Pond Water Quality In A Claypan Soil, Elbert C. Dickey, J. K. Mitchell Jan 1975

Pond Water Quality In A Claypan Soil, Elbert C. Dickey, J. K. Mitchell

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

In many areas of the Midwestern United States, a safe and plentiful supply of groundwater is a primary concern. Groundwater is sporadic, unreliable, shallow, and often polluted, even though these same areas often have an annual rainfall in excess of 1 m.

The pollution problems associated with these groundwater supplies are both chemical and bacterial. Older wells are often the most dangerous. Linings made of open brick near the surface, cracked casings and covers, and nearby privy, septic tank, and barnyard sites accentuate the problems in shallow groundwater aquifers. High levels of nitrates frequently present in the shallow domestic well …

Oestrus, Lh, Ovulation And Fertility In Beef Heifers, R. K. Christenson, S. E. Echternkamp, D. B. Laster Jan 1975

Oestrus, Lh, Ovulation And Fertility In Beef Heifers, R. K. Christenson, S. E. Echternkamp, D. B. Laster

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The pregnancy rate resulting from matings at a single oestrus in beef cattle averages 70% for natural mating (Turman, Laster, Renbarger & Stephens, 1971) and 60% for artificial insemination (Laster, Glimp & Gregory, 1972). The sources and causes of low pregnancy rates have not been defined, but might include variation in time of ovulation relative to deposition of spermatozoa in the female reproductive tract, fertilization failure, ovum transport, abnormal ova and blastocyst development, and implantation failure. The interval from onset of oestrus to ovulation in dairy cattle has been reported to average 29±6hr with a range from 16 to 42 …

Paleo-Indian Lifeways In The American Southwest; 12,000 To 10,000 Bp, Robert E. Warren Jan 1975

Paleo-Indian Lifeways In The American Southwest; 12,000 To 10,000 Bp, Robert E. Warren

Nebraska Anthropologist

This paper deals with the lifeways of prehistoric populations inhabiting the North American Southwest from 12,000 to 10,000 years ago. Included is a brief delimitation and description of the Southwest area, a review of several current concepts regarding the environmental conditions in existence during the temporal span under concern, a series of brief descriptions of sites and site materials involved, and a concluding section wherein interpretation and inferences are drawn from both internal and external data. Three distinct complexes are recognized which appear to represent sequential cultural adaptations to shifting environmental conditions.

Agriculture And Energy: A Legal Perspective, Doug C. Nelson Jan 1975

Agriculture And Energy: A Legal Perspective, Doug C. Nelson

Nebraska Law Review

During the latter part of 1973 and the early part of 1974 the United States experienced wide publicity given to a concept called the "energy crisis." The energy crisis caused and will continue to cause serious concern in agriculture, particularly with respect to petroleum and natural gas. Agricultural production is a sequence of interdependent energy-using activities, commencing with fertilizer manufacturing and continuing through delivery of food and fiber to consumers from processing plants. The interruption of energy flow during any time or segment of this agricultural system will restrain efficient production. Thus, the availability of petroleum and gas can affect …

Thermometry And Heat Transport In The Human Body, Thomas C. Campbell, Norman J. Chonacky Jan 1975

Thermometry And Heat Transport In The Human Body, Thomas C. Campbell, Norman J. Chonacky

Physical Science Modules for Bioscience Students

We've all grown up with sensations of hot and cold. You receive such specific sensations from touching objects, but also a generalized sensation from your environment. Thus, you may say: "This is hot; that is cold." But also, you say: "I am hot (cold, clammy, chilly, etc.)." These sensations are judgements about thermal conditions from the psychological point of view.

From the physical point of view, heat is transported energy; the body is an engine which transforms chemical energy to mechanical energy, and in doing so produces a residual amount of thermal energy from which the body must continually divest …

Raising Wood Ducks, Richard L. Nelson Jan 1975

Raising Wood Ducks, Richard L. Nelson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Numbered among Nature's most colorful creatures, wood ducks willingly accept a helping hand from man in establishing new homes. These birds adapt well to suitable habitat, and you can play an important part in bringing the wood duck to locations where they do not now nest. For groups or individuals who are willing to expend the effort necessary to undertake a wood duck restoration project anti see it to completion, it is an exceptional gift from today's generation to those of decades and centuries to come. Many areas in Nebraska provide suitable wood duck habitat, but do not have a …

