of the energy conversion and utilization processes which occur there.
For example, increase in thermal stimulation of body temperature sensors may result in secretion of water by the sweat glands which in turn cools the skin surface and increases the heat outflow. In another scenario, thermal stimulation can initiate stricturing of certain blood …

Tetrahymena corlissi, a free-living protozoan, apparently caused the death of large numbers of guppies (Poecilia reticulatus) and occasionally other fishes, in aquaria and hatcheries at several locations. Apparently the disease occurs when the fish and protozoan populations are both at a high level of density. The signs include white spots and epidermal damage. Histologically, T. corlissi could be seen in skin, muscle, and viscera; in some there was marked inflammation, in others there was little tissue reaction. A key is presented for the identification of invasive fish ciliates: Chilodonella, Hemiophrys, Ichthyophthirius, Ophryoglena, and Tetrahymena.

Isolation And Identification Of Mycoplasma Agalactiae Subsp. Bovis From Arthritic Cattle In Iowa And Nebraska, O. H. V. Stalheim, S. S. Stone
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Two strains of Mycoplasma were isolated from synovial fluids of arthritic feeder cattle and were identified as Mycoplasma agalactiae subsp. bovis by growth inhibition and fluorescent antibody tests. The strains (Iowa 1136 and Nebraska 2) could not be distinguished from known strains (Donetta and California 01) by immunoelectrophoresis or by agar gel precipitation.
The Institutional-Legal Face Of The Environmental Coin, Marshall Harris
The Institutional-Legal Face Of The Environmental Coin, Marshall Harris
Nebraska Law Review
The central thesis of this article is that present concern about the environment should involve institutional-legal aspects (the socio-eco-political side) as well as biological and physical features (the bio-physical side) of our environmental coin. A corollary thesis is that maladjusted socio-eco-political relations are among the chief causes of the present and prospective deterioration of our environment's bio-physical attributes. The focus of this short article is on a particular and familiar sector—the agricultural complex. Major emphasis is placed on the farm aspect with frequent reference to agribusiness.

Socialization Of Children, Linda Davis
Socialization Of Children, Linda Davis
Nebraska Anthropologist
The children of a culture represent its greatest asset and responsibility. They insure the survival of a culture if its members can accomplish the formidable task of socialization. Americans are acutely aware of this responsibility. This concern is reflected in the tremendous amount of literature about children. For this reason, I used a familiar type of American literature, the comic strip, for an analysis of socialization in the United States. I chose to study "Dennis the Menace" and "Peanuts" because they deal specifically with children from a white, middle class neighborhood.
Socialization, as defined by Hartley and Hartley (In HSU …

I. Gunter and Christmas (1973) described the events leading to the stranding of a baleen whale on Ship Island, Mississippi, in 1968, giving the species as Balaenopteru physalus, the Rorqual. Unfortunately the identification was in error, but fortunately good photographs were shown. The underside of the tail was a splotched white, but there was no black margin. The specimen also had fewer throat and belly grooves than the Rorqual, as a comparison with True’s (1904) photograph shows. Dr. James Mead (in litt.) pointed out that the animal was a Sei Whale, Balaenoptera borealis. This remains a …

An Estuarine Low Temperature Fish Kill In Mississippi, With Remarks On Restricted Necropsies, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
In January 1973, large numbers of Mugil cephalus (striped mullet), weighing approximately 250 gm each, died in two freshwater localities in tidewater bayous of Jackson County, Mississippi. Fish identified as Mugil curema, M. cephalus, Megalops atlantica, Dormitator maculatus, and Fundulus grandis were found dead in other low saline estuarine areas. Fish-kills during cold periods are less commonly encountered in Mississippi than in Texas or Florida. This particular incident is attributed to conditions of stress for fishes incompletely acclimated to the encountered low temperatures. The most deleterious stress was the low saline water which probably allowed a breakdown in the …

Differentiation Of Microsporidian Spore-Tails In Inodosporus Spraguei Gen. Et Sp. N., Robin M. Overstreet, Earl Weidner
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The new genus Inodosporus was erected to accept I. spraguei, a new species having eight sporoblasts per pansporoblast with each subsequent spore possessing three or four basal spore-tails and one branched apical one. It is primarily by the apical tail that the species is separated from the only other recognized species, I. octospora (Henneguy, 1892) comb. n., formerly Thelohania octospora.
Spore-tails of I. spraguei are membranous channels which originate within differentiating pansporoblasts during genesis of sporonts into sporoblasts. During the switch from vegetative to spore-forming development, cytoplasmic constituents of I. spraguei segregate into two distinctive domains for which …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The beef cattle industry is experiencing a significant increase in demand for feeder cattle. Current difficulties in obtaining sufficient numbers of feeder cattle on a continuing basis have put pressures on the feeder cattle marketing system that did not exist in the past. Feedlot operators, growers (backgrounders), and cow-herd operators are looking for ways and means of improving the system. Innovations are being tested. Those circumstances prompted personnel of the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Kansas and Nebraska to undertake a joint study of cattle marketing under a Regional Research Project.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Three species of anoplocephaline cestodes, Anoplocephalinae gen. et sp. indet., Schizorchis cf. altaica Gvozdev, 1951, and Ectopocephalium abei gen. et sp. n., are reported from pikas, Ochotona roylei (Ogilby) and O. macrotis (Giinther), from central Nepal. The taxonomic status of Schizorchis esarsi Lovekar et al., 1972, and of Schizorchodes dipodomi Bienek and Grundmann, 1972, is discussed, with the conclusion that both species belong in the subfamily Linstowiinae, near the genus Atriotaenia Sandground, 1926. Ectopocephalium gen. n. is distinguished from other genera in the subfamily Anoplocephalinae by the modified anterior portion of the strobila, which is embedded in the tissue of …

Bats Of Margarita Island, Venezuela, With Zoogeographic Comments, James Dale Smith, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Sixteen species of bats are reported from Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta, Venezuela. These include two species of emballonurids, one noctilionid, two mormoopids, nine phyllostomatids, one vespertilionid, and one molossid. Accounts including natural history and taxonomic comments are given for each species. The chiropteran fauna of Margarita Island is compared with the bat faunas of the adjacent Venezuelan mainland and islands off the northern coast of South America, including Trinidad and other Antillean islands. It is concluded that the chiropteran fauna of Margarita Island represents an attenuated mainland fauna.

Herpetomonas Megaseliae: Architectural Rearrangements During Amastigote Formation, John J. Janovy Jr., P. M. Daggett, K. W. Lee
John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications
The ultrastructure of Herpetomonas megaseliae Daggett, Dollahon, and Janovy, 1972, culture forms has been described in detail by Janovy et aI. (1974, J. Prot. 21: 53-59). Pellicular microtubules were described in pro- and opisthomastigotes as parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body and to the axis of the flagellar pocket. Microtubules lay in an electron translucent zone directly beneath the limiting membrane, and the flagellar pocket opened at the anterior end.
Unpublished studies in this laboratory have indicated that Herpetomonas megaseliae and a number of other "lower" trypanosomatid parasites are capable of transforming into amastigotelike forms upon phagocytosis by …