Federal And State Regulations Pertaining To Systematic Collections. I. A Case Of Inadvertent Violation Of Federal Regulations, Jerry R. Choate, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

On 25 April 1975, at the twenty-second annual meeting of the Southwestern Association of Naturalists (SWAN), at the University of Oklahoma Biological Station, President Keith A. Arnold appointed Jerry Choate to investigate current regulations pertaining to collection and transport of scientific specimens in the region of representation (including Mexico) or SWAN. This charge involves both Federal and State laws, several of which are undergoing change and many of which doubtlessly are not familiar to the membership of SWAN. In order that SWAN members might be made aware of these regulations and not unwittingly commit violations, it was decided that SWANEWS …

Ralph Mueller Planetarium Presents Ufo Program, Jack A. Dunn, Harvey L. Gunderson Jan 1975

Ralph Mueller Planetarium Presents Ufo Program, Jack A. Dunn, Harvey L. Gunderson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

In 1974 the Ralph Mueller planetarium presented a program on the subject of UFOs. This program was difficult to produce because of the extremely subjective nature of the topic. It would have been easy to slant such a program in one of two ways. The program might label all persons seeing UFOs as "wild-eyed kooks"; or it could swing to the other extreme, where all testimony and "evidence" are accepted without attempting to subject it to scientific scrutiny. This information, then, is presented in the hope that the reader will realize that the subject can and is being studied in …

The Crux Of Merging Deltas: A Note On Alan Sillitoe, Robert S. Haller Jan 1975

The Crux Of Merging Deltas: A Note On Alan Sillitoe, Robert S. Haller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

First paragraph:

The English Writer Alan Sillitoe is, to most Americans, a man of two books (or movies): Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (with Albert Finney); and The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (with Tom Courtenay). Indeed, most Americans do not know that he has produced a book a year since 1959 (when The Long Distance-Runner came out), including eight other novels, three books of poems, two collections of short stories, one book of travel, one play, and one children's book. They know little about his life or the progress of his career, about his international connections or his present …

Isolation And Identification Of Mycoplasma Agalactiae Subsp. Bovis From Arthritic Cattle In Iowa And Nebraska, O. H. V. Stalheim, S. S. Stone

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Two strains of Mycoplasma were isolated from synovial fluids of arthritic feeder cattle and were identified as Mycoplasma agalactiae subsp. bovis by growth inhibition and fluorescent antibody tests. The strains (Iowa 1136 and Nebraska 2) could not be distinguished from known strains (Donetta and California 01) by immunoelectrophoresis or by agar gel precipitation.

Intraproblem Retention During Learning-Set Acquisition In Bluejays (Cyanocitta Eristata), Alan C. Kamil, John E. Maulden Jan 1975

Intraproblem Retention During Learning-Set Acquisition In Bluejays (Cyanocitta Eristata), Alan C. Kamil, John E. Maulden

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Recent experiments have shown that bluejays and rhesus monkeys experienced in object-discrimination learning set (ODLS) exhibit a rapid decline in performance when a retention interval is inserted between successive trials of individual ODLS problems (Bessemer & Stollnitz, 1971; Kamil, Lougee, & Shulman, 1973). This intraproblem retention loss (IRL), or forgetting, has been interpreted as reflecting the importance of relatively transient memory traces for events of previous trials of the ODLS problem as determinants of choice behavior on the current trial of the same problem. According to this model, these memory traces function as discriminative stimuli in a conditional discrimination which …

Marginal Learning-Set Formation By The Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos), Maxwell W. Hunter Iii, Alan C. Kamil Jan 1975

Marginal Learning-Set Formation By The Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos), Maxwell W. Hunter Iii, Alan C. Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Each of three hand raised crows received 300 learning set problems in a modified WGTA using three-dimensional stimuli. Consistent within-problem learning was obtained but learning set formation was minimal. An analysis of hypothesis behavior (Levine, 1959) revealed a strong tendency towards position and stimulus preferences. These results raise the possibility of large species differences in learning set formation within the family Corvid

Taxonomy And Zoogeography Of Lemmus Spp. (Rodentia: Arvicolinae), With Notes On Laboratory-Reared Lemmings, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia R. Rausch Jan 1975

Taxonomy And Zoogeography Of Lemmus Spp. (Rodentia: Arvicolinae), With Notes On Laboratory-Reared Lemmings, Robert L. Rausch, Virginia R. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Lemmings of the genus Lemmus Link, 1795, have long attracted interest because of the high numerical densities attained at intervals by their populations. In earlier times, in northern Europe, such events seemed so remarkable as to be explained by some as a consequence of the animals' having fallen from the sky (HaGSTROM 1749). During the last 25 years, lemmings have been the object of intensive ecological investigation in Eurasia and North America, although there has been no consensus concerning their taxonomic relationships. In 1959, a colony of brown lemmings from arctic Alaska was established in our laboratory, primarily to provide …

Rabies In Experimentally Infected Bears, Ursus Spp., With Epizootiologic Notes, Robert L. Rausch Jan 1975

Rabies In Experimentally Infected Bears, Ursus Spp., With Epizootiologic Notes, Robert L. Rausch

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Ten black bears, Ursus americanus Pallas, and three brown bears, U. arctos Linnaeus, were inoculated with rabies virus from naturally infected foxes in Alaska. The bears were more resistant than canine species, requiring at least 1,000 MLD50 of virus for infection. Low titres or negative results were obtained in salivary glands titrated in mice. Clinical course of the disease, post mortem findings, and microscopic lesions are described. Microscopic lesions were more· severe in brown bears, in which the inflammatory response was distinguished by the presence of numerous eosinophils in the perivascular infiltrate and among cells diffusely infiltrating the parenchyma. …

Prevalence And Potential Vectors Of Haemoproteus In Nebraska Mourning Doves, Ellis C. Greiner Jan 1975

Prevalence And Potential Vectors Of Haemoproteus In Nebraska Mourning Doves, Ellis C. Greiner

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Three hundred and nine mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) from Lancaster County, Nebraska, were examined for species of Haemoproteus. Older doves possessed higher Haemoproteus prevalences than younger doves. Mean total prevalence for each dove age group was as follows: adults, 61% H. sacharovi and 83% H. maccallumi; immatures, 35% H. sacharovi and 42% H. maccallumi; and nestlings, 31 % H. sachairovi and 16% H. maccallumi. Yearly prevalences were less variable in mature doves than in immature and nestling doves. No correlation between nestling and parent Haemoproteus infections were observed, but nestmates in 10 or 18 …

Karyotype Of Geomys Pinetis (Mammalia: Geomyidae), With A Discussion Of The Chromosomal Relationships Within The Genus, S. L. Williams, Hugh H. Genoways Jan 1975

Karyotype Of Geomys Pinetis (Mammalia: Geomyidae), With A Discussion Of The Chromosomal Relationships Within The Genus, S. L. Williams, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Summary. Four of the five subspecies of Geomys pinetis were karyotyped. All specimens examined had a diploid number of 42 and a fundamental number of 80. This karyotype was compared with the described karyotypes of other species of Geomys and was considered to be derived from an ancestoral form having a karyotype of about 70 acrocentric elements.

Digenetic Trematodes In Cephalopods, Robin M. Overstreet, F. G. Hochsberg Jan 1975

Digenetic Trematodes In Cephalopods, Robin M. Overstreet, F. G. Hochsberg

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

In addition to listing digenetic trematodes found in cephalopods, we provide descriptions of adults of Derogenes varicus and larvae of Lecithochirium microstomum, Lecithochirium sp., Elytrophallus sp., Monilicaecum sp., and Stephanochasmus sp. Only the first had been described previously from cephalopods, and the last represents the first record of a nonpiscine second intermediate host for a species of Stephanochasmus. We found 15 species infected, which brings to nearly 30 the total number of squids, octopods, and cuttlefish reported to be infected with Digenea. Many early records of trematodes in cephalopods are actually reports of Monogenea, Cestoda, or reproductive organs …

Fundamental Energy Processes Of The Human Body, Thomas C. Campbell, Norman J. Chonacky Jan 1975

Fundamental Energy Processes Of The Human Body, Thomas C. Campbell, Norman J. Chonacky

Physical Science Modules for Bioscience Students

Within the hand that holds this sheet of paper there throb thousands of engines; each with its own fuel requirements; each yielding varying amounts of work, heat, and waste output. Each is a cell in your body.

Of course, these cells are not completely independent. They share in a society, but especially in an economy, of the whole organism. This economy does not trade dollars of differing currencies; rather, its commerce is in energy of differing forms.

A particularly important asset is thermal energy. It is the natural by-product of the various energy conversion processes, the biochemical reactions within the …
